It's a tight episode, content-wise with just Black Doves, Severance and Reservation Dogs officially on the docket, but we are joined this week, once again, by Salony, so you know there's a touch of class in this one! The show kicks off with Andrew peer pressuring Salony into talking about Black Doves on Netflix. It's a solid modern spy show, led by the excellent Kiera Knightley, and lacking the campiness that a lot of modern spy shows do. It's a cool take, with Kiera's character dealing with a little of that work/life balance we all hear about. Go check it out! After that, the show kicks into high gear with the intended content of the week, and the whole reason Salony showed up, Severance. The first episode of season 2 dropped this week and it's off to a great start. If you missed this show when it dropped a couple years back on Apple TV+, so watch it now! It's a very smart and trippy show with a lot to say about humanity. The gang even gets a little deep talking about it, so don't miss our convo, after you watch the show, of course! With the Severance talk over, Salony excuses herself to her night chambers, leaving the two fools to ramble on their own. Kevin starts on track with Reservation Dogs, a show that just dropped it's 3rd and final season on Hulu/FX. It's a show created, directed, staffed, and acted by a Native American crew. Technically Taika Waititi is a co-creator and he is Maori, but the sentiment is there. It's simply the story of 4 teenagers surviving modern life on a reservation. While often hilarious, it is also a superb drama that does a great job of enlightening folks of what life is really like for folks living on "the res." With all of the real content out of the way, Kevin and Andrew spend a little time waxing poetic about what is coming in entertainment this year and some hints about some cool things in the pipeline, potentially, for the podcast. So stay tuned!! As always, thank you for watching. If you haven't already, don't forget to Like & Subscribe. We love new viewers! Also, leave us comments and let is know how we are doing and what we can be doing better. Enjoy the episode and have a great week! Did we all have a lovely time? Penny and I discover we both dislike Christmas pud and mincemeat - at LAST something in common!!! Who makes there own pastry? Who has time for that?! Penny, apparently. Penny's recommendation for watching is - Black Doves - Mandy watched and agreed it was epic! Little bit throat cutty at times, so peer from behind a cushion, but SO good - Keira Knightley - she's marvellous! We talk gifts - we both got everything we wanted - Mandy got perfume (finally) and Penny did very well too. Bulb planting - yep, more good planting advice! We talk the wisdom and joy of spending time with older people - so much to love and learn! We talk about Mandy's book An Ordinary Life - Molly is 94 and has a fantastic story to tell. We take a deep dive and sudden turn into WWII - and the importance of sharing those stories and experiences, lest we forget! Including our own family experience.  We talk about our hopes for the coming year and the horror of January birthdays!!! The joy that is Snowdrops - something that heralds new beginnings. The value of close friends as get older - how lucky are we! ...we share a moment when Penny makes me howl with laughter - so what's new! And don't forget - January 11th - OUR LIVE EVENT at Weyhill near Andover - tickets from @TeaLeavesandReads save the DATE!!! She is the author of Pirates of the Chesapeake Bay: From the Colonial Era to the Oyster Wars (Charleston, SC: The History Press, 2020), National Geographic's Pirates: Shipwrecks, Conquests, and their Lasting Legacy (Washington, D.C.: National Geographic, 2021), Pirates and Privateers from Long Island Sound to Delaware Bay (Charleston, SC: The History Press, 2022), and The Daring Exploits of Black Sam Bellamy: From Cape Cod to the Caribbean (Charleston, SC: The History Press, 2023).Rebecca Simon is a historian of early modern piracy, Colonial America, the Atlantic World, and maritime history. She earned her PhD from King's College London in 2017. My dissertation, entitled: “The Crimes of Piracy and its Punishment: The Performance of Maritime Supremacy in the British Atlantic World, 1670 – 1830,” examines British maritime and legal supremacy in its early American colonies in regards to maritime piracy. She uses the public executions of pirates in London and the Americas as my narrative to see how the colonists reacted to increased legal restrictions by British authorities, which ultimately led to new ideas of autonomy.

