It's about a Black vampire hunter named Bud Jablonski (Jamie Foxx) who's human, but his gruffness and gifts for hand-to-hand conflict mean he comes across as Blade's down-on-his-luck SoCal cousin. Bud has a complicated history with the vampire-hunters union, the headquarters of which is a strip-mall answer to the hotel in the John Wicks, with its rules, bureaucracy, and fondness for retro technology. The antagonist he faces down, Audrey (Karla Souza), is overseeing a luxury development in the San Fernando Valley, bent on vampire rule via gentrification - a plan shared by the undead villains in Netflix's own 2020 Vampires vs. the Bronx. But there is an element that distinguishes Day Shift from any offering of the week, which is that it features a few genuinely pleasurable fight sequences. Some feature contortionists in ghoulish makeup who bend their limbs in eye-watering ways. The best involve Scott Adkins, a Birmingham-born martial artist and actor whose presence in Day Shift serves as an action shibboleth, a nod to the fact that first-time director J.J. Perry is a working stunt coordinator himself.Adkins is not famous, not in the way that his scene partner Steve Howey might be considered to be after long stints on Reba and Shameless. His most visible role to date is one most people didn't even know he played, taking over for Ryan Reynolds in the final act of X-Men Origins: Wolverine to play a not-quite-Deadpool with prosthetics over his face to make it look like his mouth was sewn shut. But he and Howey, cast as renowned vampire-hunting Armenian brothers who disguise themselves as stereo repairmen, roll up in Day Shift in the kind of entrance that suggests the audience is familiar with the actors being introduced. And a certain kind of geek absolutely will be. While Adkins has been inching toward the mainstream - he'll play a role in the upcoming John Wick: Chapter 4 - the fandom he's built up so far has come from his work in Asia and a slew of effective, bruising features that have mostly bypassed theaters. He's a deity of the direct-to-video realm, proving again and again that you don't need big budgets or a few hundred overworked VFX artists at your beck and call when you're capable of providing the spectacle yourself.Adkins isn't a bad actor, though it's his astonishing physical prowess that sets him apart. In 2006'sUndisputed 2: Last Man Standing, he does a somersaulting kick into a flying roundhouse, flat-out video-game sh*t that director Isaac Florentine captures in full and in slow motion so you can appreciate that it's being done in real life. Adkins is best at rough-and-tumble antiheroes and charismatic villains - he's incapable of playing a character who has not at some point in his life snapped someone's arm in two. He was the antagonist in Undisputed 2, his breakthrough, a sequel to the 2002 Wesley Snipes boxing movie that featured none of the original cast and that was improbably great anyway. Michael Jai White was the star, but Adkins stole the show, and subsequent sequels followed his character, a sadistic MMA specialist named Yuri Boyka whose dominance in the prison's underground fight scene has secured him a measure of status behind bars, on a bloody quest for redemption and meaning.Adkins has made eight movies with Florentine and seven with another direct-to-video martial-arts specialist - Jesse V. Johnson, a fellow Brit whose collaborations with Adkins have a low-rent bluntness that's impossible to dislike. Johnson cast Adkins as a down-on-his-luck dojo owner who takes on a job enforcing loans for a mob boss in 2018's The Debt Collector, an excuse for a half-dozen comedic skirmishes with bodyguards and one good enough to fuel a sequel two years later. But it's the 2019 Avengement (a real word, even if it doesn't sound like one) that's Johnson's magnum opus, with Adkins playing a character out for revenge against the gangster brother who betrayed him, weathering countless prison beatings in flashbacks that seem to just burnish his brutal patina. Johnson, like J.J. Perry, has a background in stunt work, a career path that isn't new but that's led to some of the more satisfying action set pieces in recent years - and not just in the direct-to-video market.Perry did stunts on the first two John Wick films, which came from stuntmen turned bigshot Hollywood filmmakers David Leitch and Chad Stahelski. Netflix's previous gritty action hit Extraction was the directorial debut of stunt coordinator Sam Hargrave, who in addition to Marvel movies worked on Leitch's Atomic Blonde and the aforementioned, misbegotten X-Men Origins: Wolverine. Stunt work is obviously a small world, but there's a reliable tangibility to the fight scenes in these movies that's often missing in bigger blockbusters, where everything has become possible and very little of it looks real. In Day Shift, Adkins and Howey join Jamie Foxx and Dave Franco to invade a suburban house that turns out to be home to a vampire hive. While Foxx shoots up bloodsuckers exploding out of the drywall, Adkins stakes vamps in the kitchen, beheads them with a sword, and fences with a bendy lady who wields knives with her feet. Then, in a move that is pure, joyous excess, he reveals blades hidden in his boots and does a twirling kick through the air for no other reason than that it looks cool. It turns out, there's still value to that - to not just being an actor who trains enough to be able to navigate fight scenes with the help of doubles and camera angles, but to be a performer who's able to do something that seems impossible, and who can also act.
