JT also explains why Florida State's 34-17 win over New Mexico State did little to ease the pressure on Mike Norvell, especially with SMU, Alabama, Louisville, and Miami looming. What does Lincoln Riley need to do to make USC the attraction again instead of relying on opponents like Oregon and Ohio State to fill the Coliseum? Plus, Marcus Stokes' journey from four-star Florida commit to Division II standout and now Memphis quarterback has JT wondering if College Football has found its next Trinidad Chambliss-type breakout story. Connor O'Gara and Jim Dunaway are back for Episode 10 of The Connor O'Gara Show, diving into the biggest debates surrounding how we watch — and remember — college football. ESPN is getting rid of its traditional Bottom Line ticker during college football broadcasts. Is that a welcome change, or will fans miss having scores constantly scrolling across the screen? Connor and Jim discuss the rise of YouTube TV's Quad Box, second screens and the reality that most college football fans are watching Saturdays much differently than they did a decade ago. They also debate whether Week Zero is being wasted. Should college football use the opening weekend to showcase marquee matchups and create a massive television event instead of treating it like a soft launch to the season? Then the conversation turns to ESPN's upcoming six-part Nick Saban documentary. Jim, who spent years hosting Saban's weekly show, shares insight into Saban's approach to player psychology and why the series could reveal a fascinating side of the legendary Alabama coach. Plus, which college football stories deserve their own documentary? The guys make the case for an uncensored look at Cam Newton, Auburn and the chaos surrounding the 2010 national championship season, along with the unbelievable rise and fall surrounding Ed Orgeron and LSU's historic 2019 championship team. Topics include: • ESPN eliminating the Bottom Line ticker • YouTube TV Quad Box and multi-screen football Saturdays • How college football viewing habits have changed • Why Week Zero needs bigger games • Nick Saban's upcoming ESPN documentary • Jim Dunaway's experiences covering Nick Saban • Cam Newton and Auburn's controversial 2010 season • Ed Orgeron and LSU's legendary 2019 championship run If you love college football, SEC football, Alabama, Auburn, LSU and the stories behind the sport, hit the like button, subscribe and join us for more episodes of The Connor O'Gara Show. Butch Thierry is joined by Angelo DePaola, who opens the show with a look at Alabama's growing light-tackle billfish fishery and why September and October could be special months offshore. Capt. Ben Knight of Great Southern Fishing Charters kicks off the reports from Orange Beach, where mangrove snapper have been one of the most consistent late-summer bites around docks, rocks, jetties, bridge structure, and deeper current. He explains why croakers, spots, LYs, and small pogies can outproduce shrimp, and how the same Carolina-rig setup can lead to bonus flounder, redfish, and jack crevalle. Capt. Bobby Abruscato of A-Team Fishing follows with a Mississippi Sound and Dauphin Island report focused on speckled trout, wade fishing, Slick Juniors, popping corks, shrimp activity, white trout, flounder, and redfish. Bobby breaks down why hard bottom, grass, shell, bait, fish slicks, stealth, and boat positioning matter so much this time of year. The episode also includes a sponsor spotlight with Daniel and Ed Bejrowski of Slipski, who talk with Joe Baya about aluminum dock and boat-cover systems built for Gulf Coast conditions. Capt. Kendall Annan of Gulf Rebel Charters closes the show with an offshore report covering red snapper, triggerfish, beeliners, amberjack, grouper, Spanish and king mackerel, cobia, wahoo, dolphin, and tuna prospects, along with what he learns from diving and scouting reefs late in the season. Alabama Football general manager Courtney Morgan is pushing back on the narrative that the Crimson Tide can't—or won't—spend big money on its roster. “We are very cautious and risk averse,” Morgan said while making it clear: Alabama isn't broke. We break down what Morgan's comments reveal about Alabama's approach to NIL, roster construction and player evaluation under Kalen DeBoer. Has Alabama found a more sustainable strategy by investing in players like Keelon Russell, Lotzeir Brooks, Michael Carroll, Dijon Lee and Luke Metz rather than simply trying to outbid everyone in college football? Plus, there's a significant roster development at Auburn. Wide receiver Erick Smith is no longer with the Tigers, leaving Alex Golesh with additional questions about his WR depth just before the 2026 season. Could sophomore Sam Turner emerge as Auburn's surprise seventh receiver? CEO José Muñoz said Europe is one of the most competitive regions on the planet and that every EV credit protects the ICE and hybrid business, while the claimed 30% battery-cost reduction is a planned saving on 2027 models using mid-nickel NCM cells rather than an achieved one.HYUNDAI CLAIMS MORE THAN 600 MILES FOR SANTA FE EREVHyundai's first range-extender