One of my favorite conversations to have on the show are those that amplify incredible stories of recovery and hope. Jen Cutting has one of the wildest and most inspirational stories I have ever come across. Today Jen has been sober for nearly 4 years, is a recovery warrior, and works closely with the prison system to help other women.   This would have seemed nearly impossible not long ago as Jen has been incarcerated multiple times for drug-fueled felony charges. In fact, she even had and raised her daughter while she was in prison.   Today she will walk you through her shocking and moving journey that is filled with many highs and many lows.    Jen grew up in Staten Island and like many, was raised in a very financially stable home with two parents. But, she found herself being smothered by their protection and control and began to question her self worth.   Shortly after high school she met a man that was nearly 10 years older than her and that relationship gave her a taste of what manipulation, addiction and artificial love felt like.   After breaking it off with him, she used his credit card to buy a plane ticket and move to Florida where she quickly got a job as an exotic dancer at a local strip club. On her 21st birthday she was introduced to cocaine, and that's where things took a turn for the worst, as it quickly turned into a lifestyle. It got so bad, that she moved back to Staten Island before her 22nd birthday.   While she thought it could be a catalyst to help her get her life back together it actually had the opposite effect. She met another man, began to strip at another local club and was prescribed Vicodin after an injury. Jen was prescribed Vicodin for months and months after her initial script and found herself in the depths of opiate addiction. After her doctor left, she was forced to get her fix illegally. So, she found men at the club who could get her pills and eventually this lead to her trying and shooting heroin.   The debauchery continued and her and her then boyfriend were caught stealing to support their heroin habit. She was arrested on a grand larceny charge and sentenced to time in prison. She does her time, gets out and begins right back where she left off. She catches yet another grand larceny charge and ends up in a diversion program where she was able to kick the opiate addiction for good. Shortly after her release, she fell in love with another convicted felon and became pregnant.   After violating her parole, she found herself back in prison again but this time facing a much more challenging stint as she was pregnant and her due date was during her incarceration. Not only does she successfully have her daughter, but she was also able to properly raise her with the help of other inmates and the prison's nursery program.   You would think that after all of this, Jen would finally throw in the towel. Well, she didn't. She was arrested for selling meth and found herself incarcerated once again. To make things even worse, she lost custody of her daughter.    Today, she has full custody, has been sober for nearly 4 years, and is giving back by helping others in recovery and in the prison system. She is here to tell you the story of how this all happened and more.    Connect with Jen:   Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/jlcutting/   YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/c/jencutting   TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@jencutting1   Connect with Doug: Instagram: www.instagram.com Twitter: www.twitter.com/dougbopst Facebook: www.facebook.com/dougbopst   Join Marisa Peer's 21-day abundance challenge by clicking here:   www.marisapeer.com/DOUG   Use promo code “Doug” at checkout to receive 25% off.

The reality of the matter is that this type of action and thinking benefits you. Acting with courage benefits you. Thinking with courage benefits you.The people who live a life of courage grab the opportunities that come their way. The people who live a life of courage chase down their dreams and they get what they want from life. They are capable of building the life they have always dreamed of because they don’t let fear stand in their way. Nelson Mandela said, “I learned that courage was not the absence of fear, but the triumph over it.” The courageous stand against injustice, whether it’s a threat against them, someone they care about or, someone in need. The courageous are willing to take actions that consistently align with their values. That action isn’t always loud or in your face, sometimes it’s thoughtful, subtle, and quiet. As Winston Churchill said, “Courage is what it takes to stand up and speak; courage is also what it takes to sit down and listen “ Today Jen takes us on a journey discover what courage is and how to actually face fear in a responsible and empowering way. In today’s episode, I’m joined by Jen Underwood. Jen is a storyteller, a magician of words, and a connector of humans.  She does individual and group coaching with people who are ready to face the places they are stuck or avoiding action and fight for the life of their dreams. As Jen says, being stuck sucks. And she loves working to support people with living a life filled with purpose, happiness, and courageous vulnerability.  Jen has a Masters in Clinical Counseling and likes to combine her psychology and teaching backgrounds with real life experience, mixing emotional intelligence, strategy, and goal-setting with all her clients and programs.  In addition to her work as a coach, Jen has written for The Washington Post, The Mission, P.S. I Love You, Becoming You, and Elephant Journal.  Today Jen and I talk about how to feel your negative emotions so that you can actually heal from them, and the specific tools you can use to get unstuck effect real positive change in your life. We also talk about: How Jen and I met and how we’ve both grown since then How most people have at least one area of their life — and many of us have more than one — where we feel stuck . . . and what to do about it How Jen transitioned from being a poor single mom to social work to starting her own business How she went from awareness to action as she worked to change her life The value of talk therapy for bringing awareness to your behaviors — and why that’s not enough Why she sold everything she owned and moved into a van with her daughter How she discovered that she could do the work that she wanted to do in the world — and now, how she’s doing it . . . and so much more! Jen is such an incredible teacher and student and friend, and I think you got to see all of that in this episode.  I hope you enjoy our conversation as much as I did! — Follow Jen: Website Facebook Instagram Other Notable Links: COR Workshops   CREDITS Editing & Sound Engineering: Jordan Johansen Music: “Kenton” by Dr Crosby (Licensed via Marmoset)

