He was included in The Times list of Britain's top 50 post-war writers in 2008. Described as "the people's laureate" by the Birmingham Mail, Zephaniah drew on his lived experiences of incarceration, racism and his Jamaican heritage to encourage a wide range of audiences to engage with his creative works. His second novel, Refugee Boy, was the recipient of the 2002 Portsmouth Book Award in the Longer Novel category. For over a century, 19th century criminal history has been dominated by a single name. With his murders so violent, his acts so senseless, his victims so vulnerable and his legacy so profound, Jack the Ripper is as synonymous with Victorian London as the Queen herself. But whilst Jack was busy ripping, there was another series of murders being carried out that were equally as gruesome, executed by a killer equally as mysterious and whose story shared all the same traits of the Ripper, though despite it all, it is a story that has forever remained in the shadow of Jack, whose reign of terror consumed everything in its path, relegating all other mysteries to the back pages, for well over a hundred years. On Sunday April 18th 1943 four boys head off on a boys-own adventure into Hagley Woods. A day of poaching birds eggs soon turned macabre, however - with the discovery of a skull in an elm tree. In this Halloween Tale we discuss a few of the possibilities around the poor Jane Doe, known to history simply as ‘Bella'.      Sources this week - Oh boy… I wrote this as a blog post years ago, after a YouTube video on the tale caught my eye. I thought that video was a Rob Gavagan episode, but if so he's since taken it down. Next most likely YouTuber? The remarkable Cayleigh Elise - not that you could confuse the two YouTubers, but they were my go to's at the time for True Crime. A few years back Cayleigh found the weight of her own content became too much for her - and scrapped her entire channel. This Unexplained Mysteries episode is also a likely source.  This led me to several newspaper articles, like this one in The Independent, which is paywalled. This fantastic piece in the Birmingham Mail is a source, and well worth a read …. And several others, lost to my inattentiveness.  This Crimereads article is, I'm 99% sure a source. As was 100% this article in The History Press.  Josef Jacobs dot info is well worth checking out, not just for info on Jacobs, Jack Mossop and Clara Bauerle, but so much else besides with WW2 espionage leanings.    The blog post of the episode is here. Support the show on Patreon for just $2 US a month and get access to exclusive content. I'm currently revamping, and will be dropping re-recorded bonus content weekly for the next two months. November 1 I'm dropping a short tale on The Hammersmith Ghost.       Please leave a like and review wherever you listen. The best way you can help support the show is to share an episode with a friend - Creative works grow best by word of mouth. I post episodes fortnightly, Wednesdays. Tales of History and Imagination is on Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest and Instagram. The show has a YouTube Channel, largely for Audiogram advertisements.        Music, writing, narration, mixing NORMALLY all yours truly. In this episode, however, I use my own quick takes on Glenn Miller's Moonlight Serenade (Miller + Mitchell Parish) Bless ‘Em All (First performed by George Formby, probably written by Fred Godfrey and Robert Kewley) And the WW2 drinking song Kiss Me Goodnight Sergeant Major (Art Noel and Don Pelosi)… I had planned to throw together a version of Lili Marlene, and White Cliffs of Dover… but I ran out of time… The rest of the music is all mine.  For more information on Simone click here.

Veteran business journalist Jon Griffin joins Safaraz Ali for a journey down memory lane and a look to the future. Jon, who spent many years as Business Editor with the Birmingham Mail, reflects on changes that have seen the business landscape change almost beyond recognition.Their conversation considers how Birmingham and the West Midlands has coped with the move away from heavy engineering to a more technological and service based economy.Jon has covered many big business stories during a long career but when asked which was the biggest he has no doubt that it was the demise of Austin Rover that at one time employed 10,000 people in well paid jobs at the plant in Longbridge. The site in south Birmingham has now been transformed into a retail park and housing development. It is a story that has happened in many cases with well paid work replaced by largely poorly remunerated and insecure jobs. With the exception of niche market car maker Morgan in Malvern, there are now no British owned car makers in the region. Jaguar Land Rover is a major employer but will they stay in the West Midlands?Safaraz talks about the growth in financial services with some big financial institutions like HSBC and Morgan Stanley coming to Birmingham. The two men consider if this is the way forward and whether manufacturing in and around Birmingham will become something people will only read about in history books? But perhaps all is not gloom and doom and a new style high technology manufacturing will come to replace what has gone before, providing skilled work for people from the area.Jon talks about his work now as a business journalist writing for a number of magazines and specialist publicatio‘An analogue mind in a digital world'Journalist Jon Griffin, who was for many years Business Editor on the Birmingham Mail, talks with Saf about how his profession has changed. At the end of his newspaper career Jon described himself as someone with ‘an analogue mind in a digital world.'The conversation talks about the decline of print journalism and the expansion of online and digital.Saf and Jon consider the growth of the ‘citizen journalist' and to what extent that has left people without the professional journalism that holds the establishment to account.Jon is a passionate believer that democracy needs high quality journalism and that without it we all suffer. The two men talk about ‘fake news,' the consequence of the growth of social media and platforms like Facebook and Twitter. It is a world in which people can write as they like without any concern for accuracy or balance, in which issues like the laws of libel do not apply.Jon describes this unregulated media environment as ‘the wild west.' The two men consider how things can be made better and if in order to do this platforms need to be made responsible for content in the same way that a traditional newspaper editor is.Safaraz admits that he is a regular user of social media and believes it has a role although there is a need to be careful what you believe and do not believe.Jon looks back on his career with fondness. ‘It enabled me to meet people and go places that would otherwise have not been possible and no two days were the same.'He describes himself as a ‘dinosaur' and is sure young journalists today don't have as much fun as he did as they chase ‘clicks' whereas he tracked down big stories.

