In this episode I share the evolution of ‘Surrender' in my life… what I thought it meant… what it REALLY means… and that I'm still a work in progress. Surrender to me is about letting go and letting God, the Divine, the Great One, the Universe handle the details. The trick is doing this while simultaneously completely showing up as an empowered, sovereign and unattached being. It's about letting the Divine handle the details, knowing I can't mess it up, being unwilling to waste my energy resisting, controlling or judging myself. It's a way of being in allowance of all, softening my preferences, opening to a grander plan I may not understand. Some days it's really hard to BE this. Other days I'm completely Home.    In this solo episode I also discussed…   -How I initially thought surrender meant I was giving up, letting go of my dreams. Or I'd sugarcoat my feelings saying ‘I surrender, everything is love and light happening' for a reason' but really I was just being a coward unwilling to take ownership, grow up and show up.   -How then I thought surrender was letting go of people pleasing, looking good, doing it right or give a shit what other people thought, surrendering my whining that everything needed to be fair, surrendered being a victim or martyr and learning to speak up, speak truth and clean up my messes.   -How surrendering being a victim inflated my ego a bit, thinking I was more powerful than the divine, that I could create anything, that I ‘got this'.    -How Life wanted me to know what surrender was REALLY and brought me to my knees… choosing to surrender everything... my businesses, money, son, cat, any chance at meeting my beloved or experiencing greater impact or success. I even surrendered my life.   -How I've tasted even beyond surrender, where you don't even need to surrender to divine will... You're already there. There is no separation. You just are. Total alignment with your hips and your heart and your divine mind. You just keep putting one foot in front of the other without thinking. And your dreams literally arise of their own accord…    --------------------------------- p.s. It takes an extremely special person to go from being the poster girl of health/wellness and how to live our best lives to talking about grief.   And not just grief we feel when a loved one dies, but grief on all levels and of all kinds.   Could the denial of death, and thus the lack of education and information about grief, be the cause of so much depression, anxiety, and even disease in our world today?   Many of you may not know, but Kris Carr has been a guiding light, mentor, and supportive presence in my journey of creating Doulagivers Institute.    She is ethical, she is wicked smart, and she keeps everything real with an extra-large side of FUN!!!   When she told me she was writing a book about grief, I was so grateful. I know this could not have been an easy choice. I ALSO knew how many people this would invite into this conversation and help.   In this episode of the Ask a Death Doula Podcast, I will be talking to Kris about her new book, “I'm Not A Mourning Person.”    In it, she shares what to expect when you're not expecting your world to fall apart. In true Kris Carr fashion, it's raw and inspiring but also has joy, humor, and hope too! This book gives readers tips and strategies to move forward and start living again after experiencing loss.    In this episode, we will discuss:   How LIFE promises you it all - the positive and the challenging parts of the journey and HOW you navigate through the tough times that makes ALL the difference in that experience.   How death awareness can be our greatest teacher about how to live fully.   Beautiful, priceless, and sage life lessons from her late father.   We will all be touched by grief - all kinds of it - and that does not need to be a terrible thing. It is a great reminder of our humanity and how we are so much more alike than we are different.    Death, Grief, and Love are the great equalizers of the world.   Let's share what we can to support each other through the hard times in the healthiest way possible.   Xoxoxo, Suzanne   Get the Book "I'm Not a Mourning Person" Click here Learn more about Kris Carr  Click here   More about Doulagivers Institute Click here

Episode 368: 6 Ways to Ensure Integrity in Your Business Records, Part IV  Episode NotesA sixth way to ensure integrity in your business records is to create a culture of belonging. A culture of belonging promotes integrity. When people feel they belong, they show you who they are, warts and all. No pretenses, no games. No acting out. We are more inclined to do what is best for ourselves and others with a motivation toward the greater good.  