Dave Strohmaier, Director of Film Restorations for Cinerama,  and his collaborator Tom March provide a detailed background on the epic restoration of the 1962 Cinerama classic.  And the Warner Archives' George Feltenstein details the history behind the release and the two-disk special edition blu-ray filled with extras. We start with a review of how Dave's interest in restoring the Cinerama films led to his first meetings with Warner Home Video, including George Feltenstein, to discuss “How the West Was Won.”  This film was found to be in relatively good shape leading to a fairly easy restoration.  The re-release of the restored film was hugely successful in both its Cinerama screenings in 2008 and in the Home Video editions.   However, previous reviews of “The Wonderful World of the Brothers Grimm” film assets stated that they were so badly damaged that it was basically an “un-restorable” film.  But advances in digital film restoration, combined with Dave's work on the technically challenging WINDJAMMER restoration, gave him the confidence to explore the film once again.  Starting with meetings in 2018, Dave and George recount the milestones in the collaboration between Cinerama and Warner Bros.  And then Dave and Tom explain some of the specific restoration challenges they faced in their epic year-and-a-half spent on the project. To view exclusive images:  www.theextras.tv/podcastsTo Purchase on Amazon: https://tinyurl.com/yc7vtvxa

Book: Green Thoughts By John Collier Film: Little Shop Of Horrors (1960) Little Shop of Horrors  (1986)   This short story written by John Collier was the basis of the Roger Corman cult classic Little Shop of Horrors which would later become a Broadway musical and a hit film of the same name.  John Collier is an award winning writer who has written short stories, novels and some of the great screenplays of our time to include The African Queen and  I Am A Camera.  Many of his short stories would be used for episodes of the Twilight Zone, Outer Limits and Alfred Hitchcock Presents and turned into hit Hollywood film.      1960 Original film was directed by Roger Corman who was dared to shoot a film over two days.  Quickly putting a script together with an idea based on John Collier's short story which he read and loved and adding elements from his other two favourite authors Arthur C Clark and HG Wells.  Corman took inspiration from the orchid bulb which grows quite large but when splits and buds has a tongue like pistil which would enable the plant to speak.  Later they gave it a Venus fly trap look but leaves of the orchid and inner colourings of the orchid.   Directed by Frank Oz and based on the hit off Broadway musical of the same name.  Little Shop of Horrors was filmed on the Albert R. Broccoli 007 Stage at the Pinewood Studios in England, where a "downtown" set, complete with overhead train track, was constructed. Produced on a budget of $25 million, in contrast to the original 1960 film, which, according to Corman, only cost $30,000, it was well received by critics and audiences alike, eventually developing a cult following. The film's original 23-minute finale, based on the musical's ending, was rewritten and reshot after test audiences did not react positively to it.] For years only available as black-and-white workprint footage, the original ending was fully restored in 2012 by Warner Home Video. Front Row Classics kicks off 2022 with a visit from one of the most renowned and trusted voices in the film community. Brandon is thrilled to welcome Leonard Maltin to the podcast. Mr. Maltin discusses his new book, "Starstruck: My Unlikely Road to Hollywood". The interview covers his many interactions with both legendary and lesser known entertainment figures. We also discuss his early days as a critic & interviewer along with his tenure teaching USC's popular film studies course. This is definitely a conversation that any film lover will enjoy. "Starstruck: My Unlikely Road to Hollywood" is available wherever books are sold from GoodKnight Books. Leonard Maltin is one of the most recognized and respected film critics of our time. He spent 30 years on the hit television show Entertainment Tonight and appears regularly on Turner Classic Movies. An established author, he is best known for his annual paperback reference, Leonard Maltin's Movie Guide. In 2005, he introduced a companion volume, Leonard Maltin's Classic Movie Guide (now in its third edition), which focuses on movies made before 1965, going back to the silent era. Leonard's other books include Hooked on Hollywood, The Best 151 Movies You've Never Seen, The Disney Films, Of Mice and Magic: A History of American Animated Cartoons, The Great American Broadcast: A Celebration of Radio's Golden Age, The Great Movie Comedians, Movie Comedy Teams, The Art of the Cinematographer, Selected Short Subjects and (as co-author) The Little Rascals: The Life and Times of Our Gang. Leonard has been teaching at the USC School of Cinematic Arts for the last 