In this episode of the "Get Hired" podcast, host Nicky Bulmer and co-host Michelle Frechette interview Tatiane, an experienced WordPress developer. Tatiane shares her journey in WordPress development, emphasizing her skills in creating and customizing themes and plugins. The discussion covers Tatiane's approach to handling feedback, collaborating with teams, and optimizing WordPress sites. Nicky and Michelle provide Tatiane with resume and interview tips, highlighting the importance of clear communication and showcasing both technical and soft skills. The episode concludes with practical advice for job seekers, reinforcing the podcast's mission to enhance job application materials and interview skills.Top Takeaways:Cover Letters Should Be Concise & Tailored – A strong cover letter shouldn't just repeat the resume. Instead, it should highlight why your skills and experience are a great fit for the specific role and company. Less is often more—focusing on one key project or skill that directly relates to the job can make a stronger impact than listing everything.Confidence & Clarity Matter in Interviews – Candidates should confidently communicate their skills, especially when discussing technical expertise. Using specific language, such as naming programming languages or frameworks, helps interviewers understand the depth of knowledge. Additionally, if an interviewer has an accent or uses unfamiliar words, repeating for clarification or asking them to rephrase is a good strategy.Continuous Improvement & Adaptability Lead to Success – Surrounding yourself with the language, culture, and best practices of your industry (as Tatiane did with English) makes growth easier. Being open to feedback, refining application materials, and improving communication skills over time can significantly increase job prospects.Mentioned In The Show:The Events Calendar Liquid WebDungeons and DragonsGitHub WPIncludes.me

I hope you've had another fantastic week and are coming into the home stretch before the weekend. What better way to celebrate than to run through some of the latest happenings at the intersection of business, technology, and human experience? With that, let's get to it. AI Job Seeking Gone Wrong - If you're going to use AI to help write a cover letter, and I'd strongly encourage you to do so, please at least take the time to proof it for [insert info here] gaps. The rise in failure to do so is causing a lot of noise, but is it an AI problem or a people problem? Lessons from Al Pacino - While I have my concerns about people becoming overdependent on AI, it's not an issue limited to AI use. Just ask “The Godfather.” Al Pacino has an incredible story about how taking his eye off the ball left him discovering he was bankrupt in his 70s. So, don't think avoiding AI means you're secure. Walmart RTO Response - Walmart and 3M are two of the latest big players in the news for their questionable RTO policies, but one Walmart C-suite exec is taking a stand. Rather than relocate to somewhere in Arkansas, Walmart's CTO opted to leave the company. It's encouraging when folks at the top are willing to go against the current. Undesired AI Ressurection - I've talked on multiple occasions about the risks of looking to AI for the artificial resurrection of lost loved ones through ghostbots, but how would you feel if your lost loved one was resurrected without your knowledge? One father made his feelings pretty clear when he discovered his tragically murdered daughter on Character.ai. Chipotle AI Recruiting - I love a good pun, and if you interview at Chipotle anytime soon, you may get to interact with one literally. That's right, they've created an AI bot “Ava Cado” to help streamline their hiring. Only time will tell how it all plays out. However, based on my initial investigation into their strategy and plan, I'd give it my AI stamp of approval. Show Notes: In this weekly update, Christopher explores the intelligent use of Generative AI (Gen AI) in job applications, emphasizing the importance of providing thoughtful prompts and avoiding lazy mistakes. The discussion extends to the ethical concerns of AI, such as the unauthorized use of a deceased individual's likeness and the need for better governance. He shares Al Pacino's story of financial recovery highlighting resilience and responsibility, and address financial uncertainty, affirming the value of personal effort over material wealth. Additionally, he examines the impact of return-to-office mandates by major companies like Walmart and 3M, offering advice for employees. Highlighting Chipotle's AI-driven recruitment process 'Ava Cado', we showcase how AI can streamline operations while discussing the broader implications for the future of recruitment. Tune in for a blend of practical advice, ethical insights, and predictions on AI's role in business and technology. 00:00 - Introduction and Weekly Update Overview 01:36 - The Viral ChatGPT Cover Letter Controversy 11:37 - Al Pacino's Financial Downfall and Recovery 20:14 - Return to Office Mandates: Walmart and 3M 31:08 - Unwanted AI Resurrection 39:43 - Chipotle's AI Recruiting Strategy 48:46 - Conclusion and Final Thoughts #ai #recruiting #flexibleworking #strategy #ghostbots