Belonging is essential to humans, so why are we so bad at creating a culture of belonging at work? We even have difficulty creating belonging in our own families. Fifty-two percent of Americans feel lonely. “Isolation is being by yourself. Loneliness is not liking it.” – Unknown Author. The simple answer to why we are so bad at creating a culture of belonging is that we live what we know and what is taught and role modeled. We haven't been taught how to belong, even though it is a universal human need. In business, creating a culture of belonging was an outlandish idea until the Covid-19 pandemic hit and the epidemic of loneliness began.Journalist and critic Robin Kaiser-Schatzlein is coming out with a book called Tyranny At Work. It is about “the authoritarian design of the American workplace and the tools and laws–from “at-will employment, to coercive contracts, surveillance, employer-driven debt, and mandatory arbitration–that make us uniquely unfree on the job. She reveals how much of our lives are spent outside of democracy and what a different arrangement might look like.” Last year, she wrote an article about How Life as a Trucker Devolved Into a Dystopian Nightmare. We know how to divide and conquer. We know how to isolate and alienate one another. We know how to support specific people and cultures. We know how to be fiercely independent. We know how to compete. We don't know how to create a business culture and home life that supports interdependence, unconditional love, and belonging.Research Professor Brené Brown defines belonging as “the innate human desire to be part of something larger than us. Because this yearning is so primal, we often try to acquire it by fitting in and seeking approval, which is hollow substitutes for belonging and often barriers to it. Because true belonging only happens when we present our authentic, imperfect selves to the world, our sense of belonging can never be greater than our level of self-acceptance.”Accepting ourselves gives those we lead permission to accept themselves. The avenue to accepting ourselves is taking 100% responsibility for our lives so we can feel engaged, hopeful, grateful, excited, confident, inspired, joyful, exhilarated, refreshed, and peaceful. Those are the feelings we experience when we regularly meet our universal human needs.Belonging is part of our universal human need to connect. We must feel acceptance, appreciation, closeness, communication, consideration, safety, security, and community to connect and feel we belong. We must see and be seen, which takes compassion. If you create a culture of belonging where people feel they truly belong, you feel connected to those you work with, even if you have differences. We develop a better understanding of another, which expands our ability to have empathy and exercise compassion. When we work without compassion, we succumb to the era of narcissism, entitlement, and incivility. Ramani Durvasula, Ph.D., coined the phrase. You will frequently hear me talk about Ramani Durvasula, Ph.D. because her videos and books help me to help others move out of this era. One of the ways to get out of this era of narcissism is by creating a culture of belonging. I highly recommend reading “Don't You Know Who I Am?” How to stay sane in an era of narcissism, entitlement, and incivility. A must-read to support the creation of a culture of belonging. In 2011, Dr. Self Charlie Self asked the question, “What does a healthy Christian look like 24/7? Can we measure that?” Dr. Self and colleagues Johan Mostert, and Jame Bolds set out to figure out ways to articulate wholeness in Christ to help Christians grow in both their strengths and weaknesses.  In 2013, they published an assessment tool to allow individuals to answer questions and receive a personal report. They've spent the last decade refining the work. Together, they wrote the book, “Life in 5D: A New Vision of Discipleship,” to describe their new vision for discipleship. In this episode of Follower of One, Dr. Charlie Self talks about the dynamic nature of discipleship. He shares how the book and assessment can be used as a tool to increase biblical outcomes in individuals and organizations.  You will want to hear this episode if you are interested in... In this episode, Jeff and Arwen discuss: Building a financial advising firm from the ground up.Navigating owning a business through the dot com bust and the great recession.Marketing directly to women and other minority groups. How LIFE with Arwen can help you as a financial advisor.  Key Takeaways: Even if things don't seem to work out, they may lead you to a bigger thing than you would have ever considered possible.Be you. Be authentic. Be honest with who you are and who you want to be.Regardless of who you are trying to appeal to, you must speak their language to properly connect with them.Having the right tools can help you to succeed on things that seem logical and easy but are not as straightforward as they appear.  "It takes more than designing a pink invitation and sticking some flowers on it to get women to trust you with their financial concerns." —  Arwen Becker About Arwen Becker: As the second shortest player on a division 1 volleyball team, Arwen Becker learned that hard work and perseverance are more valuable than natural talent. She also learned that preparation could get you through just about anything—including her 1999 cougar attack.  