We are back!!! Sorry for missing a week, folks. Had some audio issues with this episode and needed a little time to figure out the best approach. 99% of the audio glitches were on my end, and my guest offers some amazing insights that I didn't want to risk losing by reshooting the episode or losing context by editing out the question. All said, John Patrick Bray and I delve into some great topics and themes including - storytelling and playing with structure, the process of playwriting, the exercise of "negotiating over an object", and a different mindset when it comes to stage directions. We also discuss the concept of "great reckonings in small rooms", the struggle of dry spells and making playwriting a priority, subtext vs the obvious, and finding opportunities. We manage a tangent into the realm of movies and our feeling about Midsommer and Heritage that I find amusing. I hope you can forgive the technical difficulties and still mine through the knowledge within. I know it can be distracting, but I promise it'll be worth the it in the end. Thanks for you support and patience. Enjoy!John Patrick Bray has written plays under grants from The National Endowment for the Arts and the Acadiana Center for the Arts in Louisiana, and has earned commissions from theatre companies and arts agencies around the country. His plays and monologues are published with Applause Theatre and Cinema Books, Smith and Kraus, Original Works Publishing, Next Stage Press, JAC Publishing, and  Heartland Plays. Bernardo, a Latin performer of Mexican descent, started acting at his high school in Santa Ana, California, before receiving his B.A. in theater from UCLA, followed by the master's program at the prestigious Actors Studio Drama School in New York City. Throughout his education he trained under notable teachers such as Moctesuma Esparza, Jose Luis Valenzuela, Jacque Heim at UCLA and Ron Leibman, Barbara Poitier, and Susan Aston among others in New York. Since returning to Los Angeles, he has steadily worked in film, television, commercials, and print. Highlights from his TV career include recurring roles on FX Network's “Snowfall,” where he was directed by John Singleton, USA Network's “Queen of the South” as the right-hand man of a drug kingpin and TNT's “Animal Kingdom.” He has also guest starred in hit series such as “Dexter,” “Weeds,” “Dead To Me,” and “Insecure,” among others. Upcoming for Bernardo is a role in a new Hulu TV show titled “This Fool,” executive produced by Fred Armisen, premiering summer of 2022. His most notable film role is in the Clint Eastwood directed Warner Bros. film “Sully” starring Tom Hanks. Bernardo trained with a Navy Seal to portray real-life NYPD scuba diver ‘Robert Rodriguez.' Robert was on the front lines rescuing passengers from the plane once it had safely landed in the Hudson River. Growing up, Bernardo considered himself dramatic and eccentric, participating in numerous school plays and pageants, singing and dancing. That passion turned into a true respect for the craft as a professional. He enjoys putting all the pieces of a character together from body language and speech to the emotional core, studying the script and finding clues to who the character is meant to be. As a Latin actor he is proud to be part of the turning of the tide as Hollywood expands its representation of what it means to be a Latin actor. Outside of acting, he enjoys travelling, having gone to Brazil for the World Cup, backpacked through Spain, and even attended a traveling acting school in Italy. Growing up, books were his escape, and he passes that on by reading to children in his spare time. He is also passionate about workers' rights and union's protective services. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/followingfilms/support

On this episode of ActorSpeak, Austin Basis continues to speak with actor Goya Robles (Get Shorty, POWER Book III: Raising Kanan, 11:55, Brut Force, Rattled!) In Part 2, we discuss the crossroads of abuse and trauma, his mentor Ellen Burstyn, not being killed off on Get Shorty, working with director Adam Arkin, his self-critical nature, rehearsing more to reduce the "noise," working with Javier Molina, chemistry as a willingness to receive, experiencing truth, going towards the uncomfortable, LatinX buying power and representation, humanizing "villains," feeding his acting compulsion, and his dream of opening an acting school for inner city youth. A Stamford, CT native, Goya Robles is a Lifetime Member of The Actors Studio and holds an MFA from The Actors Studio Drama School at Pace University in New York. A Latino actor of Puerto Rican and Ecuadorian descent, his portrayal of heartbreaking, volatile, vulnerable characters have become a stamp in all of his