Happy Monday, yo! We've got much warmer temps headed our way later this week. Definitely see a firepit in my future this weekend. In the news this morning, a recall on Johnsonville Brats, the construction on Highway 16 begins this week, authorities are still looking for one of the two missing boaters in the Dells, a woman who is serving a life sentence for killing & dismembering a man in 2022 violently attacked her attorney in court the other day, and a the popular "Torpedo Bats" are keeping Dingbat Bats in Verona busier than normal. In sports, the Bucks beat the Pelicans yesterday for their 4th straight win and are also in the playoffs, the Brewers took three out of four from the Reds this weekend, the UConn women's basketball team won it's 12th National Championship over the weekend, and the men's National Championship game is tonight on CBS. Elsewhere in sports, Alexander Ovechkin finally passed Wayne Gretzky yesterday with his 895th career goal, Denny Hamlin got a win yesterday in the throwback paint schemes, and Vlad Guerrero Jr. is getting PAID by the Blue Jays. We talked about what's on TV tonight and played a shower-edition of "Who'd You Rather?" Plus, a very sad cat was reunited with it's original owner, and a kid had some random strangers help him celebrate his 8th birthday while at a park. Today is National Beer Day, so we looked at what states have the cheapest cases of beer, and A recent survey found that one out of every fifty people think they could beat a horse in a 100-meter dash. As if. Check out this parachutist who got stuck on the roof of a stadium while trying to deliver the game ball for a rugby match. Luckily, he wasn't injured in the accident. And in today's edition of "Bad News with Happy Music", we had stories about a naked man in a Dollar Store, a guy who got an odd parking ticket, a man named "Speedy Gonzalez" who has robbed multiple Walmarts, a dude who had his emotional support tigers seized by law enforcement, and a #FloridaWoman who got busted for banging in a graveyard. This morning our phone system went out, so we dug up every wacky story in the news possible! Dave is set to make some money tonight in college basketball, there was more madness in the sky, and a guy created an AI lawyer to defend himself in court. It's Dave's "holy week" with The Masters beginning on Thursday, shared our Penny Power "Peeve(s) of the Week," and heard about a real life Speedy Gonzalez! Welcome to The Singers Talk Podcast based on my book of the same name. This week you'll hear my conversation with Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Destructee, and one of the iconic founders of Punk Rock: John Lydon (PiL, The Sex Pistols). In this episode you're gonna hear us talk about his unique approach to being a singer, and his philosophy behind the inner workings of the voice. We speak about his horrific stage fright, his false demons, and surprising shyness. How he stole some of his vocal style from Speedy Gonzalez, why it's important to shred the rulebook (and the Sex Pistols), and his continuing search for something that hasn't been sung already. All my writer's royalties from sales of the book benefit the kids and families at St. Jude Children's Research Hospital through our Music Gives to St. Jude Kids campaign. Back in the 70s there may have been a little too many visits to the cookie jar. When you chose to dance a little bit closer; you hoped your partner liked a little bit more of you. Alas it is only you who could decide when you're just the right size. This week, let's spend the night together and have a listen to Charo and the Salsoul Orchestra Cuchi Cuchi. In aflevering 56 praten we over superfoods. We hope you think this episode is the cat's pajamas!

This week Speedy Gonzales comes on and talks about F Class and Benchrest as well as building rifles and reloading! This is a teaser episode with him and were planning on doing several more to discuss specific topics in the world of precision rifle shooting!
