In the Bhagavad-Gītā, Kṛṣṇa describes, bhoktāraṁ yajña-tapasāṁ sarva-loka-maheśvaram suhṛdaṁ sarva-bhūtānāṁ jñātvā māṁ śāntim ṛcchati (BG 5.29). He said, "If you want śānti, what is śānti? Peace. If you want to feel peaceful, which is impossible in this world, and especially in Silicon Valley, then there are three things that you can come to understand which will allow you that peace you are looking for." The first one is that if you want the love that you're seeking in this world to be fully reciprocated, then give your heart to The Personality of Godhead. That's what it bhoktāraṁ yajña-tapasāṁ means many people you give your love to can't give it back, true or false? But Kṛṣṇa can give unlimited love back. Whatever we give Him, even the tiniest gesture, if you just one day, unsophisticated, without any context, you just had an urge to offer God a little flower or leaf that you found, and you just offered it in a simple way—no ritual involved, just from the heart—He will accept it. That's one of the main themes of the Bhagavad-Gītā. If you're sincere and you try to offer something, then Kṛṣṇa will accept it, and He'll reciprocate directly with you, and He is only waiting for that. That is what bhakti means, "I understand that I'm looking for love in all the wrong places. I'm just trying to give my affection to those who can't fully reciprocate it." Incidentally, when we develop this sense of loving Kṛṣṇa, then we're able to more fully love everyone. Because our capacity for love for individual entities separated from Kṛṣṇa is limited. We may love them, and then we may hate them. But there's a deeper level of love when we understand that everybody's part of Kṛṣṇa: every animal, every plant, even some of the 52 cousins that we have that we don't like at all. We even love them because we know they're part of Kṛṣṇa. It's mentioned in the Bhāgavatam. Kṛṣṇa says to Uddhava, "Sometimes sādhus live by the Gaṅgā, but then they take it for granted because it's in their backyard. And then they say, 'I'll go somewhere else to take a bath.'" So one has to study the mantra and remember how one is fortunate, and also stay in a humble state of mind. Be a beginner. Start over every day. Don't think, "I know this. I've got this. I've done this before." Instead, start over. "I'm helpless. I don't know anything." In tamas, we're helpless. If you've ever felt helpless—for instance, if you have some addiction and you can't give up, or you feel so depressed that you can't do anything—this is the modality of tamas. Above tamas comes rajas. Rajas is the modality of intense activity. That is, we are creative. In rajas however, the setback is that no matter what we get, it's not enough, because we remain in that active and creative mode. We attain something, we create something, but it has to become more. We may attain a position—for instance, you may become a city council member, but then think, "Well, that's nothing. I want to be the mayor." When you become mayor, you may think, "Well, why don't I become governor?" And after becoming governor etc etc. There's never an endpoint. In modern parlance, it's called the hedonic treadmill; that is, no matter what I get, it's not enough. And there are plenty of songs and poems from ancient times and modern times expressing the experience of being in rajas and tamas. For instance, "I Can't Get No Satisfaction" and many, many more, like "Too Much Is Not Enough," etc. And then there's the highest of the modalities in this world, called sattva. Sattva is the modality of clarity, where we see ourselves beyond the body. Gone is the drive to attain something, because we realize we already are something. We are something that's so amazing. And as Kṛṣṇa describes in the Bhagavad Gītā, when you see yourself beyond the body, you realize that this is the most amazing thing: the soul itself. Kṛṣṇa says 'āścaryavat', he calls it amazing, 'āścaryavat.' Some see it as amazing, some hear of it as amazing. And when you analyze who you really are, you examine your consciousness, or you become introspective, then you don't feel that you have to attain anything necessarily, because you already are something, and you're here right now, and you feel tuṣṭa, or satisfaction in the self. This is sattva. But there's a modality beyond sattva, which is called śuddha-sattva, which is a completely transcendental realm—transcendental to the modes—meaning you've gone beyond any of the modalities of the material world. And this is pure consciousness. So the perfection of the teachings of Bhagavad-gītā and Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam is to come to that pure consciousness. Question: What we can do from our part is to imbibe more during these readings and make the most out of whatever we are investing here. My point is that if you're processing something and you're also hearing, the mind