POPULARITY
In this episode of All Things Endurance, host Rick Prince chats with environmental and exercise physiologist, Mike Weiss of Alta Health and Performance Solutions (www.altahps.com). Specifically, Mike discusses what the most popular physiological tests are, as well as how to interpret and apply the results. About Mike Weiss Mike Weiss is an environmental and exercise physiologist who owns his own practice – Alta Health and Performance Solutions in northern California. Mike is also an endurance athlete who focuses on ultrarunning. Areas covered in this podcast: 1. What is your background and how did you get into physiological testing?2. Physiological testing is becoming more popular, in part due to the interest in the ‘Norwegian Method.' However, in your own summation, why is testing important?3. Ideally, when and at what intervals should an athlete get tested throughout a year?4. For endurance athletes, the two most popular main physiological tests are VO2 Max and lactate. Could you explain a bit about each test, why they are important and how they correlate to each other?5. What are some limitations with respect to VO2 Max testing (i.e., muscular fatigue, etc…)?6. If a person doesn't have access to a lab, what are some field tests that they can perform to approximate lactate threshold and VO2 Max?7. From the perspective of implementing training intensities, or for lack of a better word, training zones, could you explain how to apply the results of a VO2 Max and Lactate threshold test?8. What can an individual expect to pay for a VO2 Max and Lactate Threshold test? Are there any individuals where a VO2 max test would be contraindicated?

Hello! This is episode 290, and in it, I'm continuing my conversation with Building Surveyor, Laura Terrnova, from Deemed to Perform Consulting. We're discussing Performance Solutions: what they are, and how they'll impact your project and approvals. This episode is part of a special series on the National Construction Code, and NCC 2022. [For all resources mentioned in this podcast and a free, downloadable PDF transcript, head to www.undercoverarchitect.com/290] If you haven't listened to Part 1 of my conversation with Laura in Episode 289, be sure to do that first, as this one will make a lot more sense once you do. You can find that by heading to www.undercoverarchitect.com/289 In this episode, we jump into the detail of Performance Solutions. Laura helps us understand more about what they mean, what might trigger the need for them, how you'll need to go about acquiring them, and who will need to be involved. For anyone doing a custom project, it may be very difficult to do a fully Deemed to Satisfy approval process. And you may also seriously limit your design, material and construction options if you insist on following a fully Deemed to Satisfy pathway. So, understanding Performance Solutions will be super helpful for you to demystify what they are, and how to shape your project and project team to accommodate them. Hello! This is episode 289, and in it, I'm talking with Building Surveyor, Laura Terrnova, Director of Deemed to Perform Consulting about project compliance, building approvals and updates to the National Construction Code. This episode is part of a special series on the National Construction Code, and NCC 2022. [For all resources mentioned in this podcast and a free, downloadable PDF transcript, head to www.undercoverarchitect.com/289] Laura is a consultative Building Surveyor. What does this mean? Well, you'll hear more from Laura about this, but in short, Laura's role on projects is to help homeowners navigate their building approvals more confidently and efficiently by understanding how their design and construction choices will impact their compliance with the National Construction Code. Building Surveyor is a Victorian term. In other locations, this role can be known as a Building Certifier. In this episode, Laura will share what you need to know about this role, about achieving your building approvals, and especially how the latest updates to the National Construction Code need to be understood in the context of your project. And in the next episode, Laura will step us through the process of achieving Performance Solutions, something that will become more and more important to understand in building approval processes for projects. Laura is Victorian based, but what she shares is applicable throughout Australia, and we try to generalise the terminology where possible. This is super helpful information from someone who is helping homeowners navigate this every day in the role she performs on projects, and who has really had to dive into the weeds of the National Construction Code updates as well! “Innovation isn't about what we know; and defining it would be challenging everything we know,” says Ben Williams.“One thing I do believe is: to harvest a culture of innovation we need human engagement and we need collaboration.”Williams, who serves as the Ineos Grenadiers cycling team's Integrated Performance Lead and the Ineos Britannia sailing team's Head of Human Performance, is our very special guest on this Science in Sport Industry Insight Series podcast. He sat down with SiS Director of Performance Solutions, James Morton, to discuss his varied professional background and the approach to innovation he has cultivated in each of his roles in sport and beyond. Also on the conversational agenda were:The need to normalise ‘silly' questions inside your organisation [12:30];Why the America's Cup could be sport's most unique performance challenge [15:00];His transition into cycling (combining his work in sailing) [19:00];Whether the next gains will be made in ‘training science' or ‘equipment science' [23:30]. In this episode, we focus on better ways to cultivate, attract and engage talent. Listen too, as we share how to identify “superpowers” within your employees. Plus we'll talk about ways managers can support the mental wellbeing of their reports. Bill's guest this time is Patricia Carl, CEO & Founder of Highland Performance Solutions, a woman-owned organizational consulting firm that partners with Fortune 500 and start-up companiesQuestions Include:How can we start to build a more aligned company culture? We have seen a major shift in how companies attract, retain and support employees due to the pandemic and the Great Resignation. What do you think is not working anymore to cultivate, attract and engage talent and what should companies be really focusing on today? You say that the Pareto Principle (80/20 rule) teaches us that 20% of employees drive 80% of the results. This 20% is your high performers - the team members who take on nearly any challenge and find a way to be successful. Why it is critical for leaders to cultivate and support these superstars? You talk about a critical leadership element is how to identify “superpowers” within your employees; unique talents that a person has but is not in a job description or part of their role. What do you mean by this and how can leaders go about enabling employees to uncover and leverage these superpowers in their role? You are passionate about companies and leaders embracing the intersection of mental wellness and the workplace. As a former therapist early in your career, and leading HR organizations as the CHRO, what is critical for leaders to understand and lean into when it comes to employee mental wellness? What doesn't work from your experience?
