Kim and Kezia speak with addictionologist Dr. Evelyn Higgins from Wired for Addiction. Dr. Higgins is an expert in the epidemiology of addiction. If you could identify the brain chemicals that cause alcohol or drug addiction in your brain, then what would be the next step? What if you could start at a young age by creating different habits if you had the scientific knowledge to prepare you to do so? What gets a person to that place of addiction? If you actually knew that you didn't have to stay in that dark place, would you? If you could have had your DNA tested at a young age to see if you were predisposed to substance use disorder, would you have done so? If you knew what lay ahead, what would you have done differently? "Does your DNA predispose you to substance abuse? New research suggests that addiction is a biological condition. How would knowing your risk for alcohol or drug dependency impact your choices? Dr. Evelyn Higgins, CEO & Founder of Wired For Addiction®, is an international expert in the epidemiology of addiction. She believes the way we perceive, treat, and manage mental health and substance use disorders needs to evolve to reflect what we now know about human physiology. Technological advances have given us the genetic tools to identify the biomarkers of addiction. So why aren't we using that knowledge to improve treatment protocols? We can change the lens through which society views addiction by acknowledging its biological components and promoting science-based solutions." Founder and CEO of Wired For Addiction®, Dr. Evelyn Higgins is a recognized international expert in the epidemiology of addiction. As a Certified Addictionologist, Diplomate of the American College of Addictionology and Compulsive Disorders, and Diplomate of the American Board of Disability Analysts specializing in pain management, Dr. Higgins has had the honor of advising the U.S. Surgeon General, producing and hosting a Gracie Award winning nationally syndicated health and wellness terrestrial radio program, and serving as a 1996 Olympic Team Doctor and Olympic torch bearer. Today my guest is the Founder and CEO of Wired For Addiction®, Dr. Evelyn Higgins is a recognized international expert in the epidemiology of addiction. As a Certified Addictionologist, Diplomate of the American College of Addictionology and Compulsive Disorders, and Diplomate of the American Board of Disability Analysts specializing in pain management. We are going to talk about understanding the genetic markers of addiction, and how a simple test could identify missing chemicals that contribute to the mental health disorders that lead to addiction like anxiety and depression. Her work is fascinating and I can't wait for you to hear it. But before we jump in, it's time for new resources! I just completed the 12 step workshop last week and the topic was step 12 which is about carrying the message, or in other words, being of service to those who suffer from addiction. I think I've probably shared this before but it's worth repeating. For a lot of people with little kids or constrictive schedules, I would like to offer up a flexible and simple way to be useful, and that is to practice what I call “willingness calls”. It's also a simple way to establish a support system if you don't have one already. A willingness call is simply to find 3 or 4 people that you can reach out to on a regular basis to check in with. You do it when you feel good, because most of us just want to isolate when we feel bad. There's an old saying that we don't rise to the level of our expectation, we fall to the level of our training. It can be a short call, just a hey how are you? Let them share a little bit, then you offer up what is going on in your life and that's it! Pretty soon you are current with several people, and when life get's too “lifey” you are already in the habit of calling, and you don't have to spend a lot of time explaining the back story. You can get right into solution. The interesting thing that happens when you practice willingness calls, is you might catch a friend in the middle of being upset and you can offer support and be of service. Or they might start reaching out to you in a moment when you feel shut down or too sad to call. I've had such amazing experiences over the years of this practice, so I wanted to share this with you too. So that's it! My guest today is Dr. Evelyn Higgins. Founder of Wired For Addiction®, Dr. Evelyn Higgins is a recognized international expert in the science of addiction recovery. She is a Certified Addictionologist, Diplomate of the American Board of Disability Analysts specializing in pain management, and Diplomate of the American College of Addictionology and Compulsive Disorders. Dr. Higgins has had the honor of advising the U.S. Surgeon General, producing and hosting a Gracie Award winning nationally syndicated health and wellness radio program, and serving as a 