TODAY'S DEVOTION: He's still there. The book is called Acts of the Apostles, and we're going to see a lot of the apostles in the days ahead, especially Paul and Peter. But the person we're going to see the most is Jesus. This book could be called the Acts of Jesus because he's still there with his followers, doing what he always does. But now he's moving beyond Israel and is outside the city of Damascus. He's about to do those things that we've seen him do. He's about to overwhelm one of his enemies with light and forgiveness and love. He'll blind Saul and transform him into Paul. He's on his way up into another upper room where people are mourning the loss of a generous-hearted woman named Tabitha. Peter's there in that room for sure. But the writer of this book doesn't want you to miss the fact that Jesus is there too. If this moment sounds familiar, it should, because it echoes back to Jesus in an upper room, the room of Jairus, the synagogue ruler, with his twelve-year-old daughter, a girl Jesus called Talitha. Both Tabitha and Talitha had passed from life to death. He's still doing what he always does. He's bringing life where there was once death. And he's here with us today too, doing now what he has always done. He's overwhelming our resistant hearts with his light, forgiveness, and love, opening eyes to see more and more just who he is, the way he did with Paul. He's also entering into the upper rooms of our hearts where there is death and a need for resurrection and hope. There he takes us by the hand and says words like, it's time to get up. It's time to live. He's still there doing what he does. He's bringing his light and forgiveness and love. And he's doing this all around the world, even today. In fact, he's in the room with you right now. Do you hear him? Do you sense his presence? Hear his word of forgiveness and light and love? Let him take you by the hand and raise you up to new life. Today. That's a prayer that I have for my own soul. That's a prayer that I have for my family, for my wife, and my daughters, and my son. And that's a prayer that I have for you. May it be so. TODAY'S PRAYERS: Lord God Almighty and everlasting father you have brought us in safety to this new day preserve us with your Mighty power that we might not fall into sin or be overcome by adversity. And in all we do, direct us to the fulfilling of your purpose  through Jesus Christ Our Lord amen.   Oh God you have made of one blood all the peoples of the earth and sent your blessed son to preach peace to those who are far and those who are near. Grant that people everywhere may seek after you, and find you. Bring the nations into your fold, pour out your Spirit on all flesh, and hasten the coming of your kingdom through Jesus Christ our Lord, Amen.   And now Lord,  make me an instrument of your peace.  Where there is hatred let me sow love. Where there is injury, pardon.  Where there is doubt, faith. Where there is despair, hope.  Where there is darkness, light.  And where there is sadness,  Joy.  Oh Lord grant that I might not seek to be consoled as to console. To be understood as to understand, to be loved as to love.  For it is in the giving that we receive, in the pardoning that we are pardoned, it is in the dying that we are born unto eternal life.  Amen And now as our Lord has taught us we are bold to pray... Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven, give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our tresspasses as we forgive those who trespass against us, and lead us not unto temptation, but deliver us from evil, for thine is the Kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Let your stomach be a balloon inflate,  deflate. Scripture for Meditation NIV Genesis 1 Now the serpent was more crafty than any of the wild animals the Lord God had made. He said to the woman, "Did God really say, 'You must not eat from any tree in the garden'?" 2 The woman said to the serpent, "We may eat fruit from the trees in the garden, 3 but God did say, 'You must not eat fruit from the tree that is in the middle of the garden, and you must not touch it, or you will die.'" NKJV 3 Now the serpent was more cunning than any beast of the field which the Lord God had made. And he said to the woman, "Has God indeed said, 'You shall not eat of every tree of the garden'?" 