This refund, pending board approval, follows years of scrutiny over Taylor’s collection of over $425,000 in passport fees as personal income. The issue also sparked a Georgia Bureau of Investigation probe and legislative efforts to increase transparency. Taylor’s office has faced additional criticism for severe dysfunction, including a botched software change in 2024 that disrupted court operations. Despite these challenges, Taylor was reelected in 2024. STORY 2: Historic McAfee House Sold for $1, will be Relocated The historic Robert McAfee house, built in the 1840s, will be relocated to Ball Ground, Georgia, after being sold for $1 by Cobb Landmarks to Lee and Brittani Lusk, experienced renovators of historic homes. The Lusks plan to restore the home as a private residence, adhering to historic preservation standards. The move, costing an estimated $75,000-$100,000, with renovations around $200,000, must be completed by May 15. Originally located in Cobb County, the house has significant historical value, including its use as a Civil War headquarters. A preservation easement will protect its historic integrity. Jon Ossoff called on the Federal Trade Commission to intervene and protect veterans from what he termed "claim sharks," who charge high fees for assisting with Department of Veterans Affairs claims. Ossoff, flanked by veterans and representatives from the American Legion, cited instances where these companies exploit veterans, often charging more than the benefits they seek. He attributed this exploitation to the complexities of navigating the VA claims process, which can take months. Ossoff emphasized bipartisan efforts to combat this exploitation, urging the FTC to investigate and penalize such deceptive practices. One veteran, Yolanda Beavers, shared her experience of being asked for exorbitant fees by one of these companies. Legislation has been proposed in the Senate to criminalize unauthorized fees charged to veterans seeking VA benefits, with support from veterans service organizations like the American Legion. STORY 2: Cobb Sheriff's Deputies Save Lives of Two Inmates Deputy David Morris and Sgt. Tyler Johnson of the Cobb County Adult Detention Center recently saved the lives of two inmates who attempted suicide on separate occasions. Morris intervened when he noticed unusual behavior and found an inmate attempting to hang himself with a bedsheet. Johnson encountered another inmate in a similar situation and promptly removed the sheet from around his neck. Both inmates were taken for evaluation and are alive today. The jail provides mental health staff 24/7, and deputies have access to peer support systems for their own well-being. Sheriff Craig Owens emphasized the importance of mental health support for both inmates and deputies, acknowledging the stress of their roles. Chaplains are available to provide spiritual guidance and counseling sessions for inmates experiencing depression. STORY 3: Military Ball Will Support Cobb Veterans Memorial The Cobb Veterans Memorial Foundation is hosting a Military Ball and Gala next month to raise funds for the Cobb Veterans Memorial. With $3 million already raised, they aim to collect an additional $300,000 for the project's first phase. Retired Gen. Jack Keane will be the keynote speaker. The memorial will feature a 120-foot star-shaped sculpture, service walls with branch histories and flags, and photo walls for community contributions. It will also serve as a venue for patriotic events and parades. The event is scheduled for April 20 at the Atlanta Marriott Northwest at Galleria, and tickets are available for purchase.   We have opportunities for sponsors to get great engagement on these shows. Cumberland Community Improvement District (CID) aims to expand autonomous mobility, with plans for an $8 million route connecting Akers Mill Road to Interstate 285. The initiative seeks to connect the community to job centers and provide alternative transportation options. Students found the experience positive, highlighting the potential of autonomous vehicles for future transportation.   We'll be back in a moment.    Break: TEDS – ATL HEALTH FAIR    STORY 6: Notable Women Of Smyrna Discussed in Lecture The Smyrna Library hosted a lecture as part of Women's History Month, focusing on prominent Smyrna women like Dorothy Bacon, Julia Roberts, and Sarah Sentell Scott. Scott, diagnosed with retinitis pigmentosa, founded Cobb Services for the Blind and Low Vision. Max Bacon, former Smyrna mayor, recalled his mother's strength. Linda Keeney shared a humorous encounter her daughter had with Roberts. Scott's daughter, Elaine Davis, expressed pride in her mother's legacy of helping others with vision impairment. The lecture celebrated the contributions of these remarkable women to Smyrna's history. STORY 7: 'A Hot Mess Express': Elections Board Disqualifies GOP Candidate in Cobb Commission Race Political activist Mindy Seger successfully challenged Republican candidate Alicia Adams's