EV, the Santa Fe EREV, is due in North America in the first half of 2027 with a claimed 600-plus miles of total range from a battery less than half the size of a comparable EV's, using electric motors for drive and an engine solely as a generator. Production begins in Alabama in early 2027, with Hyundai expecting EREVs to matter more in North America than in Europe, and an Ioniq V EREV planned for China plus a Genesis EREV in early 2027.HYUNDAI PLANS INTERMEDIATE N PERFORMANCE TIERHyundai is creating an unnamed performance tier between N Line trims and full N models, using N powertrains but at lower cost and better suited to daily driving. It sees the high-volume middle ground as a sales opportunity that could also free the flagship N cars, such as the Ioniq 5 N and Ioniq 6 N, to become more track-focused, though no technical details have been disclosed.HYUNDAI SELECTS KALUZA FOR SMART CHARGINGHyundai has named London-based Kaluza its global partner for EV smart charging and vehicle-to-grid services, starting with Hyundai and Kia in the UK and expanding to Australia, with OVO becoming the first UK retailer to offer smart charging through the Kia App. The deal sits within Hyundai Motor Group's AllDayEnergy programme launched in July, expanding existing pilots in Jeju, the US and the Netherlands, with V2G services planned for next year.OMODA 4 SET FOR BARCELONA ESPORTS DEBUTChery brand Omoda will launch its 4.4-metre Omoda 4 compact crossover in Europe at the Valorant Champions Tour EMEA finals in Barcelona from 28 to 30 August, targeting younger technology-oriented buyers, before an Italian debut at the Turin show on 11 September. Europe accounts for more than 40 percent of Omoda and Jaecoo's global sales, and Chery, Europe's second bestselling Chinese automaker in July behind BYD, opened its first European hub and R&D centre in Barcelona in April.VOLVO ADDS SHARED ANIMAL HAZARD ALERTSA Volvo software update lets EX60, EX90 and ES90 cars use sensors and cameras to detect large animals such as deer and sheep, upload the location to the cloud and warn approaching vehicles, including those on the European Data for Road Safety programme, with added alerts for pedestrians, cyclists, roadworks and accidents ahead. Safety chief Åsa Haglund said the newer models' computing power makes this possible but that warnings must be trustworthy, since false positives deteriorate trust in driver-assistance systems.VOLTPOST ADDS CEILING AND SURFACE EV CHARGERSVoltpost has extended its Voltpost Air range beyond lamppost retrofits with ceiling-mounted chargers that lower retractable cables in parking garages and surface-mounted units for walls, pedestals and kerbside sites without poles. It claims installations take hours rather than days and can cut costs by up to 70%, though it has told Massachusetts regulators each charger needs 40A and dual-port units 80A, with some sites requiring power upgrades or a new meter.PLUG-IN SOLAR PANELS LEGALISED ACROSS GREAT BRITAINPlug-in solar panels became legal to buy and use across Great Britain on 27 August, with kits generating up to 800W, meeting up to 20% of a home's electricity use and saving up to £110 a year, after independent safety testing found compliant panels safe under a specification stricter than Germany's. Complete kits are expected to cost around £400–£600 initially and will be stocked by Amazon, Argos, Currys, B&Q, Screwfix and Wickes, with government assuming 15% of households pay for mounting help and 20% need minor electrical work.NIO CERTIFIED USED EVS START AT 26,900 EUROSNio's cheapest certified used EV in Europe costs 26,900 euros without a battery, which buyers instead subscribe to under Battery as a Service at 169 euros a month for 75kWh or 289 euros for 100kWh in Germany and the Netherlands, adding close to 7,000 euros over the remaining warranty for the larger pack. All cars are 2023 or 2024 builds with roughly two years of warranty left, drawn from Nio's own fleet and given full technical, cosmetic and structural inspections, original-parts repairs and no scheduled servicing for six months or 10,000 kilometres.APTERA SECURES UP TO $44 MILLION INVESTMENTAptera Motors has secured a strategic investment of up to $44 million from Shanghai Launch Automotive Technology, or Launch Design, covering fixtures, tooling, testing and pilot production for its first 40 solar electric vehicles at its planned Carlsbad, California site. The company is targeting the start of production in Q4 2026, with first vehicle bodies and chassis expected in October 2026.VESSEV RAISES $A27 MILLION FOR HYDROFOIL PRODUCTIONAuckland-based Vessev has raised $US19 million in Series A and follow-on funding led by Blackbird Ventures to scale production of its electric hydrofoiling vessels, grow its market team and develop onboard software and telemetry. The 2017-founded firm, which launched the 40-nautical-mile VS-9 in 2024 and has since added the VS-12, has delivery agreements in Sydney, Perth and Tasmania and named FlyTahoe as its first US customer, though its first Perth VS-9s only arrive in early 2027 pending classification and regulatory approval.