This week we just kept on making the logo bigger and bigger (and bigger) until we caught the despairing eye of legendary art director, author and, let's face it, visual Jesus, Mr Dave Dye. The art director's art director, Dave is the architect of some of the coolest advertising you've ever seen – with a hit-list of iconic ads for everyone from Adidas to Volkswagen to The Economist. He's also a champion for advertising with more wit and brains, expertly rummaging back through some forgotten ad masterpieces via his wildly popular blog and podcast, Stuff From The Loft. Finally, he's the co-author of the excellent The Howard Gossage Show, a book created with another friend of CTA, Steve Harrison. A guest so entertaining we genuinely forgot there was a running time, Dave shares the stories behind his most memorable campaigns, the lessons we can all learn from past masters, a philosophy that's all about making ads people enjoy and his optimism for the creative future of the industry. ///// Rummage around Dave's Stuff from the Loft Timestamps (05:00) - From Paperboy to Trying to Get a Job in Advertising (08:04) - Creating His Own Ads (10:25) - Changing the Approach to Cover Letters (12:33) - Getting Interviews and a Foot in the Door (20:03) - Being Bold and Distinct in Job Applications (25:27) – Optimism and Naivety in Advertising (30:02) - Challenges of Working with Established Brands (31:18) - The Potential of Digital Advertising (34:47) - The Origins of Stuff From The Loft (36:58) - The Purpose of Archiving Work (40:12) - Transitioning to a Public Archive (43:10) - Accidental Evolution into Podcasting (56:50) – Listener Questions Dave's book recommendations are: A Self-Help Guide for Copywriters by Dan Nelken The Howard Gossage Show by Steve Harrison & Dave Dye /////

Improve your job search outcomes with these tips Erin Wolfram shares on this episode of Leadership on the Links! Erin is a Certified Professional Resume Writer (CPRW) and Professional Etiquette Consultant who is the owner of Career Advantage Golf – career consulting services geared toward professionals in golf course maintenance and turf management. Her business partners with the Golf Course Superintendents Association of America (GCSAA) to provide its members with free resume and cover letter review services, along with additional discounted career services. Prior to becoming a business owner, Erin worked in career services and career course development. Erin has her B.S. in Secondary English Education from Kansas State University and a Master of Science in Counseling Psychology and a Master of Science in Educational Technology from The University of Kansas. In this episode, Erin Wolfram of Career Advantage Golf shares insights aspiring superintendents and other golf professionals can use to stand out in their job search. Demonstrate the Value You Can Bring After reviewing thousands of resumes, Erin can confidently say many job seekers are very duty and responsibility focused. While this can be a great way to highlight your experience, it's important to also demonstrate what you have accomplished in previous roles. Showcasing successful projects, leadership strengths, and tangible results all help differentiate yourself from other candidates. Her advice is to highlight how your leadership skills positively impacted your facility, crew, and the overall organization. Update Your Application Materials on a Regular Basis It's very common for Erin to run into job seekers who haven't updated their application materials, such as their resume, cover letter, and portfolio, in over a decade. Of course, this often leaves these job seekers little time to update their materials and submit a polished application. Erin recommends taking a more proactive approach by regularly updating these materials, even if you are not actively applying for jobs. This ensures your information is accurate, up to date, and not rushed. Tailor Your Application to Each Role Hiring managers can spot an application that was copy and pasted from another. Erin recommends first developing a strong foundational resume and then tweaking it to adhere to the job you're applying for. It's important to show employers that you put the effort into your application. Hiring managers want to see that you can communicate your specific strengths as a candidate in relation to the role. Take an Active Interest in Your Profession Don't just join professional associations, but take an active role in them. Go to the meetings and annual conferences, network with members, build relationships, and really market yourself. By doing this, you are showing others that you are committed to your industry and professional development. You will soon find that by fostering these connections, more opportunities will come your way. Enjoy this episode with Career Advantage Golf owner Erin Wolfram… Soundbytes 19:21-19:46 “I think, in this industry, in particular, portfolios are important. And I find that a lot of people don't have a portfolio. And again, sometimes they are requested to bring a portfolio to an interview, and then there's this mad dash to get something together that could be much better if they would have started early. So I think portfolios are a great way to market yourself in this industry. ” 20:47-21:14 “In order to really market yourself in an interview, you want to provide specific answers that give quality examples that demonstrate the value that you've brought to your previous organizations that you will then bring to this future organization. So, really thinking about specific examples that demonstrate your greatest skills, strengths, and qualifications.” Quotes “The folks who I work with who utilize LinkedIn, and utilize it effectively, are marketing themselves better than others.” “Think of examples that you want to share with others. And know that it's not bragging, it's not being conceited. It's what you have to do to demonstrate your value.” “Get with your partner, get with your friends, get with someone like me, and actually practice answering questions, because it's not something that's comfortable, right?” “I do recommend that you get some advice from somebody else in your industry.” Links mentioned in this episode: Tyler Bloom Consulting: https://tylerbloomconsulting.com/ Career Advantage Golf: https://careeradvantagegolf.com/ Connect with Erin Wolfram on LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/erinwolfram/ | https://www.linkedin.com/company/careeradvantagegolf/

The typical cover letter sucks. It literally hurts to read them they are so bad. But, don't fall for the "fried ice cream" peddled by the private sector recruiters who argue that cover letters are no longer necessary. That is not true. Every public sector executive competing for a position needs to have a cover letter and this is one of the easiest places elite candidates can differentiate themselves from their competition. Write a great cover letter that captures the reader's attention and you are going to stand out from the crowd. However, you can't write a kick-ass cover letter if you are committing one of these 8 deadly sins.