Each chapter of 3 Books uncovers and discusses the three most formative books from one of the world's most inspiring people. Sample guests include: Judy Blume, David Sedaris, Chris Anderson of TED, and the world's greatest Uber driver. Each of the 333 chapters is dropped on the exact minute of every new moon and full moon until September 1, 2031. 3 Books is an Apple "Best Of" award-winning show as well as the world's only podcast by and for book lovers, writers, makers, sellers... and librarians. For more info check out: www.3books.co  Dr. Jen Gunter is a Canadian-American OB/GYN and a pain medicine physician. Jen is commonly referred to as Twitter’s resident gynecologist, the Internet’s OB/GYN, and is one of the fiercest advocates for women’s health. Jen writes the New York Times columns "The Cycle" and "You Asked Jen Gunter." She hosts the popular TV show Jensplaining and she has written the bestselling books "The Preemie Primer" and "The Vagina Bible." Chapter Description: Question for you. Let’s say you were scheduled to give birth to triplets, but they arrived prematurely, and one of them died during birth at the hospital … In that painful situation, what would you do? You’d search for answers! You’d ask questions! And if you’re Dr. Jen Gunter, you would recognize that, even to a doctor, the answers were confusing, misleading, and sometimes contradictory. So what did she do? Well, Jen wrote an entire book on premature babies called the The Preemie Primer. The book became popular and helped Jen develop a massive following to the point where she’s known today as Twitter’s OB/GYN. Why? Because she’s not afraid to give people the cold, hard truth. Today Jen hosts the TV show Jensplaining and writes not one but two New York Times columns! Jen recently wrote another book called The Vagina Bible which took off and has been climbing bestsellers lists. Due to the success of her books Jen is often on promotion tours so I was able to catch up with her at the PenguinRandomHouse offices in Toronto when she came through town for TV shows and to give speeches. Jen and I discuss how medicine became rooted in mansplaining, how to teach kids sex ed, and of course, her three most formative books. Let’s go! WHAT YOU'LL LEARN: How do we break the cycle of “those who get bullied become bullies?” How did Dr. Jen Gunter become known as Twitter’s OB/GYN? How should parents teach their children sex ed? How is the stigma surrounding STIs impacting rates of transmission and treatment? When is shame a wasted emotion and when is it an appropriate emotion? What are the key ingredients for good sex? We all have this ability…but we do have to train it. I will be talking to lots of people who have had various experiences with their own intuitive abilities, experiences that have lead them to the work they are now doing.  My first guest is Jennifer Moore whose newest book, Empathic Mastery, is due out this October. Former Hot Mess and World Class Awfulizer, Jennifer Moore is a mentor and teacher for sensitive, intuitive women. Born from the long lines of high-strung people, Jen (as her family and friends call her) spent the first thirty years of her life struggling to control fear and emotional overwhelm. This constant white-knuckling left Jen exhausted, anxious and over-medicated. Out of sheer desperation, she surrendered to embracing professional support, self-help programs and personal recovery. The relief Jen felt was life changing. This inspired her to develop her own professional skills and share what she learned with others who suffer too. Today Jen stays (mostly) calm, centered and compassionate, even while the chaos and intensity heats up on this planet. With well over thirty years of professional experience, a Master's degree in Psychology & Religion and the distinct honor of being one of EFT International's 18 accredited Master Trainers in the United States, Jennifer brings depth, compassion and wisdom to her work helping empathic women. Jennifer lives in coastal Maine surrounded by flowers, herbs and elderberry bushes. Last week we were joined by an incredible birth mother, Laura, who shared her beautiful story of honesty and open communication in her adoption experience. Today we are joined by the adoptive parents, Jen and Alan, as well as my husband Noah, to get their side of the story on this seemingly perfect adoption. After finding each other through love at first sight, Jen and Alan tried to get pregnant through IVF before deciding adoption was right for them. Once Laura selected them as her adoptive parents, they worked together to create a healthy and open relationship. Today Jen and Alan are telling us all about the research that went into finding their birth mother, what their first ‘perfect date’ was really like with Laura and Jerome, and the details that came together to make this story “meant to be.” Every adoption story is different, and Jen and Alan are proof of that. Their journey is filled with hope, positivity and lots of love.