2 And the woman said to the serpent, "We may eat the fruit of the trees of the garden; 3 but of the fruit of the tree which is in the midst of the garden, God has said, 'You shall not eat it, nor shall you touch it, lest you die.' " Reflection on Scripture: I think sometimes when we talk about life we longingly consider how good life would be if Adam and Eve didn't mess everything up. I have heard some commentary on Genesis that says the fall of Adam is not what God intended. I find this a confusing take. God prepared his saving plan since before the formation of the world. Satan did not defeat God on the first real opportunity to do so. Satan is always trying to mess up God's plan but evil will lose. God is sovereign and all powerful. He is the one who placed the tree of Good and Evil in the garden to begin with. He did not place it a thousand miles away. He placed it in the garden. The Forbidden fruit was from the Tree of Good an evil. When Satan comes tempting you, trying to be crafty and derail your plan. Turn away and turn to God, the true source of eternal knowledge of good and evil. He is the one that makes it possible for our eyes to be opened. He opens the eyes of the blind. He takes us from our weakness and teaches us how to love Him. He teaches us how to overcome our sin. He shows us the way back to the Father and it is only through Him. When you are tempted it may seem as though God's plan is breaking down. This is not a failure of God's plan. It is a fulfillment of it. God prepared salvation for you since before your birth and before the creation of the world. God will not fail you. God's plan is never derailed by difficulty. God's plan is never derailed by our sin. God's plan will never fail. That plan includes offering salvation to those who will trust on the holy name of Jesus. Trust in the one who never fails.  Meditation of Prayer: Pray as directed by the Spirit. Dedicate these moments to the patient waiting, when you feel ready ask God for understanding you desire from Him. Meditation of God and His Glory / Hesychasm: I invite you to sit in silence feeling patient for your own faults and trials. In fact, the ink hasn't even dried yet on this covenant agreement between God and his people before they go ahead and break it. And boy, do they break it. They break it in such grand fashion that it's almost comical. In fact, Moses even notes that the enemies of the people stand at a distance, amused. They saw this dark humor, that these people who had been delivered by God were abandoning him so early and worshiping a god made out of their own earrings. The treachery of the human heart is no laughing matter, however. And Moses pleads with God. He appeals to God, to the covenant promises made to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, based on the relationship that he had with these people that he knew by name. He does not appeal to the covenant law. He doesn't appeal to God as judge. No. He appeals to his relationship and to the relationship he had with the three patriarchs which was established in faith. Abraham believed that God would make his descendants as numerous as the stars in the sky, just like God told him. He believed that all the nations of the earth would be blessed through his seed, through his descendant. That a champion, a Messiah would come through him. And that this Messiah would transform the treacherous, law-breaking, idol-worshiping hearts of every human being. He would do it by invading our humanity and putting on flesh. He would accomplish what we could not do. He would remain faithful where we have been faithless. And he would offer himself as a perfect sacrifice on our behalf that we might have that relationship with God that we were created for, restored and renewed. And he would do this on behalf of all. And that includes you, my friend. He has come to draw you into his very life—the vicarious humanity of Christ. Christ being faithful where you have not been faithful. Christ being obedient when we failed to be obedient. Christ forgiving when we have failed to forgive. Christ being all in all on behalf of all. And the prayer of my own heart today is that I will see it. I'll catch a greater glimpse of that good news that Philip saw, of the good news that Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob saw. That I will see it and that I will know his freedom and his joy. And that's a prayer that I have for my family too, for my wife and my daughters and my son. And that's a prayer that I have for you. May it be so. Exodus 4-6

After their debut album, The Firm, hit gold in the US in 1985, fans figured that Jimmy Page and Paul Rodgers would tour to support it and not only play songs off the album but also include hits from their back catalogs. While expecting reworked Led Zeppelin and Bad Company songs, they instead got songs from Paul Rodgers 1983 solo album Cut Loose and Jimmy's Death Wish II soundtrack. Then, Jimmy's performance with his old LZ bandmates at Live Aid was considered an outright disaster. Everyone figured the 2nd Firm album would be Jimmy finally putting on his old Guitar God robes and delivering what they'd been waiting for. Unfortunately, Mean Business never really lived up to the fans expectations and though there were a few flashes, the guitar heroics were missing. Despite the extraordinary work of bassist Tony Franklin, whose writing contribution Dreaming is a standout on the album, it was as if Jimmy was just going through the motions. Though Paul's voice is as strong and rich as ever, most of the lyrics weren't very deep or super relatable. The steady hand of UAWIL guest Chris Slade on the drums gave everyone