1996 Olympic Team Doctor and Olympic torch bearer. With 35 years in practice, Dr. Higgins has specialized in the clinical application of the neuroscience & epigenetics behind mental health complexities and currently finds herself at the nexus of epigenetics, neuroscience, and health. Exploring the Camino de Santiago and the Science of Addiction Recovery with Dr. Evelyn Higgins Connect with people from all over. The Camino de Santiago, or the Way of Saint James, is a 500 mile pilgrimage across Spain that has been completed for centuries. It is a journey that has been taken by many people seeking spiritual enlightenment, physical challenge, and a connection with people from all over the world. Dr. Higgins was inspired to undertake the Camino de Santiago after reading Paulo Coelho's book, The Alchemist. She left her practice for 32 days and walked 800 kilometers across Spain. She was determined to find out what the Camino had to offer her. On the Camino, Dr. Higgins was amazed by the connection she made with people from all over the world. She was approached by people from different countries and languages, who wanted to walk with her. Through conversations with these people, she was able to gain insight into different cultures and perspectives. She was also able to connect with herself and find more clarity in her life. The Camino de Santiago offers a unique opportunity to connect with people from all over the world. It is a journey that can be taken alone or with a group. It is a journey of physical and spiritual challenge, as well as a journey of self-discovery. For Dr. Higgins, the Camino de Santiago was a life-changing experience that allowed her to connect with people from all over the world and gain a greater understanding of herself. Find yourself on the Camino. Dr. Higgins encountered many people on her journey, some of whom she would never see again. Despite this, she was able to form meaningful connections with them. She also encountered a priest who gave her an important message: “You know exactly who you are, but when you're finished, you'll be somebody completely different.” This message resonated with Dr. Higgins and motivated her to reflect on her journey and the people she had met. Dr. Higgins also experienced physical and spiritual challenges during her journey. She had to push herself to the limits of her physical endurance, and she also had to confront her own doubts and fears. She found that the physical and spiritual challenges of the Camino de Santiago helped her to connect with herself in a deeper way. She was able to reflect on her life and her purpose, and she was able to gain a greater understanding of who she was and who she wanted to become. Dr. Higgins' journey on the Camino de Santiago was an incredible experience that changed her life in every way. She experienced physical, emotional, intellectual, and spiritual growth. She was able to connect with people from all over the world, and she was able to gain a greater understanding of herself. The Camino de Santiago is a journey of self-discovery, and it is a journey that anyone can take. It is a journey of physical and spiritual challenge, and it is a journey that can help you find yourself. Addiction is a disease. One thing that Dr. Higgins learned on her journey is that addiction is a disease. She was inspired by the stories of people she met on the Camino and the struggles they faced. She was able to gain a greater understanding of addiction and the struggles that people face when they are trying to recover. She was able to understand that addiction is not a moral flaw, but rather a disease that needs to be treated. Dr. Higgins was also inspired by her own family's struggles with addiction. She was able to understand that addiction affects not only the individual, but also their family and friends. Addiction has a ripple effect and can cause a great deal of pain and suffering for those affected. At Wired for Addiction, Dr. Higgins is working to help people understand the science behind addiction. She is looking at neurotransmitters, hormones, and genetic snips to try to understand why people become addicted and how best to treat them. She is also trying to reduce the stigma around addiction and to show people that it is a disease that needs to be treated. Addiction is a disease and it needs to be treated as such. It is not a moral flaw, but rather a medical condition that needs to be addressed. We need to reduce the stigma around addiction and to provide people with the resources they need to recover. We need to understand the science behind addiction and to provide people with the tools they need to make a full recovery. Dr. Higgins' journey on the Camino de Santiago has inspired her to work to reduce the stigma around addiction and to provide people with the resources they need to make a full recovery. Seek professional help for addiction. It is important to understand that