Rethinking Assessment & Student Skills Moving beyond “fact recall” to deeper inquiry, collaboration, ethical reflection, and higher-order thinking. Teaching students how AI works (at a conceptual level) so they can use it responsibly and critically. Encouraging leadership traits like empathy, diversity of thought, and clear communication—assets for both human collaboration and AI prompting. Global Perspectives & Data Sovereignty The challenges of relying on global tech giants for AI tools and data security. Understanding AI as a “private commodity,” not a universal public resource—what that means for Australian schools and beyond. Practical Steps for School Leaders Survey staff to find out their AI familiarity, pain points, and training needs. To CONT Global A KKR company for up to $962 million. The sale includes three of the seven phases of what would be the world's largest energy storage facility, compromising 451 megawatts of solar and two and a half gigawatt hours of storage capacity. The three phases are already under construction and will generate more than 1.3 terawatt hours of energy annually. Now, Phil, why is Grinergy removing itself from some of these projects? Is it cash constriction? Philip Totaro: This one's kind of fascinating because this isn't just a simple asset rotation. I think this is more that they have to be able to dump some of their pipeline in order to have some cash on hand to cover operations of existing assets as well as eventually reinvest in their pipeline. But this, normally when you do an asset rotation, you either sell off a small percentage minority stake in your asset portfolio, or you take, some of your projects and sell them off. This is a fairly large deal for a good chunk of capacity that, Contour Global is is going to have as part of their portfolio now, bolstering what KKR's doing with their backing as well. KKR wants Contour Global to start expanding more and it's put them On the hunt for, asset acquisitions like this. So, it's a good fit, but it's an interesting move from Greenergy at this point to really start getting some more cash in the door. Joel Saxum: Aside from the sale here, we're talking, M& A here in Newsflash. I want to focus on this Grenergy's asset rotation target. So they're looking at, they have a target for 2026 and ensures funding for a 2. 6 billion euro strategic plan. That strategic plan is to become a world leader in energy storage, which, I mean, if you've been following anything that we talk about on the podcast, in the last few years, energy storage has become a very important part Allen Hall: A consortium led by APG Asset Management NV and Australian Retirement Trust will acquire Riverstone Holdings LLC equity stake in Pattern Energy. Now, Pattern Energy is currently developing over 25 gigawatts of renewable energy and transmission projects for nearly 10, 000 megawatts across North America, either operating or under construction. Phil, Pattern Energy is a privately held company up to this point, but they are seeking a little bit of money to help with these projects that they have going on, Sunzea being one of them. Philip Totaro: Yeah, absolutely. And the fact that Riverstone Holdings is selling out their stake. They were one of the founding partners along with management for Pattern. It's a big signal for Pattern to be able to take a next step in terms of their growth plan. But also a big deal where, these two pension companies are investment and an investment fund is coming in alongside the Canadian pension plan investment board that also owns a stake along with the pattern managemen...

Kia ora,Welcome to Tuesday's Economy Watch where we follow the economic events and trends that affect Aotearoa/New Zealand.I'm David Chaston and this is the international edition from Interest.co.nz.And today we lead with news commodity prices are weak today as global factory activity slows. And some banks have run out of places to invest their excess cash holdings. But first in the US there were two factory PMIs out for June today and this sector is back at its lowest level since May 2020. The widely-watched ISM one was quite downbeat. It contracted again and by more than expected as softness continues and optimism about the second half of 2023 is sharply weakening. In this survey new orders contracted less in June than in May, but they still contracted. In the internationally-benchmarked Markit factory PMI, the story was similar but new orders fell in that one although to be fair they were recorded higher in May and the decline in June is to a level that matches the ISM version. In both, price and cost pressures are easing quickly now.American petrol prices are quite stable again ahead of their holidays and summer driving season. And we should note that reinsurers raised premium costs for their cover by +50% in many cases on July 1, reflecting the claims cost of climate-related events.Janet Yellen isn't on holiday. She is off to China later this week to keep up efforts to try and normalise relations between the two superpowers. In China, again less negative than the official measure, the Caixin factory PMI for China did not contract in the way the official survey suggested. But it isn't really an expansion either. But this 'good news' is enough to help Kong Kong and Shanghai equities maintain their rise, although the yuan remains under severe pressure.Factory PMIs in Taiwan and South Korea are contracting although not at faster fates than previously in 2023. In Japan they are like China, neither expanding nor contracting.India is the stand-out factory hub at present, recording surging demand and clearly benefiting from 'de-risking' strategies away from China.Hong Kong retail sales were virtually unchanged in May from April in data released overnight. But because the base was so low, they have recorded very large year-on-year gains, especially in luxury goods. A year ago, their tourism sector was in the doldrums. The EU factory PMIs are weak with demand and production sinking further in June.In Singapore, their largest bank, DBS, said that deposits are flowing