Did you know that our genes can tell a story about our predisposition to OCD and addiction? Well, our genetic makeup isn't our destiny, but rather a blueprint that can be influenced by our environment. It's fascinating to think that we have the power to turn certain genes on or off! In today's episode of The OCD Whisperer Podcast, we are excited to welcome Dr. Evelyn Higgins, a trailblazer in understanding the intricate dance between our genes and our environment, especially when it comes to OCD and addiction. During our conversation, we talk about the genetic and environmental aspects of OCD and addiction. We explore how personalized lab work can reveal unique physiological traits and genetic predispositions that contribute to these conditions. Dr. Higgins emphasizes the importance of understanding one's genetic makeup to make informed choices and potentially alter the expression of genes through environmental changes. We also discuss the affordability and accessibility of personalized treatment, the potential for insurance coverage, and the services offered by Wired Bio Health. In This Episode [02:26] - Genetic standpoint of OCD and addiction [03:29] - Impact of environmental factors on gene expression [10:52] - Correlation between OCD and addiction [14:19] - Importance of personalized lab work [16:47] - Overview of traditional approaches to treating OCD [18:58] - Affordability and insurance coverage [20:43] - Accessibility and flexibility of treatment [22:44] - Advancements in mental health and addiction treatment [23:41] - The future of mental health screening Notable Quotes [02:38] "We're not healthy one day and sick the next, or healthy one day and addicted the next. It's all the living that we do in between that brings us to either end of that spectrum." - Dr. Evelyn Higgins [02:50] “From a symptomatic standpoint, there are so many correlations that we see that bring somebody towards the addiction side of things, be it anxiety, be it depression, be it agitation.” - Dr. Evelyn Higgins [18:35] "There are so many more advances that have been made that people are not educated on and aren't using just because they don't know." - Dr. Evelyn Higgins Our Guest Dr. Evelyn Higgins is the founder and CEO of Wired Bio Health (formerly Wired for Addiction). Dr. Higgins is not only an expert in the epidemiology of addiction but also a certified addictionologist, a diplomat of the American College of Addiction Allergy and Compulsive Disorders, and a diplomat of the American Board of Disability Analysts specializing in pain management. Kim and Kezia speak with addictionologist Dr. Evelyn Higgins from Wired for Addiction. Dr. Higgins is an expert in the epidemiology of addiction. If you could identify the brain chemicals that cause alcohol or drug addiction in your brain, then what would be the next step? What if you could start at a young age by creating different habits if you had the scientific knowledge to prepare you to do so? What gets a person to that place of addiction? If you actually knew that you didn't have to stay in that dark place, would you? If you could have had your DNA tested at a young age to see if you were predisposed to substance use disorder, would you have done so? If you knew what lay ahead, what would you have done differently? "Does your DNA predispose you to substance abuse? New research suggests that addiction is a biological condition. How would knowing your risk for alcohol or drug dependency impact your choices? Dr. Evelyn Higgins, CEO & Founder of Wired For Addiction®, is an international expert in the epidemiology of addiction. She believes the way we perceive, treat, and manage mental health and substance use disorders needs to evolve to reflect what we now know about human physiology. Technological advances have given us the genetic tools to identify the biomarkers of addiction. So why aren't we using that knowledge to improve treatment protocols? We can change the lens through which society views addiction by acknowledging its biological components and promoting science-based solutions." Founder and CEO of Wired For Addiction®, Dr. Evelyn Higgins is a recognized international expert in the epidemiology of addiction. As a Certified Addictionologist, Diplomate of the American College of Addictionology and Compulsive Disorders, and Diplomate of the American Board of Disability Analysts specializing in pain management, Dr. Higgins has had the honor of advising the U.S. Surgeon General, producing and hosting a Gracie Award winning nationally syndicated health and wellness terrestrial radio program, and serving as a 1996 Olympic Team Doctor and Olympic torch bearer. Today my guest is the Founder and CEO of Wired For Addiction®, Dr. Evelyn Higgins is a recognized international expert in the epidemiology of addiction. As a Certified Addictionologist, Diplomate of the American College of Addictionology and Compulsive Disorders, and Diplomate of the American Board of Disability Analysts specializing in pain management. We are going to talk about understanding the genetic markers of addiction, and how a simple test could identify missing chemicals that contribute to the mental health disorders that lead to addiction like anxiety and depression. Her work is fascinating and I can't wait for you to hear it. But before we jump in, it's time for new resources! I just completed the 12 step workshop last week and the topic was step 12 which is about carrying the message, or in other words, being of service to those who suffer from addiction. I think I've probably shared this before but it's worth repeating. For a lot of