Śrīla Prabhupāda gave some instructions about japa, and in one of them, he talks about how japa is forced meditation. One of the meanings of that is that one may sit and meditate, and that requires one's own introspection, whereas Kṛṣṇa's name has its own force because He's personally present there. But we are responsible for being aware of Kṛṣṇa's names when we're chanting. That's listed amongst all the what we call ten offenses, which is really eleven, because the eleventh one we add on, is all important. Because when we chant, the main point is to listen very carefully and show respect that Kṛṣṇa is present in His names. Kṛṣṇa has this inclination: He is ready to pour out mercy unlimitedly to any personality. We find the key here in Prahlāda Mahārāja, that if one imbibes this mood of service for service, then that's the moment we feel satisfied, but that's also the moment Kṛṣṇa takes notice of us and unleashes an ocean of mercy into our lives. For devotees who realize that this is our eternal relationship, they can't do enough at every second to give to Kṛṣṇa, because ātmānaṁ akhilātmanāṁ—the principle is, He's the soul of our soul. So, it's a practical realization in the end to know the science: sarvopādhi-vinirmuktaṁ tat-paratvena nirmalam hṛṣīkeṇa hṛṣīkeśa- sevanaṁ bhaktir ucyate This is called devotional service (bhakti) when you realize that my senses actually belong to Kṛṣṇa, and everything else belongs to Kṛṣṇa, and therefore I'll use everything in His service. And in the process, we purify our senses. The Klamath Mountains are a rich site of diversity in Northern California and Southern Oregon, celebrated in Michael Kauffmann and Justin Garwood's book The Klamath Mountains, a Natural History, from Kauffmann's Back Country Press.  Kauffmann's most recent book, co-written with Matt Ritter, is California Trees, was just awarded The National Outdoor Book Award, and in honor of the seeds of that book being planted by all that Back Country Press does in this world, this week we revisit the fertile Klamath Mountains and our last conversation with Michael and Justin Garwood! Enjoy! This week, we take a broader look at the mighty, now-undammed Klamath River and its namesake region, exploring the importance of knowing any place better from multiple perspectives for truly effective and durable conservation to be possible.  We're in conversation with Michael Kauffman, research plant ecologist, educator, and founder with his botanist wife Allison of the ecologically focused Backcountry Press, and Justin Garwood, Environmental Scientist for the California Department of Fish and Wildlife, with a focus on fisheries. Michael and Justin have spent the better part of the last decade curating and editing a cohort of 34 expert contributors to a new, and, really, the first comprehensive, Natural History of the Klamath Mountains, one of the most biodiverse temperate mountain ranges on earth. This japa is described as a kind of self-examination. It's possible to live an unexamined life. Socrates said, "The unexamined life isn't worth living." There's no value in it. Worth means you're getting something out of it. One feature of japa is that we have 108 contiguous decisions to make. Each bead is a new decision: "Will I meditate on the mantra that goes with this bead?" And you can see, if you go for the next one, you think, "I already did that?" So now I'm not going to concentrate, then you can go for eight beads or 107 more without thinking of it. But if we train our mind to make a decision, use our free will to come back to each bead individually, it's a meticulous kind of training for the mind. Because the mind wants randomness in order to escape reality, which is that we're not this body, we are not part of the world. It's been conjured. And we don't like to be challenged our sense of reality. But it's not painful if we face reality, because reality is beautiful and abundant. Krishna is friendly. So if we train our minds that every bead is a new choice, and remember that between the gap of one bead and the next, we have to renew our decision to meditate on that next bead. If we can practice that, then the mind becomes trained to stay constantly in that decision-making process until it becomes completely natural to only think of the holy name and stay fixed there. Otherwise, if we let it descend into randomness, then it becomes like a dog. If you've ever met a dog—I have—who wasn't trained properly, he jumped on everything, everyone. Doesn't matter what you tell him, he just goes nuts because he wasn't trained early enough on. The Trump administration is aiming to release its six-part national cybersecurity strategy in January, according to multiple sources familiar with the document. The document, which is a mere five pages long, will possibly be followed by an executive order to implement the new strategy. The administration has been soliciting feedback in recent days, which one source considered more of a “messaging” document than anything, with more important work to follow. According to sources familiar with the strategy, the six “pillars” focus on cyber offense and deterrence; aligning regulations to make them more uniform; bolstering the cyber workforce; federal procurement; critical infrastructure protection; and emerging technologies. An opening section of the draft offers a Trumpian call for a more muscular approach to cyberspace. Despite its short length — the Biden administration's cybersecurity strategy was 35 pages long — it touches on a