Growing up around the film business, Amy Baer always loved movies and reading. Unsure of what she wanted to do professionally, Amy was certain of one thing. Whatever she chose to do post-college, it had to be something that she really cared about and that excited her as opposed to what she thought she should or shouldn't be doing. Following her instincts and staying authentic to herself, Amy has navigated a successful, joyful and creative career. Amy currently serves as President of Landline Pictures, a label within MRC Film (KNIVES OUT) that makes feature films about and for a 50+ audience. Launched in 2020, its first movie, JERRY & MARGE GO LARGE, starring Bryan Cranston and Annette Bening, was released by Paramount+ on 6/17/22. Prior to Landline, Amy raised a 7-figure development fund in 2012 and launched Gidden Media, one of the industry's only female-led, independently financed content incubation companies. Her first film as a producer was the 2013 hit LAST VEGAS (starring Michael Douglas, Robert DeNiro, Morgan Freeman and Kevin Kline) which grossed $136MM worldwide. She also produced the 2017 romantic drama MARY SHELLEY and the 2019 inspirational true story BRIAN BANKS. Prior to that, Amy served as President & CEO of CBS Films (2007-2011), and spent the previous 17 years at Sony Pictures Entertainment, where she oversaw such hit films as MY BEST FRIEND'S WEDDING (1997), the Oscar-nominated ADAPTATION (2001), S.W.A.T. (2002), SOMETHING'S GOTTA GIVE (2003), and the 2006 holiday hit, THE HOLIDAY. Amy also developed the 2011 Oscar-nominated Sony hit MONEYBALL, starring Brad Pitt. She began her career at Creative Artists Agency in 1988 as an assistant to the late Jay Moloney. Amy has served as Board President of Women in Film since June 2018. What You Will Hear in This Episode: Amy's personal story Trusting your instinct Becoming a book reader at CAA Learning to be a studio executive Developing a script My Best Friend's Wedding Balancing executive life and motherhood Starting a new studio Taking time off and rediscovering her why The differences between being a buyer vs a seller Gen X and making movies for an older audience Being authentic and staying grounded Quotes “I've always been able to access theme and emotion as a way of advocating material.” “The only way to understand good writing is to read good writing and, and to do that, you have to constantly be reading.” “I was extremely lucky that I was surrounded by senior women who had children and were empathetic to the balance.” “I had to deal with the notion that even though I didn't want that job, I was never really in consideration for it because I was having kids and I had to reconcile that reality.” “Launching my own business was the first time in my career that I felt like a grownup because the agenda was mine.” “Gen X are aging in a way that's very much more dynamic than earlier generations.” “A lot of times when you launch a new venture, part of your success early in your lifecycle is luck, literally. “ “If I was someone that always took an opportunity to make a buck, I would probably have a lot more money, but I may not be as happy or as content.” Mentioned: Landline Pictures MRC https://bonniemarcusleadership.com/ https://web.facebook.com/bonnie.marcus/ https://www.linkedin.com/in/bonniemarcus https://twitter.com/selfpromote https://www.instagram.com/self_promote_/ Gendered Ageism Survey Results Forbes article 5 Tips to own the superpower of your age IAMMusicGroup Purchase my book Not Done Yet on Amazon: If you enjoyed this episode of Badass Women Podcast, then make sure to subscribe to the podcast and drop us a five-star review.

