Supporters claim it is not a national ID because it is voluntary. However, any state that opts out will automatically make non-persons out of its citizens. The citizens of that state will be unable to have any dealings with the federal government because their ID will not be accepted. They will not be able to fly or to take a train. In essence, in the eyes of the federal government they will cease to exist. It is absurd to call this voluntary.” Y'all get that? Sure hope so. Call 770.874.3200 for more info.    Break: STORY 4: Two to Serve 25 Years in Prison for Cherokee County Home Invasion Kaiden Pridgen, 19, and Cibias Vieira, 23, pled guilty to charges from a 2022 Cherokee County home invasion and attempted armed robbery, receiving 35-year sentences with 25 years in prison. The masked defendants, armed with a pistol, assaulted and held victims at gunpoint while searching for cash. Evidence from surveillance, geofence data, and social media linked them to the crime. Pridgen, 16 at the time, was tried as an adult due to the crime's severity. A third accomplice, David Kelley, who acted as the driver, received a 20-year sentence with five years in prison. The case highlights the lasting trauma of home invasions. Starting May 7 all U.S. flyers will need a real ID to get through security and federal buildings. Aimee Inama, PennDOT’s spokesperson joined The Spark to share what we need to know before the deadline. Asia: Okay, so let's start with the basics. What exactly is the real ID and why was it introduced? Aimee: A real ID is a federally acceptable photo ID or driver's license. And it's a convenient way for people to use to fly domestically, enter certain federal buildings that require a federally acceptable ID or military bases. The federal government set a deadline of May 7th for the enforcement of the of the Real ID Act. and it is a federal act. So in Pennsylvania, real ID is optional. And what that means is Pennsylvanians can choose whether or not they want to get a real ID. So they can say, I'm gonna get the real ID and they'll be set. Or they need to have another form of federally acceptable ID, such as a passport on or after May 7th to do, to fly domestically enter certain federal facilities, as well as military bases. Asia: What are the key differences between a standard Pennsylvania driver's license and Real ID? Aimee: You do have to do this anyway for a regular driver's license as well. You have to show certain documentation. But for a real idea, you need to show proof of identity, which is in the form of a birth certificate or a valid passport. You have to show proof of social security number, which could your social security card or a W -2. And the key is that proof of social security number has to show all nine digits. You do have to show two proofs of Pennsylvania residency. So that could be a driver's license, a vehicle registration, utility bill, something like that. And you also need to show proof of legal name change if you had one. And all of those documents are on our website so people can see the list of the acceptable documents that we take. Asia: Who needs to get a real ID and is it mandatory for all Pennsylvanians? Aimee: In Pennsylvania, it's optional, so that means you Pennsylvanians can choose whether or not they want to get a real ID. So, we have a little quiz on our website, so people should go to that quiz, take it, and that will determine whether or not a real ID is right for them. So, and like I had mentioned before, a real ID is needed in order to... It's a convenient way for people to fly domestically, enter certain federal buildings that require a federally acceptable ID. or inter -military bases. So, and like I said, in Pennsylvania, it's optional. So that means if you don't want a real ID, you just need another federally acceptable ID, which is a passport. Montana Sues Yellowstone Over Bison Herd Management: A Battle for Livestock Protection Montana has filed a lawsuit against the National Park Service (NPS) over its 2024 bison management plan, which increases the allowed bison population in Yellowstone from 3,000 to 6,000. Governor Greg Gianforte and state officials argue that this plan puts Montana's livestock at risk of brucellosis, a disease spread by bison. The state claims Yellowstone has failed to manage the herd since the 1960s, and that expanding the population violates federal law. Yellowstone, however, argues that the park can support a larger herd, citing new studies showing that elk, not bison, have been responsible for spreading brucellosis to cattle. NPS also points out that bison-human conflicts have decreased over time, and that tribal and public hunting programs have helped manage the population. Montana contends that the federal government's actions burden its farmers and ranchers. They accuse Yellowstone of failing to engage with the state during planning. This change makes it easier for hunters with fewer or no points to get a tag but frustrates those with decades of accumulated points. Resident hunters will still get priority, with 75% of licenses reserved for them, while nonresidents receive the remaining 25%. The overhaul also introduces a once-in-a-lifetime harvest rule for premier species like bull moose and bighorn sheep, alongside increased fees and mandatory waiting periods for certain tags. Critics argue that the changes devalue preference points and fail to adequately address concerns about nonresident quotas. On Tuesday night it will be partly cloudy, with a low of around 25 degrees.Iowans who have yet to receive a gold star license to become compliant under federal law to fly domestically will have two more years to do so.The U.S. Department of Homeland Security announced Monday it is delaying full enforcement of the REAL ID Act, extending the deadline from May 3, 2023 to May 7, 2025. The announcement marks the department's third pandemic-related extension.That means states now will have additional time to ensure residents have driver's licenses and identification cards that meet the security standards established by the federal law. To meet the federal requirements, individuals will have to bring documents that prove their identity and date of birth (such as a certified copy of a birth certificate or valid passport), Social Security number, legal status or authorized presence in the United States, residential address and proof of name change (most commonly a certified marriage certificate).Iowans can create a customized list of documents they will need to bring with them at the Iowa DOT website.Maybe by the time Iowans want to fly with their REAL IDs, there will be some more pilots to fly their planes. He's also charged with assault with intent to commit sexual abuse, an aggravated misdemeanor.According to a criminal complaint, Goslin approached the woman outside her residence in Mount Vernon on Nov. 9. He knew the woman, but only as a past acquaintance.He brandished a knife and took the woman's house keys, then forced her inside the home and confined her there. He attempted to sexually assault her, but she was able to fight him off, the complaint states.A warrant for Goslin's arrest was issued on Nov. 21, and he was arrested...