work. Goya is most recognized for his breakout role as Yago in the critically acclaimed series Get Shorty on EPIX, working alongside Ray Romano and Chris O'Dowd. He has starred in numerous independent films, including a supporting lead role as Teyo in the film 11:55, starring John Leguizamo, David Zayas, and Julia Stiles. He's also executive produced the short film WONDER, which won over 20 national and international film festival awards, including the HBO Shorts Competition at the Martha's Vineyard African American Film Festival and the Audience Award at Urbanworld. Most recently, he produced and created the art film Who Am I? - a spoken word piece about race and responsibility. You can see him in the upcoming films Brut Force, Rattled! and High Ceilings, and the TV series POWER Book III: Raising Kanan on Starz. Goya's theater credits include The Actors Studio West production of THE MOTHERF*CKER WITH THE HAT by Stephen Adly Guirgis in LA, EXTREMITIES by William Mastrosimone, and CRYSTAL CLEAR by Phil Young, both at Dance New Amsterdam Theater in NYC. He also starred in the LAByrinth Theater Barn Series of Mark Borkowski's play, VALENTINO'S WING, starring Michael Shannon, Annabella Sciorra, and directed by Ellen Burstyn. Goya is also the creator of Paint The Mic, a performing and visual arts collaboration which brings attention to local organizations whose mission is to support under-served communities. As a spoken word artist himself, Goya created a way for artists of diverse disciplines to use their craft as a way to directly impact communities in need. Goya also taught slam poetry at The Lee Strasberg Institute in West Hollywood and his first compilation of poems was called Spit My Soul and released at the Nuyorican Poets Cafe. What strikes me most about Goya's work besides his talent are his heart and authenticity. But it's his artistry that really shines through in everything he does- whether on stage, on screen or as a poet and producer. As both an actor and an advocate he is able to speak the truth, taking his pain and perspective and channeling them into his art. That's what The Actors Studio is all about, and Goya is one of the members that best exemplifies that. Did you know that the term "Woman Computer" was once a job title? Given that March is National Women's History Month, we have set the intention to share accomplishments of dynamic women pioneers across various industries. In this week's Financial Fridays episode, we're focusing on women in STEM and honoring Katherine Johnson. You may know that on February 24, 2020, Katherine Johnson passed away at age 101. She was one of the first African-American graduates at West Virginia University. In 1953, she started working at NASA's precursor, the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics. Johnson joined West Computing, which was a segregated unit of African-American women computers. For her computations on America's first human spaceflight project, Freedom 7, Johnson became the first African-American woman to have her name on a technical paper issued by NASA's Langley Research Center. In 2015, President Barack Obama awarded Johnson the Presidential Medal of Freedom for her many contributions to STEM and the country as a whole, despite segregation by racism and sexism. In addition to Suki's tip to ride the wave of market volatility, you'll also hear Coach Colette share a tribute and a personal anecdote about James Lipton. Lipton passed away on March 2, 2020. He was a writer, lyricist, actor, and dean emeritus of the Actors Studio Drama School at Pace University in New York City. If you enjoyed this episode, why not share it on Instagram and tag @Coach_Colette! She’ll be sure to share your comments and big takeaways on her Instagram Stories. "I went into the piece thinking I was Gracie, and I came out realizing that I'm George." I last saw Lauren in person about 12 years ago when we were both students at the Actors Studio Drama School in New York. She stayed, I didn't. Already brilliant and funny when I knew her then, she's since come into her own as a performer, as a writer, and as a human being in a way I truly admire. In our discussion (a long one again, I know, I'm sorry), we talk about the craft of acting, her love of the medium of television, the genesis of her play-in-development about George Burns and Gracie Allen, and why we think Aaron Sorkin is so damn good. Duration:  82 minutes.Subscribe to the Obcast in iTunes or through this link.Links from the show: Lauren's websiteThe Facebook page for her play The Raconteurs (give it some likes) Her essay on Gracie Allen at TravalancheHer essay on Burns and Allen, (mostly) available through Google BooksLauren's blog project #GirlWriter Lauren on Twitter as @LaurenMilberger