Met with ambivalence by most, genuine revulsion by others upon its initial release in the summer of 1999, the film (and the prequel trilogy more broadly) have seen a continued reappraisal, especially in the era of so many soulless Disney-era Star Wars productions. The Phantom Menace is currently celebrating its 25th anniversary with a recent limited re-release on IMAX screens. On this episode, we make a case for the film not just as comparatively good, but a genuinely excellent entry in the Star Wars canon. We discuss the film's place within the the decade-spanning saga as well as its position within the film landscape of the era - how it pushed the boundaries of digital effects integration, and signaled (in non-alarmist terms) an evolving style of blockbuster filmmaking. Then, we talk about the film's narrative highs and lows, and share our thoughts on the critical points of 25 years of criticism: Midi-chlorians, Jar Jar Binks, Jake Lloyd, Watto and more. Finally, we praise the film's many incredible formal qualities - its relationship to Lucas's early student films visual experiements, The Phantom Menace's debt to classic cinema greats like Kurosawa and Douglas Sirk, and the brilliance of the film's multi-phase finale, cross-cutting between four different theaters of action seamlessly.Follow Neil Bahadur on Twitter and LetterboxdWatch 'The Beginning: Making Start Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace'Watch '1:42:08 To Qualify', George Lucas's 1966 short film....Our theme song is "Mirror" by Chris Fish.

People kept telling us to watch this cult classic holiday romcom. Not sure if that was because they thought we'd enjoy it or because we might have opinions on it. And oh boy, do we have opinions on this. Lest you call us long-winded, we're actually discussing two films in this two-parter, Love, Actually and Red Nose Day, Actually, the pseudo-sequel from 2017. In this first part we discuss some of the reasons this film might have enduring popularity, the clever (or lazy) writing structure Richard Curtis employs, and the Colin Firth, Billy Mack, and Kiera Knightley plots. Joel also discusses his theory that this film is secretly winking at the audience over how obvious/lazy it is at times but Naomi refuses to buy his Adam Sandler-based proof. All credit to StudioCanal for use of their poster. We strongly urge our listeners to support the work of Planned Parenthood by donating here. As we are still digesting the wildly successful Flogoween season, we thought it best that the team (Ben) put their (his) feet up and take the rest of the year off. This would allow us (Ben) to immerse ourselves (himself) in the festive season fully, spend more time listening to the many other great indie podcasts (FilmFloggers) and bask in the glory of releasing 31 Horror films during the 31 days of October. So there's only one thing left to say, Happy...12 days of Flogmas.Happy Flogmas one & all! Who's excited for the 14 days of Floggingtine? Witty Easter name pending. Festive topics discussed during the episode include:Are you looking for a new microphone? Ben elegantly reviews some. Does hearing Ben constantly whinge about his tech woes bore you? Would new listeners instantly switch off? I thought not. Is Ben still disgusting? Are we cute? Ben loses his cool. Just for a second. I'm starting to think Fiona doesn't put much effort into her episode prep. Cliff Richard pops back numerous times to mask Fiona's asthma sufferings. Ben has only nice things to say about Denise Richards. Fiona's intro tires Ben. It's been four years since my and Fiona's first conversation, and I still don't understand a word she says. The love story between Colin Firth and Sienna Guillory reminds me so much of the one between Fiona & me. Just without the love bit. Is Ameros Perros anything like City of God? It's a foreign film, so that's enough for Fiona. It's all there, Ridley Scott, House of Gucci, Jared Leto, Crash 2005. Movie stuff. Can anyone give Ben his Heathrow moment? Ben has only nice things to say about Kiera Knightley. Much like Dildo (I typed out Dildo first), Dido, will I be going down with this podcast ship? (We've been taking on water since September)Have I been hanging with Dan Machholz's too long? Has Ben lost his mojo? Yeah, baby, yeah! Boris Johnson needs to let his hair down more. Imagine facing a double denim sporting bloke with his arms folded after a full day of lectures?I knew there was a link between Helen Bonham Carter and Emma Thompson. Is Die Hard a Christmas film? Why has nobody posed this question before? What