In this episode, Parm talks to Mark Mañago about his recent publication in PTJ about the changing landscape of community exercise classes. Parm and Mark review the results of the study's survey that asked exercise class participants with PD and exercise group leaders to identify facilitators and barriers to virtual and in-person class. They also discuss observed changes in activity level in the people surveyed. Parm and Mark brainstorm some real-world solutions to the barriers identified to help listeners start problem solving for their own classes and patients.
The listeners weigh in with some interesting and diverse questions, including: is a high intensity 45 minute boxing class too much? Are there ways to modify it? I talk about the extreme endurance hypothesis and why we need to pay more attention to the increasing incidence of heart problems among long-term hard core endurance enthusiasts. One listener who went from 17% fat to 13%, but lost muscle mass also, asks: how does one correct this? I go into detail about what makes refined industrial seed oils so unhealthy and discuss the one common dietary recommendation from Dr. Ted Naiman, Dr. Doug McGuff, and Robb Wolf, and explain why this one food is so important for overall health, and even cancer prevention. I also talk about the tremendous benefits that come from sprinting and the importance of formulating your own specific, strategic blend of various kinds of workouts to support health and longevity I then compare and contrast the benefits of fasting after endurance exercise and strength sessions: should you replenish after high intensity sessions to minimize the stress impact? Thanks for listening and please continue sending all your questions and comments to podcast@bradventures.com TIMESTAMPS: Dustin asks about his 45-minute rugged class in boxing at age 47. Is this going against the philosophy of HIRT vs. HIIT? [01:23] Mario's question is about there being a difference in your training regimen based on your fitness goals. [08:04] Jeff “Iron” Montgomery reminds us to tone it down. The extreme endurance exercise hypothesis is real and it's very, very dangerous to overdo it. [11:56] Mark says in his attempt to lose body fat, he also lost some lean body mass. This concerns him. [15:45] Scott Bellenger asks for an explanation of why refined industrial seed oils are bad for us. [20:21] David is questioning the idea of pushing yourself to failure. Isn't that risking injury? What's the best way to organize your classes so everyone gets the right level of challenge? We know that intensity matters but so does safety and a feeling of success. For individuals with Parkinson's over time their presentations can vary which can make it more challenging to design group classes for all levels of abilities. Must create a system or rules for who is appropriate for which type of class - cognitive vs physical challenges, safety. We share our top tips for successful classes working with individuals with more physical and cognitive challenges, what to consider, and what to avoid. Consider having: Smaller groups (4-8 people) Don't create stations that require a lot of transitioning in between - keep things in one main area Have help if able - caregivers, volunteers, students, etc Allow clients to collaborate together to create fun and community in class Use props to make activities bigger, allow more external focus, and make it more obvious for what is needed from participants Email Claire if you are interested in learning and talking more about slip and trip training at claire@neurocollaborative.com Anti-racist action: Working with our coach helps us to talk through and process things. We see how much we have to live in the gray areas because not everything is good or bad. Sometimes we can still support our morals and ethics without boycotting everything or going to the extremes.

In this episode, I explore which exercise classes are the best addition to a hikers training week. I have said many times that doing generic exercise classes are not the best for hikers. That is because I know following a structured, specific strength and conditioning program is the very best thing you can do to get ready for the trail. This is in regards to specificity, injury risk, time efficiency and effectiveness. However, if you are a hiker who loves your exercise classes, or you are stuck at home and are thinking about jumping on an online class, I would never try to stop you doing this... If you are in this situation, just know, there are some classes which are a bit more suited for hikers. And in this episode, I explain my thoughts here. You will learn: The best exercises classes for hikers (which I give my 'tick of approval') The unavoidable reason when a hiker should avoid a particular exercise class (there really is no arguing this...) A few exercise classes I generally don't recommend for hikers (I may ruffle a few feathers here...) A good approach to fitting exercise classes into your training (if they fit into a 'not recommended' category) == Need some help getting fit, strong and pain-free for you hiking? In this episode, Parm talks to Dr. Tara McIsaac about her recent study outlining characteristics of people with PD that determined exercise class prescription. Tara and Parm review the study results, including a group of clinical tests that may help PTs refer to appropriate programs. They also discuss the importance and logistics of communication between PTs and other exercise professionals. If you’re interested in community exercise in this population, this is a great listen! It's another week and still, all we're talking about is Coronavirus. Doug, Jen and Victoria are trying to bring you the stories that not everyone is talking about - the distilleries in the US and France that have completely shut down their alcohol and perfume production lines to help the community by making hand sanitizer, the virtual exercise classes taking over Instagram live and other streaming services to keep you mentally and physically in shape, and the huge contributions that ballparks around the country are making to keep their employees paid. We can't forget about the idiots winning the Darwin award this week, like the dumb kids in Florida who are still celebrating Spring Break and risk infecting everyone in their community and actress Evangeline Lilly's ridiculous stance on social distancing and quarantine. GuestKelly Donahue, PhD, NTCClinical Health Psychologist and Mind Body CoachKelly Donahue, PhD. trained in behavioral medicine and clinical psychology at the University of Maryland. After several years in practice and research, she realized that much of traditional psychology focused on disease and helping people to get by. Dr. Donahue wanted to focus on people's strengths and help them grow and thrive in mind and body. In order to be better equipped to do that, she obtained additional training in mind-body medicine from the Benson-Henry Institute and the Center for Mind-Body Medicine in DC. Dr. Donahue further expanded her toolbox with training as a coach from Mindvalley and training in holistic nutrition from the Nutritional Therapy Association. Dr. Donahue learned that once the nervous system becomes regulated, the focus can shift to true healing and growth. Dr. Donahue’s holistic approach combines these skills to help over-stressed men and women reduce anxiety, overcome overwhelm, and begin to heal chronic conditions to live the life they desire. Dr. Donahue has gone through her own journey with chronic pain and the stress of perfectionism, and she has used these skills to come out on the other side. Dr. Donahue work has been published in Health Psychology, Annals of Internal Medicine, Journal of the American Board of Family Practice, and Theranest among others. Dr. Donahue is passionate about teaching these skills with individual clients, through her group programs in The Healthy Change School, by speaking in the community, by serving as a consultant to health and wellness programs and companies, and through my book, Everyday Self-Care.
