Send us a textCarlos Castro is an award-winning music mixing and recording engineer/producer based in Los Angeles, California, with a remarkable 30-year career in the music industry. His expertise has earned him 13 Latin Grammy nominations, two BASF awards, and numerous platinum and gold records, cementing his reputation as a leading force in sound engineering. With a passion for high-fidelity sound recording, Carlos is the owner and operator of Watersound Studios in Studio City, California, where he continues to create groundbreaking music projects.Carlos's journey in music began at a young age. Born in Mexico City into a family of writers and opera singers, he became fascinated with sound recording at the age of nine, when a portable cassette recorder ignited his curiosity. That curiosity led to a brief but memorable incident in which he recorded the sound of a microwave oven, sparking a lifelong love for music and audio. As a teenager, Carlos worked as a DJ in Mexico, later becoming a finalist in a national DJ competition. His passion for sound grew as he studied piano and began exploring music production.Carlos's professional career took flight after he worked at B&K Studios in Mexico City, where he honed his engineering skills. Inspired by albums like Michael Jackson's Thriller and George Benson's Give Me the Night, both of which were engineered by the legendary Bruce Swedien, Carlos sought out opportunities to work with the best in the business. At the age of 19, he attended Full Sail Center for the Recording Arts in Florida, and soon after, he impressed Swedien with his innovative spirit and was invited to work at West Viking Recorders in California.During his three years with Swedien, Carlos contributed to major projects such as the Free Willy soundtrack and Michael Jackson's Super Bowl halftime show. After the Northridge earthquake, he continued to develop his career by working at several major Los Angeles studios before moving on to engineer for iconic Latin music artists like Luis Miguel, Shaila Dúrcal, and Alicia Villarreal. His first major project, Amarte Es Un Placer by Luis Miguel, was a turning point in his career.Carlos's journey culminated in the creation of Watersound Studios, which took three years to build from the ground up. The studio reflects Carlos's engineering soul, with state-of-the-art equipment and a commitment to producing exceptional sound. His career has seen him collaborate with some of the biggest names in music, including Shawn Colvin, Selena Gómez, Demi Lovato, Luis Miguel, Molotov, and many more. His work has been featured in numerous film and television projects, including Desperate Housewives, Hellcats, and the films High Chicago, Perfect Wave, and Alleged.Fluent in both English and Spanish, Carlos has worked on projects across cultures and continents, bringing his versatile expertise to both analog tape and digital workstation recording. Whether collaborating with major artists or working on a film score, Carlos continues to push the boundaries of sound, leaving his mark on the global music industry.___________________Music CreditsIntroEuphoria in the San Gabriel Valley, Yone OGStingerScarlet Fire (Sting), Otis McDonald, YouTube Audio LibraryOutroEuphoria in the San Gabriel Valley, Yone OG__________________My SGV Podcast:Website: www.mysgv.netNewsletter: Beyond the MicPatreon: MySGV Podcastinfo@sgvmasterkey.com

Imagine planning the surf trip of a lifetime—saving up for flights, booking the perfect spot, and counting down the days until your toes hit the sand. But when you finally get there? Flat water. No waves. Just an expensive beach vacation without the one thing you came for. Mike Schwaab and Dave Taylor (DT) know that heartbreak all too well. As lifelong friends and passionate surfers, they've chased waves all over the world—only to be let down by Mother Nature more than once. That disappointment sparked an idea: what if there was a place where surfers could always count on perfect waves? No unpredictability, no wasted trips, just endless stoke. That idea became Waco Surf—one of the most innovative inland surf destinations in the world, right here in the heart of Texas. In this episode, we dive into:

The Surfer’s Journal presents Soundings with Jamie Brisick

Matt Warshaw grew up surfing in Los Angeles at a time when surf and skate culture were beginning to meet in Venice Beach and Santa Monica. After a stint as a pro surfer in the 1980s, Warshaw became the editor of Surfer magazine. In 1990, he left his editor's post at Surfer to attend UC Berkeley, where he got his BA in History in 1993. He remained in the Bay Area, parking himself in an apartment in the Sunset District and in countless Ocean Beach barrels. As if personally expanded by all those tubes, Warshaw's writing expanded into lengthy essays, profiles, and books—many books—among them Maverick's: The Story of Big-Wave Surfing, Above The Roar: 50 Surfer Interviews, Photo/Stoner, Surfriders: In Search of the Perfect Wave, Surf Movie Tonite! Surf Movie Poster Art, 1957-2005, and more. His Encyclopedia of Surfing, first released in 2003, is the most comprehensive tome of surf culture in existence, and he followed it up with 2010's The History of Surfing, a beast of a book that makes music of Warshaw's encyclopedic knowledge. His most recent venture is the EOS dot surf, which is an invaluable online resource for surf obsessives, and features the “Sunday Joint,” a reflective op-ed style email that Matt shoots out to subscribers every Sunday. In this episode of Soundings, Warshaw talks with Jamie Brisick about the golden days of Los Angeles, establishing a career as a historian, the value of exploring someone else's world, the importance of preserving history, the challenge of creating a database, his first Jeff Ho board, the Encyclopedia of Surfing, and the art of writing economically.

