There's a cannon in most towns. Next to a plaque nobody reads. Families take photos there during the day. Men cruise there at night, cars idling, windows fogged, child seats in the back. That gap is exactly what legacy does.In this episode, Gavin Stephens looks at legacy as a cultural technology — not a tribute, but a selection mechanism. Monuments don't remember everyone. They decide who counts. And once you see that, you can't unsee it in vision boards, retirement plans, factory jobs, productivity apps, and the White House.Topics include: Camus and absurdism, the myth of meritocracy, why retirement is backwards, the self-help industry as hierarchy maintenance, and why making a podcast about not needing to be remembered is not ironic — it's just honest.Park Bench Ontology is hosted by Juno-nominated comedian and Canadian Screen Award-winning writer Gavin Stephens. Equal parts philosophy, stand-up, and cultural diagnosis.Welcome to the Collapse.

THE BOOK OF LOST INNOCENCE Nine dark, unforgettable tales of magic, love, honour, sacrifice and the blood-soaked cost of a happy ending. A queen of the damned will burn the world to find true love. A scarred woman trades her soul for fleeting beauty. A young woman scales a forbidden hill to slay her fears. A loyal warrior risks everything when he falls for the Emperor's bride. And five more haunting journeys where innocence is not just lost...it's torn away. If you love dark fantasy with a heart of tragedy—where fairy tales twist into nightmares and the choices we make define who (or what) we become—this collection is for you. TOPICS OF CONVERSATION The inspiration behind The Book of Lost Innocence and its blend of dark fairy tales, folklore, and myth, all tied together by tragic endings. What “lost innocence” means across the collection, and how the stories strip away naïveté to reveal harsher truths about the world. Human nature at its messiest: morally complicated villains, blurred lines between good and bad, and the danger of believing you are doing the right thing. Why myth and folklore can hit differently than straight horror, especially when readers can pull meaning and parable from the darkness. Glenn Taylor's creative process, from revisiting older stories and shaping them into a collection to balancing prose, screenwriting, and future projects. ABOUT THE AUTHOR Born in Mississauga, I am a writer, creator, and novelist. Best known for co-writing 40 Acres with R.T. Thorne, a post-apocalyptic film set in a future where food is scarce, and a family has to defend their homestead from an organized militia. The film premiered at TIFF 2024 and was widely praised by critics, including The Hollywood Reporter, Variety, and Playback. I've been writing and creating for most of my life. I started in animation and comics, but then shifted to my second love—design. I became a creative director and a business owner. But I never let go of my first love of creating and writing. I published my first book, The Book of Lost Innocence, the same year my film 40 Acres premiered in theatres. The book has won a few awards, including the Independent Press Award and Reader Views in four categories (Short Story collections/Anthologies, Regional Winner, The Autocrit Emerging Writer Award and The Inside Scoop Live Award for Most Innovative Short Story Collection), and 40 Acres has won many awards as well as being nominated for the Canadian Screen Awards for Best Original Screenplay. I love almost every genre, but my favourite is science fiction and fantasy. I don't think I can stop creating or writing. It's a function of my being and something I cannot excise even if I wanted to. So, I might as well embrace it and continue to make incredible, entertaining things for people to enjoy. Personal stuff for me. My mother came out ofan old picture behind my computer a few years ago and typed ‘Mom' on anoutgoing message on my cell phone. I got a haircut the next day. For real.Wendy and Lauren use their character, Emmy, to explore her struggle to makepeace with her dead mother, who keeps hanging around. Hugely funny premise. This is the second collaboration with Wendy and Lauren. Their first, How to Buya Baby.' I relate to that too. Exceptional bonding with my guests. They arepure energy, comedic brilliance, honest, and poised. Beyond the comedy, heavyelements here. They stressed that relationships don't end. Loved theirmentioning Erma Bombeck's quote about wishing she had let the kids sit on thegood couch. Absurdity is funny. I agree. I watched the trailer twice. Preciously funny as Wendy and Lauren are. Andserious too. And brave. Dealing with confronting grief right on. MadelynAlbright came up in the chat. More bravery on their part. They bring on deathdirectly. Our culture avoids it. I know. What a special interview. Hours later, there is still tinnitus in myears, thinking about Wendy and Lauren.” Calvin

Cindy Schwartz started her life in dance when she was barely out of first grade, when her parents arranged for her to perform for patients at the Donald Berman Maimonides long-term care hospital in Montreal. At the time, they felt her passion for dancing should stay just a hobby—but Schwartz believes her late parents would be proud that she's transformed her passion into a decades-long project that culminated in her being named to the Order of Canada on Dec. 31, 2025. Schwartz founded Les Muses, Canada's first full-time performing arts training program for neurodivergent adults, over three decades ago in Montreal. Since then, she has landed her students roles in movies, television and onstage; one even won best Actress at the Canadian Screen Awards in 2014. The Order of Canada recognition came, coincidentally, just days before Schwartz officially retired on Jan. 5, 2026, at the age of 65. She joins North Star host Ellin Bessner to reflect on her achievements and explain how the Canadian entertainment business still has a long way to go to create space for actors, dancers and singers who are persons with disabilities—which includes increased government funding. Kylie and Elliott are joined by Lily Kazimiera—a Toronto-based, Alberta-born picture editor, actor, writer, and filmmaker— for an Unconventional Period Piece Syllabus. The three start with an interrogation on genre, why period pieces connect or do not connect for each of them. In turning to the six films curated by Lily, they consider what it means to create art in times of destruction, consider the fluidity of self in a sumptuous film, feel the radical content and impeccable setting of a miracle movie, get walloped by capital