23 years. His popular class screens new films prior to their release, followed by a Q&A with the filmmakers. This direct access to top talent has proven to be invaluable in his students' own filmmaking endeavors. As an expert and host, he is frequently seen on news programs and documentaries. Leonard is also a prolific freelance writer whose articles have appeared in The New York Times, The Los Angeles Times, The London Times, Smithsonian, TV Guide, Esquire, The Village Voice and American Film. He was the film critic for Playboy magazine for six years. Additionally, Leonard frequently lectures on film and was a member of the faculty of New York City's New School for Social Research for nine years. He served as Guest Curator at the Museum of Modern Art film department in New York on two separate occasions. Leonard created, hosted and co-produced the popular Walt Disney Treasures DVD series and appeared on Warner Home Video's Night at the Movies features. He has written a number of television specials, including Fantasia: The Creation of a Disney Classic and has hosted, produced and written such video documentaries and compilations as The Making of The Quiet Man, The Making of High Noon, Cartoons for Big Kids, The Lost Stooges, Young Duke: The Making of a Movie Star, Cliffhangers: Adventures from the Thrill Factory and Cartoon Madness: The Fantastic Max Fleischer Cartoons. In 2006 he was named by the Librarian of Congress to join the Board of Directors of the National Film Preservation Foundation. He also has received awards and citations from the Los Angeles Film Critics Association, American Society of Cinematographers, Anthology Film Archives, The Society of Cinephiles, San Diego Comic-Con International, and the Telluride Film Festival. In 1997 he was made a voting member of the National Film Registry, which selects 25 landmark American films every year. Perhaps the greatest indication of his fame was his appearance in a now-classic episode of the animated series South Park. He holds court at leonardmaltin.com. This is part 2 of "The Origins of Warner Archive" with film historian and Warner Bros executive George Feltenstein.   If you haven't yet listened to part one,  I highly recommend that you first listen to episode 15, "The Origins of Warner Archive."  We pick up from the end of that first year and the challenges that lay ahead once the initial batch of good film masters was released.  The work of preservation and remastering for DVD was an expensive and laborious task, but ultimately rewarding for the fans. Concurrently, Warner Archive's pioneering efforts in communicating directly with the fans via social media created a dialogue that informed the preservation and explained to fans the reasoning behind the releases.  On the technology side, the release of the dual-layer DVD-9 allowed for the Warner Archive's expansion into saturday matinees, television series, and catalog animation, increasing the profits for the fledgling unit.  Eventually, the Warner Archive slowly moved into Blu-ray, fulfilling the original vision for high-definition releases.  Through it all, the Warner Archive has been run by a small, dedicated team within the larger Warner Home Video division that consistently focused on quality releases that were then embraced by the fans and brought profit to the studio.  And finally, George takes a brief look ahead to 2022 and some of the exciting new releases the Warner Archive hopes to bring to the fans.

Pickle Juice® Sport has highly researched and study-backed benefits—and it’s just the kind of no-spin, real deal, game-changing product that Filip loves to bring to market.  Before joining Pickle Juice® Sport, Filip was the Director of Sales for 20th Century Fox and a Key Account Manager for Warner Home Video. Outside of the office, he’s the Director of Rugby at the Dallas Rugby Football Club and 7s Competition Commissioner at the Red River Rugby Conference. Common challenges emerging CPG entrepreneurs face when going into retail How Pickle Juice® Sport handles direct to consumer sales—and why they don't solicit or hire athletes to be their spokespeople The new products Pickle Juice® Sport plans to create in the future Filip talks about a big challenge he faced in his work and his advice to fellow entrepreneurs on bringing a product to market In this episode… After starting a new business, most entrepreneurs come to realize that having a great idea or concept isn’t quite enough to be successful. Soon enough, we all come to the same realization: you have to have a good plan and find the right tools and resources to achieve your goals. Most new businesses fail because they run out of cash after getting too focused on their products and losing sight of the business behind the idea. If you aren’t fluent in business, Filip Keuppens recommends finding the right people to help you bring your products to market. He also believes in asking for support when you need it—because there are many successful entrepreneurs willing to give a helping hand to startups. Filip Keuppens, the Vice President of Global Sales and Marketing at Pickle Juice® Sport, is Steve Cleere's guest in this week's episode of the NexxtLevel Podcast. Together, they talk about creating a drink to stop cramps and building a business around this particular pain point. Time for the On the Subject crew to dawn our cowls and become the night. We are talking about the animated film adaptation of the Batman Comic; Under The Redhood. Does the film strike true like a batarang or fall flat like a bad punchline. find out in this episode of our mini series: Cinema VS "Cinema."   