B&H recently celebrated its 50th Anniversary, hosting a spectacular two-day celebration for the creator community, Bild Expo 2023, at New York's Jacob Javits Center. The podcast's past three episodes have featured in-depth interviews with a few of the esteemed speakers gracing Bild's four presenter stages. If you haven't already done so, please give them a listen, and then—hold on to your hats—in this episode we're trying something different! To prepare for some fun during the show, we assembled a mobile studio and cooked up a three-question Bild Creator Quiz to spring on imagemakers who crossed our path. Once at Javits, we went on the prowl for subjects willing to be ambushed. Our resulting interviews feature a select group of attendees, expo vendors, Bild speakers, and B&H staff members. Ever since the show wrapped, we've been hard at work, combining the short clips we captured live with a narrated story line to take listeners on a virtual stroll through most aspects of the show. We hope you enjoy this taste of the intense, intoxicating, creative camaraderie that permeated the Bild experience. Happy Anniversary B&H—here's to another 50 years of creativity and growth! Ann and Ben were thrilled to visit Overpass in person for the recording of this episode. It's so great to see what guests are talking about and to be able to take photographs of the space, artists, and prints. Julia creates her own work primarily in black-and-white linoleum cuts, but is, in fact, a natural colorist—It comes easily to her. She is on a mission to economize colors for artists she works with, and she often creates palettes for them to plan their projects from. She has created such palettes for artists working in both screenprint and etching—two very different techniques requiring different approaches to layering colors. Sounds complicated, and, for me, it is. See if you agree. Julia and Overpass Projects are exhibiting at the Satellite Print Fair in New York, October 27–30, 2022. That fair is being held at Shop Studios, 528 West 39th Street, 3rd fl., which is just around the corner from the Jacob Javits Center, the site of the IFPDA Print Fair that is occurring at the same time.

Asher's engaging soloist performances have taken him to iconic venues such as Madison Square Garden, Hammerstein Hall, Lincoln Center, and the Jacob Javits Center. His diverse multicultural repertoire has garnered acclaim across four continents. Asher's high-energy shows have been featured live on PBS and have made headlines on major media outlets such as CNN, WABC, NBC, and the New York Post. In 2014, Asher lived a musician's nightmare when he confronted health challenges that impacted his mobility. Refusing to accept defeat, he rebuilt his musical prowess to a new level. This harrowing experience inspired him to reinvent himself as a dancing violinist. In only a few months, Asher learned to merge hip hop, pop, EDM, rock, and other genres with breakdancing and acrobatic choreography. His live performances now reflect his unstoppable spirit and joy! With a growing fan base, Asher is working to influence societal norms and conventional thinking about musical performance, helping to break down social and physical barriers. His latest single, Atlantis, released by Kobalt Music Group has been described as a “high-octane hit” and can be streamed via iTunes and all other major platforms. Listen to Brooklyn-New-York-native Dr. Travis J. Bristol, PhD in Education — parents from Guyana — who identifies as Black American and who lives in Oakland, California talk about living and working during the Covid-19 pandemic. In 2020 as an assistant professor at the University of California, Berkley he was able to work from home and have all of his meals with his wife – a U.C. Berkeley professor – and his two kids each day during the pandemic. He began homeschooling his 3rd grader and 7th grader when schools transitioned to remote-learning in 2020, which he said was challenging. He knew three people who transitioned: two relatives and a close family friend. They were all Black men in their late 50s and early 60s. His wife's aunt was sick with Covid-19 in the ICU for many weeks in the Jacob Javits Center emergency hospital set up by Governor Cuomo in New York City, and she pulled through. He had a close cousin in the ICU with Covid-19.He acknowledges how his class privilege created a bubble for him. He has a family member who worked for the NYC MTA which caused him to work in person, contract Covid-19, and transition after succumbing to it. He is aware of how historic and systemic racism creates limited opportunities for Black Americans to earn at-home, which effected Black people who worked in-person during the pandemic.“I think that as someone whose work is to think about the inequity in public schools, what the pandemic did was underscore how inequities continue to be reproduced, just in terms of how students did not have access to technology to reliable internet…It was also heartbreaking because so much of my professional work examines these types of inequities and to see them was quite hard…” Dr. Bristol shared.