is more absorbent. Any good hearing and chanting session leaves us with more questions than answers, because then we are eager to hear the next time. Even in reading continuously in a canto, oftentimes, the questions that come up early on are answered as we continue, or they're answered in discussion. I found the session last night to be especially helpful, as brainstorming is really powerful amongst devotees. There is a synergy that occurs in discussions, and Kṛṣṇa manifests out of that because of the goodwill of the devotees. When inflation is wiping out pay and increasing numbers of people are homeless in the richest countries in the world, is it any wonder that more people are starting to look favourably at the alternative (ie, at socialism)? We talked about the militarisation of the police as governments prepare to suppress rising dissent and unrest. And we talked about the militarisation of the economy as governments prepare to put the whole of society on a war footing. We also looked at the role of the new home secretary Shabana Mahmood, a muslim woman whose job will be to front up the ruling class's pro-zionist, anti-free-speech and anti-immigrant regimes here in Britain. We discussed the situation where police in Britain continue to carry out mass arrests of peaceful protestors holding cardboard signs in solidarity with proscribed organisation Palestine Action, even as British armed forces continue to participate directly in the genocide in Gaza. With all this evidence, it's time we woke up to the fact that neither the capitalist state machinery nor the bourgeois electoral system can be used to solve the very urgent problems we face. Abandon envy The elements in the definition of envy are: The elements in the definition of envy are: Envy is a noun—a feeling of discontented or resentful longing aroused by someone else's possessions, qualities, or luck. What you want is Prabhupāda's definition. So, he says here. Prabhupāda, “Envy means the cow has got a right to live. He does not allow the cow to live. That is envy. You cannot understand this. Suppose you are walking. You have got a right to walk. I have got… if I kill you, you cannot walk. That is envious. Everyone's got a right to live, just like the camel. God has given their food. They are accustomed to eat these thorny twigs. So Krishna has given that, 'Let them eat and live.' Why you should interfere with his living condition? Do not interfere with others' right.” The Mahābhārata says, “Non-envy is always desiring the welfare of others.” That's non-envy. Sajjana-Toṣaṇī. What is envy? Are envy and love opposed to each other? “To become happy on seeing others' distress and to become distressed on seeing others' happiness is called envy. Envy and love are contradictory. Wherever there is envy, there is no question of love, and wherever there is love, there is no question of envy.” It goes on and on from there. There's a lot on envy, but I know what you're saying. There's a traditional kind of idea about it, but Prabhupāda gives it in a more existential way, that other people have their food, they have their space, they have their quota. And you think, “Why should you have your quota? I should have everybody's quota.” Like, it bugs them that other people are walking around, so they just stamp on it or kill them, or put a fence up and get rid of them. So that's how Prabhupāda mentions envy. There's niyama-āgraha and niyama-agraha. Niyama-āgraha means to do something, but to not be aware that you're doing it actually, you're just doing it by rote. And the other one, niyama-agraha, means to avoid doing it altogether. Finding that balance is the perfection of practice. In that, I'm doing it, but I'm also aware that I'm doing it, and I'm doing it with deliberation, as that's when the chanting becomes really powerful. So Haridas Thakur in the Harinam Chintamani said you should make whatever arrangements you have to on a daily basis in order to be aware that you are chanting and to be very deliberate about it. And if you find yourself falling into a rut—that either I'm not doing it or I'm doing it, but I'm not deliberately doing it—then adjust. Move your environment around, get new association, do something. And that's why we have these japa circles as a kind of booster so that when we come together, it gives us more awareness that we're chanting and the importance of chanting, and so forth. When we meditate on Kṛṣṇa, we avail ourselves to everything. As parts and parcels of Kṛṣṇa, that meditation on Kṛṣṇa is not only fascinating but it is also completely satisfying. So, those who are overly attached to the material varieties for their own enjoyment can't do that- rāga .Bhaya means people become discouraged because of their experience in the material world. They have been let down one too many times in their relationships; therefore, they have