the space to do what they wanted but for Jimmy, it wasn't inspiring. You saw glimpses in the solo on Live in Peace and on a couple of others but if you were waiting for Jimmy to cut loose, well it never really happened. There are highlights like All The Kings Horses which hit #1 on the US rock charts for 4 weeks in early 1986 and the closer Spirit of Love lets everyone do their thing. Fortune Hunter is rifftastic in getting the album going but there's a slow down around 3:30 that kills the momentum. Cadillac is so long and murky that it's almost unlistenable - why did they choose that as the second song? Eventually, all involved went on to do other things as members of supergroups always do. It was an incredible lineup but they just couldn't capture the magic that fans were hoping for when they learned about The Firm. Here Isaac is not giving us a technique for moral improvement. He is unveiling an icon. Behind his austere language of toil and Scripture and withdrawal stands a single, luminous vision: the human heart being slowly remade into the dwelling place of God. Asceticism is not a set of behaviors aimed at self mastery. It is the patient clearing of space so that the Trinity may come to rest within us. Everything Isaac names flows from this one mystery. He begins with what looks like a chain of practices. Bodily toil guards purity. Scripture sustains the toil. Hope and fear steady the soul. Prayer and withdrawal from men protect the heart. But Isaac is not describing a ladder that climbs upward by human effort. He is describing how the soul is held open until it can be seized by the Spirit. These disciplines do not save. They keep us available for salvation. They prevent the heart from sealing itself against grace. This is why Isaac speaks so soberly about the Scriptures. Until the Comforter has come and taken up His dwelling in the depths of the person we need the written word to keep us from drifting into forgetfulness and fantasy. The Scriptures are not information. They are a form of remembrance. They press the shape of Christ into the memory of the heart so that when our mind is scattered and the passions begin to speak their lies we are not carried away from our true homeland. But Isaac also knows that even Scripture is provisional. There comes a moment when the teaching no longer comes from without but from within. When the Spirit penetrates the noetic powers of the soul the heart itself becomes the book. The same Word who once spoke in letters now speaks in fire. This is not a rejection of Scripture but its fulfillment. The written Gospel gives way to the living Christ engraved upon the heart. Here we touch the heart of Eastern Christian mysticism. Salvation is not merely a verdict. It is a transformation of perception. The center of knowing shifts. The ego no longer stands as the interpreter of reality. The Spirit becomes the teacher. And because this teaching comes from God Himself it is not lost. It does not evaporate under distraction or suffering. It remains as a living memory of communion. Isaac then strikes at something that terrifies the ego. He distinguishes between good thoughts and a good heart. We are accustomed to judging ourselves by the surface weather of the mind. We watch our thoughts rise and fall like waves and imagine that our worth before God is decided by their movement. Isaac says this is an illusion. Thoughts come and go like sea winds. They stir the waters but they do not constitute the depths. The heart is the foundation. It is the place where we truly consent or refuse. A person may be flooded with thoughts and yet remain rooted in God. Another may have refined ideas and yet be inwardly turned toward self. What matters is not the agitation of the surface but the direction of the ground beneath it. This is a devastating word for the controlling ego. We want to manage our thoughts. We want to produce holiness by technique. We want to ensure our standing before God by monitoring every inner movement. Isaac tells us that this entire project is misguided. If judgment were passed on every thought we would be condemned and justified a thousand times a day. That is not how God sees us. God looks at the heart. He looks at where we have placed our deepest trust. And here the abyss opens. To let go of the ego is not to become passive or vague. It is to cease making ourselves the measure of reality. It is to fall into the love of God without conditions. The heart that consents to this fall becomes a foundation of peace even while the mind continues to be stirred by many winds. This is why the saints can live in such freedom. They are no longer organized around self protection. They have entrusted themselves to the Paschal mystery. For Isaac all of this is Christological. The Spirit who teaches the heart is the Spirit poured out by the crucified and risen Lord. The abyss into which we fall is the same abyss into which Christ descended in His self emptying love. To enter this path is to be drawn into