In this episode of The Fitness League, Josh Scutnik and Joelle Cavagnaro dive into practical training questions that come up all the time—but rarely get clear answers. We break down kettlebell training fundamentals, how to improve your pull-ups the right way, and why progressive overload still matters no matter where you're starting from. We also talk through how to adapt workouts to individual needs without losing effectiveness, including common mistakes people make when substituting exercises or relying too heavily on banded reps. Along the way, we share some behind-the-scenes insight into how The Fitness League app is evolving, how community feedback shapes programming decisions, and why tracking habits—not just workouts—can be a game changer for consistency. This episode is all about training with intention: understanding why you're doing what you're doing, focusing on proper form, and building strength in a way that actually carries over to real life. Whether you're working toward your first pull-up, learning kettlebells, or just trying to train smarter—not harder—this one's for you. Mike Schrand has spent more than 30 years at St. Louis Public Radio — and his story is a masterclass in curiosity, creativity, and community. In this episode of Mostly Superheroes, Mike joins Logan Janis for a wide-ranging conversation that moves from overnight jazz shifts and Morning Edition to songwriting, cult movies, and why St. Louis is “the world's largest small town.” We talk about the evolution of public radio, nonprofit journalism, and why live, local storytelling still matters in an on-demand world. Mike also opens up about his life as a musician — including his solo albums Late Bloomer and Things Have Changed — plus the role art plays in identity, family, and aging creatively. Along the way, we dig into movie history filmed right here in St. Louis (Escape from New York), James Gunn stories, NPR programming, and what it really means to serve a community through sound.

What you see on Sundays doesn't happen by accident. As shared in this conversation, “there's a lot that happens that people never see,” and “it takes more than just what happens on the stage.” Behind the scenes is where preparation meets purpose. It's where “teams show up early,” where “people serve faithfully,” and where “every detail matters.” Not for perfection — but because “we want to remove distractions so people can encounter God.” This is about the heart of the church. It's about “people using their gifts,” “serving where they're called,” and understanding that “every role matters.” From production to hospitality, from setup to teardown, “this is how we create space for God to move.” So today, we pull back the curtain and share the why behind the what. This is Motion Church — Behind the Scenes.

The arts remain one of the best ways to preserve culture in a way that people can interact with. Literature, folk music, and art, among others, allow us to experience culture, even secondhand, using tangible sources. Even better, we can create our own responses to this culture using our chosen cultural medium. Painter Ralph Hedley captured ordinary, working-class life around Tyneside and Northumberland in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. We'll explore how he captured scenes of ritual, tradition, and custom in his beautiful paintings, and investigate what they can tell us about the way folklore shows up, primarily in cities. But we're also focusing on his work as an example of how much community rituals mattered in the past as a way of bringing people together. We need that now, more than ever. Let's go and explore the work of Ralph Hedley in this week's episode of Fabulous Folklore. The Mindset Shift That Separates Burnout from Breakthrough You've been told self-care is bubble baths and boundaries. But what if the real self-care is becoming the kind of person who doesn't need to recover from their own emotions every week? That's exactly what Dr. Gabrielle Lyon and I dig into in this episode. Dr. G is a board-certified physician and New York Times bestselling author who has worked with some of the most successful entrepreneurs in the world. And she says the ones who sustain success over time have one thing in common: they stay neutral. Big win? Neutral. Big problem? Neutral. It's just another Tuesday. We go way beyond nutrition and fitness in this conversation. We're talking about why emotional neutrality is one of the most underrated entrepreneurial skills, why discipline is actually the new self-care, and why your health quietly determines how far your business can go. Dr. G also shares how to catch yourself before old patterns start creeping back in and how to use your physical body as a tool for confidence and clarity. If you've ever felt like your emotions are running your business instead of you, this one's for you. HERE ARE THE 3 KEY TAKEAWAYS FROM THIS EPISODE: 1️⃣ Emotional Neutrality Is a Skill, Not a Personality Trait – The best entrepreneurs don't ride the highs and lows. They stay steady because as high as you let yourself go, that's how hard you'll crash. Neutrality isn't boring. It's sustainable. 2️⃣ Discipline Is the New Self-Care – Another episode or glass of wine isn't self-care if they pull you away from your standards. Real self-care is keeping promises to yourself, honoring your commitments, and building trust in your own word. 3️⃣ You Will Never Outgrow Your Health – Your business has a ceiling, and it's your body. You cannot outgrind your physiology. If you want to scale, your health has to come first. Not as a nice-to-have, but as the foundation everything else stands on. The WIP Morning Show opens up their side topic, debating the best movie scenes with a kid featured.
In today's episode, Kaleb and I dive into a topic that might ruffle a few feathers — the state of the modern church, especially mega churches. Inspired by a hilarious (but lowkey convicting) parody by comedian Druski, we talk about the skepticism a lot of people feel toward church nowadays. From prosperity gospel gone wild to pastors with private jets and Dior drip — it's no wonder people are asking, “Is church even biblical anymore?” We also bring on our dear friend and pastor, JP Pokluda, to unpack what the Bible actually says about church, how to find a healthy one, and why yes, you DO need to be plugged into a local body of believers. Oh, and don't worry — there's also plenty of laughs, nostalgia, and a little youth group trauma mixed in.