Being a fugitive from justice is a stressful experience. I know, because I experienced this. I experienced it briefly, just for a nano-second, in the REM dream state that most of us experience just before we wake up. My crime? I was caught on camera driving down a North American highway. I was over the speed limit by one mile an hour and caught without a licence. For this, I now faced extradition and a life in a penal colony. On the up side, it was not likely to be a long life under these circumstances. While I waited for my good fortune, in having woken up, to sink in, there was tea. I confess to having a bit of a green eye when it comes to driving. It used to be, that as my peers got wheels, I got more and more frustrated at the limits that not being able to drive apparently placed on me. What I know now, but I didn't know then, was that we all exercise our freedoms differently and pay for our freedoms in different ways. Sometimes you have to ask for what you need. Sometimes you have to queue for it, sometimes, you get rained on while you wait and sometimes everything goes wonderfully well. What you will never have to do is worry about losing your no claims bonus, scratching your paintwork or remembering to have a blanket and a shovel in your boot in case you are forced to spend the night in your car buried under a snow drift. Now all of this does not mean I have not been tempted to speed down the wide open roads of South Dakota. I did once judder down the narrow lanes of #Danbury Ring in a #mini maxi. It was a short lived stint behind the wheel and culminated in close contact with a hedge. The Son gave me an off road driving experience. It turns out that this is a popular gift from Mothers to their teenage sons. Despite the Son's advance phone call, there was still some incredulity that it was me, not him, here to loop my way around a disused aerodrome. After a safety briefing, the teenage boys and me made our way to our cars. It's wasn't a formula one start. No running permitted and rather more anoraks than could fit into a high performance model. Then came the explanation of steering wheels, brakes and so forth, all delivered in a tone of total tedium by the instructor. He did not appear to share my excitement at the prospect of driving round in circles with someone who couldn't see the road ahead. I think I was a natural. “ewww. Speedy Gonzalez……slow down” the instructor said. I did but speed is relative. Of course, I didn't have the advantage of his view. Pot holes, it transpires, are more exciting if tackled head on than avoided. There is something exhilarating about notching it up a gear. Power steering is a must. The chicane is thrilling if all you have is voice commands to go on. When being driven by someone who can't see where they are going, have a safe word like “Stop”. Duel controls are a must. Next time I'm getting an automatic. All that notching it up a gear made my left leg ache for days afterwards. Meantime, day to day freedoms are exercised on foot, on buses, on trains and taxis. The joy of this approach is that I'm not sitting in my car on my own, but enjoying snippets of other people's lives and lots of fabulous conversations with strangers that I might not otherwise have had. I'm the richer for it.
Their names are synonymous with Saturday mornings and the laughter of children. Bugs Bunny, Daffy Duck, Elmer Fudd, Sylvester the Cat. Generations began their weekends by welcoming these comical characters into their homes and, as a result, they helped shape the culture that they entertained. Porky Pig, Tweetie Pie, Foghorn Leghorn, the Road Runner. The golden age of cartoons saw an increasing number of production companies spring up throughout Hollywood and would help revolutionize a television industry that was still in its fledgling years. Barney Rubble, Mr. Spacely, Peppy la Pew, Speedy Gonzalez. These illustrated icons helped amass untold fame and wealth that is still being felt today, some 80+ years later. Captain Caveman, Woody Woodpecker, Dino the Dinosaur, Marvin the Martian. But there's one name that you might not know and it's imperative to understanding the true scope of this time period, as well as this entire genre of entertainment. You see, without him, there would have been no stories… and these characters, well their voices, would never have been heard. Hear their stories, and his, on this episode of The Missing Chapter. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/themissingchapter/support
This week's episode of Your Stories Don't Define You is part 2 of a series I'm exploring: Last week I shared what it is like to have Command in your top talents using the StrengthsFinder assessment. This week I'm sharing about what my top two talents, Strategic & Activator look like for me, and next week I'll share stories of how these talents, combined with Ideation and Adaptability, all of my top 5, show up in my life, for better and for worse. As a Gallup certified StrengthsFinder coach, I've taken opportunities to work with other coaches for two reasons, one is that I believe in this stuff, the idea that when we understand our own way of thinking, our natural, instinctive talents, and when we understand where we might be getting in our own way, we find more satisfaction in our lives. Another reason is that to be a coach and to have a coach demonstrates my belief that this works, that working with a good coach adds value. I know that the more I know about my own talents and blind spots, the more effective I can be for my clients. As I mentioned, today you'll hear how my top two strengths, Strategic & Activator, show up in my daily life, and some