Batman: Under the Red Hood     ◦    Batman: Under the Red Hood is a 2010 American animated superhero adventure direct-to-video film produced by Warner Bros. Animation and released by Warner Home Video.[1] It is the eighth feature in the DC Universe Animated Original Movies series. The writer, Judd Winick, also wrote the "Under the Hood" run in the monthly Batman comic. The film received positive reviews, and is generally considered one of the best in the DC Universe Animated Original Movies line.     ◦    The story is based on the 1988 Batman Comics storyline "A Death in the Family," where readers voted via a 1-900 number to either save or kill off the second Robin, Jason Todd. Over 10,000 votes were cast and with only a 72-vote majority, the decision was made to kill him. Todd was later brought back in 2005 as part of the 2005 "Under the Hood" storyline.     ◦    Judd Winick, who wrote both the original comics story, was brought on to adapt the comic into this feature. He considered the movie the better version.      SHOW NOTES SEND YOUR QUESTIONS:  onthesubjectpodcast@gmail.com OR   Follow us on:  Twitter:  @onthesubject1 Instagram:  @onthesubject Website: http://www.geeksrising.com  LOGAN NAUGLE  Twitter:  @thatlogan Instagram: @thatlogan website: thatlogan.com ZACHARY ROSS JACKSON Twitter: @BossRossJackson  Instagram: @boss_ross_jackson MALCOLM RUSSEL-NELSON Twitter: @capnmalcolm

SUMMARY Author Flynn Coleman, attorney-at-law long interested in the intersection of human rights and technology, brings us A Human Algorithm: How Artificial Intelligence is Redefining Who We Are. She examines the immense impact intelligent technology has and will have on humanity. These machines, while challenging our personal beliefs and our socio-economic world order, also have the potential to transform our health and well-being, alleviate poverty and suffering, and reveal the mysteries of intelligence and consciousness. In essence, Coleman explores what it means to be human. Because technology is developing so quickly, we have much less time than we once did to assimilate the technologies bringing us artificial intelligence (A.I.). So, Coleman argues that it is critical we instill values, ethics, and morals into our robots and other forms of A.I. to create a human algorithm. KEY POINTS & DEFINITIONS The A.I. Effect – the point reached when we’ve integrated A.I. into our lives so much that we no longer want to call it A.I. (e.g., Google) Machine Learning – often used synonymously with A.I.; study of algorithms and models used to perform certain tasks on a computer Exceptionalism and other-ism – detrimental thinking that some lives matter less than others Encoding empathy, equality, fairness – an urgent prerequisite to A.I. design. For example, coders need to think of how their tools are affecting humans. Future data privacy – transparency and accountability will be key in developing new paradigms Nonhumans deserving rights and needing responsibility – rivers, ecosystems, self-driving cars, corporations, etc. QUOTES FROM COLEMAN “We need to be more inclusive in bringing more diverse voices and ideas and working across silos and having 'courageous conversations’ about not just how to build the technology but building it for good.” “Technology is advancing inexorably, and our best course of action is to embrace it and to insist that it be designed with integrity. I don’t know if we will ever move past fear, but we can understand that we all have a stake and can build a brighter future.” “Optimism and hope are a rebellion in these times…No one of us has all the answers, but, together, there’s no star we can’t dream of exploring.” “Technology is a mirror of its designers.” “We should bestow dignity, rights, and esteem on nonhuman beings. Becoming more inclusive involves widening our lens to say, ‘We’re not the only ones that matter.’ But that doesn’t make us matter any less.” “When we don’t pay to use a platform online, we are the product! Our data is being collected and used and bought and sold. As the saying goes, ‘Data is the new oil.’” “It’s imperative we develop tools with the future of our children and planet in mind.” BUY A Human Algorithm: How Artificial Intelligence Is Redefining Who We Are RECOMMENDATION BUY 2001: A Space Odyssey [Blu-ray] by Warner Home Video  Connect with us on social media! Macintosh & Maud Haven't Seen What?!