Before the COVID-19 pandemic, many Pennsylvanians were either in the process of obtaining a REAL ID or asking whether they should or needed one. It actually was a hot topic. More than two years later, REAL ID is back and the state has set a deadline to get one. May 3, 2023 is that date. Congress passed the REAL ID Act in 2005 to improve national security standards for state-issued identification. Next May, REAL IDs will be required to board domestic and foreign flights and enter a military base or federal facility. A driver's license will no longer suffice. In this episode Mary Schaeffer, AP Now founder and podcast host, talks about two looming issues that many companies are not addressing. Each has a deadline and her concern is companies won’t be ready. The issues are the REAL ID Act with a deadline of October 1, 2020, and the new 1099-NEC form that will replace the 1099-MISC for certain reporting. She begins the podcast by discussing the issue of REALIDs, which most Americans use as identification to fly domestically. Experts estimate that two-thirds of the licenses currently issued are not compliant. After describing the problem, she offers solutions. She also warns listeners that if they are going to have employees rely on passports instead of drivers’ licenses for identification purposes, they need to address the issues related to that. She discusses two of them. The second big issue facing virtually every organization is the new 1099-NEC form they will be required to use starting in January for reporting non-employee compensation. She advises against waiting until the last minute to start preparing. System changes will need to be made by many and they should be made sooner rather than later. In closing Schaeffer advocates for addressing these issues sooner rather than later. She closes by noting that ignoring these matters until right before the date the requirements become effective will result in a real nightmare for any organization that did not take action sooner. Beginning Oct. 1, 2021, the new federal deadline, every air traveler 18 years of age and older will need a REAL ID-compliant driver license or another acceptable form of ID to fly within the United States. When enforcement of the REAL ID Act begins, the regular Wisconsin driver license or ID will no longer be accepted identification for air travel or to enter a federal building or military base. The REAL ID Act is a law that Congress passed without hearings in 2005, which sought to make state driver licensing into a national ID system. The law tries to coerce state compliance with federal identification standards by threatening that the Transportation Security Administration will refuse driver’s licenses and IDs from noncompliant states when Americans go to travel. This fall, a Department of Homeland Security campaign to stir up fears that the TSA will refuse drivers licenses at airports across America was so successful that passport offices in New Mexico were swamped, and a DHS official recently published a piece in the Albuquerque Journal backtracking on a widely reported January 2016 deadline for state compliance.DHS claims that all but a few holdout states stand in the way of having a national ID. But no state is in compliance today, and no state will be for the foreseeable future. Congress continues to fund this intrusive federal power grab, even as recent experience shows that national identification requirements are ineffective in enhancing security. The ACLU's Chris Calabrese, veteran legal counsel assigned to the anti-Real ID effort in Washington updates listeners on a newly filed legislation. The new bill filed in the House of Representatives, would repeal Real ID entirely and replace it with the negotiated rulemaking process. The rule making process, part of a 9-11 Commissions reform bill, was itself repealed by the Real ID Act of 2005. We observe the modern marvel of when the ACLU can finally agree with the Secretary of DHS on something - that Real ID is dead. More is also included on the PASS Act.

With an upcoming hearing in Washington to evaluate the Real ID Act next week, Lee Tien articulates the standard for acceptable identity in America. Here's a hint: the Real ID Act is not part of the plan.

