Two planes hijacked by Al Qaeda pierced the north and south towers of the World Trade Center. A third slammed into the Pentagon in Arlington, Va. A fourth crashed in an open field outside Shanksville, Pa. All in less than 90 minutes. What, exactly, do you remember? What stories do you tell when a casual conversation morphs into a therapy session? What stories do you keep to yourself? And what instantly transports you back to that deceptively sunny Tuesday morning? In a study of more than 3,000 people, what distinguished the memories of Sept. 11, when compared with ordinary autobiographical memories, was the extreme confidence that people had developed in their altered remembrances.Dan Barry, a longtime Times reporter, remembered “the acrid smell of loss drifting uptown through the newsroom's open windows. The landfill. The funerals.” Today, he shares an essay about the effects of time on those memories. This story was written and narrated by Dan Barry. This episode examines the two major economic paradigms of Laissez Faire capitalism on the one hand and the command economy on the other typified by the early communist experiments in Russia and China. It will point to the dangers of extreme Laissez Faire capitalism and also to the central reasons why a communist command cannot work. It will also explore the decline of religion and spirituality under both these systems.

Are we ever living in the end time. Tomorrow is the 20th anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks in New York, Washington, and Pennsylvania. Some believe WWIII started on 9-11 when we began the war on terrorism. According to God's prophetic timeclock, it is time for WWIII and Islam will certainly be involved. TRANSCRIPT OF AUDIO From the Cumberland Gap to the Atlantic Ocean, this is Virginia Water Radio for the week of September 13, 2021.  This revised episode from December 2018 is part of a series this fall of episodes on water connections to the human body and human biology. MUSIC – ~ 15 sec – Lyrics:  “Well you're nothing but a pack of neurons, in a shapely bag of goo.  All your thoughts and dreams, your hopes and schemes, are electrochemical, too.”This week, that music sets the stage for describing some biochemical and electro-chemical aspects of the water-based environment inside of us.  Have a listen for about 45 more seconds. MUSIC – ~47 sec – Lyrics: “Well the first time I ever saw your face, dear, my ions began to diffuse.  Your eyes aglow made the sodium flow through those membrane avenues.  When our fingers unite, more than synapses excite, and those lips I can't refuse.  I know we're more than just a chemical reaction, ‘cause I'm in love with you-oo-oo, I'm in love with you.  Well you're nothing but a pack of neurons, controlling a bag of goo.  All your thoughts and dreams, your hopes and schemes, are electrochemical, too.  You are what you eat, ‘cept for what you excrete, so watch out what you chew.  You're nothing but a pack of neurons, and I'm in love with you-oo-oo, I'm in love with you.  This is the part where the sodium and potassium ions do a little soft-shoe.”You've been listening to part of “Pack of Neurons,” by Bob Gramann of Fredericksburg, Va., on his 2008 album, “Mostly Live.”  According to Mr. Gramann, the title “Pack of Neurons” was inspired by the use of that phrase in The Astonishing Hypothesis, a 1994 book by Francis Crick on human consciousness.   Dr. Crick shared the 1962 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine with James Watson and Maurice Wilkins for their discoveries of the structure of the DNA molecule. Mr. Gramann's song is a light-hearted look at the fundamental role of neurons, of nerve cells, in transmitting the electrical impulses that control humans' mental and physical processes.  Those nerve impulses are transmitted along neurons by changes in the concentration of electrically-charged atoms of sodium and potassium. [Note, not in audio: Neurons are the type of nerve cell that transmits impulses.  The nervous system also has other supporting cells.]  Water is vital as the solvent for those charged atoms, known as ions.  And not just in neurons, but in all biological cells, a water-based solution is the medium in which biochemical substances exist and react.  Regarding water-based solutions, chemist Linus Pauling in 1970 wrote, “One of the most striking properties of water is its ability to dissolve many substances”—including, we might add, ions transmitting the nerve impulses that right now are allowing you to hear or read these words. Thanks to Bob Gramann for permission to use this week's music, and we close with about 20 more seconds of “Pack of Neurons.” MUSIC – ~21 sec - Instrumental SHIP'S BELL Virginia Water Radio is produced by the Virginia Water Resources Research Center, part of Virginia Tech's College of Natural Resources and Environment.  For more Virginia water sounds, music, or information, visit us online at virginiawaterradio.org, or call the Water Center at (540) 231-5624.  Thanks to Stewart Scales for his banjo version of Cripple Creek to open and close this show.  In Blacksburg, I'm Alan Raflo, thanking you for listening, and wishing you health, wisdom, and good water. EXTRA INFORMATION ABOUT THE HUMAN NERVOUS SYSTEM The following information is quoted from National Institutes of Health/National Cancer Institute, “SEER Training Modules: Review: Introduction to the Nervous System,” online at https://training.seer.cancer.gov/anatomy/nervous/review.html, accessed 9/10/21. *The nervous system is the major controlling, regulatory, and communicating system in the body. It is the center of all mental activity including thought, learning, and memory. *The various activities of the nervous system can be grouped together as three general, overlapping functions: sensory, integrative, and motor. *Neurons are the nerve cells that transmit impulses.  