There's never been a time when words matter more. They have the force to spark ideas, to build, to topple the status quo. Words enter the world when you use your voice. But what is your voice? For some of us, we're not even sure what our voice sounds like, let alone how to use it. That’s why we’re pleased to welcome writer Kathy Khang, our second guest in the For the Love of Books series. Kathy has struggled with speaking out for her entire life. And despite having so many things to say, for ten years Kathy wrestled with finding the courage to write her new book Raise Your Voice. Today Jen and Kathy talk about raising our kids to have a voice, using our voice in this culture, and the tension that comes with it. Kathy reminds us what we have to say is worthy, it matters, and it's powerful.  We all benefit when we learn how we can use our voices to do great good in the world.

Jen Rubio is the co-founder of Away Luggage. Before starting Away, Jen built her career by creating compelling brand narratives for some of the world’s most innovative companies. She started at Johnson and Johnson. After working there for a couple years, she quickly moved onto work for herself as a social media manager, before that was even a real job title. In 2011, Jen joined the early executive team for Warby Parker as Head of Social Media. It was at Warby Parker, that she met her Away co-founder, Steph Korey. In 2015, Jen was named to the Forbes 30 Under 30 list for Marketing and Advertising. Jen eventually left Warby Parker and moved to London to join AllSaints, as Head of Innovation. However, her entrepreneurial spirit took over, and she quickly left that job to launch Away.  Away is a modern travel brand that creates thoughtful luggage and travel accessories, designed to make travel more seamless. Away has rapid growth: starting with less than ten employees and now boasting almost 200 employees. The company has pulled in more than $125 million dollars in revenue since its launch in 2016. Today Jen is here to talk about how to find the perfect co-founder, how to fundraise, and shares her expert insight on how to effectively brand a business.

Today Jen drinks one of her first favorites…Tröegs Perpetual IPA. (7.5% abv, 85 ibu) Greg finds the Schmaltz He’Brew MANNAge a Tois variety pack withHop Manna (6.8% abv, 65 ibu), Hop Mania (7.8% abv) , and Mop Mamma (brewed with peach, apricot, and hanenero and 5.8% abv)…and the results are delicious. Greg’s intended topic? Tidying up and decluttering closets, continuing from last week’s #infomagical adventure and also borrowing from Marie Kando’s book: The Life Changing Magic of Tidying Up: The Japanese Are of Decluttering and Organizing. Jen’s not having it. None of it. Particularly not the “sparking joy” bits. In fact, she takes a hot, steaming dump all over Greg’s enthusiasm and Ms. Kando’s magical Japanese art of doing what apparently millions of people and books have already done…and it’s amusing. Eventually, across the socially precarious bridge of a protracted silence, Greg claims, “Sometimes you disappoint me.” The conversation then shifts to geriatric gymtimidation, the scourge of resting cantankerous old-woman bitch face, and the fact that not all lunks are muscular dudes. Sometimes they’re old, feminine, and leathery…and visual darts from Bubbe are much more intimidating than anything some swole-up, orange-toned, full-tilt Ed Hardied guido might say or do. And then there’s the lady on the treadmill in Daisy Dukes, puffy socks, and with her substantive, pendulous bosoms NOT nestled in particularly supportive undergarments.  One could call them unbridled.  (You might remember her from, “Of Gym Rats and Jackasses,” a very early D2D podcast.) This is a fun ride. We present to you, “Sometimes You Disappoint Me.” Oh, and the music.  We begin with the Ed Sheeran penned beauty, “Love Yourself,” performed with such skill, subtlety and soul by Justin Bieber. That’s right, folks, good old JB.  And the video is outstanding and interesting as well.  Then, at the end, theMetroGnome mix of “Happy” by Pharrell Williams.  Good stuff.  Really good stuff.  Check it out.