addiction is a biopsychosocial disease. This means that it is not just a psychological issue, but that there is also a biological and social component. People who are addicted to drugs or alcohol may have underlying traumas or undiagnosed conditions that can affect their physiology. It is important to look at the biological and social components of addiction, as well as the psychological aspects. At Wired for Addiction, Dr. Higgins and her team are working to provide people with the tools they need to make a full recovery. They offer a 15-minute consultation at no cost to point people in the right direction for their recovery. They work with individuals, treatment centers, therapists, coaches, physicians, and even the justice system. It is important to seek professional help for addiction. Addiction is not a moral flaw, but rather a medical condition that needs to be addressed. We need to reduce the stigma around addiction and to provide people with the resources they need to make a full recovery. We need to understand the science behind addiction, and to provide people with the tools they need to make a full recovery. Seeking professional help is the first step in the recovery process and it is important to find the right help for you. Multiple perspectives lead to success. One of the most important aspects of seeking professional help is to understand the multiple perspectives that are involved. This is why it is important to find a professional who can understand and appreciate multiple perspectives. Evelyn, a doctor and addiction specialist, is a great example of someone who understands the multiple perspectives involved in addiction treatment. She understands the clinical perspective, but also the personal perspective. She understands that when it comes to treating addiction, it is important to be both a leader and a friend. Evelyn also understands the importance of seeing the person as a whole, rather than just a set of symptoms. She understands that there are multiple facets to a person, and that it is important to take all of these into consideration when treating addiction. Evelyn also understands the importance of looking at the person holistically, taking into account their family and social situations as well as their clinical needs. This allows her to provide the best possible care for her patients. The ability to see multiple perspectives is key to success in any field. It allows us to have a more holistic understanding of the situation, to better understand the needs of those we are helping, and to provide the best possible care. Evelyn's example is a great reminder of the importance of understanding multiple perspectives in order to succeed. Taking the time to listen and understand the different facets of a person can make all the difference in providing the best possible care. --- Why does Movers Mindset exist? Each conversation feeds my insatiable curiosity, but I share them to turn on a light for someone else, to inspire them, or to give them their next question. In the podcast, I talk with movement enthusiasts to learn who they are, what they do, and why they do it. I'm interested in the nature and philosophy of movement and in exploring themes like independence, self-direction, and human excellence. My interests color each conversation and provide some structure to Movers Mindset. But since I like to take the scenic route, every conversation ends up going somewhere unique. I really appreciate your time and attention, and I don't take it for granted. --- I need your support I want to share more of these amazing conversations, with amazing people, but I'm limited by the cost of the project. Please support what I'm doing. Every dollar really makes a difference. You can make a one-time contribution via Buy Me a Coffee, https://www.buymeacoffee.com/moversmindset …or make a recurring contribution via Patreon, https://www.patreon.com/moversmindset --- Thank you! My personal mission is creating better conversations to spread understanding and compassion. And Movers Mindset is one of the things I do in service of my mission. Drop by constantine.name for my weekly email, my other podcasts, writing and more. The Movers Mindset project grew from conversations I started having as part of my personal journey rediscovering movement. The project started late in 2015, and it was initially simply a web site that shared others' writing. The project grew, and in 2017 I started the podcast. I've worked extremely hard, but none of this would have been possible without so much help from so many people. Cheers! ɕ
