Cleveland Heights Mayor Kahlil Seren posted a 15-minute video on social media Wednesday, denying that his wife made antisemitic remarks in text messages and conversation. Residents angrily confronted him at Monday night's City Council meeting, demanding his resignation. He has been under fire since March, when former Akron Mayor resigned as city administrator just three months into his tenure, saying the job was untenable because of a relative of the mayor. Questions about the actions of the mayor's wife, Natalie McDaniel, have persisted. The council will hold a special committee meeting later Friday in which they'll discuss the mayor's comments. We will discuss the mayor's response and what led to it to begin Friday's “Sound of Ideas Reporters Roundtable.” We will also talk about some of the other top stories of the week including, the city of Cleveland and Cuyahoga County cutting ties this week with the Greater Cleveland Partnership. The GCP, the region's chamber of commerce, sided with the Browns ownership by endorsing the plan to leave downtown for a new football complex in Brook Park.

As a native of Lancaster, Ohio, with more than three decades of experience as a business journalist, Rebecca Fannin is well suited to tell the story of industry in the Midwest. In Silicon Heartland: Transforming the Midwest From Rust Belt to Tech Belt, she traces the region's tumultuous history, from its heyday as a stronghold of solid, factory jobs that created comfortable middle-class lives for its residents, to its struggles with globalization that saw those same factory jobs sent overseas, leaving residents out of work. Now though, the Midwest is having a resurgence as major companies, venture capitalists, and entrepreneurs are turning their eyes inland, away from the coasts. Cities and towns that were once overlooked are receiving renewed interests and investments as tech innovators look to grow their businesses in a region of the U.S. that is eager to welcome them. As she road trips across Middle America, Fannin documents the unique opportunities and the enterprising minds that are turning the Midwest into a high-tech hub. Silicon Heartland is an inspiring an optimistic book that highlights the visionary work being done in an often overlooked region.rnrnFannin will be joined by Baiju Shah, president and CEO of Greater Cleveland Partnership and Ray Leach, CEO of JumpStart Inc., and Matt Buder Shapiro of Vytalize Health for a conversation about the Midwest's new tech-centered focus on manufacturing, and what it means for Northeast Ohio.rnrnRebecca Fannin is the author of four books. Her creative use of tag lines like "Internships are like broccoli (they're good for you)!" show a commitment to rebranding the image of Career services. Jessica's passionate and creative approach enhances Cleveland Sate's ability to weather the storms of student engagement, pandemics and rising unemployment rates. Student "walk in Wednesdays" went virtual during the pandemic and every Thursday students can dive deep into a professional development topic co-hosted by Career Services and an employer in the region. Employers have many ways to engage with students to "Hire a Vike" and connect to talent for their internship program. CSU even recognized employers may need resources to run their internships and have created an internship toolkit. Jessica stressed the important of AND/BOTH thinking. The concept of not tradeoffs but how do you add more to service more is serving her students and employers well. When asked to provide advice for students Jessica simply shared "Be yourself" and "Practice, Practice, Practice" . Knowing your story is such great advice because truly, you are the only you. Practice your story, practice working, use school projects as practice. Robert went to the University of Toledo and at the time he did not see his career possibilities in Northeast Ohio. While Robert did relocate, his passion for the region has not waned. He returns to teach Cleveland area companies how to create internship programs. He literally wrote the book on creating an internship program – Total Internship Management.Intern Bridge is a research and consulting firm, focused on experiential learning from the perspective of the employer. Intern Bridge uses research-based guidelines to advise employers on the creation of a successful internship program. Intern Bridge conducts a national internship and co-op study on college campuses since 2008. About 5 years ago they created a similar study asking questions of their employer partners. They use these results to focus in on what truly matters to students and employers. They have identified 7 key variables for an employer to focus in on creating a successful program. The first to keys are: · The organization is ready, and the team is committed· Create an intern work plan, like a syllabus for a course but more than thatThe Total Internship Management Workshop guides employers through the 7 key areas. The courses were taught in Northeast Ohio through NOCHE in the past. This fall Intern Bridge and Robert will return to the area to bring back this important workshop to the region. Make sure to subscribe to our newsletter to get an update on how to register for this event. Intern Bridge consults with small, medium, and large companies. 65% of the interns surveyed worked for companies with less than 500 employees. Small to mid-sized business really do drive the economy. The internship experience consists of three main categoriesCultureProfessional DevelopmentWork It is key to ensure that interns experience a normalized experience as it relates to culture and professional development. The work may be different, but when the other 2/3 of the experience is similar and more equitable – satisfaction goes up. The cash heading to Cuyahoga and Summit counties in opioid case settlements has topped $65 million and continues to climb, which makes us wonder whether we are getting more than we actually spent on the crisis. That’s where we start the conversation on the first October episode of This Week in the CLE, the analysis of the news by the journalists of cleveland.com. Laura Johnston and I cohost.Criminal justice editor Kris Wernowsky provides the details on the growing opioid settlements and talks about the tangible costs, like autopsies, and the less visible costs, such as helping people overcome addiction. Kris also talks about the latest attempt by the drug companies to kick the Cleveland judge off of all of the lawsuits governments have filed involving the crisis.Kris also offers insights into a multimillion dollar pyramid scheme with cheese puffs at the center and some interesting characters, including a woman who twice hosted something called the Lingerie Bowl. The scam cost a bunch of people their life savings, and two people who carried out the scheme were sentenced this week in Cuyahoga County.New information about a felon photographed with a gun and a lot of cash on Mayor Frank. Jackson’s driveway closes the Kris segment, as Kris explains how public documents identify the man in the photo as a member of a criminal gang.Reporter Pete Krouse joins the podcast to talk about the battle of South Euclid, between the City Council and the municipal court judge.Pete also talks about the Greater Cleveland Partnership’s new approach to endorsing proposed tax increases on the ballot. And Pete lays out the question that is on the minds of a lot of civic leaders these days: What does an inclusive economy mean? It’s a question that is central to several discussions taking place this year with an aim of mapping prosperity for the region The next edition of Cleveland Connects will get at that question with a panel discussion. As the US central bank, the Federal Reserve formulates and implements monetary policy—the actions undertaken by a central bank to influence the availability and cost of money and credit to help promote national economic goals—provides payment services to financial institutions and the US government, and supervises banking and other financial institutions. There are 1,000 employees over 3 locations that fall under the Cleveland office – Cleveland, Pittsburgh and Cincinnati. The internship program is primarily in Cleveland, but this summer an intern has been added to the Pittsburgh location. Average intern class is 18-20 students. The Federal Reserve Bank does hire from their internship program. They are focusing on increasing their diversity in hiring and go to national conferences for this initiative: National Black MBA Association & Prospanica.Interns tend to work in the research department – economics, finance, IT. They look for students with at least a 3.0 GPA who are willing to learn, ask questions and have strong communications skills. A housing allowance is also provided for our of town interns. Day in the life – Last year’s interns helped plan the Economic Policy summit we hosted last year. They managed social media and greeted guests. Some of the IT interns worked on application development projects. Some students attended an actual bank exam. Interns go through HR orientation and receive mentors as well. Stephanie also meets with them throughout the summer, so the students have another resource for questions. What makes it Rock - Kick off luncheon with VP, tour of Cleveland on Lolly the Trolley, volunteer day at the Cleveland Foodbank, brown bag lunches with the leaders, Intern Expo – at the end of July the interns present a tri-fold board to visualize the work that they did for the summer. Everyone in the company is invited to the Intern Expo. This year Stephanie is adding a Strengths Finder assessment and training on communication styles.