C choices, feel the terror deep in their bones, and consider why messy, human movies often act as emotional exfoliants. The Visual Intonation Podcast welcomes filmmaker Alicia K. Harris, a storyteller who turns quiet moments into vivid emotional landscapes. She joins us from Scarborough, the community that shaped her artistry and continues to pulse beneath every frame she creates. Alicia talks about the lessons that carried her from student sets to national stages, and how early affirmations like the Best Director award at Ryerson helped her believe that her voice belonged in the world. In this episode she traces the path from her first short film Fatherhood to her breakout success with Pick, the film that earned her a Canadian Screen Award and opened new doors across the country. She shares how each project taught her a different truth, from the bruised comedy of Love Stinks to the quiet power woven through All Things But Forget and Maybe If It Were a Nice Room. Alicia explains how she builds characters who breathe, falter, fight, and invite audiences to see themselves without apology. We explore the creative courage behind On a Sunday at Eleven, the film that brought her a second Canadian Screen Award. Alicia reflects on the craft decisions that shaped it, the patience it demanded, and the joy of seeing a personal story resonate with so many viewers. She also talks about stepping into television, directing episodes of Lockdown, The Parker Andersons, Amelia Parker, and Beyond Black Beauty, where she won the award for Best Direction in a Children's or Youth Program or Series.Alicia closes with a look at the mission that fuels Sugar Glass Films, the company she co founded to champion women and marginalized voices. She speaks about mentorship, community, and the responsibility she feels to widen the gate for the filmmakers coming after her. This conversation is a study in artistic intention, a reminder that great work begins with a single truthful idea, and a celebration of a filmmaker who continues to shape Canadian cinema with clarity and heart.Alicia K. The Herle Burly was created by Air Quotes Media with support from our presenting sponsor TELUS, as well as CN Rail, PSAC, and the Canadian Nuclear Isotope Council.Alright, you curiouser and curiouser Herle Burly-ites, there'll be no intro grasping at humour today. I can't compete. Too intimidated. Because our guest on the pod is genuine Canadian comedy royalty: Mark Critch! The co-creator, star and co-writer of the hit CBC series “Son of a Critch” based on his best-selling memoir. For 22 seasons, a cast member and writer of CBC's longest running comedy series, “This Hour Has 22 Minutes.” The recipient of 6 Canadian Screen Awards and three Gemini Awards. A best-selling author, including the aforementioned “Son of a Critch” and “An Embarrassment of Critch's” ... and he's got a new book coming out later this month: “Sorry, Not Sorry. An Unapologetic Look at What Makes Canada Worth Fighting For” -- preorder here: https://www.penguinrandomhouse.com/books/747434/sorry-not-sorry-by-mark-critch/So, we're going to talk to Mark a little bit more about his background and how Canada has always punched above its weight, comedically. And, especially in light of today's climate, I want to have a conversation about political humour and satire. Has it changed through the years? What's its function in a healthy democracy? Does political humour have bigger role to play in what feels like a burgeoning autocracy? Trump pressure and fear got Stephen Colbert cancelled. Kimmel teetered on the brink for about a week. But South Park has been relentlessly attacking Trump and his minions, weekly, and it's never been more popular. Mark's own Trump sketches on “22 minutes” have tens of millions views on Tik Tok. We'll talk about all of that and more.Thank you for joining us on #TheHerleBurly podcast. 2025 marks a breakthrough year for Canadian comedy powerhouse Katelyn McCulloch, whose fearless approach to female-driven comedy has already earned her two Canadian Screen Award nominations and international acclaim. Now, she's capping it off with two major milestones: the highly anticipated season two premiere of her Bell Fibe TV1 hit Everybody's Meg on November 13th, and the return of Shenanigans on November 27th in Halifax at the Cineplex Park Lane (5657 Spring Garden Rd); a bold, joy-filled celebration of funny, feel-good, and female-driven film and television. With Everybody's Meg, the Halifax-born creator has struck a rare chord with audiences: a comedy that's sharp, heartfelt, and unafraid to lean into the messy, awkward truths of millennial life. As the founder of Hey Old Friend Productions, Katelyn has made it her mission to amplify women in comedy on and off stage. That mission comes to life with Shenanigans, the one-of-a-kind comedy showcase and screening series she launched in 2024. Unlike traditional festivals, Shenanigans is more than a screening, it's a community celebration of female-driven comedy, wrapped in glamour, joy, and connection. On screen, her credits include Law & Order Toronto, Pretty Hard Cases, Hudson & Rex, Roll With It, Avocado Toast, and leading roles in films such as Meet the Killer Parents, Bystanders, and many more. Looking ahead, Katelyn is developing multiple half-hour comedy series, including one with Fiasco Global Media, preparing her first feature film, and making a return to the stage in 2026 as Margaret Cavendish in MAD MADGE at Neptune Theatre. Today's episode of the YVR Screen Scene Podcast is both another instalment in our ongoing #IndustryBFFs series AND our season opener! Sabrina is joined in the podcast studio by two powerhouse actresses who are uplifting women in film via their new project, the Liberated Actresses Playground: Aliyah O'Brien and Priscilla Faia. Returning guest Aliyah O'Brien is beloved for her work on Rookie Blue, Legends of Tomorrow, and You Me Her, for her beautiful smile, and her equally beautiful personality. Priscilla Faia is a new friend-of-the-pod but a veteran actress around town. You know her from You Me Her – for which she won a Leo Award for Best Performance in a Music, Comedy or Variety Program or Series – and for Rookie Blue, for which she was nominated for a Canadian Screen Award. In this rambunctious and at times emotional conversation (facilitated by vodka soda and the “airport drinking” paradigm), Aliyah and Priscilla discuss what it means to be a liberated actress, how their friendship has helped them navigate this sometimes unfriendly industry, and why women are stronger when we stand together.