There were times in my journey that I thought I'd gone mad and then you find people that make you realise that you're not alone, today's guest has done that for me. Dr Perry Nicholson, who I came across on Instagram about 18 months ago. I have to say, this man just blew my mind. I asked myself why is every doctor not talking like this man does? He's quite phenomenal. Listen in to hear his story and his thoughts on chasing pain. KEY TAKEAWAYSNo system in the body ever works alone, never gets injured alone, never heals alone. There's no such thing as an isolated injury in the body. There's no such thing as isolated healing.you might go to a homoeopath because you have something like gout and you might get a completely different treatment to another person because they're looking at the whole system, what's going on in your body from all different areas.Chasing pain means that you point to where pain is, now it's in my right shoulder today, then can you rub my left hip? So you're just chasing this thing all over the place as opposed to asking, why is the body sending this protective signal? And what does pain mean anyway? So to Dr Perry, pain is a request for change.Dr Perry believes, unfortunately we're thriving, but we're getting in our own camps and we're trying to kill the other tribe. So it's not a communal tribe together and then that's part of the stress response or survival responses. If you're feeling stressed, overwhelmed, or uncertain, and as a result you're trying to mentally power through in response, you need to listen to this. We all want to feel and perform at our best. Yet, all of us have had moments where it seems that no matter how hard we try, we're swimming upstream against life's current. Sometimes we feel as if we are struggling just to stay afloat, never mind move ahead. I don't know about you but when that happens, I have often used the strategy of buckling down, working harder, longer, basically driving through sheer force of will. My guest for this episode is Dr. Perry Nickelston. In our conversation he explains the science behind why this approach might be the opposite of what we need to do, to create the results we want. When focusing on performance in any area of our life or work, we need to consider our physiology as much as our mindset. We can work harder, be more disciplined, hustle, and grind. However, when we find ourselves struggling with any of these characteristics it may not be laziness. We need to examine how other variables such as chronic stress, uncertainty, loneliness, lack of sleep, movement, poor diet and other things that biologically influence our inner world, may be impacting how we perform in our outer world. When we fail to appreciate how our environment is impacting brain function, toxicity, inflammation, and a myriad of other biological factors that influence how we feel and perform, it's like driving with one foot firmly down on the accelerator, but the other one steadfast on the brake. I first met Perry years ago when we were both presenting at Filex in Melbourne. I was impressed with his holistic view of wellbeing and optimization of human performance. In this episode he offers a perspective on how aspects of our internal and external environment can have an enormous impact on us. He then shares simple to use practices to help us feel and perform at our best. (Think sweat, pee, poo, lymphatic system, etc.) Inflammation we need vs chronic Subconscious (80-90%) vs conscious (10-20%) body knowledge Not being ashamed when we have pain - it does NOT mean we are broken Tai chi for circular and rotational movement a more flow state and parasympathetic relaxing effect - helical vs straight edge movements (most of ur movements) and sympathetic response Why dancing like no one is watching is so healing Why smiling connects us and increases connection and societal peace Eyes as part of the nervous system and why they are SO important. We need to make sure they are strong. Tongue strength and exercises! (Biggest muscle in body beside the uterus but many tongues get fat and weak.) Why baby steps are everything. Warning: Explicit Conversations About Politics, Culture, & Sexuality It's our 13th ride on the F.D.R. Love Train, now roaring through a Tunnel of Darkness as we react, mourn, explore and analyze the horrific mass murder of eight people in the “Spa Shootings” that started in the little village of Acworth, Georgia and spread through Atlanta. Was it a “Hate Crime” against sex workers as well as Asian-American women? What is “sex addiction,” and why did the self-confessed mass murderer, Robert Aaron Long, use that long-debunked term to explain what Captain Jay Baker of the Cherokee County Sheriff's Office so infuriatingly called a “really bad day for him”? Who are the victims who actually HAD a “really bad day,” and how can we honor their loss with love? Xiaojie Tan, Hyun Jung Grant, Daoyou Feng, Soon Chung Park, Suncha Kim, Yong Ae Yue, Delaina Ashley Yaun, Paul Andre Michels are the names of the dead. Elcias Hernandez-Ortiz was critically injured. The Georgia Massage Parlor Massacre appears to have been a terrible *perfect storm* of three converging toxic factors: 1) Religious sexual abuse; in this case, a devoutly Evangelical, erotophobic cult of “purity” fostered