There’s no good explanation why Macintosh hasn’t seen Jean-Claude Van Damme’s action-star debut. He’s seen his fair share of martial-arts epics, fighting movies and dumb action roles. But other than Street Fighter, there’s a major lack of JCVD in his repertoire. Meanwhile, Maud has watched this at least a dozen times, and now it’s time for her to share this terribly-acted but nevertheless immensely watchable fighting movie. With no budget, 1988 looks and a super-unreliable narrator in the real Frank Dux, this movie is a hot mess in the absolute best way. And if that won’t convince you, just drink every time JCVD does the splits or yells. That’ll REALLY help you enjoy the movie… Macintosh & Maud have started a Patreon! Any little bit you can contribute helps, and we have special contributor-only content if you donate at the $2 level, including our newest episode reviewing Love, Simon! You can email us with feedback at macintoshandmaud@gmail.com, or you can connect with us on Instagram, Twitter and Facebook. Continuing in our examination of Advent through the lenses of Acts and Christmas movies we love, this sermon heads down Mt. Crumpet and into Whoville. We will see how joy is a transformational response to grace, and how we are called to spread that joy to others (often through sacrificial giving). We will journey through Acts, the nativity scene, and the genius of Dr. Seuss & Chuck Jones to find joy as a light in our darkness. Today we’re talking with Griffin Gmelich, Senior Vice President of Sales and Business Development at Gravitas Ventures, one of North America’s largest distributors of independent films. Griffin joined Gravitas following three years at Hulu where he led film content acquisitions. Prior to Hulu, Griffin was the Head of Domestic Sales for Entertainment One, Vice President of Sales for Universal-Vivendi and held several positions at Warner Home Video in sales and communications. In this episode, you’ll learn from a distribution veteran what to look for in a distributor and, perhaps even more importantly, what distributors are looking for in your film when they decide whether or not to acquire it. You’ll learn about the importance of artwork to a film’s marketability. And you’ll get a behind-the-scenes look at Gravitas Ventures and Hulu and a glimpse at what the future of distribution might look like. We hope you find our talk Griffin Gmelich informative and helpful as you plan your next movie, web series, or documentary. Remember, you can keep track of all Korchula’s latest projects, including the feature film I directed called Little Pink House, by following us on Twitter and Facebook and at freemindsfilm.com, where you’ll also find our free Distribution Guide, where we share in-depth advice from experts across the industry about how to distribute a film. We want you to start thinking about distribution from the very beginning, so it’s a resource that I recommend you check out before you start your next film or video project. We’ve also got a feature documentary out right now called Can We Take a Joke?, which you can stream on iTunes, Amazon, Google Play, Vudu, and most other major streaming platforms.

We change things up by focusing on a boutique label, Twilight Time, that has found success through a unique business model. Mark and Aaron happen to be big fans, and feel that we have directly contributed towards some of their profits. We talk about the company, their business model, why they have succeeded, and we address some common critiques. We also review a few discs each, and finally count down our favorite Twilight Time titles. About Nick Redman: London-born Nick Redman, one of Hollywood's leading producers of movie music, is also an award-winning documentary filmmaker. An Academy Award nominee as producer of the 1996 Warner Brothers documentary, The Wild Bunch: An Album in Montage, he went on to write, produce, and direct A Turning of the Earth: John Ford, John Wayne and The Searchers (1998), which became a prize-winner at multiple film festivals. As a consultant to the Fox Music Group (ongoing since 1993), he has developed and overseen Hollywood's most comprehensive film music restoration program, personally producing more than 500 albums featuring the music of Alfred Newman, Bernard Herrmann, Jerry Goldsmith, John Williams, Rodgers and Hammerstein, Alex North, Hans Zimmer, James Horner, Michael Kamen and many more. His productions of the “Star Wars Trilogy” were certified Gold by the RIAA. In 2007, he produced and directed Becoming John Ford, a feature-length documentary for Twentieth Century Fox, which premiered as a special selection at the Venice International Film Festival. The film details the creative and fractious relationship between the brittle, contentious director and his mentor / boss, studio chief Darryl F. Zanuck. In his capacity as a film historian, he has presided over commentaries for dozens of DVDs. As producer and director, he has provided special materials—documentaries and commentaries—for numerous titles including Sam Peckinpah's Legendary Westerns Collection, honored by Entertainment Weekly as the Number One DVD boxed set of 2006. In 2011, he co-founded the independent label Twilight Time which releases classic films licensed from 20th Century Fox, Columbia/Sony, and MGM/UA on DVD and Blu-ray. Nick has been a member of BAFTA Los Angeles for many years and has conducted numerous interviews for screening Q&A's and the Heritage Archive, including Michael Apted, Malcolm McDowell, Sir Ben Kingsley, Ian McShane, Tilda Swinton, Kevin Brownlow and Millicent Martin. About Brian Jamieson: Jamieson first entered the film industry with the New Zealand branch of Warner Bros. in 1977. He was later transferred to the United Kingdom. After his success publicizing Steven Spielberg's Close Encounters of the Third Kind and Peter Yates' The Deep, he was named the International Publicist of the Year. He moved to the United States in 1984. During the 1980s, he was in charge of all the company's theatrical marketing in Latin America, the Far East, South Africa, Europe, Australia and New Zealand; he was later promoted to head of International Marketing and Publicity, which made him responsible for home video marketing internationally. He also collaborated with Stanley Kubrick to promote Full Metal Jacket; they continued to work together until Eyes Wide Shut, Kubrick's last film before his death in 1999. The Times Colonist called Jamieson a “respected film preservationist”. In his work at Warner Home Video, Jamieson shepherded the restorations of numerous classical films. In 2002, Jamieson helped produce Charlie: The Life and Art of Charles Chaplin, with Richard Schickel, which was shown at the 2003 Cannes Film Festival. Two years later, he collaborated with Schickel to reconstruct The Big Red One, by Sam Fuller. The two readded 47 minutes of previously cut material. The reconstruction won several awards, including the Seattle Film Critics Awards and the Los Angeles Film Critics Association Awards. He later released a reconstruction of Sam Peckinpah's 1969 film The Wild Bunch.