This past August, NY NOW occurred IRL once again at Jacob Javits Center, making history as the first trade event held in the space since it was a hospital and vaccination clinic. In this episode, Amy and Sarah recap the four-day event from their perspectives, as well as their favorite discoveries. But the storied show had yet another trick up its sleeve when it announced the formation of SF NOW to take place next April 28 and 29 in San Francisco. This regional show will be co-located with *Noted — but none of this could have happened without our two very special guests today, George White and Patti Stracher-Lee.      RESOURCES   | Guest Websites:   https://upwithpaper.com/| NY NOW:  https://nynow.com     | NY NOW Podcast Page:  https://nynow.com/podcast     | NY NOW Digital Market:  https://nynowdigitalmarket.com

From New York, the greatest city in the world, it's The Update with Brandon Julien! It's the first day of a new month, and today's road stop takes us to Hudson Yards near Jacob Javits Center Hospital, where some coronavirus patients are being housed. Some stories talked about on today's show were: 1. Deaths from the coronavirus topped 1,000 in New York City as officials warned that the worst of the virus' toll is yet to come. The city's Health Department reported late Tuesday that nearly 1,100 people have died of the virus in the city. There are more than 1,500 deaths across New York state. Data released by the city shows that the virus is having a disproportionate effect in certain neighborhoods, mainly in Brooklyn and Queens. 2. Authorities say two NYPD officers have shot and wounded a man after he menaced them with a knife and what appeared to be a gun. Police say officers responded to a 911 call about a man with a knife at 4 a.m. Wednesday. They found a 55-year-old man holding a knife and what looked like a handgun. 3. A Nobel Prize-winning physicist who expanded the world's understanding of magnetism and superconductivity has died at 96. Philip Anderson's daughter says he died Sunday at the Princeton Windrows retirement community in Princeton, New Jersey. No cause was reported. The New York Times reports that Anderson researched the electronic behavior of glass, crystal and alloys. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/brandon-julien/support

Sterling Infinity combines electronic soul and synth rock Sterling began in gospel music where his songwriting abilities and extraordinary vocal range won the attention of gospel critics and the adulation of audiences. Soon he was singing not only at church venues, but also at Madison Square Garden, Radio City Music Hall, Avery Fisher, and the Jacob Javits Center. Back then he was as well known for his voice as he was for his flamboyant stage persona.   He incorporates his deep sexual convictions and naked passion into his music, with dance beats that keep clubs moving until the wee hours.  Sterling Infinity recently dropped his second music video #XWeveLanded - Soul Raptured to accompany his Ep, Sterling Infinity - The Infinite One Has Landed. The electric-pop band Karmic is comprised of vocalists Laura Baruch and Kylee Katch,  and features producers Samuel Murphy and Peter Kastner of Bad Owl Records. Known for bending sounds and toeing the genre line. their music blends electro-dance beats and hooky pop melodies, infused with a fearless point-of-view.   Their wildly energetic music, like their brand new single, "Warriors," a quintessential female forward pop track that is both inspiring and determined, and like all their music, demands positive change. Their unique sound has taken them across the U.S. and Europe, including a recent stint in Germany and frequent performances at SoFar Sounds LA and Resident DTLA.

Special thanks to 1824Ever for becoming our latest contributor and a member of the 1st Gear Club.  With that membership comes a Motorcycle Men Sticker!!  Additional content is coming.  We are having some tednical and software issues here at the MM Headquarters and are working feverishly to fix it.  Then, you will get your content....SO this show was mostly all about the International Motorcycle Show at the Jacob Javits Center in New York. Tim, Chris and I met up with some good friends and made a pain of ourselves.... well not really. We behaved mostly.  Here's what we did...... Visited Indian and sat on a black Indian. Visited Victory and sat on a Gunner and talked about their Impulse Electric bike. Visited that other American Motorcycle Company who's initials are HD and sat on some bikes there and talked to our good friend Justin Brown of Bergen Harley. Visited Suzuki and critiqued the V-Strom. Visited Honda and checked out the new Africa Twin and their new Automatic Transmission. Visited KTM and questioned the pricing on their 1290 Super Adventure. Visited Yamaha where I fell in love with the Super Tenere'. Visited a brand new company and brand new bike.... Vanguard... $30K.... Check it out. Then I visited and hung out with my very good friend Eric Buell at EBR. We wandered around and also looked at all the available accessories and manufacturers that attended the show.  Needed more time but saw quite a bit.  Lots of custom bikes and other interesting things.  Once again, I had a great time.  Pictures will be available shortly on our Photos page.We still don't know where Woody is... and we are worried. That is all for now and we'll be back with our Christmas Special and then we'll take a few weeks off.  In Support the show (https://www.paypal.com/donate/?token=zPl7v5FjoO6fCov5rwbFo35sxmoOIUqUhcR1q1UVtP34xAVolJzW0aJ6GNSdljsPAT4MC0&fromUL=true&country.x=US&locale.x=en_US)