“You've got to listen to these young people,” says Rod Ellingworth.“A lot of experienced people have been through life but they're not perhaps listening to these young people enough. You've got to listen to their ambitions and, when they say things, there's a lot in there. And if you ask the right questions, open questions, getting into the guts of it really, really getting under their skin about how they want to go from A to B, I think you can learn a lot from people. “Try to follow people's ambitions and dreams. And as long as you've got the programme and the space, you can keep working with people, because the talent will come through.”Ellingworth is a former cyclist who now oversees talent identification at the Ineos Grenadiers and, in this latest edition of the Science in Sport Industry Insight series, he sits down in conversation with his former colleague James Morton, the Director of Performance Solutions at SiS.Both men spent five year working together under Ineos' previous guise, Team Sky, and here they delve into advice for talent spotters as well as:Why it is important to ‘throw grenades' at young riders when it comes to developing their resilience [14:00];Geraint Thomas' champion mindset [16:00];The importance of creating programmes that excite youngsters [18:30];Misconceptions around fuelling and weight loss [26:30]James Morton LinkedIn | TwitterJohn Portch: Twitter | LinkedInListen above and subscribe today on iTunes, Spotify, Stitcher and Overcast, or your chosen podcast platform.
Former middle-distance runner Pippa Woolven was not aware that she was suffering from RED-S – relative energy deficiency in sport – until well afterwards such was the lack of general understanding of the condition at the time.“It took several years to recover and the scars of that experience will forever remain,” she tells the Leaders Performance Podcast of her experiences of RED-S while competing in the US college system in the 2010s.“I'm lucky enough to say I'm in a healthy place now and I hope to help other people avoid the same pitfalls.”Woolven is the Founder, CEO and Director of Project RED-S, an initiative formed by a group of athletes, parents and partners whose lives had been impacted by a condition that is still relatively unknown and misunderstood.Joining the conversation was James Morton, the Director of Performance Solutions at Science in Sport, who was part of a research project that revealed some time ago that just one in 23 of England's Lionesses squad were consuming the correct quantities of carbohydrate. The duo discuss the reasons why athletes succumb to RED-S and the ways in which the condition can be both treated and prevented. They also touch upon:The causes of low energy availability [7:00];Team culture and the role of coaches in preventing RED-S [16:00];The role of parents in educating young athletes [24:00];How athletes can support team-mates in their fuelling [27:30]. ¿A quien debo preguntar? - Sports Injury Prevention and Rehabilitation: Integrating Medicine and Science for Performance Solutions. David Joyce and Lewindon. - Todo se puede entrenar. Toni Nadal. - Lo mejor de ir es volver. This podcast interview focuses on product innovation to build high-performing teams and bring out the very best in people. My guest is Stephen Lowisz. Stephen M. Lowisz is a Fortune 500 consultant, serial entrepreneur, keynote speaker and coach who generated his first $1 million in revenue at 19. As the Director of Performance Solutions at Qualigence, he uses his expertise to grow and scale technology companies around the globe. Qualigence combines the people analytics technology with consulting to optimize talent at leading organizations. The aim: build high-performing team. He’s an official member of the Forbes Business Development and Sales council.I got intrigued by the approach Qualigence takes to talent optimization and scaling – hence I invited Stephen to my podcast. We explore what’s broken in the process of hiring people, why there’s an 80% chance of getting it wrong, and what needs to change in order to get it right, while optimizing the performance of the workforce you already have.. Here are some of his quotes:At Qualigence as a whole, historically was a talent acquisition consulting shop. We've been hiring and helping people build out their teams for 20 years. Now what? How do we reduce churn? How do we get the best out of the people that we're bringing on board? How do we optimize the team and make sure everyone is performing to the best of their ability, just like we expect from our technology? So the main problem is, think about when you buy Salesforce. You're going to optimize it until it's perfect for your business objectives,You're going to customize the hell out of it. You're going to have a whole lot of fun doing so.But when we go hire people, we put I'm on the shelf and we do nothing.During this interview, you will learn three things:Why technology should not be focused on getting the most out of people, but instead getting the best out of them. How we can create exponential impact by combining the three T’s: Tactics, Talent and TechnologyWhy CEO’s need a mindset change around what drives growth. My first guest on this episode, is Caroline Jean-Baptiste, from Mortgage Choice Fortitude Valley (Brisbane), QLD. And my second guest is Peta Charles, from Brisbane Town Planning, QLD. And be sure to get in touch with Caroline and Peta to let them know you heard them on Undercover Architect, and to thank them for all they share!! In her full interview, Peta also shares information on ... why architects and designers may not be the best professional to prepare your town planning application what to do if council says ‘no’ to your application to improve your chances of getting your project through things to know about the Traditional Character Overlay in Brisbane City Council Acceptable Solutions vs Performance Solutions, and why do they matter to your approval Head to https://undercoverarchitect.com/courses/how-to-get-it-right/ to learn more about “How to Get it Right in Your Reno or New Home”. Hello, and WELCOME to the Bare Bones Yoga Podcast: Conversations for Yoga Teachers! I’m your host, Karen Fabian and this is EPISODE 15. Today I’m bringing you PART TWO of my last interview with Movement Coach and Manual Therapist, Josh Landis, who works out in Denver at Denver Pain and Performance Solutions and is the Founder of Landis Movement Systems. My last podcast, #14, with Josh was super popular and people had some really great feedback as to what they learned from listening. In that episode, Josh and I started a conversation about different topics similar to both yoga teaching and personal training. We covered topics like giving effective cues, different teaching techniques and the concept of muscle compensation. Since we didn’t get to all the questions, we thought it would be helpful to pick up where we left off so that’s what we’re going to do today! Remember, in order to find Josh online, check out his site at: www.landismovementsystems.com Also, at the end of this episode, since we talk so much about sequencing, I offer you my free sequencing template, which you can get here: https://barebonesyoga.lpages.co/how-to-build-a-yoga-sequence-lead-page/ Once you’re done listening, please leave a comment! We’d love to know what you think!

Nutrition is always a hot topic with runners, and today’s guest, Trent Stellingwerff brings a wealth of knowledge and extensive research into how nutrition affects our physiology. Trent and I cover a wide range of topics that touch on more than just nutrition, from the notion that trying to do 5 or 6 things really well is simply impossible and leads to doing nothing well and his focus on health, mobility and wellness over an entire lifetime. We cover whether there is really one way to eat that is better than any other, and how dietary choices are dependent on one’s individual history, training loads, and a continuum of macro and micro nutrients. You will also learn why a simple focus on what and how much you eat for breakfast is probably the most important food choice you can make to help your performance and overall health. For you listening that are not simply runners but also are perhaps doing Triathlons, Trent works with a wide variety of athletes from runners to rowers, cyclists, swimmers etc. Our discussions covers the different training loads in terms of hours of training and how those impact the nutritional needs and focus for athletes of all types. Today’s Guest Trent Stellingwerff Trent Stellingwerff is an applied sport physiologist with a specialization in the area of performance nutrition. He earned a Bachelor of Science in Human Nutrition and Exercise Physiology at Cornell University and he earned his Ph.D. from the University of Guelph in Exercise and Skeletal Muscle Physiology. He is currently the Director of Performance Solutions at the Canadian Sports Institute, with a focus on providing his physiology and nutrition expertise to Canada’s national rowing, track and field and triathlon teams. He also heads the Canadian Sport Institute’s Innovation and Research division. Trent previously worked as the senior leading scientist in Performance Nutrition for Power Bar at the Nestle Research Center in Lausanne, Switzerland. Trent ran middle distances in his collegiate career for Cornell until he was sidelined by injury. Trent’s lives with his wife Hilary, a two time Olympian, and their children in Victoria, Canada. What you will learn about: How just a focus on breakfast can make a huge difference in our overall health and performance. How accurately measuring energy input and output is like trying to measure rain in a hurricane. Both are fraught with over and under-reporting. How it is important to understand the calorie and nutritional breakdown of what you are eating but not stress over the number of calories as it is less important than the overall balance of what is in each item. How runners tend to be picker about what they eat but can quickly get into trouble by not fueling enough to support the pounding their bodies endure. How the pounding forces and upright posture of running impacts the GI system and leads to somewhat unique issues related to digestion and fueling. How athletes in the hotbed of distance running (Kenya and Ethiopia) are eating pretty close to the land. Their dinner probably just walked by them a few moments ago. How the pounding forces and upright posture of running impacts the GI system and leads to somewhat unique issues related to digestion and fueling.