Just a few months after that attack, Arwen found herself as a 24-year-old divorced Zoology grad seeking a higher-paying job. That landed her into a newly launched retirement planning firm and a new career in financial planning. For 22 years, she was the co-owner of Becker Retirement Group with her husband Randy, until a national firm acquired it.After meeting with thousands of women over the years, Arwen has taken a direct focus on changing the way women are financially educated by creating her training organization, LIFE with Arwen. LIFE is an acronym – Leaders Inspiring Female/Financial Empowerment that arms advisors with the proper tools to succeed in their practice, and to bring awareness to this national issue of female financial empowerment. Arwen leads and educates advisors to better understand how women learn differently, how to connect using story, and best practices to thrive in marketing to women.Arwen speaks nationally, more than 40 times a year, is the author of She Handled It, So Can You!, creator of the YouVersion Women & Money devotional, is the host of the She Handled It! podcast, and is often featured as a guest expert on TD Ameritrade Network, Yahoo Finance, and many others. Ep 16. How Life's Toughest Struggles Can Become The Best Success Stories with Dean Roff of Homeless Hookup CLE This week's podcast isn't my regular Fishing Podcast but it did stem from fish. Specifically Walleye. A few weeks ago I had the idea of a community fish fry and the first guy I thought of was Dean Roff of Homeless Hookup CLE may be the guy to help turn the idea into a reality. So I sent him a message and we scheduled a time to talk about it. Probably 10 minutes prior to our call a voice from inside whispered hat this needed to be a Podcast. So I grabbed my prepared outline for our call, added some questions, and organized it into the podcast format. When Dean came on the call I shared the opportunity to do a podcast to talk about a community Walleye Fry and to help raise awareness for his cause. Dean was ecstatic and quickly agreed. The rest is history… Enjoy the show

How Life is like a video game Join me and Special Guest Ross Mckendrick as we discuss the relationship of devices in the home. I grew up without access to devices I subconsciously expected my kids to live a similar childhood, however, times are different. We are locked down at home surrounded by iPads, computers, laptops, phones, PS4, and initially, I aimed to keep them out of our house and my kids off them completely. That hasn't worked as we progressively have to work together as a family to keep on top of it. Ross willingly shares all his "excuses" on how to get on the devices (which is helpful to me) hahahah as sometimes as a parent running the business from home it's easy to default to yes when you mean NO. Hopefully, this gives parents some insights into how to best work together to navigate these unprecedented times. One of the most requested guests by Slo Mo's listeners has been British-Swiss philosopher, Alain de Botton, and I'm honored to have him on this episode and the next to talk about one of my favorite topics: Love. This is Part 1 of a two-part episode, and it may just be the paradigm shift you're looking for if you're facing challenges in the realm of love, be it giving love or receiving it (and let's be honest: who isn't?)Alain de Botton is a philosoper and writer of essayistic books that have been described as a ‘philosophy of everyday life." He’s written on love, travel, architecture and literature. His books have been bestsellers in 30 countries and have sold millions of copies. Alain also started and helps to run a school in London called The School of Life, dedicated to a new vision of education. His latest book, published in September 2019, is a collection of essays written for The School of Life, titled The School of Life: An Emotional Education.I love talking about love, just as much as I'm happy to discuss happiness. Alain's body and scope of work is so vast, I decided to focus this conversation entirely on love, sex, and relationships. I'm so glad I did.Listen as we discuss:What is love? Alain's definition of love: 'when two people meet in their raw condition.'How the opposite extreme of love is Loneliness, not Hatred. How Life is a desperate emergency, and if we can just admit that, things open up.Why Christianity gives a privileged role to those who sufferOne of the most honest takes on sex you'll ever hearHow we're always trying to get our life as close as possible to our true realityIf we're all imperfect, doesn't that make imperfection perfect? How we've replaced happiness with "fun" just as we've replaced love with "romance"The contradictions in love and how they're only glaring because they violate a script or story we expect from our relationshipHow we shouldn't be held accountable for what we feel, but rather the actions we take based on those feelings.Reinterpreting the typical disaster scenario in a relationship when one partner cheats on anotherInstagram: @solve.for.happy, @onebillionhappy, @mo_gawdatFacebook: Slo Mo, onebillionhappyLinkedIn: /in/mogawdatConnect with Alain de Botton on Twitter @alaindebotton and alaindebotton.comDon't forget to subscribe to Slo Mo for new episodes every Monday and Thursday. Topic: Frank Pasciuti, Ph.D., is a licensed clinical psychologist and certified hypnotherapist in