Supporting cells are neuroglia. *The three components of a neuron are a cell body or soma, one or more afferent processes called dendrites, and a single efferent process called an axon. *The central nervous system consists of the brain and spinal cord.  Cranial nerves, spinal nerves, and ganglia make up the peripheral nervous system. *The afferent division of the peripheral nervous system carries impulses to the CNS; the efferent division carries impulses away from the CNS. *There are three layers of meninges around the brain and spinal cord.  The outer layer is dura mater, the middle layer is arachnoid, and the innermost layer is pia mater. *The spinal cord functions as a conduction pathway and as a reflex center.  Sensory impulses travel to the brain on ascending tracts in the cord. Motor impulses travel on descending tracts. SOURCES Used for Audio Stewart W. The novelist Brandon Taylor, who has generated his own buzz with his debut novel, “Real Life,” and a collection of stories, “Filthy Animals,” visits the podcast to discuss the much-discussed work of Sally Rooney. Taylor recently reviewed her third novel, “Beautiful World, Where Are You.” On the podcast, he describes Rooney's writing as an “intense, melancholic tractor beam.”“She has this really great, tactile metaphorical sense, but it's never overworked,” he says. “Her style is so clean. That is the word I come to most often in describing her style. It is so clean, so pristine.” Like her two previous books, this one is fueled by the vexations of intimate relationships. “Ultimately, if you're a Sally Rooney fan, I think you'll love this novel,” Taylor says. “And if you're a Sally Rooney skeptic, I think she will acknowledge your concerns but maybe not answer them in full.”Another Rooney, David Rooney, visits the podcast to discuss his new book, “About Time: A History of Civilization in Twelve Clocks.”“There's something about clocks and watches,” he says.” They have more meaning to many people than other artifacts. I wasn't quite sure why. I was trying to get behind the faces of clocks and watches, to understand not so much how they work — although that's fascinating — but what they mean, and what they've always meant, through history, across cultures.”Also on this week's episode, Tina Jordan looks back at Book Review history as it celebrates its 125th anniversary; Alexandra Alter has news from the publishing world; and Jennifer Szalai and John Williams talk about books that have been recently reviewed. Pamela Paul is the host. Here are the books discussed by the Times's critics this week:“The Failed Promise” by Robert S. Levine“The War for Gloria” by Atticus Lish“The Magician” by Colm Toibin

Becoming Better by Shifting Your Mindset and Taking Control of Your Life with Bricia Lopez Growing up, our parents tell us what to do and what not to do. Thus, even as we grow into our unique selves, we still feel restricted in doing and pursuing what we want. We base our decisions as adults on the things we learned and heard growing up. But becoming better  does not happen this way. You should shift your mindset and start taking control of your life. That's when freedom, contentment, and fulfillment come in. In this episode, Bricia Lopez talks about the most valuable lessons she learned from motherhood and running a family business. She shares the experience of being pregnant and giving birth during the pandemic, along with navigating the new normal as an entrepreneur. Bricia also lets us take a peek at what it's like working with her family in their business. She discusses how understanding you're in control is crucial in decision-making and becoming better as a person. If you're stuck in a mindset that keeps you from moving forward, then this episode is for you! Here are three reasons why you should listen to the full episode: Discover how motherhood pushed Bricia to become a better person. Find out what generational wealth is and what it does for families. Learn how resilience pushes you to move forward no matter the adversities. Resources Connect with Bricia: Instagram | Twitter | LinkedIn | Facebook. Episode Highlights How Bricia Handled the Pandemic She was 20 weeks pregnant in March last year and gave birth in July. The experience of carrying her baby through the pandemic was grounding for Bricia. The pandemic put things into perspective. At the end of the day, it's all about taking care of her children. Because she was high-risk, she had to stay home and let her team manage her restaurant. Becoming Better for Her Children For Bricia, giving birth to a girl was a completely different experience from giving birth to a boy. After she gave birth to her baby girl, felt the urge of becoming better. She took care of her body during the first few weeks after her pregnancy and dropped her bad habits. Bricia admits that she did not take care of her body after giving birth to her firstborn. This time around, becoming better at this aspect of motherhood was her priority. Being pregnant during the pandemic made it easier for Bricia to slow down. Navigating the New Normal Bricia is now back to the grind 100%. She has someone who helps take care of her daughter. Despite being busy again, she feels at peace because she loves what she does. She doesn't feel guilty leaving her daughter behind because she got to spend so much time with her one-on-one. With the economy opening up, it feels like the roaring 20s again for businesses. Guelaguetza Restaurant Their website is now called ilovemole.com. It's easier to remember than the previous guelaguetza.com. The restaurant is in Koreatown in Los Angeles. They specialize in Oaxacan cooking. Building Generational Wealth Bricia loves working with her family. She runs the family business with her brother and sister. They're building something that will last for the next generation. They are also becoming better