Dr. Steven Stein: Resilience, Grit…Or Hardiness? Which Helps Your Culture More?

Recently, we've heard a lot about resiliency, the ability to bounce back from challenge, and grit, that ability to grind away and never give up. But we've heard less about hardiness. It turns out hardiness enhances resilience, promotes personal and professional growth, and creates a more adaptive organizational culture.Today, Dr. Steven Stein and I talk about hardiness and how it differs from both resilience and grit. He breaks down five key components of emotional intelligence and discusses how emotions impact our ability to make (or not make) good decisions. Dr. Stein offers the three C's of Hardiness and how to improve hardiness to create a more resilient, healthy, and adaptive culture that impacts your bottom line. To access the episode transcript, please search for the episode title at www.TheEmpathyEdge.comKey Takeaways:The concept of hardiness breaks down into the 3 Cs: commitment, challenge, and control. If your goal is overly ridged or too narrow, it can become detrimental and paralyzing. Resilience and hardiness definitely overlap. Where the overlap is, we see continuous improvement and forward motion. When you balance emotionality with rationality, you can make better decisions, We call that wisdom."Hardiness means I can withstand the difficult situation and I can still deal with you (as a person), I can bring you along and make you stronger, and make the organization stronger." — Dr. Steven SteinFrom Our Partner:SparkEffect partners with organizations to unlock the full potential of their greatestasset: their people. This week on the Millionaire Car Salesman Podcast, Sean V. Bradley goes international with Marcos Lima, a Pre-Owned Sales Manager in Winnipeg, Canada. What is the best mindset for Salesmen and women to have? How can new salespeople in the automotive industry start building their book of business? Marcos Lima breaks down how car salesmen and saleswomen can go from recruiting to developing their own brand and social media presence to market themselves to the masses. Managers can't let the sales team skate by on excuses, but managers also have to change their perspective and remember, “People aren't disposable.” Listen in for more tips on making your dealership more attractive to potential new employees and strengthening your current sales team.   About Marcos Lima Marcos Lima grew up in Brazil and has been working in the automotive industry pretty much since he moved to Winnipeg, Canada, back in 2015. As a newcomer with a foreign Law Degree, Marcos found it challenging to find a job. Before landing his first job as a salesman for a local pre-owned dealership, after a couple of months of looking around, he worked for a carwash for a few weeks. Marcos landed his first salesman job and went on to sell over 100 vehicles before he was promoted to Sales Manager in my first year, where he stayed for 3 years. Marcos was then invited to work for Murray Jeep Ram Winnipeg as a Pre-Owned Sales Manager and has been there since May 2018. Marcos recently accepted a post-graduation course with Canadian Dealer Academy that will lay the ground for a future GM position (similar to NADA in the US). Marcos may not be a millionaire yet, but the auto industry has allowed him to go from minimum wage to six figures   About Murray Jeep RAM Winnipeg Murray Jeep RAM Winnipeg has been around since 1926, the Murray family has been selling vehicles to families throughout Canada. It started with one dealership in a small town in Manitoba and has grown to become the largest family owned and operated dealer group in Canada with 31 dealerships from Coast to Coast. In this episode, I speak with who I believe to be one of the most incredible leaders in our country. Terry Paul is the Chief of Membertou First Nation in Cape Breton Island/ Unama'ki, a position he has held since 1984. During this time, Chief Paul has guided his community and administration into one of the most open and efficient First Nation communities in the country. Chief Paul has served on numerous boards and task forces and is one of the original founders of the National Aboriginal Capital Corporation Association (NACCA), which started out as seven Aboriginal corporations and has grown to over 50 Aboriginal financial institutions across the country. He has achieved many inspiring accomplishments in his current role, including doubling the land base for the community of Membertou and increasing the employment rate within Membertou to nearly 80% in the community. To change their community, the Chief and Council started restructuring the band's administration, adopting the principles of efficiency and openness from the corporate world. Membertou became transparent with its finances and aggressively pro-business, seeking opportunities wherever they appeared. On March 7, 2019, Chief Terry Paul announced that Membertou Development Corporation was awarded the designation of one of Canada's Best Managed Companies, and this past year in 2021, the remarkable four-decade-long transformation of the community reached a new milestone with Membertou's co-ownership of the largest shellfish producer in North America, Clearwater Seafoods. Chief Paul led the $1-billion deal to buy the Halifax-based company on behalf of seven Mi'kmaq First Nations along with Premium Brands Holdings Corp., a specialty food company based in B.C. Throughout all of this growth and change, Community has always been at the heart of everything they do in Membertou. Community drives decision-making, thought, and most importantly, action. Chief Paul is a hardworking and gutsy leader. His determination, vision and bold leadership have helped create one of the most prosperous and forward-thinking First Nation communities in our Country. I know this conversation will leave all of you feeling touched, encouraged and inspired to make a difference in your own community or organization.

