As fires ravaged California's world-famous wine country in 2017, a community radio station, emergency dispatcher, and tenant organizers helped the most vulnerable in their community survive and recover. Community organizers and hosts of the podcast But Next Time Chrishelle Palay and Rose Arrieta bring us the first of four stories of hard-won lessons learned from people on the frontlines of California's wildfires and Texas' storms as they work to answer the question, how can next time be different? In this first episode we discuss hardship faced by farm and service workers during this time, especially non-English speakers. These workers are the heart of wine country, from the planters to the harvesters, to the line cooks, hotel staff and dishwashers. Our systems failed them, how do we do better next time? Last Call: Special Series Dedicated to the Covid-19 Crisis Jaeki says: “Yo, we caught up with Cliff Cho, owner of famed New York City bar Fat Buddha and the newly opened omakase sushi restaurant OMOMO. Cliff, who’s a veteran events promoter and DJ, opened up Fat Buddha in the East Village nearly a decade ago. The establishment has since become a nightlife staple for New Yorkers seeking classic hip-hop. It’s also a hub for the Asian-American artist community with notable regulars including Dumbfoundead, Awkwafina, and of course, me. Unfortunately, like all restaurants facing the ongoing COVID-19 crisis, Cliff’s businesses—Fat Buddha and OMOMO—have both halted operations. Jaeki says... Julie Young is an older sister figure to many. A Korean adoptee raised in an Italian-Irish household, married to an African-American husband and a mother of mixed-race children, her multicultural upbringing clearly had an influence on her worldly views, especially her mission and drive to provide opportunities for POCs in art, music, and film. A corporate attorney with a passion for storytelling, I first met Julie through her interview series Not Your Average hosted on the non-profit platform Korean American Story. Her passion for fairer representation in media led to the creation of TIDE, a Brooklyn-based film festival celebrating filmmakers of color. Ahh the great Price Per Pound debate rolls on...
All pop this week, boys. Pop culture and pop music. Wall to wall. We're discussing World War Z; Cory Monteith's death; Adam Lambert joining Glee; Lady Gaga announces dates for ArtPop; Lyndsay Lohan gets an interview and reality show deal; Leah Remini escapes Scientology; Sharknado and Ian Ziering; Mench'd will help you find love; and Swish listener Bryan James has a new book out titled, Per Pound of Flesh. We've also got a portion of DJ Drew G's newest electrifying mashup: Dirty Pop 32. How do Games of Thrones and Rihanna fit together? Quite nicely...and only Drew could have pulled it off. Then, we tell you more about Margaret Cho's defense of outing John Travolta; why Fergie is legally changing her name; who Andrew Garfield thinks is hot; and, whether or not Two and a Half Men needs to change their name. Oh, and we rip Britney Spears a new one. This week on the high class Swish Edition gay comedy podcast!