people with little kids or constrictive schedules, I would like to offer up a flexible and simple way to be useful, and that is to practice what I call “willingness calls”. It's also a simple way to establish a support system if you don't have one already. A willingness call is simply to find 3 or 4 people that you can reach out to on a regular basis to check in with. You do it when you feel good, because most of us just want to isolate when we feel bad. There's an old saying that we don't rise to the level of our expectation, we fall to the level of our training. It can be a short call, just a hey how are you? Let them share a little bit, then you offer up what is going on in your life and that's it! Pretty soon you are current with several people, and when life get's too “lifey” you are already in the habit of calling, and you don't have to spend a lot of time explaining the back story. You can get right into solution. The interesting thing that happens when you practice willingness calls, is you might catch a friend in the middle of being upset and you can offer support and be of service. Or they might start reaching out to you in a moment when you feel shut down or too sad to call. I've had such amazing experiences over the years of this practice, so I wanted to share this with you too. So that's it! My guest today is Dr. Evelyn Higgins. Founder of Wired For Addiction®, Dr. Evelyn Higgins is a recognized international expert in the science of addiction recovery. She is a Certified Addictionologist, Diplomate of the American Board of Disability Analysts specializing in pain management, and Diplomate of the American College of Addictionology and Compulsive Disorders. Dr. Higgins has had the honor of advising the U.S. Surgeon General, producing and hosting a Gracie Award winning nationally syndicated health and wellness radio program, and serving as a 1996 Olympic Team Doctor and Olympic torch bearer. With 35 years in practice, Dr. Higgins has specialized in the clinical application of the neuroscience & epigenetics behind mental health complexities and currently finds herself at the nexus of epigenetics, neuroscience, and health. Exploring the Camino de Santiago and the Science of Addiction Recovery with Dr. Evelyn Higgins Connect with people from all over. The Camino de Santiago, or the Way of Saint James, is a 500 mile pilgrimage across Spain that has been completed for centuries. It is a journey that has been taken by many people seeking spiritual enlightenment, physical challenge, and a connection with people from all over the world. Dr. Higgins was inspired to undertake the Camino de Santiago after reading Paulo Coelho's book, The Alchemist. She left her practice for 32 days and walked 800 kilometers across Spain. She was determined to find out what the Camino had to offer her. On the Camino, Dr. Higgins was amazed by the connection she made with people from all over the world. She was approached by people from different countries and languages, who wanted to walk with her. Through conversations with these people, she was able to gain insight into different cultures and perspectives. She was also able to connect with herself and find more clarity in her life. The Camino de Santiago offers a unique opportunity to connect with people from all over the world. It is a journey that can be taken alone or with a group. It is a journey of physical and spiritual challenge, as well as a journey of self-discovery. For Dr. Higgins, the Camino de Santiago was a life-changing experience that allowed her to connect with people from all over the world and gain a greater understanding of herself. Find yourself on the Camino. Dr. Higgins encountered many people on her journey, some of whom she would never see again. Despite this, she was able to form meaningful connections with them. She also encountered a priest who gave her an important message: “You know exactly who you are, but when you're finished, you'll be somebody completely different.” This message resonated with Dr. Higgins and motivated her to reflect on her journey and the people she had met. Dr. Higgins also experienced physical and spiritual challenges during her journey. She had to push herself to the limits of her physical endurance, and she also had to confront her own doubts and fears. She found that the physical and spiritual challenges of the Camino de Santiago helped her to connect with herself in a deeper way. She was able to reflect on her life and her purpose, and she was able to gain a greater understanding of who she was and who she wanted to become. Dr. Higgins' journey on the Camino de Santiago was an incredible experience that changed her life in every way. She experienced physical, emotional, intellectual, and spiritual growth. She was able to connect with people from all over the world, and she was able to gain a greater understanding of herself. The Camino de Santiago is a journey of self-discovery, and it is a journey that anyone can take. It is a journey of physical and spiritual challenge, and it is a journey that can help you find yourself. Addiction is a disease. One thing that Dr. Higgins learned on her journey is that addiction is a disease. She was inspired by the stories of people she met on the Camino and the struggles they faced. She was able to gain a greater understanding of addiction and the struggles that people face when they are trying to recover. She was able to understand that addiction is not a moral flaw, but rather a disease that needs to be treated. Dr. Higgins was also inspired by her own family's struggles with addiction. She was able to