There is a rising trend in vaping and other recreational uses of cannabis since the Government of Canada announced that it would be legal in 2018. Many experts expect this trend to continue to rise when people feel safe to come out as users.   This legislation poses a challenge to employers that need to be understood and addressed. Yet when the foremost authority on people matters, the Human Resources Professionals Association, surveyed employers last June, only 11% of the companies they spoke with had a policy in place to address medical marijuana. And a whopping 45.9% did not believe their existing policy adequately covered any potential workplace issues that might arise with the legalization of recreational marijuana.   My guest today is Hilda Gan, who is the Founder and Chief People Officer of People Bright Consulting. But calling it an agency doesn’t do it justice.  They are out to change the world through the relentless pursuit of awesome. In this episode, we discuss his unlikely rise through grit, persistence and continuous hustle to build one of the most envious companies, his determination to succeed by outworking and outsmarting his competition, his unusual practices to attract the best and brightest talent, and why most organizations today are struggling to adapt because of outdated leadership models. All this and more on today’s episode. Now, That’s Unusual. About Leerom Segal Entrepreneur, humanitarian and philanthropist Leerom Segal is the co-founder and CEO of Klick Health, the world’s largest health agency. He has been named to PROFIT Magazine’s Hall of Fame as the youngest CEO to lead a PROFIT 100 Company and earned the titles of Ernst and Young’s Young Entrepreneur of the Year and Business Development Bank of Canada’s Entrepreneur of the Year. Segal is also co-author of the bestselling book The Decoded Company: Know Your Talent Better Than You Know Your Customers. His story is anything but usual. Segal launched his first company at age 12 and was named CTO of Motion Works Group by the time he was 16. Klick launched in 1997 as a scrappy technology company. Under his leadership, it has grown to be one of the world’s largest and most sought-after independent creative health agencies. But calling it an agency doesn’t do it justice. They are out to change the world through the relentless pursuit of awesome. Known for his unconventional business method, Segal utilizes a data-driven, talent-centric approach to management at Klick, and the company has been recognized by the World Economic Forum as a Global Company to Watch, as well as one of Canada’s 50 Best Managed Companies, 50 Best Employers, Most Admired Cultures and Best Workplaces. Through the Klick Foundation, he and his fellow ‘Klicksters’ have donated over $1.6M to a wide range of charitable initiatives around the world. Key Interview Takeaways If a company can get the culture right, success comes naturally. When talent thrives, clients are happy and they reward the business with loyalty and growth. Embark on the ‘relentless pursuit of awesome’ by asking how to inoculate against the status quo and to build a culture where people understand that whatever greatness was achieved yesterday, it’s no longer good enough. Give talent an intelligence advantage through personalization. Leadership at Klick realized that successful apps take time to understand the customer and personalize based on individual needs, yet businesses remain beholden to one-size-fits-all solutions. They developed their own operating system, Genome, to make tech tools function as a coach and eliminate elements that weren’t saving time. This allows data to act as a ‘sixth sense,’ aiding in decision-making rather than informing after the fact. Team members need more time in a ‘flow state.’ To achieve high productivity, Klick rejected email because it is “a great way to let others reprioritize the day.” By drastically reducing internal email, staff has more time to work uninterrupted. Ecosystems will prevail over hierarchies. At Klick, decision-making doesn’t move up and down the hierarchy. Even promotions are democratized so that team members have more control over people they are going to be working with. Focus on the client’s best interests to achieve long-term success. Klick rejects the traditional agency model because it focuses on optics rather than outcomes and preserves inefficiencies for financial gain. Segal contends that when there is an alignment of interests...

"Travel can transform communities and lives around the world... Imagine if we got to a place where people can go on holidays as their way of giving back." - Bruce Poon Tip I’m excited to bring on the show a figurehead in the world of travel whose passion — which is not unlike mine, or many of the prevailing motifs of this show has actually influenced the global perspective of what’s possible through the act of travel. Bruce Poon Tip is the CEO of G Adventures, the world's largest independent tour operator — doing over 1,000 small group experiences for over 100,000 travelers a year across all seven continents.  They’ve been named by National Geographic Adventures as the best ‘Do It All Outfitter’ on Earth, and are among the Top 100 Employers and 50 Best Managed Companies. They’re also champions of sustainable and responsible tourism which I’m sure we’ll get into. More importantly, perhaps — is what they believe about the importance of travel. On their website, it says — “If you share a lust of life and have an insatiable curiosity about truly experiencing the world we live in, then join us and embark on a quest for the extraordinary.” What we cover: How an independent trans-Asia trip inspired the idea for a travel business that eventually became GAdventures. How Bruce realized the opportunity for a new form of travel, over “tourism”, back in 1990. What Bruce thinks will be the future of travel, and his dream for the travel industry to aid global poverty Bruce’s perspective on purpose-driven travel. What Bruce’s book on business, Looptail is about. Why GAdventures waited 22 years to launch tours in Australia.
