Tim Conway Jr. Show Hour-1 (7.9) Andy Reismeyer is filling in for Tim Conway Jr. and this one's an absolute vibe. He breaks down the lost art of the guitar solo and why it still matters to music culture, then confesses how he once joined a youth group camp and shredded a solo just to get close to a girl. We've all been there. From there it only gets better. Andy tackles the mystery of the office chairs nobody can seem to adjust, survives another brutal heatwave, and delivers a weather report you didn't know you needed, all while giving props to Leo Stallworth for his low-key poetic news storytelling. Then things get nostalgic and a little chaotic. Andy digs into the closing of Fiesta Village Family Fun Park in Colton and what that means for a generation of teens losing a rite of passage, plus the wild local legend connecting it to the origins of Taco Bell. He closes it out with the unhinged shenanigans he and his friends pulled as kids, including the classic fake-thumbnail-in-the-salsa restaurant stunt. It's funny, it's real, it's peak Southern California radio. Hit play, laugh out loud, and pass it to a friend who needs it. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Why Your Guitar Solos Don't Sound Musical (And How to Fix Them)

Send Steve a Text MessageYour guitar solo can have the “right” notes and still feel wrong. The gap is usually groove. We jump into a practical, no-hype approach to soloing that starts where real music starts: locking to the beat. Using a “Groovy Fine Blues in B Minor” backing track as the example, we focus on finding the quarter note, then treating the eighth note as the true pulse for most lead guitar. From there, we show how the B minor pentatonic becomes a usable palette when your timing is solid, even if you only touch a couple of strings and a small note set.We also get specific about how to create motion without falling into frantic shredding. If 16th notes at tempo feel out of reach, we talk through how to imply that subdivision with hammer-ons and pull-offs so your lines still carry energy. Then we zoom in on phrasing: thinking like a singer, leaving space, and using silence as part of the message. A simple idea like repetition, in rhythm or in note choice, turns a few notes into something listeners can actually remember. From there, we build the next layers that make solos sound “human”: dynamics through pick attack and volume control, plus vocal tools like slides, bends, and vibrato that help the guitar sing instead of sounding like typed notes. We wrap by looking at register, when to stay low and quiet, when to climb for impact, and how intentional practice with one good backing track can beat mindless track-hopping. If this helps, subscribe, share it with a guitarist friend, and leave a review with the one groove or phrasing habit you are fixing next. Thanks for being here!! Episode 187 of the Guitar Music Theory podcast features the return of Nashville music producer Jason Wyatt Kuhn from We The People Music. Jason first appeared on Episode 173, "From Demo to Radio – Inside Music Production," where we discussed songwriting, studio production, and the process of turning musical ideas into professional recordings. Since then, one of my students, Charles Vincent, has worked with Jason and his team to record several original songs, and I was invited to contribute lead guitar solos to two tracks: "Pretty Little Thing" and "The Way She Moves." In this episode, Jason and I discuss the recording and production process behind these songs, from rough demos and arrangement ideas to polished final mixes. We also listen to sections of the tracks and break down my guitar solo approach from both a theoretical and artistic perspective, including melodic phrasing, chord tone targeting, emotional pacing, and building solos that support the overall song. If you've ever wondered how original songs come together in the studio, how professional music production works, or how to craft memorable guitar solos that truly serve the music, this episode gives you an inside look at the creative process. Jason Wyatt Kuhn and his team are also available for hire, whether you're a hobbyist looking to professionally record your music or an artist pursuing a serious music career. They shout out listener Jason Hughes from Dayton, Ohio (Simple Daze), then pivot to Rolling Stone's new “100 Greatest Guitar Solos” list, calling it infuriating rage bait and introducing a “Greatest List Bingo Card” to flag predictable contrarian picks. They debate snubs and weird placements (e.g., “Sultans of Swing,” “Cliffs of Dover,” “Free Bird”), critique questionable inclusions, compare overlap with Guitar World's 2022 reader poll, and run through Rolling Stone's top 20, reacting to live-cut pretension and the surprising #1 pick: Prince's “Purple Rain.”

In the news this morning, the latest on Rudy Guliani, another deadly cruise ship is being refused permission to dock, a massive recall on frozen pizza sold at Walmart, and a wild video of a United Airlines plane hitting a delivery truck. Somebody needed to pick up the torch for hard rock and heavy metal with real grit and gusto and without a gimmick. Enter Who on Earth. The New Jersey outfit of Coosh [vocals], Pete Rizzi [bass], Johnny James Barone (guitar), Jimmy Kocha (guitar) and Howie Fallon [drums] — deliver a one-two punch of hard-hitting hooks and airtight instrumentation bolted down by pummeling grooves and piercing riffs. It all gestated from a question…“We wanted to fill in the blank of ‘Who On Earth is going to bring back good rock and metal?',” explains Pete. “We grew up on the new wave of British heavy metal and classic rock. We went through grunge and other great genres of metal. We wanted to resurrect the melodies, hooks, and guitar solos. We returned to our roots yet upgraded everything with modern production.”The group made their bones through countless gigs across the Tristate area in every dive bar and concert hall with a stage. Along the way, Andrew and Pete tore up venues as part of MadHaus, performing marathon covers. During 2021, the longtime friends chose to forego covers, hunker down, and compose an original album.  The composing came easily, and in a short time, the founding fathers had 10 songs ready to go.  To bring the record to life, the band hit the studio with none other than Mike Orlando (Category 7, Adrenaline Mob). Over the next year, the guys endured numerous COVID delays as they recorded with Orlando behind the board as producer, engineer, and “stunt” guitarist. Nodding to everyone from Black Sabbath, Iron Maiden, Metallica to Rush, Alice In Chains, and Tool, they placed storytelling in the spotlight.“The New Jersey heavy rockers bring their signature grit and power to the 1979 classic, adding punchy riffs, thunderous drums, and raw energy while honoring the spirit of the original.“Somebody needed to pick up the torch for hard rock and heavy metal with real grit and gusto without a gimmick. Enter Who On Earth. The New Jersey quintet—Andrew Couche [vocals], Pete Rizzi [bass], Howie Fallon [drums], Johnny James Barone [guitar], and Jimmy Kocha [guitar]—deliver a one-two punch of hard-hitting hooks and airtight instrumentation bolted down by pummeling grooves and piercing riffs. The band continues to pay homage to rock's past as they usher in its future on their latest EP, Smoke & Mirrors.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/arroe-collins-unplugged-totally-uncut--994165/support.

Roger's first contribution to Queen blasts out of the gate and while it might be an intentional (or even subconscious) nod to another band, it stands on its own as a blazing statement of presence. Various versions (Queen, Queen I, Sessions Take, BBC Session 4) take us through the song's creation to an impressive performance that might take the cake as the ultimate best. This may be a lot of noise to some, but it feels deeper than that (to me).

In this episode, Desi Serna is joined by friends and fellow guitarists Matt Reviere and Jon "HW" Sullivan for a lively discussion about one of the most debated solos of the 1980s — Steve Howe's guitar solo in "Heat of the Moment" by Asia. The trio breaks down why the solo doesn't quite hit the mark, exploring its phrasing, tone, and fit within the song. Along the way, they take a deep dive into Steve Howe's legendary work with Yes, examining how such a brilliant player could deliver something that feels so out of place. Then things get creative — each guitarist reveals and plays a replacement solo they composed themselves, reimagining what the song could sound like with a stronger melodic statement. It's equal parts music theory, guitar nerdery, and good humor between three friends who love to analyze and play great guitar music.