by the killer's family, church (Crabapple First Baptist) and treatment centers (HopeQuest and Maverick) operating almost like a terrorist “cell,” 2) The Sex Addictionology racket; “sex addiction” being a bogus diagnosis (not accepted in the DSM-5), yet an extremely popular accusation AND excuse for unconventional or just bad behavior, as well as the Religious Right's current term of shame for old-time “sin”; and 3) Guns; easy availability (no waiting period) and, while most erotic activities and even sexual thoughts are denigrated, a “fetish” for firearms is elevated, thereby creating a lethal “ammosexual” desire to fire phallic weaponry, instead of just “shooting” the “gun” between your legs safely and consensually. We also discuss the Armie Hammer “cannibalism” story's development into a full-on LAPD rape investigation; Biden's threatening war of “killer” claims with Putin; how proud we are that America is finally #1 in the world regarding something good (vaccinations!), but that we still need to mask up (and make it sexy!). We also talk with Elvis tribute artist Smokey Binion, Jr. (calling in from a small Texas panhandle town that's almost as Christian-conservative a community as Acworth) who longs to “shake a leg” (which leg?) in Bonoboville, and we enjoy a few eargasms and jokes (laughter is a mental orgasm). But our focus is primarily on the tragic and appalling Massage Parlor Massacre, and the best antidote to the mounting madness is following the Bonobo Way of sex-positivity, female empowerment, male well-being and peace through pleasure. That's not artificial consumerist pleasure, but real organic healing pleasure. Post-show, we play a very relevant 2012 throwback, “From ‘The Myth of Sex Addiction' to a Sex Addict Orgy,” featuring The Myth of Sex Addiction author Dr. David Ley. We also thank some of our comrades, including Goddess Soma Snakeoil, Veronica Monet and the wonderful folks at DomCon and Sanctuary, for their uplifting activism in sex work and the sex-positive community during these troubled times. Let's decriminalize and destigmatize consenting adult sex work now! "Health is a direction, not a destination. Your body wants to heal. It never stops fighting for you even when it feels like it has given up. It hasn't. So don't you give up either." When my friend Erica Lippy asked me if I knew the "stop chasing pain" doctor, I didn't, but I immediately wanted to. When I researched and connected with today's guest I was blown away by his wisdom and couldn't wait to share it with you. As we all know, our body is a system. There is not one system that operates on its own. We aren't supposed to live with chronic pain, disease, and chronic inflammation. It's our body trying to tell us something is wrong. Pain is trying to tell us something is wrong. Are you ready to listen? Dr. Perry Nickelston provides so much wisdom on how the systems of the body work and gives us a deeper understanding of another important system in your body that is often ignored, that is the lymphatic system. I was amazed by his wisdom around pain management, how he addresses the root cause of health problems and his secrets for strengthening our immune system. Perry Nickelston, DC, NKT, FMS, SFMA, is a Chiropractic Physician with primary focus on Performance Enhancement, Corrective Exercise, and Metabolic Fitness Nutrition and trained fromThe American College of Addictionology and Compulsive Disorders. This podcast is for those of you who've gotten to the point where it seems like your pain will not improve and there's no way out. On Wellness Force episode 152, Chiropractic Physician and author of the upcoming book, Stop Chasing Pain, Dr. Perry Nickelston, DC, NKT, FMS, SFMA, has been helping people who feel lost without the hope of getting better to restore the quality of their life. He fully understands that we shouldn't approach healing the body with the same method every time because each person lives a different life and has experienced different movements. In fact, to heal an injury, Perry advises that we need to look as far back as 1o years to see what could have led to such pain. By the end of this episode, you will be more somatically aware of yourself and how to identify the toxic environments, thoughts, and poor habits that are causing you pain. Stop Chasing Pain by Dr. Perry Nickelston Dr. Perry Nickelston's upcoming book, Stop Chasing Pain empowers readers to take back control of their lives from pain—to get over their fear of movement and regain a connection with their bodies. Movement is brain candy and neural nitro for the whole body. Change how you move and you change your life! The human body is designed to move. Today’s sedentary lifestyles and cookie-cutter exercise programs make us more prone to pain and injury. The answer lies in going back to how we learned to move in the first place, taking the body back to ground zero and tapping into fundamental