the very life of the Trinity. We are no longer managing ourselves toward virtue. We are being re created from within by divine love. This is the beauty of the ascetical mystical tradition of the East. It does not offer self improvement. It offers transfiguration. It does not promise control. It invites surrender. It does not measure us by the turbulence of our thoughts but by the quiet yes of the heart. Isaac shows us a humanity that has learned to rest in God even while the winds still blow. A humanity no longer driven by fear or fantasy but grounded in the living presence of the Spirit. This is what we have become in Christ. The seemingly endless list of tabernacle instructions are so specific, so exact, it can leave a person wondering what it's all about. The tabernacle was a place where God would meet man in a unique way. It was an intersection between heaven and earth, between God and man. The covenant between God and his people was affirmed there. The stone tablets of the covenant were stored there in the ark. The lid of the ark was the place of atonement. All these things were taking place in the tabernacle. And we are told that the tabernacle was a pattern of things that were in heaven. The tabernacle helped tell the story of God, of his love and salvation that he brings to the whole world. This was an important place. These are important symbols. But it was only a shadow of something far greater, of things yet to come. It was a shadow of Christ. Christ came to be the intersection between heaven and earth. He came to tabernacle and dwell with us. He was the place of atonement—the person of atonement that takes away the sins of the world. In John 2:19, Jesus says, "Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up." He's referring to himself there, his own body, because he's the fulfillment of the shadow we see in Exodus. We're not only reconciled to God through his body, he's also given us his life right here, right now. We see this in Stephen. He was full of the Spirit and wisdom, so full that his countenance is being lit up. He's dwelling, he's abiding in the tabernacle, if you will—in Christ. He's abiding in Christ at that very moment. And we too can experience this abiding life in Christ. We can abide in the greater tabernacle—in Him. We can live from this place of forgiveness in his presence. And we too can find the power for life and healing here and now. And the prayer of my own heart today is that I will see this through the shadows of these pages and that I will see it even through the shadows of day-to-day life, that I'll have ears to hear, eyes that are wide open to abide in the mercy and the grace of this given day, to abide in Him. That's the prayer that I have for my soul. That's the prayer that I have for my family, for my wife and my daughters and my son. And that's a prayer that I have for you. May it be so. TODAY'S PRAYERS: Lord God Almighty and everlasting father you have brought us in safety to this new day preserve us with your Mighty power that we might not fall into sin or be overcome by adversity. And in all we do, direct us to the fulfilling of your purpose  through Jesus Christ Our Lord amen.   Oh God you have made of one blood all the peoples of the earth and sent your blessed son to preach peace to those who are far and those who are near. The Power of a Spiritual Record by Autumn Dickson I've given this message before, and I'll probably give this message again someday. This message has been repeated so frequently throughout scripture so I figure it's not the end of the world if I repeat it too. It is something that has been taught by modern day prophets. It has changed my life profoundly. If someone were just beginning their family, what advice would you give them? What would you focus on? If you could give them advice that they were supposed to read over and over and over throughout their lives, what would you emphasize? If you were trying to teach a group of people how to build a society, which principles do you think would be some of the most valuable to learn? Over the past couple weeks, we have been reading about the beginning of one of God's projects. It includes the building of a world. It includes the building of God's family, and the building of a new society upon the earth. There was a father and mother and a whole lineage of people. I have so many questions about how some of these things came to pass. How did they build their society? How did it change? Did they even consider the idea that they were setting up the foundation of a society? I'm not sure. But out of every message that the Lord could have sent us, one of the messages that He gave us was this. Moses 6:5 And a book of remembrance was kept, in the which was recorded, in the language of Adam, for it was given unto as many as called upon God to write by the spirit of inspiration; A book of remembrance was kept. It was given unto as many as called upon God to write by the spirit of inspiration. Was this one of the pieces