Launched in 2020, their first movie, JERRY & MARGE GO LARGE, directed by David Frankel, who did MARLEY & ME, is streaming now on Paramount+. Starring Bryan Cranston and Annette Bening, the film is based on the true story of a married couple who used a loophole in the Massachusetts State Lottery to win $27 million. I watched it with my dad a few weeks ago and it's incredibly fun and heartwarming. While Amy grew up in a showbiz family, she still had to carve her own path. One thing was certain: she did not want to be an actor. During her stint at CAA in 1988 as an assistant to the late Jay Moloney, she discovered the studio executive route. She eventually became President & CEO of CBS Films. She also spent 17 years at Sony Pictures Entertainment, where she oversaw impressive films such as: MY BEST FRIEND'S WEDDING (1997) ADAPTATION (2001) S.W.A.T. Films shot to look as if they are done in one consecutive shot are difficult to film, but films shot in one shot and in real time are a whole other ball game. ONE SHOT uses this technique to create an action film like no other. As you watch the film you are barreling through the twists, turns and explosions right alongside the characters. This experimental film is raw, riveting and a new addition to an ever growing genre of one shot films. The film is directed by James Nunn (Jetski, Tower Block), written by: Jamie Russell and starring Scott Adkins (Ip Man 4, Triple Threat), Ashley Greene Khoury (The Twilight Saga, Bombshell) and Ryan Phillippe (Shooter, Crash).SYNOPSIS: In an effort to prevent a terrorist attack on Washington D.C., an elite squad of Navy SEALs led by Lt. Blake Harris (Scott Adkins) and a junior CIA analyst Zoe Anderson (Ashley Greene) must retrieve a prisoner from a CIA black site island prison. Tensions flare as Deputy Site Manager Tom Shields (Ryan Phillippe) refuses to release the suspected terrorist based solely on Anderson's intel, but when the base comes under attack by waves of insurgents they must band together to complete the mission.Screen Media will release ONE SHOT in theaters and on demand on November 5th, 2021.Here's the trailer:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FODkoNg_j9I

Savage Road: A Thriller by Chris Hauty NATIONAL BESTSELLER Hayley Chill descends even deeper into the dangerous political web of Washington, DC, in this thrilling sequel to the “propulsive, page-turning, compelling” (C.J. Box, #1 New York Times bestselling author) national bestseller Deep State. When a series of devastating cyber attacks rock the United States, Hayley Chill is tasked by the “deeper state” to track down their source. NSA analysts insist that Moscow is the culprit, but that accusation brings plenty of complications with Hayley directing the president as a double agent against the Russians. With increasing pressure on the president to steer him towards a devastating war, it’s up to Hayley to stop the mysterious computer hacker and prevent World War III—while also uncovering some shocking truths about her own life. Magnificently crafted and superbly unpredictable, Savage Road is an edge-of-your-seat political thriller ideal for our times. Biography Chris Hauty was born in San Antonio, Texas, and is a graduate of Reed College. He began his professional writing career with “Don Coyote”, a contemporary interpretation of Cervantes’ “Don Quixote” with Jonathon Lynn attached to direct. Projects in the family film genre followed, including Disney’s “Homeward Bound: Lost In San Francisco”. To broaden and further define himself as a screenwriter, Hauty wrote the original screenplay, “Arena”, a dark, gladiator epic. Subsequent credits include “Moby Dick” at Dreamworks Animation, “Beautiful Killer” at Universal Pictures with Jessica Alba attached, “Land of Legend”, a Viking saga at Walden Media with Renny Harlin set to direct, “Vigilante” at Studio Canal with Ed Burns to star and direct, and “Colosseum” at Icon Pictures, with Mel Gibson to direct. He sold the pitch for “The Eternals”, a supernatural thriller set on a college campus, to CBS Films. Recent produced credits include “Never Back Down”, directed by Jeff Wadlow and starring Djimon Hounsou and “Sniper: Ghost Shooter” staring Billy Zane for Sony Pictures Entertainment. Hauty lives in Venice, California, with his feral cat and a Triumph motorcycle. Deep State is his first novel. Earlier this year Meagan Navarro (Bloody Disgusting), Zach D Roberts (ComicBook.com), and I got to visit the set of 'Hell Fest.' During this set visit, a lot of information was on hand that could be considered a spoiler: who dies, who survives, who the killer is, what weapons our villain uses, etc. If you’re like me, then spoilers take away all the fun from a horror flick. So, we’ve tailored this set visit to be quite spoiler-free. From the highway on this cold winter day, a particular seasonal water park appears to be alive. Lights are ablaze. Bodies are moving to and fro. Fog is building between the pine trees and the various rides. A telescoping boom lift can be seen slowly maneuvering the twisting walkways with its precious cargo of high-powered lighting rigs. Yes, there is life in this park, but not sparked by thrills seekers. The commotion is result of an ongoing film production from CBS Films! Gregory Plotkin, the director of ‘Paranormal Activity: The Ghost Dimension’ and the man responsible for editing 2017’s seminal masterpiece ‘Get Out’ helms the theme-parked slasher, ‘Hell Fest.’ Set amongst the tall pine trees, Plotkin and his team have disguised a cheery waterpark into a believable Halloween-themed event, where not all the scares are manufactured by ghastly props or masked employees.