strategies I now use to make sure they're working for me and not against me. When I saw the word Strategic on the Strengths report as my number one talent I laughed out loud. “I'm not strategic. This so far off. This is one of the reasons I don't like these personality assessments.” But because it was a dear friend, Tom Dietzler, who gave me this gift, I decided to look at my results in a different way. I sent the description of Strategic as it was written in my report to my sister and husband, the two people I believe know me sometimes better than I know myself, and did NOT include the word Strategic in the message. I asked: “What do you think of this? Do you think it describes me?” I didn't want to influence their answers, so I did my best to ask without a hint of how ridiculous I thought it was. My sister responded almost immediately: “Wow, Sarah, they sure have your number. That's exactly you.” I called her to ask for specific examples, stories of times when she thought that description showed up in our interactions. She had LOTS of examples. So did my husband. That's when I invested in a StrengthsFinder coach. I had to find out more about this talent that I couldn't see in myself. She called me Speedy Gonzalez. My first coach after becoming a Gallup certified StrengthsFinder coach had a gorgeous Barcelonan accent, and she said: “Sarah, you're like Speedy Gonzalez. Imagine you notice the village is running low on cheese, so you take money from the village coffer, run fast, as you do, to a nearby village, buy cheese, and run back. Problem solved! Except that when you return, you hear the villagers having a discussion about what kind of cheese to get this time… or maybe they won't get cheese, maybe it'll be salami instead… But you've already solved the problem, right?” I'm such a visual person, I immediately imagined the tiny mouse running, like a blur, to the next village and running back carrying a huge block of cheese over his head. And just like that (snap), I had a deep insight into how I sometimes get in my own way. My strategic brain immediately comes up with a solution to a puzzle or problem. Many times it comes so fast that I'm not even sure I thought about it, the solution simply popped into my head. And because my Strategic is immediately followed by Activator, I just GO. I take the first step and know I'll deal with obstacles or consequences as I meet them… or hit them face first. Most of the time this way of thinking is awesome. It guides me to the fastest, simplest solutions to complex problems. I make decisions quickly, and the majority of the time, they have been excellent decisions. When I worked as a Peoplesoft consultant with Federal agencies in the DC area, those skills are what made me successful in identifying solutions for the help desk, creating easy to understand training materials, and finding solutions to implementation issues around data collection. But for most of my life I considered myself impulsive because I didn't realize my brain was actually coming to the solution before I could fully process what that meant. The map is in my head and I'm taking the first step. And I don't always take stakeholders on the ride with me, causing communication issues and the appearance that I'm impulsive. Here's an example: When I get into the car to run more than one errand, before I even plug my seatbelt in I have the route in my head. Not because I'm a planner, or because I think about it with intention, but because that's how my brain works. The route is specific, many things taken into account, like not wanting to turn left across traffic on a busy street, not wanting to backtrack but wanting an efficient route, and knowing the grocery store has to be the last stop because it's 80 degrees outside and I'll have frozen peas in the car. It wasn't until a few months after my first conversation with a coach that I came to this realization. And years later I continue to see where my Strategic shows up in my daily activities. What's especially interesting to me is that many people struggle in seeing that first, number 1 talent as a talent, or even as something that truly describes them. Here's why: Those top two strengths are so natural, so innate, that we cannot even see how they're unique or special. I can tell when I've identified a true talent when I ask my client to tell me about the most common compliment they receive and they tell me, and then qualify it by saying something like: “But everyone does that.” Or “Doesn't everyone do that?” They dismiss the compliment because the skill or talent comes too easily for them. They cannot own this natural talent because it wasn't a struggle to get good at it… isn't that kind of silly when you think about it? Here's another way I know I've uncovered something special in a client: When I ask them about how they feel when other people don't think in the natural way they do, like when my husband drives us on errands and I have to bite my tongue because he doesn't seem to have a route in his head, it feels like each turn he takes is an assault on my brain. I get annoyed, I'll admit it, and I used to think: “How is this possible? He's the smartest guy I know! Why would he turn left here, doesn't he know that now he'll have to go left across traffic on the busiest street in town?” I worked with a coach to better understand my talents and how to apply them with intention, it also helped me know which talent to employ at different times. When I get annoyed because someone isn't doing something the way I would do it, I use my Ideation (my #3 talent that magically comes up with ideas all. The. Time.), to focus my brain on curiosity