candidacy for the Cobb Board of Commissioners District 2 seat due to her residence outside the district according to the "home rule" map. Adams's disqualification was upheld by the Cobb Board of Elections, with the exception of one vote. The home rule map, created by the Democratic majority, is currently in use pending a Supreme Court decision on its constitutionality. Jones and Butler attempted to rob two individuals who subsequently shot them in self-defense. The current agreement sees 19.75% of Marietta's hotel-motel revenue go to the authority, but the city council has voted to defer action on a new agreement until the next mayor and council take office in 2026. The decision could impact the authority's plans for a major renovation, including a new on-site hotel. The authority argues that stable revenue is crucial for its redevelopment plans.   STORY 5: k9   The Georgia Police K9 Foundation has provided a LOF Streetfighter Vest, valued at $1,200, to K9 Axel of the Georgia Department of Natural Resources. The installation is expected to be completed by November 5th, coinciding with a consecration service. The German-built organ by Glatter-Götz cost $1.5 million and took 18 months to construct. The church's organist, Brian Parks, explained that consultants are fine-tuning the pipes to ensure proper sound quality and volume, likening the process to blending an orchestra.   Story 8: board   Unlike other local government bodies in Cobb County, the Marietta school board does not broadcast or record its meetings for public viewing. Board members and the superintendent have varying opinions on the matter. Only one board member, Jaillene Hunter, expressed explicit support for making meetings available through live streams or recordings, emphasizing transparency. Other members had concerns about the cost of implementing such changes and the impact on the close-knit community feel of in-person meetings. The district had experimented with live streaming during the pandemic, but the impact on engagement was minimal. The board chair, Kerry Minervini, noted that current resources are better focused on education rather than recording meetings.   Story 9: debut   The Walker Wolverines, under new coach TJ Anderson, showed significant improvement from last year's disappointing season as they triumphed over the Indians with a commanding 43-0 shutout victory. The Cobb Board of Commissioners approved the hike with a 3-2 vote, with two Republicans opposing. Commissioner JoAnn Birrell is against rate increases while the county transfers a portion of the water system's revenues to the general fund. The transfer percentage dropped from 7% to 6% in the recent budget. The chief financial officer, Bill Volckmann, stated that the reduction would put $2.5 million back into the water system. The water transfer is legal, but some commissioners are concerned about its impact on water rates. The increase is necessary due to higher costs in chemicals, biosolids disposal, wholesale water, materials, and the need for infrastructure replacements and upgrades. For the average residential water and sewer customer, the monthly increase will be $5.45.   we'll be right back   Break: CU of GA – Elon – Dayco   STORY 4: shuttle   The Cumberland Community Improvement District (CID) has introduced a new self-driving shuttle called the "Cumberland Hopper" that operates on two routes. The shuttle, manufactured by Navya and operated by Beep, can seat eight passengers and is part of an eight-month pilot program to collect data on moving people through the busy commercial district via self-driving vehicles. The routes include a back-and-forth run on a pedestrian bridge connecting Cobb Galleria to The Battery Atlanta and a loop around the Galleria office park, stopping at various locations. The ultimate goal is to have a fleet of shuttles connecting major destinations in Cumberland, offering alternative transportation options for residents and visitors. The shuttle is monitored remotely and operates on a virtual rail system. Attendees praised the shuttle's comfort and potential to enhance mobility options in the area.   STORY 5: divided   The Cobb Board of Commissioners approved a $1.2 billion fiscal year 2024 budget, representing a 3.8% increase from the previous year. The budget includes 34 new staff positions and raises of 3-4% for some employees. It allocates funds for various initiatives, such as a micro transit program, emergency warming shelters, a family advocacy center, and a countywide grant writer. The budget also adds $1 million to improve the county's permitting process for businesses. The county's general fund will increase by 3.4%, while the fire fund will grow by 13.6%. The budget passed in a party-line vote, with two GOP commissioners opposing due to concerns about the millage rate and spending.   