In the mid-1960s, McDonald's sued a tiny Mobile, Alabama fast-food chain called Colonel Dixie — over golden arches, green sidewalks, red and white trash cans, and a stolen operations manual. Colonel Dixie won on the trademark claim and went on to become a beloved local institution, famous for the Dixie Dog. But the brand still carries a whiff of scandal, because in 1983 its co-founder, Paul Leverett, was convicted of hiring a hitman to murder his wife.Elizabeth "Liz" Leverett was killed while her husband drove their children around Mobile in a carefully constructed alibi. She had decided that week to file for divorce. The case went cold — until a burglary across town led investigators to a pawn shop owner, a stolen diamond hidden in a necktie, and an x-ray taken years earlier. College football is finally here, which means there’s only one piece of preseason business left: putting our predictions on the record. In this episode, we each build a complete 12-team College Football Playoff field, debate the teams that just missed the cut, seed the bracket and play the whole thing forward through the national championship. Along the way, we wrestle with some of the biggest questions surrounding the 2026 season. How many SEC teams can survive the league’s new nine-game schedule? Does the Big Ten get a fourth team? Can the Big 12 produce multiple playoff teams? And which Group of Five contender makes it through a particularly messy race for the automatic bid? There are also some aggressive calls involving Alabama, Houston, New Mexico, Notre Dame and several teams sitting right on the postseason bubble. We work through potential first-round games, playoff paths and semifinal matchups before putting our national championship predictions on the record. Some picks felt safer than others, a few are almost guaranteed to come back and haunt us, and somehow we independently landed in exactly the same place at the very end. Last Call | Jake Coker on Keelon Russell: What Alabama Fans Should Expect From QB1

    The Next Round

Play Episode Listen Later Aug 25, 2026 48:33

Former Alabama Crimson Tide quarterback and national champion Jake Coker joins Mick Gillispie for a deep dive into the latest Alabama Football storylines, led by Kalen DeBoer officially naming Keelon Russell the Crimson Tide's starting quarterback. Coker gives a former QB's perspective on what happens behind the scenes when a coach names his starter, sharing stories from his own private conversations with Nick Saban and Jimbo Fisher. He also explains why Austin Mack still has to prepare like Alabama's starter every single week — because a backup quarterback is always just one play away. The guys also break down Alabama's projected offensive line, why continuity and chemistry up front are so important for pass protection, the latest Crimson Tide injury updates, and the competitive kicking battle between Graham Nicholson and Conor Talty. Plus, Jake and Mick discuss the changing landscape of NCAA eligibility and roster rules, including the possibility of players with NFL experience returning to college football. And it wouldn't be a conversation with Jake Coker without getting off the football field. The guys get into Charles Barkley and Larry Bird stories, Dwight Yoakam, Billy Bob Thornton, the legendary Kenny Chesney Flora-Bama concert, golf, smoking brisket and why Jake would rather spend a weekend with his family than five hours on the golf course. If you're an Alabama Football fan, subscribe for more Crimson Tide news, analysis, player updates and college football discussion all season long.