about the situation. I begin to ask myself questions like: Why am I getting prickly & annoyed, what's triggering this? Does it matter right now if he takes a different route, am I in a hurry? And when I've answered those questions, I may ask my husband what his plan his for our errands, what he's thinking about for our shopping list. I do this at work, with my children, and even when I'm driving behind someone who seems to be lost. My drivers are Strategic / Activator, neither of which are in the relationship building domain of the four StrengthsFinder domains. That alone is a clue about where my motivation is, which is mostly task-based, not people-based. And now that I know that, my communication has shifted, I'm using those talents with far more intention, and my relationships and leadership skills have improved dramatically. The only way we grow as humans, the only way we can truly find satisfaction in our relationships, is to be self-reflective. This is not the same as being hyper critical of ourselves! Being self-reflective means understanding our role in every situation, in every relationship. What am I doing to move this conversation in a positive direction? What was my role in the conflict with my coworker? What natural talents am I using in ways that are positive, and where am I getting in my own way? If you enjoyed this podcast brief, stay tuned for next week's episode, when we'll explore Ideation & Adaptability, rounding out my top 5 talents. --- ABOUT SARAH: "Uncovering the right stories for the right audiences so executives, leaders, public speakers, and job seekers can clearly and actively demonstrate their character, values, and vision." In my work with coaching clients, I guide people to improve their communication using storytelling as the foundation of our work together. What I've realized over years of coaching and podcasting is that the majority of people don't realize the impact of the stories they share - on their internal messages, and on the people they're sharing them with. My work with leaders and people who aspire to be leaders follows a similar path to the interviews on my podcast, uncovering pivotal moments in their lives and learning how to share them to connect more authentically with others, to make their presentations and speaking more engaging, to reveal patterns that have kept them stuck or moved them forward, and to improve their relationships at work and at home. The audiobook, Your Stories Don't Define You, How You Tell Them Will is now available! Included with your purchase are two bonus tracks, songs recorded by Sarah's band, Spare Change, in her living room in Montana.

Truly Inconsequential – Not all characters are created equal. Mr. Greer and Brimstone of The Grindhouse Radio debate this week's zeroes in front of a live audience. It'll be determined in real time who will remain inconsequential, and who may be liberated back into the hero's category. This week, a special Cinco De Mayo episode as they argue Speedy Gonzalez from Looney Tunes; as well as – Diego Marquez from Go Diego Go. Do you think Speedy will be gone in a flash; or does Diego get lost in his cousin Dora's bucket cut. Question is, who will remain truly inconsequential.

Welcome to Episode 142 of Broadcast Geeks! On this podcast we discuss all things geek and nerd related, provided our DVR's have space and our Netflix accounts are our own and none others. This week, a foursome of the Geeks (Jake, Mitch, Nate and Matt Orrin) are joined by Evan Johnson and are back in the Comedy Room Room for another packed episode of geeky goodness. We had just seen Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse when we recorded this and, boy-howdy, we were pumped! The movie was so good, and was referenced by someone as the best superhero movie made, possibly both animated and just in general. Everything about it was solid, especially the animation and the writing. The story was great and so was Nicholas Cage, but we expected him to be great. Who was YOUR favorite character? We jump in and out of Spidey talk throughout the episode. It was interesting how powerful a role guns played out in the movie, used by people that don't really use or need guns. Curious? All that talk about everyone's favorite NYC hero got us talking about other heroes in NYC. Could we see some sort of Spiderham spin-off show, or other characters, that maybe aren't so popular. We then started talking about Sesame Street adding a homeless character and realized they already have one...Oscar the Grouch, which might explain his demeanor. He lives in the trash, and bothers people walking by him all day. Who knows what will happen if they continue to gentrify the Grouch. Back to the DCU, which is still our favorite streaming service. Titans has reached its finale, and we discuss it a little bit. We talk about Batman killing people, in any of his realms, because it sure seems to happen a lot. Though some iterations of him are better than others, such as Brave and Bold which is way better a show than it should be. We're all getting stoked for Doom Patrol, which just recently released a new trailer. Anthony Crawford jumped in to give us a live Crawford-ism: Who would win in a race...Speedy Gonzalez or Roadrunner? We discuss that, but do you have an opinion on it? We transitioned into Glass, because that looks super exciting. We discussed implications of that world, and does the villian create himself by creating a superhero? It brings us back to the topic of whether Batman is responsible for his villians, or vice versa. Give it a listen. You can send your feedback and show topic ideas to broadcastgeeks@gmail.com.