Story 6: teachers   Around 600 new teachers recently attended the Cobb Schools New Teacher Academy, with some coming from neighboring school districts and even other states due to Cobb's reputation as one of the best places to teach. The district's focus on employees and programs like Georgia's BEST, which offers tuition-free advanced degrees, attracted many veteran educators. Superintendent Chris Ragsdale highlighted the district's commitment to student success, safety, and the use of the Cobb Teaching and Learning System (CTLS). During the academy, educators learned about CTLS and engaged in content-specific sessions to prepare for the upcoming school year. Building relationships with students was emphasized, and the new teachers were encouraged to make a positive difference every day.   We'll be back in a moment   Break: Drake- Ingles 6- G.O.N.   Story 7: Pigs   The 22nd Annual Pigs & Peaches BBQ Festival, presented by Williams Elleby Law Firm, will take place on August 18th from 6 to 10 p.m. and August 19th from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. at Adams Park in Kennesaw. The festival, now in its 22nd year, offers two days of music, food, beer, and family-friendly activities, attracting around 65,000 attendees annually. The event includes over 100 vendor booths, a Kid Zone with inflatables and amusements, and a Kansas City Barbeque Society sanctioned competition with cash and prizes awarded to winners. Headlining acts include Drake Milligan and Allie Colleen. The festival concludes on August 19th with a fireworks finale at 9:30 p.m. VIP Experience tickets are available for purchase and include various amenities. Other activities like the Pigs & Peaches Cornhole Classic and Parents Night Out are also scheduled. More information can be found on the festival's website or by contacting Kennesaw Parks & Recreation.   Story 8: Clemmons   Chase Clemmons, a former Etowah point guard, hosted a back-to-school event at the Salvation Army's Marietta facility before starting his basketball journey with Kennesaw State's team. He distributed free bookbags, school supplies, and other essentials to help families in need. Clemmons, who values giving back to the community, expressed his desire to make a positive impact as a student-athlete. The event, sponsored by Jersey Mike's and TEN91 Sports, was a success, with over 50 bookbags given out to 70 kids. After leading Etowah to the Region 6-6A championship, Clemmons now joins Kennesaw State's basketball program, aiming to make a strong first impression.   Story 9: AVP   The AVP Pro Beach Volleyball Tour's Gold Series Atlanta Open will take place at Atlantic Station from August 4th to 6th. The event will feature top professional beach volleyball athletes competing for men's and women's titles, including night sessions under the lights. The tournament has a rich history in Atlanta, and past champions include renowned names like Misty May-Treanor and Karch Kiraly. Notable athletes expected to compete include Taryn Kloth and Kristen Nuss, who made history by winning last year's Atlanta Open in their professional debut. The event will be streamed live on ESPN+ and TSN+ in Canada. Tickets are available for purchase on the AVP website.     We're back with final thoughts after this     Break: UMC 15 - Glover Park. - Henssler 60 Signoff- Thanks again for hanging out with us on today's Marietta Daily Journal podcast. Big plans are in store for Cobb Galleria

The Cobb Galleria Specialty Shops, located inside the Cobb Galleria convention center in Georgia, USA, was never as successful as its developers had hoped. Even when the convention business took off, the mall failed to take advantage of this trend. Today, the mall is home to 20 remaining shops, which pay month-to-month leases that barely cover operating costs. Plans to redevelop the Galleria complex by razing the mall and building a hotel and restaurants have been around since the 1990s, and the project is now gaining traction thanks to a revenue-sharing agreement between the authority, the Cobb Board of Commissioners and Cobb's cities. The Trust for Public Land, a non-profit that builds parks, has purchased a nine-acre scrub-covered lot in Mableton Parkway, located across the Chattahoochee River from Fulton County Airport in Atlanta. The site is intended to serve as the first of 25 regional trailheads for the Chattahoochee Riverlands project, a massive undertaking to create a series of parks and trails connecting a 100-mile stretch of the Chattahoochee from Lake Lanier's Buford Dam to Newnan. The first portion of the trail in south Cobb will be a pilot project that showcases the potential of the full Riverlands project. The Georgia Tech baseball program announced on Thursday that they will retire former Yellow Jacket standout Mark Teixeira's Number 23. Teixeira, a former Atlanta Braves first baseman, will be honored in a pregame ceremony on May 20th before Georgia Tech's game against Virginia. His number will join only two other retired numbers in program history. During his time at Georgia Tech, Teixeira earned a long list of honors, including the 2000 Dick Howser Trophy, National