would Fiona find if she rooted around in my pocket? A sh*t-stained necklace inscribed, I heart D.M? I highly doubt it...Lobsters and Octopus standing next to our Lord and Saviour. How woke of you, Richard Curtis. Considering this came post 9/11, how realistic is Sam's airport dash for love? That thumbs-up isn't flying here, Liam Neeson. FilmFloggers Episodes - https://t.co/uHw3yuylDr?amp=1Do you want The Sopranos redefined for you? Sit down with Pirates of the Caribbean film star and 3 times World Martial Arts champion, Winston Ellis Black Spy Podcast Season 2, Episode 0008 This week's Black Spy Podcast sees the Black Spy, Carlton King, sit down with film star and 3 times World Martial Arts champion, Winston Ellis. Born to Jamaican parents in Reading Berkshire, Winston explains the frankly fascinating way he became an actor, in a time when there were very few Black actors in the UK. However, Winston would go on to star alongside Johnny Depp and Kiera Knightley in the 2nd and 3rd Pirates of the Caribbean movies as well as have parts in ‘Hollywood' movies such as: Cass, Batman the Dark Knight, Shiner, starring Michael Caine, and most recently the latest James Bond movie: 'No Time To Die'. Winston also explains how he used his martial arts skills to star in numerous Hong Kong based ‘Kung Fu' movies with such actors as Jackie Chan, Jet Li, Jean Claude Van Damme, Roger Moore, Robert Samuels and Mark Houghton. Their discussion touches on Winston's childhood in 70's and 80's England, as well as how Winston's personal journey mimics that of Carlton's in many ways, albeit Carlton's childhood was a decade earlier in the 1960's. Like Carlton, Winston battled with dyslexia, the indifference of some fellow citizens and the latent institutional racism of society and England's education system. We hear how Winston gained disciple and worked with his problems to settle down and focus on his prowess in the martial arts which culminated in him becoming a world martial arts champion, an actor, film producer and director. More recently Winston has transitioned to the small screen starring in Sky Atlantics Penny Dreadful, starring Josh Hartnett, Timothy Dalton and Eva Green. Dr Who, with Peter Capaldi, The Bill, Hustle, Judge John Deed, Dream Team, Doctors and Holby City. Winston is presently in the process of producing three movies, which will feature major international stars. Winston and Carlton also discuss the secret world, in particular Armed Governmental personal protection operations, as Carlton hears how Winston dabbled in the private protection world with some interesting characters. This episode is another must listen Black Spy Podcast, were entertainment meets, information and education. Don't miss it.

We really wanted to go the month without reviewing any holiday horror movies. We love them as much as the next person, but we just felt like going in a different direction. In lieu of an actual review, we talk about some of our favorite Christmas horror movies. Some of the are obvious while others will catch you off guard. We also talk about an underrated thriller that takes place in chilly conditions.A few months back we talked about The Green Knight and were decidedly split on how we felt. Now that the movie is getting a Christmas re-release, we revisit what we thought. You will be surprised to find what we now think. We also wonder if people will ever stop talking about Die Hard and its connection to Christmas. We also talk about Steven Spielberg's upcoming remake of West Side Story and his decision to have no subtitles for the Spanish speaking parts. It is the second spookiest time of year! We talk about the holiday horror movies you should see. Kiera Knightley, fever dreams, and childhood classics all crop up. We also discuss why Jack Frost is a better holiday horror movie than Thankskilling. And, more Die Hard?Frozen is a 2010 thriller that keeps things simple. The story is about a trio of friends who get caught on a ski lift and have to battle the elements in order to describe. Obviously, this type of movie will take a lot of realism to succeed, but why did they make it feel like it was from another decade? Plus, we talk about relatable characters that are little annoying and very dumb.Adventures in Movies! is a part of the Morbidly Beautiful Podcast Network. How they built miniatures and the the inside of a spitfire to create the look they wanted . How when they had problems the answers were always 'make it simple'. And how to use the budget in the best way you can to light the scene. We chat how they raised the