New legislation has been submitted in the U.S. Senate that would roll back parts of the REAL ID Act, including the identity vetting portion. Regarding ID Editor Zack Martin spoke with Janice Kephart, a member of the 9/11 Commission and director of national security policy at the Center for Immigration Studies, about the proposed law.

David Bacon explains that what the US government and the governments of other rich industrialized countries do through their actions and policies towards poorer and developing countries is, in fact, designed to benefit the economies and large corporations of those “developed” countries and that these actions and policies often lead to what he refers to as “forced migration”. The policies of the IMF (International Monetary Fund) and NAFTA (North American Free Trade Agreement) are terrible for working people of poor countries. In fact, the workers in both North and South America lost out with NAFTA. Workers in the U.S. lost when 800 jobs went to Mexico and Mexico lost a million jobs. Another way in which NAFTA creates poverty, for example, is that it allows U.S. corporations such as the huge food corporation of Archer Daniel Midlands to dump its products on the Mexican market at a very low price thus undercutting the price of local corn that has been grown by s¬¬mall farmers for centuries. As a result the local corn farmers have to go elsewhere to get money to feed their families. They often migrate to cities, to the U.S. and to the maquilladores --factories along the U.S.-Mexican border, which pay little and often mistreat workers. From 1994 when NAFTA went into effect until now about six million people have come to the U.S. from Mexico because there was no other way for their families to survive. Corporations want this flow of “cheap labor” because they profit from it but they want it in a certain controlled way in which people leave if they aren’t working and have no rights while they do work in the U.S. Twelve million people are now in the U.S. without visas and therefore have no political or labor rights. “Illegal” means you’re without rights and can be controlled. The same was true for the Chinese, Japanese and Filipino immigrants of the past. Notice as well the inherent racism, the stereotypes of “illegal” people are overwhelmingly people of color. The Real ID Act and the Patriot Act make working outside of federal recruitment plans mean one will go to prison, as thousands of people do. There is a court in Tucson, Arizona where so-called “illegals” are brought in wearing chains, and then approximately seventy people a day from this group go to federal prison, thus making an example of them for the others. As a result of the Real-ID Act, all American citizens will have an electronically readable ID card that is linked to the federal database by May 2008. This means that in three years we will have a National ID card system that is being unilaterally controlled by one organization (DHS) whether we want it or not. Organizations such as the ACLU are already exploring opportunities for litigation. Privacy advocates cite Nazi Germany and slippery slopes, while the government waves the anti-terrorism flag back in their faces. Compromises and alternate solutions abound. At Bank of America she was responsible for company-wide information security policies and procedures, support for the lines of business in their management of information risk, implementation of security technology, cyber forensics and investigations, and awareness for the company's leadership, associate base and outside suppliers. In that role she provided leadership for a number of company-wide initiatives designed to protect sensitive customer and company information. In addition, under her leadership the bank's corporate information security organization has been a leader in innovation, filing for numerous U.S. Patents in the areas of infrastructure risk management and information security. After many years of service on some of the industry's most important associations, advisory boards and think tanks, she was appointed in 2002 by the Secretary of the Treasury to serve as the financial services sector coordinator for critical infrastructure protection and homeland security. In that role, she established a Limited Liability Corporation which brought together 26 financial service trade associations, utilities and professional institutes to work in partnership with Treasury to create several important industry initiatives designed to ensure industry cooperation and resiliency. In April 2005, The Friends of a Child's Place, a Charlotte-based advocacy for the homeless, named her one of the "First Ladies of Charlotte" in recognition of her pioneering role in information security and her support for the Charlotte community. As a result of the Real-ID Act, all American citizens will have an electronically readable ID card that is linked to the federal database by May 2008. This means that in three years we will have a National ID card system that is being unilaterally controlled by one organization (DHS) whether we want it or not. Privacy advocates cite Nazi Germany and slippery slopes, while the government waves the anti-terrorism flag back in their faces. Compromises and alternate solutions abound. David Mortman, Chief Information Security Officer for Siebel Systems, Inc., and his team are responsible for Siebel Systems' worldwide IT security infrastructure, both internal and external. Dennis Bailey is the Chief Operating Officer for Comter Systems, a top-secret, 8(a) information technology and management consulting firm based out of Fairfax, Virginia. He is also the author of "The Open Society Paradox: Why the Twenty-First Century Calls for More Openness Not Less", a recently published book which makes the case for secure identification and information sharing. He is active in the fields of identification, information sharing and security. He was a participant in the Sub-group on Identification for the Markle Foundation Task Force on Terrorism. He participates on the ITAA's Identity Management Task Group and is a member of the Coalition for a Secure Driver's License. His education includes a master's degree in political science from American University, where he worked at the Center for Congressional and Presidential Studies.