human movement patterns. Full-body movements that integrate our muscular subsystems gives us strength, power, flexibility, timing, and coordination. Stop Chasing Pain begins with a fundamental pattern assessment to help readers see where they fall on the movement scale and how much stability they need to regain. Then it explains how to use the RAIL Reset system (Release, Activate, Integrate, Locomotion) to regress movement and progress strength. Mobility restrictions and pain are linked to dysfunction in the five movement subsystems: intrinsics, posterior oblique, anterior oblique, lateral, and deep longitudinal. Without these we don’t move. Dr. Perry shows readers how to release them with rollers, balls, and bands; activate them with Chapman Reflex points; integrate with Powerhouse stretching and Primal Movement Chains fundamental patterns; and then stand up and move (locomotion). Listen To Episode 152 As Perry Nickelston Uncovers: How he began his personal wellness journey to better health after experiencing numerous health problems including cancer. How we can change the perception of the world, ourselves, and what causes us to feel pain. What he did to change his environment to help him heal. What influenced him to start doing more ground based movements to both heal and grow. How he developed his assessment skills to better help patients with their next steps towards healing. Why we shouldn't approach healing a body with the same method because each person lives a different life and has experienced different movements over the course of their lifetime. The core pillars of assessing a patient as a chiropractor. How we can identify our own barriers so we that we may overcome them. The physical signs that someone is under a great amount of stress. How to activate our limbic brain and deal with traumatic stress. What we can do to become more somatically aware of ourselves. How inner stress along with a toxic environment and pollutants can inflame the body. Why phones and social media are affecting our energy levels, mindset, and social life for the worse. The harm we do to ourselves by making bad habits like eating junk food, drinking too much alcohol, and allowing other external factors to become our new normal. What we can do to give our brain what it needs to get enough oxygen to thrive: breathe better, move more, and change your environment. Why medicine isn't a quick fix for all of our illnesses because we're all different and live in various environments. What fermented foods like Kiefer milk can do to dramatically improve our gut health and increase the amount of serotonin in the body. Power Quotes From The Show "When I became a chiropractor, I quickly realized that there has to be something more to just helping people fix a problem. I've always looked for the reason why people become injured, but more importantly, why they don't stay well after seeing a therapist. Why don't these therapies last? That's when I started looking at movement." - Perry Nickelston "You cannot get well in the same environment in which you became ill in the first place." - Perry Nickelston "There is an emotional component to every type of chronic illness and pain as well as every barrier in fitness and performance. Sometimes people just get can't get out of their own way and that's when they start to beat themselves up about it. So, when you remove that barrier, a person's life can completely change. They no longer feel the pain and can break through a plateau." - Perry Nickelston "When you understand how to read the body, there will be tell-tale signs about their health such as the eyes and the face. People who are under a great amount of stress will have a lot of inflammation. You can see it in the eyes if they're red and the pupils are wide and locked in fight or flight mode." - Perry Nickelston "There's so much sickness and illness along with autoimmune disorders in the world and it's only getting worse. Why is this happening? It's happening because our bodies are becoming inflamed by the world that we live in. That inflammation begins to take a hold of us even when we don't know it's there." - Perry Nickelston Links From Today's Show: Dr. Perry Nickelston Facebook Twitter Instagram YouTube LinkedIn Google+ Stop Chasing Pain Official Website SCP Podcast Primal Movements Chain Rocktape products Rockstock 2018 Spartan Races Gray Cook Movement Head Strong by Dave Asprey 7 Kefir Benefits and Nutrition Facts that Boost Immunity & Heal the Gut Our Top 10 Favorite Kefir Beverages...and One You Can Even Make at Home Serotonin Foods and Mood Disorders WFR #084 - Dr. David Perlmutter WFR #137 - Dr. Tim Brown About Dr. Perry Nickelston: Perry Nickelston, DC, NKT, FMS, SFMA, is a Chiropractic Physician with primary focus on Performance Enhancement, Corrective Exercise, and Metabolic Fitness Nutrition and trained fromThe American College of Addictionology and Compulsive Disorders.