understand that addiction affects not only the individual, but also their family and friends. Addiction has a ripple effect and can cause a great deal of pain and suffering for those affected. At Wired for Addiction, Dr. Higgins is working to help people understand the science behind addiction. She is looking at neurotransmitters, hormones, and genetic snips to try to understand why people become addicted and how best to treat them. She is also trying to reduce the stigma around addiction and to show people that it is a disease that needs to be treated. Addiction is a disease and it needs to be treated as such. It is not a moral flaw, but rather a medical condition that needs to be addressed. We need to reduce the stigma around addiction and to provide people with the resources they need to recover. We need to understand the science behind addiction and to provide people with the tools they need to make a full recovery. Dr. Higgins' journey on the Camino de Santiago has inspired her to work to reduce the stigma around addiction and to provide people with the resources they need to make a full recovery. Seek professional help for addiction. It is important to understand that addiction is a biopsychosocial disease. This means that it is not just a psychological issue, but that there is also a biological and social component. People who are addicted to drugs or alcohol may have underlying traumas or undiagnosed conditions that can affect their physiology. It is important to look at the biological and social components of addiction, as well as the psychological aspects. At Wired for Addiction, Dr. Higgins and her team are working to provide people with the tools they need to make a full recovery. They offer a 15-minute consultation at no cost to point people in the right direction for their recovery. They work with individuals, treatment centers, therapists, coaches, physicians, and even the justice system. It is important to seek professional help for addiction. Addiction is not a moral flaw, but rather a medical condition that needs to be addressed. We need to reduce the stigma around addiction and to provide people with the resources they need to make a full recovery. We need to understand the science behind addiction, and to provide people with the tools they need to make a full recovery. Seeking professional help is the first step in the recovery process and it is important to find the right help for you. Multiple perspectives lead to success. One of the most important aspects of seeking professional help is to understand the multiple perspectives that are involved. This is why it is important to find a professional who can understand and appreciate multiple perspectives. Evelyn, a doctor and addiction specialist, is a great example of someone who understands the multiple perspectives involved in addiction treatment. She understands the clinical perspective, but also the personal perspective. She understands that when it comes to treating addiction, it is important to be both a leader and a friend. Evelyn also understands the importance of seeing the person as a whole, rather than just a set of symptoms. She understands that there are multiple facets to a person, and that it is important to take all of these into consideration when treating addiction. Evelyn also understands the importance of looking at the person holistically, taking into account their family and social situations as well as their clinical needs. This allows her to provide the best possible care for her patients. The ability to see multiple perspectives is key to success in any field. It allows us to have a more holistic understanding of the situation, to better understand the needs of those we are helping, and to provide the best possible care. Evelyn's example is a great reminder of the importance of understanding multiple perspectives in order to succeed. Taking the time to listen and understand the different facets of a person can make all the difference in providing the best possible care. --- Why does Movers Mindset exist? The purpose of Movers Mindset is to create and share great conversations with movement enthusiasts. Each conversation feeds my insatiable curiosity, but I share them to turn on a light for someone else, to inspire them, or to give them their next question. In the podcast, I talk with movement enthusiasts to learn who they are, what they do, and why they do it. I'm interested in the nature and philosophy of movement and in exploring themes like independence, self-direction, and human excellence. My interests color each conversation and provide some structure to Movers Mindset. But since I like to take the scenic route, every conversation ends up going somewhere unique. I really appreciate your time and attention, and I don't take it for granted. --- I need your support I want to share more of these amazing conversations, with amazing people, but I'm limited by the cost of the project. Please support what I'm doing. Every dollar really makes a difference. You can make a one-time contribution via Buy Me a Coffee, https://www.buymeacoffee.com/moversmindset …or make a recurring contribution via Patreon, https://www.patreon.com/moversmindset --- Thank you! My personal mission is creating better conversations to spread understanding and compassion. And Movers Mindset is one of the things I do in service of my mission. Drop by constantine.name for my weekly email, my other podcasts, writing and more. The Movers Mindset project grew from conversations I started having as part of my personal journey rediscovering movement. The project started late in 2015, and it was initially simply a web site that shared others' writing. The project grew, and in 2017 I started the podcast. I've worked extremely hard, but none of this would have been possible without so much help from so many people. Cheers! ɕ