Adam Cornelius and Chris Higgins are making the film Coined, about the rise of cryptocurrency. They previously worked together on Ecstasy of Order: The Tetris Masters. Adam is a documentary filmmaker; Chris, a journalist. They've just launched a Kickstarter to fund Coined, and have shot quite a bit of footage already. We talk about what they learned on the last film and how they plan to make the next one. Sponsors & patrons This podcast is made possible through the support of sponsors and patrons. Show notes Dogecoin is a cryptocurrency that "forked" from Bitcoin, and uses the same open-source underlying code. It was meant as a bit of a joke, and now represents a somewhat illiquid equivalent of tens of millions of US dollars. The Dogecoin community, highly active on Reddit, threw a party in New York in February that Adam and Chris attended to film. Billy Marcus forked Dogecoin. We talked about a bunch of documentaries: Word Wars, about Scrabble Wordplay about crossword puzzles The King of Kong: A Fistful of Quarters about competition for top scores among videogamers Indie Game: The Movie Spellbound about spelling bees Citizen Koch on the Koch brothers influence on American politics Rivers and Tides, a film about artist Andy Goldsworthy The inimitable Jason Scott documents (in NSFW language) the extent to which King of Kong was problematic in its narrative and treatment of its subjects. A Harper's article about the controversy is locked in its archives. Twin Galaxies, the definitive video game achievement site, is currently up! Adam Cornelius not only made a movie about competitive Tetris, he co-created the Classic Tetris World Championship, which returns for its fifth iteration in Portland this October. Chris wrote an article for The Magazine, "Playing to Lose," about the event. Dogecoin has a tipbot on Reddit that makes it easy to be generous. Berkshire Hathaway is $190,347 a share at this writing (for its "A" shares; its "B" tracking shares are $127 each). Creativity, Inc, a great book by Pixar co-chief Ed Catmull about dealing with failure, documents how the animation studio nearly lost all of Toy Story 2 because of a failure to have good backups. VHX works with filmmakers to distribute their work digitally. Next week's episode (81) of The New Disruptors is an interview with co-founder and CEO Jamie Wilkinson. A monopsony is a market in which there is a single buyer for goods or services that can dictate terms to sellers. This is like Amazon being the dominant seller of DVDs and Blu-Rays on line holding Warner Home Video over a barrel (as it is now) to negotiate prices. Humble Bundle creates packages of digital media (games, books, movies, and more) and lets buyers set their price, a portion of which goes to charity. If one pays above the average price, one gets additional parts of the bundle. Lisanne Pajot, the co-creator of Indie Game, recently was hired by VHX as its filmmaker ambassador. In this episode Wayne interviews Jimmy O and April Burril. They both have a bloody horror history and tell tales of their handywork on web TV, movies, and their own special productions.  Jimmyo was an artist/designer in special promotions for Warner Home Video from 1986-1990. And did amazing artwork for Batman, Joe Vs The Volcano, Gremlins 2, and Bugs Bunny's 50th Birthday and played drums since he was 2 years old. April started acting on a regular basis in 1997 when she joined the theater troupe, Jamo Alternative Theater. For several years, she worked with them on- and back-stage helping to bring to life their quirky original productions, the most popular of which was the horror-comedy-musical, Silver Scream. The character of Chainsaw Sally was originally created as a web hostess to garner popularity for the live show, but she quickly gained her own fan-base. When she left the stage to move on to film projects in the guise of Planet X Entertainment (now known as Forbidden Pictures), Chainsaw Sally was the natural choice for our first full film project. A few projects later her husband Jimmyo Burril came up with The Chainsaw Sally Show slash-com series.