Player of the Year, 2000 ACC Player of the Year, and 2000 consensus first-team All-American. He was also named to the All-ACC first team twice. Teixeira played a 14-year career in MLB, winning five Gold Gloves and three Silver Sluggers. He also won the 2009 World Series as a member of the New York Yankees. Teixeira was elected to the Georgia Tech Sports Hall of Fame in 2011 and returned to campus after retiring from professional baseball to complete his degree in business administration in 2022. Bridger Properties, the developers behind the proposed 135-unit residential building in Marietta downtown, are considering condominiums instead of apartments for the building. The developers held a community meeting to hear from residents, many of whom were concerned about the maintenance of rental apartments. The seven-story building would be built on a 1.25-acre site north of the Marietta Square Market food hall. The land is already zoned for a category that permits the building, and the developers are not seeking variances from the city. However, Mayor Steve “Thunder” Tumlin and some City Council members have said they do not want it to be built. Community reporter Matt Goldin catches up with John Bednarowski coming to us from the Masters, presented by Ingles. An Arizona resident named Michael Lopez completed the Georgia Bass Slam, catching seven different species of bass across Georgia. The Bass Slam recognizes anglers with knowledge and skill while also promoting conservation and management of black bass and their habitats. To qualify, fish must be caught legally on waters where permission is granted, within a calendar year, and basic information and photos must be provided. Successful Bass Slammers receive a certificate, passes to the Go Fish Education Center, stickers, and recognition on the Bass Slam webpage and social media. Additionally, Georgia has a Trophy Bass Angler Award program for largemouth bass catches of 10 pounds or greater. Atlanta-based Bridger Properties has outlined plans for a multimillion-dollar renovation of the land it owns in Marietta's downtown area. The plans include a public plaza at Marietta Station, a facelift for a dozen stores on Church Street, and a new seven-storey residential building north of Marietta Square Market food hall. The developer has also said it will lease its retail properties to small businesses and local operators, and it is seeking new restaurants and retail outlets for Church Street. However, residents raised concerns over the departure of previous tenants, the rental rates charged and the loss of parking spaces. #CobbCounty #Georgia #LocalNews        -            -            -            -            -            The Marietta Daily Journal Podcast is local news for Marietta, Kennesaw, Smyrna, and all of Cobb County.             Subscribe today, so you don't miss an episode! MDJOnline            Register Here for your essential digital news.            https://www.chattahoocheetech.edu/  https://cuofga.org/ https://www.esogrepair.com/ https://www.drakerealty.com/           Find additional episodes of the MDJ Podcast here.             This Podcast was produced and published for the Marietta Daily Journal and MDJ Online by BG Ad Group   For more information be sure to visit https://www.bgpodcastnetwork.com      See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Mark Levine of Atlanta Home Shows joins the podcast to talk about all the great exhibits you can see at the Atlanta Home Show this weekend at the Cobb Galleria.  Plus: A Kennesaw State University economist told businesspeople Tuesday that he's optimistic that steps taken by the U.S. Treasury, the Federal Reserve and the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation will stabilize the banking sector in the wake of two regional banks collapsing. In response to the failure of California-based Silicon Valley Bank and New York-based Signature Bank, authorities announced a new instrument through which banks whose balance sheets are hobbled by high interest rates will be able to access liquidity in the form of Fed loans against their affected assets. The Treasury Department, meanwhile, announced Sunday that customers of both banks would not lose their funds, including those who had funds exceeding the $250,000 federal insurance limit. President Joe Biden said Monday taxpayers would not bear the costs and the money would instead come from fees that banks pay into the federal Deposit Insurance Fund. He also said the collapse of the banks would not spiral into a larger crisis, as occurred in 2008. Those steps, Tutterow said, provide a “backstop” against what happened at Silicon Valley Bank, which he described as an “old-school bank run” where customers rush to withdraw their money in a panic. Tutterow said that banks like SVB invested heavily in longer-term bonds when interest rates were low. But then the Fed began raising interest rates to combat inflation, which lowered the value of the bonds. But to