Living Life... Like It Matters Podcast

Think it Through. Do you know ‘Behavior Reinforcement”? Do you understand ‘Behavior modification'? Do you know how we are programmed? Do you want tomorrow to be better than today? On today's podcast of Living Life Like It Matters, we are going to put our ‘big person' pants on. Life doesn't offer ‘DO OVERS', and it is impossible to go BACK IN TIME. Today Mr. Black is going to challenge listeners to properly process this moment in time. There are times in life that become a ‘fork in the road' moment. Who we hook our wagon to in marriage? Whether we go to college, or to work? Civilian or military, university or technical school, the God of the Bible, or the gods of the world? To remove a life for convenience, or accept the responsibility, and choose life? If you could be convinced that this moment in time is a FORK IN THE ROAD, would you consider that in your vote? The Time is Now to Listen IN, and to Act OUT.  If you enjoy the show, please tell a friend or two, or three about it. If you are able to leave an honest rating and, or, review it would be appreciated. Be sure to Like and Follow us on our facebook page. Outer Circle Inner Stillness
Measuring Progress in Recovery Part 1, with Ian Nelson

Outer Circle Inner Stillness

Here's a scenario. One partner is in active addiction. They he or she gets into recovery. But that person has a partner who's been hurt, deceived, betrayed, and really confused, and now that partner is asking...how do I know my partner is making ANY progress in sobriety at all? For that matter, the person in recovery may be asking of themselves, “How do I know I'm getting any better?” Rhys and Ian reflect on shared experiences of acting out, recovery, laboring for greater healing, and working to define, and sometimes re-define, what is sobriety in our individual lives. Defining progress means first defining the problem. We discuss the way that a person engages with a substance or behavior, whether that be alcohol, weed, porn, media in general, food, legalism, or other things. Rhys introduces the question, "What is the desired effect of [behavior of choice]?" Rhys says, "The same substance, used for a different desired result, affects how the relationship with it is." Most recovery programs have a foundational concept of abstinence. We discuss the "Just stop it," approach to Acting Out and whether or not it actually works. We explore more gentle and mindful approaches that tend to work better. One problem with this approach is that people take the attitude of, "Well, as long as I just stop [this one behavior]...then I'm good," and don't pursue any further growth or change. We rant on the limits to accountability software, and how this resource is good and fine, but an over-reliance on it can shortchange the growth process. Ian calls is a game - "Here's another fun thing to hack!" Rhys says it is, "A lazy approach to one's own soul." When it comes to establishing boundaries with the internet in support of abstaining from porn, Rhys is in favor of, "If you're gonna limit access...then REALLY limit access," up to and including removing the internet from your house. An abstinence approach tends to invoke the "White knuckling method," which Ian describes as "Really thin protections against the deeper, weighty reasons for addiction." Ian reflects on the interactions between emotional development and spiritual development, and how some church cultures - in their pursuit of a rigid holiness - have sometimes prevented adequate emotional development, and promoted shame. We reflect on how a more open, and compassionate approach to spiritual growth that normalizes struggle and provides easily accessible venues to openly discuss them, can save us from shame, and help us become healthier. Predictably enough, Rhys gets on the IFS soapbox and encourages us all to consider with compassionate curiosity, all our parts...even the ones that Act Out. When a person who is a system can realize they are a system, they can escape a multitude of confusing and chaotic experiences. I use the words, ideas, and beliefs of people that have changed my life, to tell a story of transformation. In each motivational clip, I try my best to use the music to guide my speakers and deliver their message in a combined effort towards one main point. The idea of this piece is that you can have life just the way you want it inside your mind. It is possible. It just can't be handed to you. It takes work. It takes SELF DISCIPLINEWhy is that important? The reason that we choose drugs in the first place is that there is a presence of pain and fear in our lives or because we are missing joy in our lives. The way to battle that is to stop placing your joy in nouns; in people, places, and things. Stop placing your joy in things that have to be present in order for you to feel joy. Your joy, your passions, your purpose, must come from within. You must be able to ACT OUT your joy.Find the predicates, adjectives, and verbs that bring you joy. Things that you can DO, that bring you a sense of fulfillment. These things will replace your need to use drugs with what has been missing all along. The cure for addiction has been found. We interview our friend and radical badass Eleanor Goldfield, about her new film “Hard Road of Hope” which documents the long history and current state of resistance and organizing in West Virginia against the rapacious coal mining and fracking industries that have all but destroyed their communities and the land that sustains them. We also go deep on the meanings and usefulness of words and labels, like “activist” and “anarchist”...and art's role in revolution. What's agitating us? The tension between all the good faith in humanity vibes that comes with successful mutual aid organizing efforts, but also the frustration of knowing that the support is only just temporary and not systemic; laws being passed in states to whitewash U.S. history and punish teachers who teach children the truth; and the existential horror that is the forever reality of plastic waste. Hosted by Milly Harmon, Shelly Williams, Kaitlin Sopoci-Belknap, and Jessica Munger. A Democracy Unlimited Media Collaborative production. Special thanks to Jason Bayless and A Radical Guide for production support and Alfonso Saldaña for support on graphics. Transition music in this episode is from Eleanor's EP, No Solo. Resources discussed: *Find Mutual Aid networks in your community *If you haven't yet, you need to read A People's History of the United States by Howard Zinn (and yes, Kaitlin is right, the audio version is narrated by Matt Damon and Howard Zinn) *Eleanor's work: Art Killing Apathy website. Redacted Tonight. A couple definitions and acronyms mentioned: *BIPOC = Black, Indigenous and People of Color. *LGBTQ = Lesbian, Gay, Bi, Trans and Queer. *Critical Race Theory = A race-equity framework and approach to understanding educational inequality and structural racism to find solutions that lead to greater justice. CRT seeks to critically examine the law as it intersects with issues of race and to challenge the mainstream liberal approaches to racial justice. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/agitated-podcast/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/agitated-podcast/support