private practice in Charlottesville, Virginia. He is founder and president of Associated Clinicians of Virginia, which provides psychotherapy and organizational development services to individuals and businesses. Dr. Pasciuti is chairman of the Institutional Review Board (IRB) at The Monroe Institute, in Faber, Virginia, and he collaborates on research related to NDEs, psychic phenomena, and the survival of consciousness at the Division of Perceptual Studies (DOPS), a research unit of the department of Psychiatry and Neurobehavioral Sciences at the University Of Virginia School Of Medicine. He is author of Chrysalis Crisis, How Life's Ordeals Can Lead to Personal and Spiritual Transformation. (Rainbow Ridge books, July 2019) In his seminal book Chrysalis Crisis: How Life's Ordeals Can Lead to Personal & Spiritual Transformation he explains how you can use your life ordeal to bring about personal and spiritual growth. Like the butterfly that struggles to free its wings from the chrysalis cocoon, it can be a struggle to let go of the lingering effects of a crisis. But just as the butterfly's struggle to release its wings also strengthens them for flight, the struggle for growth after a crisis can contribute to personal transformation, and strengthen your flight through life. Such outcomes are possible when ten key areas of human growth are developed. These ten key areas cover a broad range of human functioning. They include your physical, intellectual, emotional, social, and moral development; your identity, intimacy, and existential growth; and your intuitive and spiritual evolution. Chrysalis Crisis examines each of the ten keys areas through the use of case examples drawn from clients in Pasciuti' s clinical practice, ordeals from people close to him, and his own crisis.

Hello Hello - Music Lovers!I hope this latest writing finds you well and your belly full of turkey leftovers. In the great words of Dave Matthews and others before him... Eat, Drink and be Merry! This time I am getting back to you with Erin Fox . In our latest episode we discuss her solo work and her band  Resilient. Erin is a singer and songwriter; and she has been performing in the local music community for almost two decades.Philly’s own Resilient serves to bring diverse and more electrifying music to the public. It’s a femme-driven band headed by songwriter Erin Fox, supported by her sister, Katie Fox, who is a drummer in the band. This band melds together 90’s influenced grunge rock with modern pop undertones to form a sui generis sound all on their own. Erin brings in what she refers to as a ‘song fetus’ composed on simple riffs and incomplete lyrics. The light, folky pop of her current ‘EP Your Joy’, and her first solo album, ‘Forbidden Youth’, both self-released albums are a source of amazement. Highlights:- What it's like to grow up in a music family in Philly - How Life inspires art with her song "Tim for Doctor" with Health Care - Her love of Prince and cover of "Nothing Compares to U" - The importance of both being in a band and going solo - The importance of meditation and how her day begins and ends - So Much more! Erin developed an interest in music very early on in life. Growing up in a music family in Philly was a blessing for her. She was inspired by her mother and wanted to be just like her. Her sister was the reason she started playing music in the first place.  She loved Prince and his song ‘Nothing Compares to U’. She is a huge fan of Prince and we share that in common. It was his energy that she was most fond of. After working in her band Sugar High, she started working on her solo songs with her first release in July 2018. She said that when you work solo, everything has to come from you. While working in a band you get ideas from people working with you.Erin loves to meditate and she starts her day doing some physical activities and meditation. Her song ‘Time for Doctor’ is a perfect blend of how life inspires art. She had an experience with cancer which inspired this song. ‘Time for Doctor’ comes from a place of frustration with our current state of health care in the U.S.  She suggested that we can always do better and learn from the experiences of others. Her song ‘Tomorrow’s Yesterday’ is also from her personal experiences, mainly those with her family and friends. This is not always the case because their ministry was built on their context. Before implementing other church's tactics make sure you understand why it works and why it could work for you. Allow people to belong before they believe. Create an environment where visitors are welcome to attend and become part of your church before you expect anything from them. Remove any barriers between them and their next step into your community. This could be anything from making sure the kids' check in procedures are clear on their first visit, or joining a life group is simple further along the way. Lead with the heart of it. When convincing leadership to begin using new resources start with how the resource can help push the heart of their vision forward.   Find the full transcript for this session of the Pro Church Podcast at http://prochurchtools.com/pcp197/.
