Today we are doing a special sermon presentation on the podcast. Instead of one of our priests of the Society of Saint Pius X, we'll re-present a sermon by one of - if not the giant – of preaching in all of Christendom, St. Francis de Sales. And so it might help to know something about the preacher who gave it almost exactly 400 years ago today. St. Francis de Sales was one of the great bishops and spiritual teachers of the early seventeenth century, known not for fiery rhetoric, but for clarity, patience, and a deep pastoral charity. He believed that souls are won for God not by pressure or argument, but by gentleness and love. Even those who opposed him were often disarmed by the kindness and calm strength of his preaching. Saint Francis had a special devotion to the mystery of the Incarnation and to the feast of Christmas. He frequently returned in his sermons and writings to the humility of God made man, marveling that the eternal Word chose to come into the world as a helpless child. For him, Bethlehem was a school of confidence and simplicity, where the soul learns to trust God and to approach Him without fear. The sermon you are about to hear was preached at Midnight Mass on Christmas Day in 1622. The stillness of that hour held deep meaning for St. Francis. While the world slept, he saw heaven quietly at work, revealing a God who comes without spectacle, without force, and without demand, asking only to be welcomed. Leveling these structures, many argue, is essential to making space for Detroit's majority-Black populace to flourish in the wake of white flight and deindustrialization. In 2013, the city set out to demolish more than twenty thousand empty buildings by the end of the decade, with administrators suggesting it would offer an innovative model for what other American cities could do to combat the effects of racist disinvestment. Drawing on extensive ethnographic research with city residents, demolition workers, and public officials, as well as analyses of administrative archives, Demolishing Detroit examines the causes, procedures, and consequences of empty-building demolitions in Detroit. Contrary to stated goals of equity, the book reveals how racism and intersecting inequities endured despite efforts to level them. As calls to dismantle racist systems have become increasingly urgent, this book provides cautionary tales of urban transformations meant to combat white supremacy that ultimately reinforced inequality. Hecate started as the ruling goddess of the Asian region of Caria, and got taken over by the Greeks as the only one able to operate in every realm of the cosmos. This then gave her special responsibility for travellers, doorways and restless ghosts. That slowly darkened her image, so that she became associated with the night, the moon, and magicians. By the Roman period, she was the goddess of sorcery par excellence, invoked for all sorts of enchantments, good or bad. In the late ancient worlds this also turned her into a saviour figure, enabling humans directly to contact the divine. To celebrate Melvyn Bragg's 27 years presenting In Our Time, five well-known fans of the programme have chosen their favourite episodes. Author and columnist Caitlin Moran has picked the episode on the English medieval mystic Margery Kempe and recorded an introduction to it. Margery Kempe (1373-1438) produced an account of her extraordinary life in a book she dictated, "The Book of Margery Kempe." She went on pilgrimage to Jerusalem, to Rome and Santiago de Compostela, purchasing indulgences on her way, met with the anchoress Julian of Norwich and is honoured by the Church of England each 9th November. She sometimes doubted the authenticity of her mystical conversations with God, as did the authorities who saw her devotional sobbing, wailing and convulsions as a sign of insanity and dissoluteness. Every Christmas season, A Christmas Carol returns to our screens and pages as a story of generosity, redemption, and hope. But beneath the familiar narrative, Charles Dickens was also making a powerful argument—one that challenges how society views the poor, children, and human worth itself.In today's Christmas episode of Faith & Finance, we sat down with Jerry Bowyer, our resident economist and president of Bowyer Research, to explore the deeper economic and theological message Dickens embedded in this classic tale.The Meaning Behind “Surplus Population”One of the most disturbing lines in A Christmas Carol comes from Ebenezer Scrooge, who suggests that the poor might be better off dying to reduce the “surplus population.”Jerry explained that this phrase wasn't casual or poetic—it was loaded with meaning in Dickens' day. It reflected the influence of Thomas Malthus, an economist whose ideas shaped early 19th-century thinking. Malthus believed population growth would always outpace food and resources, making widespread poverty inevitable. His conclusion? Society should discourage the poor from having children.Dickens deliberately places this language in the mouth of his villain. Scrooge isn't just cruel—he's the embodiment of a philosophy that treats people as economic problems rather than human beings made in God's image.Jerry noted that Dickens was, in effect, writing A Christmas Carol as a rebuttal to Malthus.By the time Dickens wrote the story, Britain was entering what economists now call the Great Takeoff—a period of unprecedented growth in productivity, trade, and human flourishing. Malthus had predicted catastrophe just before abundance exploded.Dickens highlights this abundance through scenes overflowing with food, trade goods, and celebration. The message is clear: people don't merely consume resources—they create them.Scarcity, Trauma, and Scrooge's PastDickens doesn't excuse Scrooge's cruelty, but he does explain it. Through the Ghost of Christmas Past, we see a lonely boy shaped by hunger, cold, and deprivation.Jerry pointed out that Scrooge's scarcity mindset is rooted in trauma. His fear of lack leads him to believe that God—if He exists at all—is stingy. That fear shapes his economics, his relationships, and his resistance to generosity.The turning point comes when Scrooge encounters the Ghost of Christmas Present. When told the spirit has over 1,800 brothers—each representing a Christmas—Scrooge responds, “What a large family to provide for.”It's another glimpse of his scarcity thinking. And it draws sharp rebuke.Jerry emphasized that Dickens is confronting the idea that more people mean less provision. In contrast, Scripture reveals a God who is generous, creative, and abundant—and who commands humanity to fill the earth, not fear it.No One Is DisposableBy the end of the story, Scrooge is transformed. He becomes generous, relational, and deeply concerned for others—especially children like Tiny Tim.Jerry observed that in a Malthusian worldview, Tiny Tim is expendable. But Dickens—and the gospel—say otherwise. There are no surplus people.Even Jesus Himself, Jerry noted, would have been classified as “surplus population” by such a system—born poor, dependent, and unwanted by the powerful.The language may have changed, but the ideas persist. Whenever society treats children as burdens, the poor as problems, or human life as expendable in the name of efficiency or sustainability, we are hearing echoes of Scrooge before his redemption.Dickens reminds us that economics is always moral—and theology always shapes how we view people.Watching With New EyesAs Jerry put it, A Christmas Carol isn't just a holiday story.