Amid the vast halls of the Jacob Javits Center, the specialty food convention featured a broad and diverse range of beverage exhibitors at the event, including many based in metro New York. In this podcast, we examine how the Summer Fancy Food Show has evolved to become an important event for beverage brands seeking local and national retail opportunities. We also discuss a thriving scene for Brooklyn-based food and beverage companies as seen at the convention and the ways that some are marketing the borough as part of their brand. On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman discusses the increasing number of grave crises and scandals facing the International Olympic Committee (IOC), its sports federations, and the Olympic movement in general. This week many of these were highlighted in a 192-page report issued by the World Cup and Olympics Popular Committee of Rio de Janeiro, also known as the Comité Popular. This was the fourth such report issued by this group since 2012 in their series known as the Mega-Events and Human Rights Dossier. This year's report is called Rio 2016 Olympics: The Exclusion Games. The report details the many ways in which the preparations for the Rio 2016 Olympics have led to mass evictions, virtual slave labor, "social cleansing", privatization of public resources, militarization of Rio, and even the deaths of many, and principally poor Black youth. We also hear some brief comments by IOC president Thomas Bach at the conclusion of this week's IOC Executive Board meeting belittling the struggle against corruption and human rights abuses. Also discussed is the corruption in numerous Olympic federations including FIFA and IAAF among many others; the rejection by the people of a growing number of cities of hosting the Olympic Games, including Hamburg and Boston; the continuing failure of the International Olympic Committee leadership to take any effective measures against corruption and human rights abuses; why aspiring sports groups should NOT plan to join this corrupt Olympic movement but must organize themselves independently and with the athletes at the fore; and much more. On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman spoke with Michiel Thomas and Yuhei Ogawa, the executive producers of the documentary film "Game Face". This documentary chronicles the coming out of two LGBT athletes: Fallon Fox, who is the first openly transgender MMA fighter, and Terrence Clemens, who came out as openly gay during his college basketball career. We spoke with Michiel Thomas and Yuhei Ogawa Monday in New York at a showing of "Game Face" as part of DOC NYC, which is America's largest documentary film festival. "There's a lot of reasons why we wanted to make the film," said Michiel Thomas, who also directed the film. "There were personal reasons for me, because I love basketball and I'm gay myself. But also I'm originally from Belgium, and when I moved out here I got to meet several friends who I found out that they lost their scholarship when they went to school because the school found out that they were gay. At the same time there was also a wave of teenage suicides going on. So all these events made me want to do something about it. And I thought this documentary could be a perfect answer. So that was the approach from the beginning." We also discussed how they made contact with Fallon Fox through transgender basketball player Kye Allums, how the film premiered in April and has played in more than 45 film festivals with many more to come, plans to have it shown in schools and universities, future plans to get it on TV and online, the comparison of the reactions in MMA to Fallon Fox and the reactions in basketball to Terrence Clemens, and much more. On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman once again spoke with Jens Sejer Andersen, the international director of Play the Game. The 2015 Play the Game conference, which is held every two years, will take place October 25-29 at the Marselis Aarhus Hotel in Aarhus, Denmark. This year's conference will be held amidst an ever-growing list of scandals in world sport, the arrest of numerous top figures in many popular sports, and mounting popular opposition in many countries to hosting the Olympics. Thus, the theme of this year's conference is both provocative and timely: Global Sport: Reform or Revolution? We spoke with Jens Sejer Andersen by Skype Wednesday. While the International Olympic Committee and various sports bodies like FIFA claim to be reforming their ways, many people do not believe that they are capable of reforming themselves. "Our question is, if these reforms fail, what's left?" he said. "Yet we then have a revolution. "And in many ways you can say this revolution is perhaps taking place in front of our eyes. We see ordinary citizens in democratic countries going to the polls and saying no to hosting Olympic Games in their town or in their region. We see large part of the population finding new ways of physical activity all organized outside the traditional sports framework, outside the clubs, outside the federations. They go to the private gym or they go running in the forest or they make parkour in the cities." He noted, "All in all, the patterns of the way we practice sport and practice physical activity are changing, but the structures of sport remain the same. And if that goes on, it will automatically be a revolution." We discussed why these major sports organizations need to be thoroughly reformed, how world sport reached a "tipping point" when the British press wrote about the controversy over the awarding of FIFA World Cups to Russia and Qatar, how the growth of the number of scandals in world sport are "still in the landslide process," the great role of organized crime in sport, how most sports organizations have "very, very bad governance" and bad structures, issues like match-fixing and doping, what can be done to improve these situations, and much, much more. (Photo of Adrien Broner and Khabib Allakhverdiev by Stephanie Trapp/Showtime. Photo of Lucas Matthysse and Viktor Postol by Tom Hogan/Golden Boy Promotions.) On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman once again spoke with lifelong martial artist, former UFC and Battlecade Extreme Fighting matchmaker, TV commentator, and our senior correspondent, John Perretti. We spoke with him by Skype Tuesday Japan time (Monday New York time). John Perretti's fighting career mainly focused on kickboxing, where he took "a lot of damage," and also included competition in karate and taekwondo, as well as rigorous training in grappling, judo, and wrestling, he said. This resulted in "16 verifiable concussions" and a few more "accidental" ones along the way. After he had retired as an active fighter but still was training and coaching, at about the age of 40 he started having cognitive problems. He illustrated what this meant for him: "For myself, that was the real beginning of not knowing where I was, even though I was probably 50-60 feet down a driveway in the Hampton Bays, and getting lost, I mean physically lost, and having to pull the car over and not know where I was for an hour or two." As time went on, he said, having scar tissue on the brain and other brain injuries made him susceptible to other diseases. And he knows many fighters and ex-fighters with similar problems. What upsets him to no end today is seeing parents encourage and even steer their children into training and competing in sports where inflicting head trauma resulting in brain injuries is common and often legal within the sport's rules. "Parents have to take responsibility," he argued, when it comes to having their children participate in sports like rugby, American football, boxing, and MMA. We discussed how many parents are attached to a "macho" culture which ignores health and safety, why he recommends only sports which are "low impact" and have a relatively low chance of head trauma, how even non-contact sports today are becoming "really physical," and much, much more. No Holds Barred: Malcolm X and the Martial Arts and Combat Sports