combat inflation, the Fed raised interest rates several times over the past year, lowering the value of the bonds. One audience member asked Tutterow if he expected more interest rate hikes, in light of the recent bank collapses. Tutterow said he thinks the hikes will continue. Another factor in the rapid collapse of SVB, Tutterow said, was technology. People can, with a few taps on their smartphone, move money between accounts, meaning banks are run quicker than they used to be. A Miami man wanted for questioning in a south Florida homicide was arrested after a police chase in Cumberland Monday, according to authorities. Gustavo Alexander Aviles (Ah-Veel-Lez) was arrested around 2 p.m. Monday at the corner of Cobb Parkway and Akers Mill Road while attempting to elude police, according to jail records. Aviles (Ah-Veel-Lez) is charged with fleeing or attempting to elude a police officer for a felony offense, a felony, as well as numerous misdemeanors related to traffic violations, per jail records, and he is being held without bond. Wheeler's Isaiah Collier is the 2022-23 Gatorade Georgia Boys Basketball Player of the Year. The USC signee is the fifth Gatorade Georgia Boys Basketball Player of the Year to be chosen from Wheeler High School. The award, which recognizes not only outstanding athletic excellence, but also high standards of academic achievement and exemplary character demonstrated on and off the court, distinguishes Collier as Georgia's best high school boys basketball player. The Naismith Player of the Year is now one of three finalists for the prestigious Gatorade National Boys Basketball Player of the Year award to be announced later this month. Collier joins an elite alumni association of state award-winners in 12 sports, including Chet Holmgren, Trae Young, Jayson Tatum, and Karl-Anthony Towns. Collier is the fourth Wheeler player to have earned the honor joining Jaylen Brown, D.A. Layne, Shareef Abdur-Rahim, and becomes the sixth overall from Cobb County joining Sharife Cooper, who won the award at McEachern in 2019 and Brian Oliver, who won in 1986 while playing at Wills. Before the statewide turkey hunting season opens, youth and mobility-impaired hunters utilizing private land have an early chance to harvest a gobbler during the special opportunity turkey season March 25-26, according to the Georgia Department of Natural Resources' Wildlife Resources Division. This weekend hunt opportunity is available only for youth 16 years of age and younger, or hunters that are mobility impaired. The season bag limit for turkeys is one gobbler per hunter per day and a season total of two gobblers. Resident youth hunters under age 16 will not need a license. Hunters age 16 years or older, including those accompanying youth or others, will need a hunting license and a big game license unless hunting on their own private land. One can get a license at GoOutdoorsGeorgia.com, at a retail license vendor, or by phone. The 2023 Georgia statewide turkey season opens April 1 for Private Land and April 8 for Public Land. With approval from the Cobb Board of Commissioners on Tuesday, construction is expected to begin next month on the first phase of a trail along the Chattahoochee River in south Cobb. The first 1.2-mile stretch of the Chattahoochee Riverlands project, a trail in and around Discovery Park at the River Line, will begin construction sometime in April and is expected to take two years to complete, per the $3.4 million contract with Excellere Construction approved by commissioners in February. The trail segment along Discovery Boulevard is the “pilot” portion of what is hoped to be a multi-jurisdiction, 100-mile network from Lake Lanier to Newnan. The commission on Tuesday approved the final hurdle in the process to start construction on the first phase of the pilot portion. That last step before construction was confirmation from the Atlanta Regional Commission that the first phase of the project is consistent with the regional plan for the Chattahoochee River Corridor. Commissioners approved ARC's certificate of compliance by a 4-1 vote during their regular meeting Tuesday. Local business leader and author Kevin Paul Scott recently brought together leaders who have inspired him throughout the years to publicly dedicate his latest book and thank those who have impacted his life. A highlight of the book launch event was Scott's presentation to Barbara Dooley, wife of the late Coach Vince Dooley. Scott's new book, "Inspired Every Day," provides a path for individuals to find their passion and live a fulfilling life. It's only fitting that Scott dedicated the book to Vince and Barbara Dooley, after their mentorship and friendship for more than 15 years. Sadly, Coach Dooley passed away only weeks before the book was published. Scott doesn't just write about inspiration, he lives it out. The name of his company is ADDO, which is Latin for "Inspire." The global firm works with companies like Coca-Cola and Chick-fil-A to provide strategies, resources and programs to develop leaders. The book launch was somewhat of a full-circle moment because ADDO's inaugural event took place in Marietta more than a decade ago when Dooley and Reighard joined then-Sen. Johnny Isakson and Dr. Betty Siegel to host leaders. Fred McGriff is a Hall of Famer