fear of personal relationships. It's a psychological anomaly. And thirdly, people become angry. I met such an angry person two days ago when we went on saṅkīrtan. That was Saturday, I think. There were two young men standing near where we were distributing books. I was searching the area for somebody to talk to, and two young men were there, and one of them was decidedly angry. Krodha, that's the third anomaly: they become angry. He was a bystander; I was showing book to his friend but the bystander had a scowl on his face. When I asked about karma, 'You believe in karma?' he said he didn't believe in it. And he said, 'Because it judges people. Is this book telling what's good and bad and what's morality?' He became indignant by the fact that we were presenting something that we were calling authoritative. He was resisting that idea vehemently, so much so that I could see he was angry. When I asked him a few questions about it, he became disturbed, and he walked away. End of conversation, but I felt the anger. So these three things: rāga—attachment to the material world, which is a big mistake because we can't really experience the elements of the material world. They are only reflected on the imagery on the screen of our mind. And then we watch them and think that we're interacting with them, but it's the interaction of watching a movie screen and feeling emotion, we are not really part of that. It's illusory. And then the fear that we experience because of disappointment with personal relationships over many, many lifetimes, that's also not necessary. Krodha comes from overthinking. Too many people go off-road and try to find their own philosophy due to a sense of false ego, that they want to come up with something original. Everybody's a muni, but not a very good one, especially nowadays. And Prabhupāda, I heard him say just two days ago when I was listening to my little red box early in the morning, he was saying, 'We're safe because we don't make anything up. We just follow Kṛṣṇa.' So these three things, Kṛṣṇa says, "Vīta-rāga-bhaya-krodha": you have to give up this inordinate attachment to the variety of the material world. Senate Commerce Committee Chairman Ted Cruz said he would introduce legislation to establish AI sandboxes to allow companies “room to breathe” without running up against regulations. Cruz announced that proposal as well as a legislative framework for AI policy ahead of a Wednesday hearing before the Subcommittee on Science, Manufacturing, and Competitiveness on the administration's recent AI Action Plan. The concept of regulatory sandboxes were among the more than 90 policy recommendations outlined in that document. Cruz said during the hearing: “Under the Sandbox Act, an AI user developer can identify obstructive regulations and request a waiver or a modification, which the government may grant for two years via a written agreement that must include a participant's responsibility to mitigate health or consumer risks,” adding that “a regulatory sandbox is not a free pass. People creating or using AI still have to follow the same laws as everyone else.” Drew Myklegard is stepping down from his role as deputy federal CIO after nearly four years, FedScoop has learned. Two sources with knowledge of the matter said Myklegard told colleagues he's taking a role in the private sector and that his last day will be Sept. 22. A holdover from the Biden administration, Myklegard was appointed to the deputy federal CIO role in early 2022, after a more than eight-year stint in supporting IT operations at the Department of Veterans Affairs. During his time in the Office of the Federal CIO, he championed a number of key governmentwide technology modernization initiatives, including rolling out a new policy reforming federal cloud security authorizations under FedRAMP and guidance on how agencies acquire and inventory AI tools, among others. Highlands Community Charter and Technical Schools opened in Sacramento in 2014 with high ideals — to help adult students, many formerly incarcerated or new immigrants, to earn a diploma, improve English language skills, or learn a trade. Now, the school is an example lawmakers and advocates point to as a reason for increasing charter school oversight. A state audit found the charter received millions of dollars in funding for which it was not eligible, assigned teachers to classes they were not credentialed to teach, and avoided standardized testing, in addition to spending on non-education-related items such as a trip to Paris and leasing a semi-professional ballpark. You can add this to your portfolio. "I was there. I chanted Hare Kṛṣṇa. I got up early, I dropped what I was doing, and I sat and chanted with the devotees, gave full attention to The Holy Name." This some people don't achieve after millions and millions of lifetimes, but all of you