investment money to make the film through any which way they could. How the budget limited then but also made them think out of the box. How it is important that all filmmakers have to step up to be a film business and make the film to sell and how you can actually make money . We chat with Kris about his acting thoughts and how It took four years to make the film and over that time they built up the fan base on social media and held open days to bring people into and believing in the project  And we find out that Callum has to redo all the sound with ADR and did the sound Foley in his bedroom which as you can imagine took forever Lancaster Skies trailer here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?time_continue=4&v=VmMqZdO4ugw WATCH full movie of Lancaster Skies here https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/video/detail/B07R878Y3S/ Follow the team on twitter @LancasterSkies here: http://www.twitter.com/lancasterskies LINKS MAKE YOUR FILM returns with hosts Giles Alderson and Dom Lenoir for a fourth installment after three incredible past events. Get tickets for the latest MAKE YOUR FILM event on July 9th here: bit.ly/2Zjma3s This week Giles Alderson (The Dare, World of Darkness) is joined by screenwriter and director Stephanie McBain who talks about her journey into making her debut feature Roads, Trees and Honey Bees and how she raised the money on credit and worked two jobs while doing it. We chat with the inspiring Stephanie about how she started off acting and moved to directing after switching courses and having to prep but not make a short as part of her course but after a chance conversation how her friend said she would produce it for her and she went out and actually made it. We chat about how she writes about what she knows and her process behind it and how that led on to wanting to make her debut feature without waiting for something to happen. So she sacrificed nights out and worked two jobs while earning enough money to get it made and how it was so hard to write it after coming home from work We talk casting and what should an actor do in a casting and why you might get cast or not . How the first day on set was embarrassing. How an actor pulled out the day before and only filmed 5/8ths of a page on that first day We talk how having a mentor is so important in the film business and how she got distribution for the film and got it out for people to see. And how she has made her second feature A Kiss on Candy Kane Lane on two weeks notice and even worked her job during the filming the schedule. Giles Alderson (The Dare, World of Darkness) sits down with director, writer and producer Tom Paton to chat how he made his films, Pandorica, Redwood, Black Site, Stairs and G-Loc and how important it is to have a business head on as a filmmaker. Ep Sponsored by The Tracking Board https://www.tracking-board.com/ Tickets for the latest MAKE YOUR FILM event on July 9th here: bit.ly/2Zjma3s On the podcast this week we chat with Tom Paton about how he went from a Club Rep in Cyprus to becoming a Filmmaker and how he started with no real knowledge of cameras or production. How he self taught himself film-making and learnt to edit and understand VFX and graphics because he has no choice. How he didn't want to make a short but a feature first and how he raised finance using his background in selling to secure investment . for his first feature - Pandorica, shot at night in outdoor locations - high sensitivity camera used, in combination with DIY space lights to shoot a post-apocalyptic forest setting. How he pushed on after his first feature onto his second feature - Redwood, which was a bigger budget, vampire film set in eastern Europe and the lessons he learnt from first feature he carried over to second feature. His third film Black Site, out later this year, is a back to his roots, lower budget, exploitation John Carpenter-esque horror thriller. We discuss what actors look for in a director - and vice versa and producing your own work - and find good collaborators. We discuss his fourth film - Stairs and his 5th feature G-Lock which are both now in post And we delve into his screenwriting process - from script to shoot PLUS loads of advice for filmmakers new and old Black Site TRAILER https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A3paRCrafmU Tom Paton WEBSITE https://www.tompatonfilm.com/ Follow Tom on TWITTER here https://twitter.com/TomPatonFilm LINKS MAKE YOUR FILM returns with hosts Giles Alderson and Dom Lenoir for a fourth installment after three incredible past events.