In this episode, Derik Hyatt chats with Great Lakes surfer and filmmaker, Vince Deur from his home in Grand Haven, Michigan as he reflects on his experience directing the 2005 56-minute film, “Unsalted: A Great Lakes Experience,” which follows Vince on a road trip around the 5 Great Lakes to meet and surf with other landlocked surfers. The film begins with videotape footage Vince recorded in November 1990, when he nearly drowned while surfing Lake Superior near Whitefish Point.  Vince had been caught in a rip current for about an hour, trying futilely to swim to shore, before being suddenly released by the current. Back on dry land, he pledged on camera that he would one day make a film about surfing the Great Lakes.  Unsalted combines home movies of lake surfing going as far back as the 1960’s with contemporary footage culled from 150 hours of filming. The documentary ends on January 22, 2005, when Vince and several pro-surfers from the Ocean Pacific surf team reached the tip of Lake Superior, 24 kilometers northeast of Duluth, Minnesota, in Stony Point, to encounter the "biggest, cleanest ... most ocean like wave" Vince had ever seen on a lake.  The film would go on to screen at film festivals on four continents, with Vince becoming a contact person for surfers around the world who wanted to experience surfing the Great Lakes. You can connect with Vince on Twitter @vincedeur and watch his videos on Vimeo and his YouTube channel.  Unsalted: A Great Lakes Experience is available for purchase on Amazon. Kelly Slater’s Perfect Wave Brings Surfing to a Crossroads

The New Yorker Radio Hour

Play Episode Listen Later Dec 27, 2019 23:42

In December of 2015, a video appeared on the Internet that stunned surfers worldwide. Titled “Kelly’s Wave,” it showed Kelly Slater—arguably the best pro surfer in history—unveiling a secret project he had been working on for more than a decade. With the help of engineers and designers, Slater had perfected the first artificial wave, created by machine in a pool, that could rival the best waves found in the ocean. “One could spend years and years surfing in the ocean,” the staff writer William Finnegan, himself a lifelong surfer, notes, “and never get a wave as good as what some people are getting here today. Ever.”    Finnegan went to visit the Kelly Slater Wave Company’s Surf Ranch—a facility in California’s Central Valley, far from the Coast—to observe a competition and test the wave for himself. (He wrote about the experience in The New Yorker.) Up until now, surfing was defined by its lack of predictability: chasing waves around the world and dealing with disappointment when they do not appear has been integral to the life of a surfer. But, with a mechanically produced, infinitely repeatable, world-class wave, surfing can become like any other sport. The professional World Surf League, which has bought a controlling interest in Slater’s company, sees a bright future.   But Finnegan wonders what it means to take surfing out of nature. Will kids master riding artificial waves without even learning to swim in the ocean? Finnegan spoke with Kelly Slater, Stephanie Gilmore (the Australian seven-time world champion), and Matt Warshaw (the closest thing surfing has to an official historian). Warshaw, like Finnegan, is skeptical about the advent of mechanical waves. Yet he admits that, when he had the chance to ride it, he didn’t ever want to stop. “It reminded me of 1986,” Warshaw recalls. “The drugs have run out, you already hate yourself—how do we get more?”   This story originally aired December 14, 2018.

Full episode info and Show Notes - www.wearelookingsideways.com I’ve been wanting to bag this one for years. Craig Peterson and Kevin Naughton are surfing’s very own Lewis and Clark, two Orange County boys who in the early 1970s embarked upon surfing’s most legendary odyssey, traversing the world looking for waves and defining the golden age of surf travel and exploration. It was an impossibly romantic journey that saw them spend a decade questing their way across the Americas, Europe and Africa, documenting the entire thing in a series of massively influential dispatches for Surfer Magazine, and creating the wave hunt template that everyone from Kepo Acero to Chris Burkard follows today. I first interviewed Craig over 15 years ago, and once my California road trip was confirmed I got back in touch with Craig and arranged to meet them and record an episode while I was staying in Huntington Beach. Which is what myself and Owen Tozer did, heading to Kevin’s SoCal residence to sit down and go over the entire thing. And what a joy the resulting conversation was, enlivened by some of surfing’s greatest tales and the generosity of Craig and Kevin themselves. Sure, they might not enjoy the same renown of some of their peers and contemporaries, but their contribution to surf culture is as great as anybody’s, and it is a true pleasure to help the duo bring their story to a new generation. I've got to thank Craig and Kevin for their hospitality and for being so enthusiastic about coming on the show. Hope you enjoy this glimpse into a classic period of surf history as much as I did. Thanks as usual to Matt Ward for the theme tune, and to my new editor Fina Charleson.

Kelly Slater’s Perfect Wave Brings Surfing to a Crossroads

In December of 2015, a video appeared on the Internet that stunned surfers worldwide. Titled “Kelly’s Wave,” it showed Kelly Slater—arguably the best pro surfer in history—unveiling a secret project he had been working on for more than a decade. With the help of engineers and designers, Slater had perfected the first artificial wave, created by machine in a pool, that could rival the best waves found in the ocean. “One could spend years and years surfing in the ocean,” notes staff writer William Finnegan, himself a lifelong surfer, “and never get a wave as good as what some people are getting here today. Ever.”   Finnegan went to visit the Kelly Slater Wave Company’s Surf Ranch—a facility in California’s Central Valley, far from the coast—to observe a competition and test the wave for himself. Up until now, surfing was defined by its lack of predictability: chasing waves around the world and dealing with disappointment when they do not appear has been integral to the life of a surfer. But with a mechanically produced, infinitely repeatable, world-class wave, surfing can become like any other sport. “The drugs have run out, you already hate yourself—how do we get more?” William Finnegan’s article “Kelly Slater’s Shock Wave” appeared this month in The New Yorker.