have this conviction: 'Vāsudevaḥ sarvam iti,' Vasudev is everything. You also have śraddhā, which means, "śraddhā-śabde-viśvāsa sudṛḍha niścaya, kṛṣṇe bhakti kaile sarva-karma kṛta haya" (CC Madhya 22.62). That if I chant Hare Kṛṣṇa and I give my full attention to the holy name, then everything else will be perfectly executed in my life. Nothing else is needed. "Vedeṣu yajñeṣu tapaḥsu caiva, dāneṣu yat puṇya-phalaṁ pradiṣṭam, atyeti tat sarvam idaṁ viditvā, yogī paraṁ sthānam upaiti cādyam" (BG 8.28). That is Kṛṣṇa, who assures us at the end of the eighth chapter of the Bhagavad Gita, that if you just give yourself to Kṛṣṇa and the process of devotional service, you achieve the results of everything else you're trying to achieve in your life. This is why you're here. This is very deep. So this is no small accomplishment to be able to sit and chant Hare Kṛṣṇa. Most people can't do it. The mind is raging, there's problems to solve. "I feel depressed, I feel attracted to something else." But the fact that you show up means that you have evolved spiritually over many, many lifetimes to come to this position. So take advantage of it, that you know this, and that you know that all the Vedas are pointing to one thing—the holy name. And that is by taking part every day in chanting the Hare Kṛṣṇa mantra. Finishing 16 rounds, you're following the instructions of the Ācārya, which means you're safe. The Department of Health and Human Services has made ChatGPT available to all of its employees effective immediately, according to a Tuesday departmentwide email obtained by FedScoop. In that message, HHS Deputy Secretary Jim O'Neill said the rollout of the generative AI platform follows a directive from President Donald Trump's AI Action Plan for agencies to ensure that workers who could benefit from the technology have access to it. “This tool can help us promote rigorous science, radical transparency, and robust good health,” O'Neill said. “As Secretary Kennedy said, ‘The AI revolution has arrived.'” O'Neill provided workers with instructions on how to log on to use the tool, as well as some warnings about how to treat outputs. He told workers to “be skeptical of everything you read, watch for potential bias, and treat answers as suggestions,” and directed them to weigh original sources and counterarguments prior to making a major decision. The General Services Administration has created a new office within the Federal Acquisition Service focused on streamlining the agency's procurement of common goods and services, a GSA spokesperson confirmed Tuesday. Acting GSA Administrator Michael Rigas recently signed the order establishing the Office of Centralized Acquisition Services (OCAS), the spokesperson said, describing it as a “centralized, enterprise-wide approach.” “By leveraging one federal wallet, GSA will deliver significant savings to the taxpayer, greater efficiencies, and reduced duplication, enabling agencies to focus on their core missions,” the spokesperson said in a written statement. GSA senior executive Thomas Meiron will serve as the office's assistant commissioner, the GSA said. Meiron has been with the GSA for over three decades, according to his LinkedIn profile. He most recently served as the acting assistant commissioner for the agency's Office of Customer and Stakeholder Engagement. The move directly supports President Donald Trump's executive order, signed in March, to consolidate federal procurement in the GSA. “I welcome every noise around me. No matter what it is: a duck, a fish, a deer farting. [...] You invite it all. And [...] this is [...] when you realize [that] every inch of this planet is occupied and we are sharing and coexisting with other species - [so] how can you ever be alone?” In this edition of Earth.fm podcast Wind Is the Original Radio, curator Melissa Pons speaks to Serge Bulat, a multidisciplinary artist whose work - which spans and hybridizes music, exhibitions, immersive games, radio, field recording, and psychological installations - explores the edges of performance, sound, perception, and identity. Serge is from a Moldovan town divided from Ukraine by a river, with family hailing from both worlds. For this reason, borders are “a prominent subject in [his] work”, which seeks to question topics around unity, differences and similarities, and the utopian aspiration of finding “ways to live in a borderless world”. Earlier this year, he released Phonomundi: Selected Recordings of Heritage Sites and Traditions 2017-2024, an album which draws upon years of recording, sharing, and contributing to projects, causes, and stories close to his heart. Phonomundi is also about engaging with “our absolutely disastrous path away from respecting our ears and respecting our culture and respecting our environment”. Against a backdrop of woozy compositions by Serge, featuring nature