Today they focus on the ongoing protest movement sweeping the country, the victories against racist monuments and memorials, divisions between the White House and the military, and more. Confirmed cases of Covid-19 are skyrocketing in a dozen states, mostly in the Deep South and the Midwest as governors insist that their states reopen. In those 12 states, confirmed cases are up more than 50 percent over what they were two weeks ago. Only Utah’s governor announced that the state would delay its reopening to deal with the new cases. Four of those states--North Carolina, South Carolina, Florida, and Nevada--are now seeing a record number of new coronavirus cases. Dr. Krutika Kuppalli, an infectious disease physician and vice chair of the Infectious Disease Society of America’s Global Health Committee, joins the show with John. Large-scale peaceful protests continued across the country this week, and there are plans for more over the weekend. Protesters in Seattle took control of a local police precinct and began handing out free food and water. And statues commemorating confederate leaders continue to be toppled. Meanwhile, President Trump announced yesterday that the Republican National Convention would be moved to Jacksonville after the governor of North Carolina would not allow delegates to attend without wearing masks. Even more controversially, the White House announced that the President’s first post-Covid-19 campaign rally would be held in Tulsa, Oklahoma, the site of the worst anti-black massacre in the country’s history. And that rally will be held on June 19th, also known as Juneteenth, the day on which the entrance of Union troops into the last bastion of slavery is commemorated. Brian speaks with Estevan Hernandez, an organizer with the ANSWER Coalition who has been in the streets helping to organize recent protests. Eleanor Goldfield has just completed a long-form documentary that is unlike anything that’s been done on the issue of fracking and the environment in West Virginia. Hard Road of Hope introduces you to the people of West Virginia and shows you the toll that more than a century of coal mining and fracking has taken on the land and the people of that beautiful state. The film was just selected by the Rome Independent Prisma Awards. Creative activist and journalist Eleanor Goldfield, host of the podcast Act Out!, which airs on Free Speech TV, whose work is at ArtKillingApathy.com, and who is the writer, director, and producer of Hard Road of Hope, joins the show with Brian. It’s Friday! So it’s time for the week’s worst and most misleading headlines. John speaks with Steve Patt, an independent journalist whose critiques of the mainstream media have been a feature of his site Left I on the News and on twitter @leftiblog, and Sputnik producer Nicole Roussell.

Emerging R&B star Porcelan joined us for an exclusive interview on Instagram Live recently. The singer has been keeping us impressed with each song she's put out over the past few years including “Real Thing Don't Change”, “Lois Lane”, and her most recent “Act Out”. Her unique blend of timeless R&B meshed with progress elements from the genre have kept us anticipating each new single. She had the most success with her hit “Lois Lane” which reached the Top 15 on the Billboard Adult R&B Charts. However, some don't realize that Porcelan's journey started many years before this. Porcelan began pursuing her dreams years ago which led to an appearance on 106 & Park, working with Timbaland, opening for Tank, and even touring in China. During this interview, we discuss all that and more. We even touched on her upcoming debut album “Mood Ring” and what to expect on there. Check out what she had to say in the interview above.