significant number of topics. Those subjects include cybercrime, China, artificial intelligence, post-quantum cryptography and more. A source told CyberScoop the administration appeared genuinely interested in soliciting feedback on the strategy to incorporate or change. The release date of the strategy is fluid. While the administration is targeting January, its publication might follow the broader national security strategy. In other news: Anthropic's Claude for Government is now available across the Department of Health and Human Services, according to an internal announcement obtained by FedScoop. The launch was announced in an email to staff Wednesday from HHS Deputy Secretary Jim O'Neill, and comes two months after the department made ChatGPT available to all of its workers. O'Neill encouraged workers to use either ChatGPT or Claude for their queries or “ask both and compare the responses.” He said in his email: “HHS users can work confidently and securely, with minimal restrictions on the types of information entered, while maintaining full compliance with federal cybersecurity and privacy standards. With this release, we are ensuring that all divisions, programs, and employees have access to two secure cutting-edge AI capabilities.” The email doesn't mention specific contracting details of how HHS is providing access to the tool, but ChatGPT at least was provided through the company's nearly free OneGov deal with the General Services Administration. As prabhu mentioned, we talked a lot about what our goals were. You know, before getting married, we wanted to make sure that we were in sync—what we wanted to do with our lives, how we wanted to serve our Gurudeva and the mission. We found that we had a lot of things in common. Of course, when you're young and you get married, you don't know what's going to happen down the road. So we have always kept Kṛṣṇa in the center. Whatever was best for our service to our Gurudeva, and whatever helped us to remember and serve Kṛṣṇa, that's how we made our decisions — whatever was best for our service. Throughout life, we all have big decisions to make, right? We've always made those big decisions based on what was best for our service. I guess some of the principles are learning how to communicate well with each other, to understand that we're in each other's corner. We support each other. We have each other's back, so to speak. It's a rough world out there, and you want to know that when you come home, you have someone who is there to support you.I don't mean just saying, “You're always right,” or something like that, but showing love and support. Learn how to communicate with each other so that you truly understand what the other is saying because we have different ways of communicating. In the first year or two of our marriage, that was the thing we worked on the most: clear and honest communication. We have disagreements. We don't have fights, but we have disagreements, and we can work them out. We can talk it out. I feel really fortunate to have someone who always has that mentality. As I said, the big thing was making sure that our goals were in line and that we stayed true to those goals. A bill that would overhaul how the federal government purchases software has found itself in a familiar place: moving forward in the House while awaiting Senate consideration with just a few weeks left in the congressional calendar. The Strengthening Agency Management and Oversight of Software Assets (SAMOSA) Act advanced out of the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee on Tuesday, teeing it up for a vote in the full chamber. The SAMOSA Act, which would direct federal agencies to assess their software licensing practices and streamline future IT buying decisions to avoid duplicative purchases, was reintroduced in the House in September following the Senate's move to do the same in July. The bill passed the House a year ago but stalled out in the upper chamber, despite backing from a host of software and IT trade groups, including the Computer & Communications Industry Association, the Alliance for Digital Innovation, NetChoice, OpenPolicy and the Software Information Industry Association. Congress has been trying to move forward with the SAMOSA Act since at least 2022. House Oversight Committee Chair James Comer, R-Ky., noted during Tuesday's markup that the current iteration of the SAMOSA Act is “identical” to what passed the chamber last year. In other news: The Small Business Administration may soon be forced to confront the flawed rollout of an online certification platform it launched late in the Biden administration.The House on Monday passed a bill that would require the SBA to implement nearly a dozen recommendations made in a Government Accountability Office report about the agency's Unified Certification Platform for small business contracting assistance. The lawmakers behind the SBA IT Modernization Reporting Act — Reps. Gil Cisneros, D-Calif., and Brian Jack, R-Ga. — believe the legislation will help the agency avoid various pitfalls that plagued the UCP, helping it better develop and manage digital projects going forward. The UCP project was launched in 2023 with the goal of easing small businesses' interactions with the SBA's contract assistance programs. But deployment of the platform was delayed and applications for certification were paused in August 2024. The UCP went live two months later, but according to the GAO, work to migrate data and secure the system was incomplete.