of advice you would have chosen to give to this new society you were directing? Because it was one of the pieces of advice that God thought was important. Do you call upon God? If you do, here is the bible teaching us that you've been called upon to write by the spirit of inspiration. Please stay with me for a moment if you don't feel like you're ready for this message. If you hate writing and reading, if it's not something that you particularly enjoy, stick with me. A book of remembrance doesn't have to look like what you're picturing. I almost feel bad sharing this message because writing is something that comes naturally to me. Even if I wouldn't classify myself as overly talented, I love writing. I've written regularly in a journal since I was 14 years old (and boy do I wish I could burn those journals). My journals were not always written according to inspiration. For a lot of my life, my journals were where I angrily wrote about my angel parents that I didn't appreciate, about boys, about friendships at a time in my life when I didn't know how to be a good friend. It wasn't until later that my journals became filled with true, uplifting purpose. Writing in a journal has blessed my life. I have gone back to read what I used to care about. I have been able to observe the growth I had and watch how the Lord guided my life, page by page. It's actually pretty fun. Not to mention, I record all the absolutely ridiculous things my children say and that is one of the best blessings of my life. But the commandment we find in this verse is not necessarily what you think. It's not about writing what you did every day or even every month; I love writing, and I think that would bore me to death. My life isn't exciting enough for that. We need to rethink what it means to keep a journal. When God gives a commandment, it's to draw us closer to Him so let's look at our book of remembrance through that lens. And as a matter of fact, let's look at another phrase from the verse that we read from Moses. Write by the spirit of inspiration. If that sounds intimidating, let me try and ease your worries. Let's look at what it means to receive inspiration. Inspiration is when God gives you thoughts and feelings to propel you in a specific direction. He gives it to you. When someone gives something to you, are you the one who is supposed to be stressing about how the gift makes its way into your lap? No! That's not your job. You just have to make yourself available to receive it. Hence the writing. Make yourself available and trust the Lord to give you what you need. He knows how to give. I have one practical piece of advice for starting your book of remembrance. It's just one piece of advice to start things out so that God could push you in the correct direction that will fit your personality and circumstances. Open a journal when you're praying, open a note on your phone, or open your computer to type. Just open it and make it available once a day for one week. When you're praying. That's my tip. You don't have to write your prayers like I do. I just do that because it helps me focus when the last seven years of my life have been interrupted approximately every three minutes. Don't do it before bed; I never write my prayers before bed because I'm not in the proper mindset to write by inspiration. I'm too tired. The Spirit can whisper through a lot of things but apparently not my exhaustion (or maybe I'm just bad at listening through my exhaustion?). It doesn't have to be a long prayer. It doesn't have to be an impressive prayer. Open it, and simply start talking. He may not say anything immediately because He usually only talks when He needs to. You may start to feel like you should pick up your pen. Trust the feeling and do it. Even if you don't know what you're going to write, just start and open yourself up and He will speak. It's remarkable. You will feel so close to God. Just as the verse taught, if you have called upon the name of God, you have been called to write by inspiration. He wants to talk to you too. I testify that God loves you and knows how to give you inspiration. I testify that it's not your job to figure out how to receive a gift; it's just your job to try and make yourself available to receive it. I testify that writing by the inspiration of God will change your life as it has changed mine. Autumn Dickson was born and raised in a small town in Texas. This month marks a bitter annual anniversary for NASA. On February 1, 1967, the crew of Apollo 1 was killed in a horrific fire on the pad in Florida. Years later, as the space shuttle Challenger ascended on February 28, 1986, it was destroyed mid-flight with a loss of seven crewmembers. Finally, on February 1, 2003, the shuttle Columbia was lost during reentry, again with a crew of seven. This episode is a remembrance of these tragic events with Gerry Griffin, former Apollo Flight Director and Director of the Johnson Space Center among his many other roles with NASA and beyond.