Marietta Daily Journal Podcast

Kennesaw's downtown thronged with thousands Saturday afternoon as the city kicked off the holiday season with a parade down Main Street. The procession featured marching bands, twirlers, and floats from local bands, along with Santa Claus himself perched on the bed of a pickup truck. The parade also featured businesses, such as Whataburger, and the local Scout troops. Fred McGriff is finally a Hall of Famer. McGriff was voted in Sunday by the Contemporary Era committee, which was formed by the Hall to consider players who starred since 1980 and were not elected in the annual voting by the Baseball Writers' Association of America. McGriff, 59, hit 493 home runs during a 19-year controversy-free career that included 13 seasons of 27 or more homers, seven straight top-10 league MVP finishes and a World Series championship with the Atlanta Braves. He had two stints with his hometown Tampa Bay Rays, as well as time with the Toronto Blue Jays, San Diego Padres, Chicago Cubs and Los Angeles Dodgers. McGriff was elected unanimously by the 16-member committee. He was the only player elected from an eight-man ballot that also included Albert Belle, Barry Bonds, Roger Clemens, Don Mattingly, Dale Murphy, Rafael Palmeiro and Curt Schilling. During 10 years on the Baseball Writers' Association of America ballot, McGriff never came close to the 75% threshold needed for election, surpassing 24 percent only in 2019, his final year of eligibility, when he got to 39.8. That lack of support was a source of considerable frustration for his supporters, who felt he was being overlooked and even penalized in comparison to players who were connected to the use of performance-enhancing drugs. McGriff chose to not say much, often just saying that he was happy to be considered.   By the time early voting ended Friday, nearly one in every three Cobb County voters had already cast a ballot in the runoff election between U.S. Senator Raphael Warnock, a Democrat, and Republican challenger Herschel Walker. More than 155,510 Cobb voters, or 30.4%, have voted early in person or by absentee ballot, according to data from the Secretary of State's office. That turnout rate surpasses the state at-large, where 1,852,593 voters, or 26.4%, have cast a ballot. Early voting totals in Cobb weren't as high as before the November 8 general election, but voters had far less time to cast a ballot — one week before the runoff, as opposed to three weeks before the general election. That resulted in single-day totals that blew past the previous election. Last Monday, for example, saw over 27,000 voters cast a ballot in person, resulting in long lines at some Cobb polling locations. On Friday, the county said 29,699 people voted early. By way of comparison, the largest single-day total in the general election, which saw short wait times, was around 14,600. In Cobb, the huge early voting turnout was overshadowed Friday by a legal dispute over absentee ballots. The American Civil Liberties Union and Southern Poverty Law Center sued the county, alleging that delays in ballot mailing caused by the Thanksgiving holiday had disenfranchised voters. After hours of negotiation, Superior Court Judge Kellie Hill signed off on an agreement to extend the absentee ballot deadline by three days — to December 9 — for any voter whose absentee ballot application was accepted on or before Nov. 26. Ballots in that category must be postmarked by Tuesday, December 6, which is Election Day.   Three players scored in double figures, and Kell used an opportunistic defense to keep McEachern at bay and win their matchup 67-62 in the Tournament of Champions Showcase at Wheeler High School on Saturday.  The Longhorns, the Number 1 team in Class AAAAA, trailed only twice the entire game -- at 8-6 in the first quarter, and then 40-39 in the third -- and found a way to win despite missing 7-foot center Peyton Marshall. Coach Jermaine Sellers said Marshall could have played if it was a playoff game, but the team did not want to take the chance this early in the season. To offset his absence, Kell played the entire game with a added sense of urgency, grabbing nearly every loose ball, getting hands in passing lanes and creating steals. Each time McEachern, which was playing without starting guard Moses Hipps, seemed to get back into the game, Kell would force a turnover to two and push its lead back to four or five points, which it was the majority of the second half. The Longhorns needed to do all those things to help offset the performance of the Indians' Ace Bailey. The 6-foot-9 junior forward, a day after scoring 34 points against South Cobb, he kept