Blame It On My Youth

Since 2009 there has been three new Star Trek movies, one new series with another four reportedly in development. Yet enthusiasm for the franchise among die hard fans is low. What’s going on? We’ll explore what is going on in Star Trek today in this episode. What's Going on? When it comes to connected TV and film universes, Star Trek was the first franchise to do it. Not Marvel. But that might not happen anymore. And it all has to do with who owns Star Trek. But trying to figure out which corporate entity owns the property can get a bit confusing. And it’s been that way from the beginning. A lot of people think Gene Roddenberry and his production company Norway were the original owners. They weren’t. The original owner was Desilu Studios and in 1968 Paramount Pictures, itself owned by Gulf + Western, purchased Desilu and Star Trek along with it. In 1994, Viacom purchased Paramount for $9.75 Billion! Star Trek was still controlled and operated by Paramount, the franchise essentially had a new owner. This next fact seems unrelated, but it isn’t. In 2000, Viacom merged with CBS Corporation. Interestingly, Viacom was created by CBS back in 1952 as the network’s syndication division. Then it was called CBS Films but was later renamed Viacom. It was spun off into its own company in 1971. Back to the year 2000, and Viacom was then owned by National Amusements. The majority owner of that company was Sumner Redstone. In 2005, Redstone decided to break Viacom apart into two companies, essentially undoing the 1999 merger. The entity known as Viacom became CBS Corporation. It owned all TV and radio divisions, along with Simon and Schuster publishing. CBS would also own all of the television properties, including Star Trek. The head of the new CBS Corporation was Les Moonves. The second company created was a new version of Viacom. It held Paramount studios, MTV and BET networks. Viacom with Paramount, retains the Star Trek feature film library, and according to some, the rights to make new feature films. But the exact terms of the rights, and who can do what are not clearly known. And this is where things get a bit murky. But you needed this background to follow and understand what’s happening today.

#134 Spierig Brothers Interview: Winchester: The House That Ghosts Built Hi, everybody. We're here at the Winchester House, San Jose, California. I've been asked to join the CBS Films team (thank you!) to interview film directors, Peter & Michael Spierig. The new film, titled, “Winchester: The House That Ghosts Built.” was filmed, in part, here at the Winchester house. The film is inspired by the real events, led by Sarah Winchester, heiress of the Winchester Repeating Rifle fortune. Sarah Winchester was told by a reader, a psychic that all the dead killed by the Winchester Repeating Rifle, throughout time, will haunt her for all her life on earth. Sarah Winchester then built this house, famously with doors to nowhere, staircases to nowhere, hallways and entries to nowhere. The film stars Helen Mirren as Sarah Winchester. The Winchester House is famous throughout the world, and we're joined tonight by Michael and Peter Spierig. The film is amazing. Enjoy.

Welcome to Episode #48 of the Zacks Market Edge Podcast. Every week, host and Zacks stock strategist, Tracey Ryniec, will be joined by guests to discuss the hottest investing topics in stocks, bonds and ETFs and how it impacts your life. In this episode, Tracey is joined by Kevin Matras, Vice President of Zacks, Head of the Research Wizard Division and editor of the Options Trader service. Summer is officially over, the kids are back at school, and Tracey and Kevin take a look at the summer box office results and how it impacted the movie studios. It was a summer of big tent pole movies, some good and some bad, and the return of the horror genre to big profits. These Studios Won the Summer Box Office Disney (DIS) ruled the summer box office with over a billion dollars in ticket sales. It had big hits with Captain America: Civil War, Finding Dory and Pete’s Dragon. But that hasn’t helped the stock, which has slid off its 2015 highs. What do Tracey and Kevin think of Disney heading into the end of the year? Can the shares turn around? Time Warner’s (TWX) Warner Brothers came in second with 9 movies that did well, including Conjuring 2 which saw over $300 million at the box office on a $40 million budget. It also had a big hit with the low budget Me Before You, based on a bestselling novel. It was one of the few romantic dramas out over the summer. It brought in $194 million worldwide. Not too shabby considering it didn’t have a single super hero in it. It’s expected to grow earnings by the double digits this year, one of the few media stocks forecast to do so. Comcast’s Universal (CMCSA) hit all the right notes with its big hit Secret Life of Pets and with the latest Purge installment, which brought in $105 million. A Different Tale for These Studios Lionsgate (LGF) was out of the big movie game this summer now that its Twilight, Hunger Games and Divergent series have run their course, although Divergent still may find itself on television. It was relegated to the Specialty Films genre this summer. But it did have a big late summer hit, partnering with CBS Films, with the Texas thriller Hell or High Water. Lionsgate recently expanded it to 1300 screens. It’s made $16.5 million at the box office. One of the summer’s losers was Paramount, owned by Viacom (VIAB). Although it had a modest hit in Star Trek Beyond, it also made Ben-Hur and found the audience wasn’t clicking as much as was hoped with its Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles sequel. Do Kevin and Tracey like any of these media stocks? If so, which ones? Or do they think investors should steer clear of all of them? Tune into this week’s podcast to find out. And if you’re a hardcore movie fan, you can check out Tracey and Kevin’s 2015 media stocks podcast. Did Tracey and Kevin predict last year’s Oscar winners?