soundscape recordings, he and Melissa discuss the trials of having a “noisy” mind, which feels like “war in your head” and means that “it's hard to stop the thinking process” - but which can also lead recordists to “forget about [them]self and [...] start thinking about communities, people that are affected, and [how] that [can be] such an ego drop”. Serge also talks about how ‘now' is illusory, and his “weird relationship with time”: “I guess it might be some form of synesthesia, because I feel time; I feel its thickness and I feel its qualities.” The flow of time is “one of the driving forces behind [him] doing what [he's] doing”, while field recording can provide “the nowest now that there can ever be”. He describes how, after experiencing difficulties with conventional mediation, he managed to develop his own system of meditation around listening, where “time stops [...] [and] you find that serenity and that absolute calmness and, for me, this is when I stop the noise”. As he says, “We're all pieces of [...] a bigger body and we're [...] made of the same substance. [...] I always struggle to put anything like that in words [...]. It's easier for me to put it in music. [...] This is what music and sound does [...] and words don't.” Together, Serge and Melissa also address topics including: The relevance of creative work in the face of the climate catastrophe and alarming political developments across the world - including how music, as a precursor to language, can be “a shortcut [...] to somebody's mind, heart and soul”. While also acknowledging the necessity of “dig[ging] deeper [to] understand the issues [with which] we're living” Wanting to make work of significance despite “sonic pollution, [...] over-tourism, over-consumerism, weird politics that make zero sense when it comes to preserving [...] or nurturing stuff that matters and makes us us” - and especially in light of the fact that everything we know is at risk of “disappearing just by [the] pressing [of] one button” Learning to love silence. As Serge says, “We need to reset our hearing. [...] I feel like [silence] makes the ear function better” How it is possible to “feel and hear” bees' moods from the frequencies of their buzzing, and how bee therapy (‘apitherapy') - known since the time of Ancient Egypt - can improve anxiety, depression, and even respiratory conditions. “What bl[ows] my mind [about them]”, says Serge, is their “self-sufficiency, community, [and the way that they can] solv[e] a crisis [by] relying on each other” Serge's experience of an immersive exhibition in Kraków, Into the Darkness, which replicates what it's like to not be able to see, with blind guides providing insights about their lives, and the equivalence of this to animals replying on different senses than our own (such as spiders and vibrations, or snakes using infrared thermal radiation) The appeal of twilight, “when everything starts becoming blurry” and takes on the quality of a dream, and “the thrill of [darkness] and [the way that] [Serge's] imagination sometimes takes [him to other] places”. In Episode 438 of Hidden Forces, Demetri Kofinas speaks with Charles Calomiris, former Chief Economist at the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency, about his forthcoming paper “How Stablecoins Will Transform Banking,” which is based on a presentation he delivered at the Hoover Institution's annual monetary policy conference this past May. Demetri and Charles spend the first hour of their conversation laying out what stablecoins are and why Calomiris believes they are poised to transform our standard units of account through a revolution in real-time payments and a wholesale reinvention of the banking system, monetary policy, and the role of the dollar internationally. They discuss the significance of the recently signed “Genius Act,” explore the importance of bank charter modernization, and consider the broad public benefits of separating loans from deposits—ranging from faster, programmable settlement and greater competition in financial services to a reduction of systemic risk in areas where bank lending has become increasingly overconcentrated. The second hour is devoted to exploring some of the most important short- and long-term implications of stablecoin adoption, including: (1) Antitrust concerns over natural monopolies and network effects in stablecoin payment rails. (2) Near-term boost to demand for U.S. government debt, including the potential issuance of tokenized bills for gross real-time settlement. (3) Longer-term prospect of moving away from the dollar as the primary unit of account toward consumer bundles tied to assets, goods, and services that better reflect people's spending patterns—along with the implications for monetary policy, seigniorage, capital flows, and the preservation of purchasing power in these new currencies.
