The Crimean War: The Truth Behind the Myth (2005). I combattimenti vanno avanti.
I had a chat with Joyce back in Oct 2021 she was well into her nineties it was a pleasure to have a yarn with her. From starting her teaching career at Woods primary school traveling the 12 miles from Balaklava on an a BSA auto cycle and teaching my father Brian Parker along with a few other local notables , with about a 12 students in the scrub, to marrying local Salter Springs farmer Des Ross. Resuming her teaching career later on, and even teaching me . Her father served in the camel core in WW1 so we are going way back in time with this one. A lovely lady who sadly passed away last month. Vale. I hope you enjoy this bit of time travel! Cheers Parks

In tedesco è detto Geigenwerk. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/corgiov/message

When the United Kingdom joined forces with Turkey and France to declare war on Russia in March 1854, Jamaican-Scottish nurse Mary Seacole decided her help was needed. When the British War Office declined her repeated offers of help, she headed off to Crimea anyway and set up her British Hotel near Balaklava. The British Hotel, which opened in March 1855, was a combination general store, restaurant, and first aid station, and the British soldiers and officers came to love Mary and call her “Mother Seacole.” Joining me in this episode to help us learn more about Mary Seacole is historian and writer Helen Rappaport, author of the new book, In Search of Mary Seacole: The Making of a Black Cultural Icon and Humanitarian, which will be released in the United States on September 6, 2022. Our theme song is Frogs Legs Rag, composed by James Scott and performed by Kevin MacLeod, licensed under Creative Commons. The episode image is a photograph of Mary Seacole from an unknown source, believed to be dated around 1850; it is in the public domain. The Charge Of The Light Brigade (1854) is a famous poem by Alfred Lord Tennyson. It is about, among other things, the valor of soldiers and the tragic loss of life in futile war engagements. The war is the Crimean War (1853-1856) which Russia lost against a coalition of France, United Kingdom, the Ottoman Empire, and Sardinia. The battle is Balaclava, 25 October, 1854. The Light Brigade (United Kingdom) comprises cavalry officers and soldiers, mounted on smaller unarmored light fast horses and armed with sword and lance. Mobile and speedy, they were primarily intended for skirmishes and reconnaisances. They were ordered against a near impregnable Russian line of cannon, infantry, and cavalry. Tennyson wrote his poem after reading in The Times (14 November 1854) an account by war correspondent William Howard Russell of the tragic courage and tragic deaths caused by a miscommunication among commanders in the Crimean War. Forty years after its publication Rudyard Kipling wrote another poem about the parlous condition of survivors of the men of the Light Brigade, The Last Of The Light Brigade (1890). Much later (1885?) Tennyson wrote a not-nearly-so-well-known poem, The Charge Of The Heavy Brigade (recorded here but omitting the Prologue and Epilogue). The Heavy Brigade rode large heavy horses; the men wore metal helmets and fought with cavalry swords; they were intended as a close combat shock force. Both heavy and light brigades fought in this battle. Part 1 of this work contains all three poems and closes with a recording made in London in 1890; trumpeter Martin Landfrey plays the charge he sounded at the Charge Of The Light Brigade. Part 2 of this work contains an excerpt from Russell's book narrative (not the newspaper articles) of the battle. Part 3 of this work is an excerpt from The London Gazette (12 November 1854) , the official government publication in which important announcements were recorded (think the US Congressional Record). Here we read two reports of the battle from the commander of the Army (Lord Raglan) to the British War Department (The Duke of Newcastle). The notice also contains reports from three of Lord Raglan's sub-commanders, Lord Lucan commanding the Cavalry Division; General Colin Campbell; and General De Lacy Evans. In this podcast Harpo and RJ discuss The Charge of the Light Brigade, known probably as one of the worst blunders in military history. From the William Howard Russell reports to the Times Newspaper, Lord Tennysons famous poem, through to the deep analysis by Harpo, re-think the Battle of Balaklava, which occurred on the 25th October 1854, at 11am, and will forever by synonymous with The Charge of the Light Brigade. Never in the history of British military history will there be a tale of super courage and heroism by the common man, fatally mixed with the foolish arrogance and unprofessional leadership by aristocratic commanders. It has to be heard to be believed. Further reading: Reminiscences of Crimean Campaigning - by R S Farquharson The reason why - by Cecil Woodham-Smith Louis Edward Nolan - by H.Moyse-Bartlett