Warning: This week's podcast episode features news articles which discuss suicide and mental health. In this episode we have a slightly different format than our usual weekly pod. Don’t worry, we’ll still be talking about doom and gloom in tech and society in our constant search for glimmers of hope. But, we’re focusing specifically on data, because this month’s event is a collaboration with the excellent people at Open Data Manchester. So we’ll be talking about data being used to identify keywords that help identify those at risk of suicide, how data is used in the media and whether there’s a conflict between making things open and commercial viability.  Joining host Sophie Walker are TFGL team members Hera Hussain and Greg Ashton, along with Open Data Manchesters ‘s Sam Milsom. And we have guests, plural! Pete Sherlock, Assistant Editor at the BBC Shared Data Unit. In 2015, he was tasked with setting up a unit to provide innovative data-driven content for the website. The unit went from strength to strength, producing a series of original news stories and features that resonated with the BBC’s online audiences. And we have Annie Gouk, Deputy Editor of data and multimedia at Reach, whose titles include the Mirror, Manchester Evening News, Liverpool Echo and Birmingham Mail. She uses data every day to write national and local news stories as well as being the host of The North in Numbers - a stats based podcast that uses data to get to the heart of issues that affect the North. This week’s topics: Stat of the week:  4 words and 1 emoji that can signify someone is a suicide risk Charity/media news of the week: Ex-love island contestant Molly-Mae to donate proceeds from new fashion line to Mind following the death of Caroline Flack Are the public hypocrites when calling for greater protections for public figures: And an interesting perspective Rant/Provocation... of the week? It has become something of a received wisdom within the present day that the mainstream media exist as the pinnacle of what is possible in sports journalism. Whilst it is not in our interest to reject this assumption, here at A Team of John O’Sheas we believe that some of the most perceptive insight regarding the top teams in the country comes from the fans themselves. In the course of this podcast series, we will be bringing together some of the most influential fans from across the Premier League to give you the low-down on the teams that they watch week in, week out. We’ll look back over the season just gone, try to get a handle on the transfer activity that rumbles on through the summer months, and look forwards to the next season which, as always, seems to creep up on us with ever increasing speed. No one really knows where West Bromwich is. If the Premier League table is anything to go by it is probably slap-bang in the middle of the country. Obviously, the clichés about West Bromwich Albion are legion: we could mention the pathological need to obtain 40 points and no more, their seemingly endless supply of aging centrebacks or their baseballed-capped manager who has his own unique style of football: Pulisball. This is mean-spirited, though, especially given the remarkable nature of what the club has achieved in recent years. Of course, to suggest that West Brom’s place in the top division of English football is not justified would be to ignore the clubs long and illustrious history. One of the 12 founding clubs of the football leagues, the club has only sunk into the third tier for a short period in the 90s. What is so extraordinary about the clubs is the manner in which they have kept their place at the top table of English football in the last decade where money has become everything. More recently, this has everything to do with the inventor of Pulisball – Tony Pulis. Taking charge in 2015, last season Pulis managed to drag the club into the top half of the table despite having only spent the paltry sum of £22.5 million. But does this 10th place finish represent the ceiling for the Baggies? Or can Pulis get even more out of them next season and push them higher up the table? Joining us on the show today are two legends of Albion fandom: Andy Caulton and Andi Purewal. Andy Caulton, from Burton-on-Trent, has been a Baggies fan since 1970 and unquestionably still wallows in the halcyon days of Cunningham, Regis and Batson. Despite living in New Hampshire for 15 years, he flies home every season to watch West Brom play although he isn’t exactly lucky in that regard: in the last 5 seasons he’s only seen the team score a combined 2 goals! Andy appears regularly on SiriusXM, a national soccer channel in the US and writes a weekly blog on West Brom for the Premier League Panel website. Andi Purewal is from Birmingham and has been a West Brom fan as long as he can remember. A home season ticket holder, he also travelled regularly to away games until last season. Working as a boxing and football correspondent for the Birmingham Mail, his articles have appeared in The Times, The Daily Mail, and The Daily Mirror.