in much faster than it can invest them so it has had to lay off more than NZ$36 bln to Singapore's central bank, the Monetary Authority of Singapore, as it is “not finding enough opportunities to put the money to work.” They aren't the only ones worrying about future prospects for Singapore. Elsewhere, surplus liquidity is building up in Japan as well.Australian building permits rose sharply in May, driven by the volatile apartment-building sector. The total number of dwellings approved rose +20.6% following a -6.8% decrease in April. By far the largest rises were in Sydney. In Australia it is a different story with house prices turning up, according to CoreLogic analysis. The cumulative +4.1% lift since February comes after a -9.7% decline over the previous ten months. The pace of Annual price declines moderated from -6.8% in the year to May to -4.8% in the year to June. The recent turn up is consistent with the new lending data. And staying in Australia, one of their largest pension funds has slashed the value of its local office property assets by as much as -20% as commercial property woes hit them as one of Australia's biggest landlords. The Australian Retirement Trust, which manages NZ$260 bln of assets, said its local office buildings have seen “material downward movements ranging between 5% to 20%”.Later today, the RBA will review its cash rate target which is presently at 4.10%. Markets expect a +25 bps rise to 4.35% given they have a strong labour market and housing distortions are featuring again. They also have inflation at 5.6% which is well higher than they want. Higher interest rates won't help those commercial property valuations. The UST 10yr yield will start today at 3.86% and up +2 bps from yesterday. The price of gold will start today at US$1921/oz and little-changed from yesterday. And oil prices are a little softer at just under US$70/bbl in the US. The international Brent price is a tad softer too at just on US$74.50/bbl. Low oil prices are worrying producers. Saudi Arabia said that it would extend a cut in oil production of one million barrels a day that it announced in June through at least August, trying to push up what officials view as stubbornly weak oil prices. The Saudis were joined by Russia. The Kiwi dollar starts today at 61.5 USc and only marginally firmer than this time yesterday. Against the Aussie we are little-changed at 92.1 AUc. Against the euro we are similarly little-changed at 56.4 euro cents. That means the TWI-5 is now at 69.9 and fractionally firmer. The bitcoin price has risen from this time yesterday and now is at US$31,011 which is a +1.7% rise and still above NZ$50,000. Volatility over the past 24 hours has been modest however at just under +/- 1.3%.You can find links to the articles mentioned today in our show notes. You can get more news affecting the economy in New Zealand from interest.co.nz.Kia ora. I'm David Chaston. And we will do this again tomorrow.

Welcoming Laurence Marshbaum OAM back to Purposely to share his incredible founder stories. Investment management is all about picking the right stocks to maximise returns, right?! Maybe considering an investors tolerance for risk and diversifying the investments across asset classes and markets. That is also true for experienced Sydney based portfolio manager Laurence Marshbaum and Barrenjoey Capital Partners and their firm Community Capital. Well, it is only half true and alongside financial returns for investors they are fully focused on delivering social impact and providing vital funds for good causes. Established in December 2022, Community Capital invests in private markets at a discounted price and then donates the generated funds to good causes. Causes and social purpose organisations selected by an experienced advisory board with individuals who are close to community issues and philanthropy. Laurence was inspired to act during the pandemic and was looking at ways he could use his knowledge, skills, and experience of the investment profession to do good and deliver funding to the community. So far, they have raised $383M USD/ $550M AUD for the fund and on their way to delivering returns for investors as well as social impact through an unlisted credit fund. Backers for the fund include Australian Retirement Trust, Laurence's former employer, Minderoo Foundation, Legalsuper and MLC Insignia. This is second for purpose organisation founded by Laurence and in June 2022 Laurence received a Medal of the Order of Australia from Lord Governor General David Hurley for his services to the charity sector through his social enterprise 10 X 10 Philanthropy. 10 X 10 operates in 14 cities in 7 countries and has raised over $5 million for early stage and grassroots not-for-profits. Established in 2013, Laurence and two other passionate social entrepreneurs shared a vision that everyone can make a difference by getting involved in philanthropy. Together, Laurence Marshbaum, Nina Skryzynski and Jenny Newmarch saw that professionals like themselves wanted to lead purpose driven lives and give back to their local communities, but lacked the time, knowledge, and framework to make a difference. On the flipside, grassroots for purpose organisations (not for profits) struggle to find financial support and volunteers to sustain their work. Laurence, Nina, and Jenny brought 10 friends to an organised event, with each friend inviting 10 of their friends, thus bringing together 100 people into the room with 3 social purpose organisations in attendance. That night they raised $11,000 for the non-profits, and the concept of 10×10 was born. 10×10 grew organically from Sydney to each Australian capital city as the news of this interesting model of philanthropy travelled. It wasn't long before major cities in the UK, USA, Hong Kong, Canada and New Zealand were established and in mid-2021, Laurence, Nina and Jenny reunited to celebrate the milestone 100th 10×10. Laurence featured on episode #23 of Purposely ‘millennials transforming philanthropy 10x10' --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/mark-longbottom2/message