There were times in my journey that I thought I'd gone mad and then you find people that make you realise that you're not alone, today's guest has done that for me. Dr Perry Nicholson, who I came across on Instagram about 18 months ago. I have to say, this man just blew my mind. I asked myself why is every doctor not talking like this man does? He's quite phenomenal. Listen in to hear his story and his thoughts on chasing pain. KEY TAKEAWAYSNo system in the body ever works alone, never gets injured alone, never heals alone. There's no such thing as an isolated injury in the body. There's no such thing as isolated healing.you might go to a homoeopath because you have something like gout and you might get a completely different treatment to another person because they're looking at the whole system, what's going on in your body from all different areas.Chasing pain means that you point to where pain is, now it's in my right shoulder today, then can you rub my left hip? So you're just chasing this thing all over the place as opposed to asking, why is the body sending this protective signal? And what does pain mean anyway? So to Dr Perry, pain is a request for change.Dr Perry believes, unfortunately we're thriving, but we're getting in our own camps and we're trying to kill the other tribe. So it's not a communal tribe together and then that's part of the stress response or survival responses. So you stay with what you feel comfortable with and then you don't go near what you don't feel comfortable with. And that's where people become more polarised.Every autoimmune disease is inflammation. It's just manifesting itself in different names for different people. So inflammation is the culprit, but would manifest it as fibromyalgia. Somebody else may manifest it as celiac disease. Because that just depends on your genetic makeup, your history and your vulnerability in your body.Breathing from the diaphragm is so good for your body because it moves your organs around and stimulates your vagus nerve and also increases blood flow in the abdomen. People with vagus nerve issues have poor blood flow to the gut because the signal travels down as well as up. 80% of the signal moves up and 20% moves down. What's the difference between obsessive-compulsive disorder and obsessive-compulsive personality disorder? I'm confused about the terminology, which complicates my efforts to find help for my spouse, who (in my opinion) exhibits a number of obsessive compulsive traits. Can you clarify the difference for me?

If you're feeling stressed, overwhelmed, or uncertain, and as a result you're trying to mentally power through in response, you need to listen to this. We all want to feel and perform at our best. Yet, all of us have had moments where it seems that no matter how hard we try, we're swimming upstream against life's current. Sometimes we feel as if we are struggling just to stay afloat, never mind move ahead. I don't know about you but when that happens, I have often used the strategy of buckling down, working harder, longer, basically driving through sheer force of will. My guest for this episode is Dr. Perry Nickelston. In our conversation he explains the science behind why this approach might be the opposite of what we need to do, to create the results we want. When focusing on performance in any area of our life or work, we need to consider our physiology as much as our mindset. We can work harder, be more disciplined, hustle, and grind. However, when we find ourselves struggling with any of these characteristics it may not be laziness. We need to examine how other variables such as chronic stress, uncertainty, loneliness, lack of sleep, movement, poor diet and other things that biologically influence our inner world, may be impacting how we perform in our outer world. When we fail to appreciate how our environment is impacting brain function, toxicity, inflammation, and a myriad of other biological factors that influence how we feel and perform, it's like driving with one foot firmly down on the accelerator, but the other one steadfast on the brake. I first met Perry years ago when we were both presenting at Filex in Melbourne. I was impressed with his holistic view of wellbeing and optimization of human performance. In this episode he offers a perspective on how aspects of our internal and external environment can have an enormous impact on us. He then shares simple to use practices to help us feel and perform at our best. Lives of the Unconscious. A Podcast on Psychoanalysis and Psychotherapy
Everyone has their rituals that they insist upon observing more or less fastidiously and, if interrupted, would react to sensitively. From adhering to a particular daily routine, say, before an important exam or a date to athletes who cross themselves, put on their lucky socks, or perform some other ritual before competing. Among the so-called obsessive-compulsive disorders there is a set of symptoms that those afflicted must follow by virtue of some inner compulsion, even when they do not want to—and which massively interferes with their ability to enjoy and cope with life, whereby there is no sharp distinction between normal and pathological compulsiveness. Contemporary psychodynamic conceptions have worked out various aspects of obsessive-compulsive disorders and the psychological function they fulfil.