On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman reposts a commentary from May 2013 about the legacy of Malcolm X and its meaning for the martial arts and combat sports. Plus, added is a new introduction which discusses Malcolm X's emphasis on continuing to learn, adapt, and change, and how this applies to the martial arts and combat sports, especially for the reviving sport of catch wrestling and for those sports which produce repetitive head trauma and brain injuries. On March 29, 1964, at a speech at the Audubon Ballroom in New York, Malcolm X repeated what he had said many times about the importance of the martial arts: "If you're interested in freedom, you need some judo, you need some karate, you need all the things that will help you fight for freedom." That building now houses the Malcolm X and Dr. Betty Shabazz Memorial and Educational Center, at 3940 Broadway, New York, NY 10032, where one of the many celebrations of the 89th anniversary of Malcolm's birth will take place this Monday, May 19. Malcolm X also explained the importance of martial arts training in "The Autobiography of Malcolm X", and how the values they teach are part of the overall training in values which "are vital in a person, a home, a community, a nation, and a civilization," and not only the aspect of training in self-defense. The book also discussed his relations with Muhammad Ali, when he won the heavyweight boxing championship of the world from Sonny Liston in 1964. But the type of positive values which Malcolm advocated are today often not being promoted, particularly in combat sports like MMA and wrestling, and this is discussed. So the lessons taught by Malcolm X about the martial arts and combat sports are still valid. It is up to us to learn this legacy, and to apply it to what we do today. No Holds Barred with Eddie Goldman