at handling their finances than their parents. For Bricia, generational wealth allows you to be in control of your time. As a result, you can be more creative. You are also more at peace and present. By building generational wealth, she is allowing her children to explore what they want without having to worry about money. Mental Graduation We are continuously graduate mentally to another state of mind. We go through mental high school and mental college. Then, we get to the place where we open doors to new dimensions of financial knowledge. Becoming better means you have to keep learning. It's important to remember that age doesn't define your capacity to learn new things. Taking Chances Bricia didn't realize how big of a hold her parents had on her life until they retired. She always wanted to be a graphic designer, but her father was against it. Bricia wished she didn't listen and just went for it. She realized she could do anything when her parents retired and moved away. She and her siblings bought the restaurant from their parents and took over. Making a decision and following through it is the hardest skill to learn and lean on. No one has control of your life but you. Understanding this will make you realize that you can do anything you want. How Resilience Impacted Bricia's Decision-Making Adversities will always happen in life and business; it's the way the world works. You can decide to stop and backtrack, or you can stop, learn, and move forward. Once you understand why something happened, you'll realize it's not that big of a deal and develop a new perspective. Opportunities come when you're not scared. You keep becoming better as you face and deal with issues and adversities. Becoming better at self-compassion is one of the hardest things to learn in life. Yet, it's one of the most useful tools you can have. The Most Important Value Bricia Wants Her Children to Have For Bricia, it's confidence. If you're innately confident, you can make anything happen no matter what the world tells you. Innate confidence is different from given confidence or fake confidence that makes a person delusional. Instead of giving her son fake confidence, she builds his self-esteem by letting him fail, explore, and do things for himself. How Bricia Feels Radically Love Working in the hospitality industry, her life revolves around serving people. And so, Bricia feels radically loved when people listen to her and give their time, compassion, and energy without taking. 5 Powerful Quotes from This Episode [06:14] “I just need to become a better woman. I need to become even a better version of me for [my daughter].” [15:16] “Generational wealth means having more control of your time, without the stress of other things.” [18:51] “No one's too old to learn anything.” [22:37] “Getting used to the fact that making a decision and following through that decision is probably the hardest skill to learn and lean on.” [29:27] “[Confidence is] something that you have to innately understand. They have to fail and then learn that they can do it themselves.” About Bricia Bricia Lopez is a restaurant owner, entrepreneur, and best-selling author. She is the co-owner of an Oaxacan restaurant, Guelaguetza. Additionally, Bricia is a co-founder of Mole and More, together with her siblings. They sell proprietary cocktail mix, I Love Micheladas, and mole paste. Beyond this, Bricia is also the co-founder and co-host of the Super Mamás Podcast. As one of the foremost proponents of Oaxacan culture and cuisine in the United States, Bricia is the author of the best-selling cookbook, Oaxaca. In 2015, the James Beard Award Foundation awarded her restaurant the American Classics award. The L.A. Times also granted her the Latinos de Hoy Cultural Ambassador Award. Bricia has been featured in various publications, including The L.A. Times, Forbes, The New Yorker, and GQ Magazine. When 28-year-old bar manager Kitty Genovese was stabbed to death in New York in 1964, she was just one of the 636 murder victims in the city that year. No more than four paragraphs were written about her death in the newspaper. That all changed after The Times published a front-page article two weeks later, stating that 38 witnesses had seen Kitty's brutal attack taking place and did absolutely nothing. National outrage was sparked. Eventually, Kitty Genovese's murder took its place as one of the most famous ones in modern American history. Increasingly, it seems to be that we're losing much of the common sense that we, collectively, once possessed. Common sense has been replaced with quick sounds bites, “clapbacks” on social media, and manufactured outraged designed to drive clicks and capture eyeballs and attention.   But my guest today is using his voice, social media, and any other platform available to share his common sense, rational approach to some of the world's most pressing concerns. His name is Zuby and I know many of you are already very familiar with his work. Today, we talk about the dangers of tribalism, the motives and intentions of our government overlords and elites, how to have real conversations that actually drive change, why empathy is crucial in dialogue, and how to recapture common sense in uncommon times.   SHOW HIGHLIGHTS:   You can only do so much thinking by yourself There are three ways to solve any conflict Effective communication is a super power We're all susceptible to group think What it means to live in a free society Fear and anxiety shuts down rational thinking The importance of understanding the perspectives of other people Focus the conversation on where we agree, rather than disagree Don't fall for media propaganda The bias is often hidden in what people “don't” say Being wrong is different than lying Everybody is a moral monster to someone else   Want maximum health, wealth, relationships, and abundance in your life?