McEachern, ranked third in Class AAAAAAA, in the game with a 30-point performance. The Cobb Galleria and Cobb Energy Performing Arts Centre released its annual report this week, and business for both is back in full swing. For the first time since 2019, both venues were financially in the black. That was made possible due to the full return of live entertainment and events at two of Cobb's largest and busiest destinations. The Galleria hosted 187 events, up from less than 100 events in its previous fiscal year. Approximately 229,000 people visited the venue. CEPAC, meanwhile, held 178 events and brought in 180,000 guests after hosting next to no events during the depths of the pandemic. The Galleria posted an operating profit of just shy of $2 million, while the Galleria hit $3.53 million, the latter topping its 2019 numbers by roughly $750,000. The authority also boasted its best sales tax proceeds since before the pandemic. After generating about $1.7 million last year, the authority reported its venues generated $7.5 million in revenue from sales, liquor, hotel-motel and other taxes. Wheeler opened the second half on a 10-2 run to build a double-digit lead and gradually pulled away from a pesky Kimball High School from Texas squad 77-61 in the final game of the Tournament of Champions Showcase at Wheeler High School on Saturday. Kimball kept the game close throughout the first half and trailed only 30-28 at the break, so coach Larry Thompson said it was important to get off to a good start in the third quarter. The main big guy in the middle was 6-foot-9 forward Arrinten Page. The USC signee took full advantage, finishing the night with a team-high 21 points, including six dunks, along with 12 rebounds. Leading 41-34 a 3-pointer and a dunk by Jelani Hamilton, who finished with 12 points, pushed the Wildcats' lead to 46-34. Back-to-back dunks by Page late in the quarter gave Wheeler, the Number 1 team in Class AAAAAAA, a 50-40 advantage before five straight points by T'Johnn Brown, who led all scorers with 24 points, cut the lead to five to start the fourth quarter.  Isaiah Collier, who had 16 points, eight assists and five rebounds, finally found his groove in the final 8 minutes. He opened the quarter with a driving layup, got fouled, and made the free throw. He added four more points as the game came to a close, but he set up three of Page's four dunks down the stretch with some big-time assists. A Page dunk and a 3-pointer by Hamilton pushed the lead back into double-digits at 65-54. A dunk and a putback by Ricky McKenzie made the lead 13 at the 2:48 mark, and two more dunks by Page put Wheeler up 75-61.  Josh Hill scored nine points and McKenzie added eight.

A 23-year-old died from injuries sustained in a Sunday car wreck in west Cobb, police announced. Amarjeet S. Ranhotra of Acworth was killed in the crash, which occurred on Due West Road near its intersection with Lanesborough Drive, according to the Cobb County Police Department. Ranhotra was driving eastbound in a 2002 silver Honda Odyssey, police said. At around 7:30 a.m., while negotiating a left curve, Ranhotra lost control and crossed into the westbound lane. The right side of the Honda collided with the front of a brown 2012 Ford F-250. Ranhotra was fatally injured and pronounced dead at the scene, police said. The driver of the Ford was taken to Wellstar Kennestone Hospital with injuries described as non-life threatening.   A Smyrna man was arrested Saturday evening, accused by police of causing a crash at South Cobb Parkway and Spinks Drive that left another man seriously injured. Selvin De Jesus Herrera-Lopez, 31, is charged with seven misdemeanors, including DUI, open container and reckless driving, according to jail records. Marietta police say his 2021 Toyota Tacoma struck the rear of 62-year-old Christopher Okabah's Toyota Camry around 6:50 p.m. Saturday. Marietta police said Herrera-Lopez was speeding, traveling south on Cobb Parkway, when he failed to yield for Okabah. After being struck by Herrera-Lopez, Okabah's vehicle struck the rear of a stopped 2020 Jeep Gladiator driven a 41-year-old man from Florida. According to police, Herrera-Lopez's truck rolled over once before landing back on its wheels and coming to rest on the side of the road. Okabah sustained serious injuries and was transported to Wellstar Kennestone Hospital for treatment, police said. Herrera-Lopez and the Florida man sustained minor injuries. Hat tricks are usually kept for soccer or hockey. It's not often you find one on the football field, but that is exactly what happened over a 7 minute period in McEachern's 26-0 victory over Alpharetta in the second round of the Class 7A flag football playoffs on Tuesday. Senior Kye Giddens intercepted three passes on three consecutive Alpharetta drives. She set up two short touchdown drives on the first two, but on the third, she returned it 25 yards for a touchdown with 40.3 seconds left in the first half. The effort helped the Indians remain undefeated at 18-0, and they will host Milton, which they beat 7-6 in the season opener, in the state quarterfinals on Thursday.  