On this episode of “Political Misfits,” hosts Bob Schlehuber and Jamarl Thomas are joined by Teresa Lundy, political strategist and principle of TML communications, to talk about the wave of attacks on Bernie Sanders over the weekend, the mainstream media’s obsession with ‘Bernie Bros’ and whether smearing Sanders on the basis of the alleged meanness of his supporters online will work. Are nasty memes and comments really as important as the histories of bigotry and exploitation other candidates carry with them, and if not, why are the supposed “bros” getting so much air time?Bob and Jamarl also discuss the Nevada caucus, Sanders’ trajectory in state and national polls, and whether the new, untested iPhone “tool” the Nevada caucus plans to use to track vote counts augurs a repeat of the Iowa debacle. In the second hour, the hosts are joined by Eleanor Goldfield, founder and host of the show Act Out! and co-host of the Common Censored podcast along with Lee Camp, to discuss the opioid crisis in America, including reports that big pharmaceutical companies are going to pay out far less to cover the costs of the crisis they spawned than did Big Tobacco 20 years ago. Looking at reports from over the weekend that brought to light more detail about Democratic primary contender Michael Bloomberg’s decades-long history of sexism in the workplace, Goldfield provides some analysis of the Democrats’ hypocrisy when it comes to racism, sexism and other issues, and questions who the Democratic establishment really wants to beat - Trump, or Sanders. For the weekly Politics of Art segment, the hosts discuss the unpleasant thrills of “Uncut Gems” and the fun of a movie populated by monsters. Finally, they are joined in the last segment by Sputnik DC Bureau Chief Mindia Gavasheli to talk about the latest hit piece on Sputnik. As the owner of ACT OUT in Class, Adrian teaches emotional intelligence through drama workshops and shows teachers and mentors how to effectively do it themselves. He is an Associate Professor of Theatre and Head of Acting at San Diego State University and has over twenty years experience performing in various entertainment venues. His versatility in acting is immense, having done everything from being a seal trainer and stunt man to Shakespearean and comedic roles on the stage.   Adrian started teaching acting during his graduate studies, and fell into the realization that acting uncovers emotional intelligence. Drama exposes stories and emotions. Studying acting helped Adrian become a better husband and father, and teacher in general. Most of what keeps people back from being able to act is their emotional inhibitions that don't always exist in children. Teaching acting is a lot of helping people overcome their adult inhibitions and become more childlike.  Adrian starts with helping his student become free, then develop passion, followed by coaching on technique. Technique has more to do with what's going on in the situation or another person you are talking to, and how to deal with it. Two things that Adrian has learned about parenting through his acting experience are 1) allowing children to recognize for themselves when they have done something wrong and teaching as a form of discipline rather than punishment, and 2) learning to apologize and model humility for his children. It's tempting to be reactive to the things that trigger strong emotions, but Adrian has learned how to hold space for those feelings to know how to proactively respond to those feelings rather than being reactive. Teaching to the whole child requires two major components. 1) using questions, and 2) kinesthetic awareness. Adrian sees himself as a tour guide rather than a purveyor of knowledge. He teaches by asking questions, and guiding rather than always preaching. Teaching through questions allows children to think and pull out of themselves the things that really matter. You might even discover that children already have a good grasp of the concept you want to teach them. Kinesthetic awareness means physical play, and physical safety. This helps children become aware of how to use their bodies and express their feelings in physical ways. When children are reactive and impulsive it's important to hold space and help them to work through the feelings. Adrian says three more best-practices to hold space and manage strong emotions: 1) Breathe. Just breathe. Don't just breathe when you're in high-emotion situations. Practice breathing. 2) Ask if they know why you said no to them. 3) Reward and reinforce positive behaviors. Theatre exercises help children recognize different emotions, and how to respond to other people's emotions. Adrian teaches activities like saying empty phrases with an emotion to help his students understand the differences. Adrian also explains what he means by "backward design." It is basically takin a vision for the direction you want to go, and then stating that intention at the beginning so you work toward that objective. Sounds a lot like family culture! Ultimately, being able to push through our limitations of our emotional development, we have to be willing to sit with the discomfort and work through it anyway. Adrian and I talked a lot about the importance of the struggles of life, and that emotional intelligence and backward design are closely linked to personal development. Our children deserve to know that they are worthy of being loved in spite of their mistakes because we are all imperfect, and we learn from our imperfections! Interview with Eleanor Goldfield This week we spoke with Eleanor Goldfield, who is an activist on the far left and a proponent of creative activism, a stance that centers creative approaches to direct action with the aim of leading people to interrogate their own politics on an emotional and psychological level. From her website:  “Creative Activism is outreach and change through the mediums that appeal to all people and all of people – their emotions, conscience and intellect, in that order. It places itself at the intersection of pop culture and politics, bringing the two together.” We talk about different approaches to politics and direct action, as well as her new book Paradigm Lost; Radical Verse and Visuals for the Shift, which is a collection of her original spoken word poetry accompanied by mixed media artwork from around a dozen artists. We also talk about the book and her upcoming performance date in Asheville on December 9th at Firestorm Books and Coffee! #150: Finally, an Answer to the Question: Why Are You So ‘Quiet’? [Podcast]