Giddens, who is mainly a wide receiver on offense, made one of her few times on defense count against Alpharetta. Crunch time came with 7:39 to play in the first half. Amber Kirkpatrick had just thrown her first touchdown pass of the game to give the Indians a 7-0 lead. On the first play of the ensuing Alpharetta drive, Giddens grabbed her first interception to set the offense up with a short field.  Two plays later, Kirkpatrick connected with De'Aysia Williams for a touchdown with 3:48 to play for a 13-0 lead. The win was the 12th shutout of the season, and now the Indians will try to do something they haven't done before. All three years they have advanced to the state quarterfinals, but they have yet to advance to the semifinals.  Of the eight teams remaining in the Class 7A playoffs, McEachern is one of four Cobb County teams still alive.  Marietta advanced to quarterfinals by beating Wheeler 26-0 in opener, then defeated Archer 6-0. Allatoona downed Westlake and Centennial by identical 26-7 scores, and Pope (beat Osborne 27-7 in Round 1 and followed by rolling past Grayson 32-12.  The Blue Devils will host North Gwinnett, the Buccaneers will host Roswell and the Greyhounds will travel to Blessed Trinity on Thursday. The winners will advance to the semifinals December 5 at the Atlanta Falcons training facility in Flowery Branch A new bike station in Cobb's commercial hub was unveiled Tuesday, now the eighth of the network. The station is next to the Battery's Silver Deck on Circle 75 Parkway, steps from Truist Park. Riders will have direct access to the Cobb Galleria across the pedestrian bridge over I-285, along with dozens of miles of trails around the area. With the launch of the station by the Cumberland Community Improvement District (CID), it brings the program's total fleet up to about 40 bikes. As with the rest of Cumberland's fleet, the bikes are unlocked using a QR code printed on their body. The first hour of a ride is free, followed by a fee of $3 per hour. Ali Nuckles of Georgia Commute Options, a group that aims to reduce pollution by encouraging alternative transportation modes, said the bike share program would help reduce emissions and traffic. Other stations are located near the Galleria, Cumberland Mall, the Rottenwood Creek trailhead, and on the far side of the Battery. The CID hopes to soon open a ninth station along Akers Mill Road, between Cumberland Boulevard and Powers Ferry Road. That expansion will bring the fleet up to 45 bikes. Interested residents can look up the full trail network along with bike station locations at cumberlandtrails.org. On Giving Tuesday, the day of charitable giving that follows the commercial holidays of Black Friday and Cyber Monday, a Cobb County YMCA distributed food to local families at Smyrna's Brumby Elementary. The Northeast Cobb Family YMCA distributes food every week. This Tuesday, each family could receive fresh onions, apples, cabbage, cucumbers and bread, along with canned goods. Gayle Battersby, the director of operations at the Northeast Cobb Family YMCA in east Cobb, said they partner with the Atlanta Community Food Bank to provide the produce. YMCAs across the country scaled up their food distribution programs in March of 2020. Battersby said when the pandemic hit, the number of families requiring help shot up. At one point, the Northeast Cobb YMCA was providing food to about 475 Cobb families weekly. That number declined as the pandemic receded, but she said it recently spiked again to around 270 as the cost of rent and gas has increased. The food is distributed almost entirely by a team of volunteers, and the funds for the program are raised entirely by the Northeast Cobb YMCA. According to volunteer Joan Cotter, the crowd of people receiving food on Tuesday was small compared to the usual turnout. She said last week, before Thanksgiving, the volunteers had to organize the cars into five separate lines. On Giving Tuesday, the Journal counted 15 cars in line 30 minutes after the event began.   Troop 353 held an Eagle Scout ceremony on November 19 at Burnt hickory Baptist Church. The scouts were: Tyler Clement, a senior at Hillgrove High School, whose project was a Tranquility Garden at Cobb Hospital. Jacob Fisher, a senior at Allatoona High School, whose project was building a Gaga Ball pit at Due West United Methodist Church. Luke White, a senior at Living Science Academy, whose project was a playground fence at Cobb Vineyard Church in Kennesaw. Sean Cauffiel, a senior at Harrison High School, whose project was a Butterfly Garden at Ford Elementary. Daniel Hurley, a senior at Harrison High School, whose project was an outdoor clasroom at Ford Elementary. All of these scouts started together as Cub Scouts, rose through the ranks and crossed over to Troop 353. They all stayed in their own patrol and made Eagle together.