Have you ever had it kindly pointed out to you that you are quiet? I bet you have, and if you're like many introverts and highly sensitive people it can have a draining effect over time. Welcome to Episode 150 of the Sheep Dressed Like Wolves Podcast. In this show I consider 5 questions we can reflect on when we begin to feel like we are 'too quiet' and resent our natural orientation to the world. We will discover why we must enjoy rather than resent this quietness, and see it as our biggest strength that can actually unlock the door to us making an impact on the world. A Familiar Situation You've probably been in a situation similar to this. You're sat quietly, thinking deeply, maybe phasing in and out of a conversation that's going on nearby. It's not interesting enough to add anything so you feel happy to just sit and 'listen'. When all of a sudden the peace is broken as attention turns to you. ‘Is everything ok, you're being very quiet?' You launch into a reassuring monologue and splutter out some kind of apology for your lack of noise. The self-conscious feelings rise, and you start searching for something to contribute, to seek ways to deflect the attention from the fact that you are not seeking any attention. And once again you lambast yourself with criticism, 'you're too quiet...why can't you be more like everyone else?' Quiet = Not OK This message can chip away at us over time. From school reports, to social situations, and working in groups; being quiet means that something is wrong. The way it's so often used today, quiet means shy, lacking confidence, sad, disinterested, disengaged etc. It is an insult or at least something to be fixed. It is rarely seen as something to be encouraged, even when the results of introverted quietness may speak for themselves. Introverts are quiet in all manner of positive ways: to re-energise, to ruminate about a problem, to think creatively, to take in a new situation or unfamiliar place. Quietness is a necessary part of information and sensory processing. When we're made to believe that our natural way of interacting with the world is a flaw, or a demonstration that something is wrong with us, it makes it very difficult to function naturally with confidence. In this episode you'll hear me talk about the following questions and why asking them can help us live and thrive in our quietness, even when we're being told to get louder: WHERE is the quietness coming from? WHEN are you quiet? WHY do you feel 'too quiet'? WHAT difference is your quietness making? WHEN is it not true that you are quiet? Over to You I love to hear the conversations that these episodes can spark. To get started I like to ask a question. This week it is this: Have you ever been told you are too quiet? How did it make you feel? #140: You Can’t Escape Your Constructs, But You Can Take Control [Podcast]

The Gentle Rebel Podcast

Welcome to Episode 140 of the Sheep Dressed Like Wolves Podcast. In this week's show I explore how we find meaning in the world according to Brian Little's definitions of personal projects. In his latest book, Me, Myself, and Us, Professor Brian Little says that we no longer think in terms of nature vs nurture as two sides of a debate. Rather consensus is emerging to say that the key thing to think about is how we nurture our natures. And so "third natures arise out of the personal commitments and core projects that we pursue in our daily lives. Under this new perspective genes influence us as do our circumstances, but we are not hostage to them." Building Our Reality We all build a picture of the world using a set of personal constructs. This is how we make predictable paths through the complexity of the world, for example seeing people through simple filters (male or female, introvert or extrovert, psychopath or normal). These constructs influence the way we interact with the world and once another and may lead to us having skewed or closed-minded views. As Professor Little points out, we can't escape constructs. They are a fact of life, an inevitability of human consciousness. Without them we would be completely overloaded and overwhelmed by information. But we do have a choice as to how we interact with them and how open we are to empathically developing them. Covered in this episode: Examples of constructs we might use to filter the world The negative implications of having two few constructs Why the world is not quite what it seems The reality of broken constructs Why introverts and highly sensitive people need to beaware of the constructs they create around their understanding of these temperaments Over to You Have you ever had one of your personal constructs broken? Either by a change in your own circumstances or by meeting someone who completely changed what you thought to be true. Please leave your response in the comments below. I'd love to hear your stories.