On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman spoke with Dr. Michael Hutchison of the University of Toronto Concussion Program. A research associate at the University of Toronto Faculty of Kinesiology and Physical Education, Dr. Hutchison is also the lead author of a study, published in March 2014 in the American Journal of Sports Medicine, called "Head Trauma in Mixed Martial Arts". The purpose of this study was "(1) To determine the incidence, risk factors, and characteristics of knockouts (KOs) and technical knockouts (TKOs) from repetitive strikes in professional MMA; and (2) to identify the mechanisms of head trauma and the situational factors that lead to KOs and TKOs secondary to repetitive strikes through video analysis." While no fighters were actually examined in this study, it did look at all the competition data and video records for all knockouts and TKOs from numbered Ultimate Fighting Championship events between 2006 and 2012. It found that the "combined incidence of match-ending head trauma of 15.9 per 100 AEs (31.9% of matches)." When comparing these figures to other combat and contact sports like boxing, kickboxing, and American football, it concluded, "Rates of KOs and TKOs in MMA are higher than previously reported rates in other combative and contact sports." It also noted that "we have likely underestimated the incidence of TBIs [traumatic brain injuries] in MMA as we have (1) reviewed only events immediately preceding the conclusion of a match and (2) recognized that a certain percentage of concussions have no observable signs evident on video footage." We spoke with Dr. Michael Hutchison by phone Friday. "What I see at this point for what we can do as researchers, is to at least document the frequency [of KOs and TKOs], to educate the public to allow people to make informed decisions, and with informed decisions and having this concerning frequency, is that you would potentially over time see a reduction in interest. And a reduction in interest will lead to obviously less people participating, and the trickle-down effect will likely occur, if people are informed well enough about the potential risks and associated consequences potentially with these outcomes," he said. "And so, from my perspective, I would like to inform the public, and allow them as adults, and adults should be making decisions for their kids, is that, just be educated, understand, and then make informed decisions. I think that's the most that we can do. And if more people look at this, and find similar information, then as we grow this body of information, then we will have enough information to make sound conclusions." We discussed many details of this study, what its methodology was, the strengths and limitations of this methodology, what can be known from it regarding the relative risks of head trauma in MMA and other sports, the increasing progression of strikes to the head in the 30 seconds prior to a knockout or TKO in MMA in many fights, the need for people to be active and participate in sports and exercise, the reactions to this report in both the scientific community and the media, how its findings validate the dangers of what John Perretti terms the "anvil effect" where fighters are repeatedly punched in the head while on the ground, and much, much more. We got as much as we could off the ground and tried to block but there wasn’t much we could do. The worst was trying to get to Gil. It was waist deep almost and strong enough to throw around logs. I reached him and he was submerged and freaking out. Don’t remember much more then lifting him and carrying him all the way back to the house. Looking back I can see how scary it was.” We are securing the house as much as we can and going through the damage. A scrapbook full of original art I’ve kept for 30 years is gone. A lot more. Our friends Belinda and Steve are setting up a fund to help. I feel terrible about this but once things settle I’ll have to face up that we need help. I just wish I could catch my breath for 5 minutes and I can make my own money. Austin has had other ideas I guess. We’ll keep you posted. We’re sort of trapped here for right now. Going to pack and move as much as we can before the next storm hits. Thank you guys so much."

No Holds Barred: John Perretti on His Pioneering 1997 Grappling Event, The Contenders

On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman once again speaks with lifelong martial artist, former UFC and Battlecade Extreme Fighting matchmaker, TV commentator, and our senior correspondent, John Perretti. On October 11, 1997, before the major no-gi grappling championships of today, John Perretti was the main organizer of a pioneering grappling event known simply as "The Contenders". The format was a seven-match card, held in Sioux City, Iowa, pitting a team of various martial artists against a team of elite U.S. wrestlers. Victory in each match could come by submission or, if there was none, judges' decision. There was no striking permitted, and the matches were held in a cage. The martial artists won, four matches to three, including three wins by submissions, but controversy ensued during and after the event about the rules and decisions. This ended up being a money-losing, one-shot deal, because attendance was sparse and pay-per-view buys were minuscule. Still, it is considered a pioneering event because its concept helped inspire the numerous no-gi grappling championships which followed it. Calling the event his "brainchild," John Perretti said in this interview, which was recorded by Skype Sunday, "I am to blame for all the problems with it." But he added, quoting a widely-held view about this event, "It's the greatest show no one ever saw." We thus discussed what happened at this historic event, many of whose matches can be seen on YouTube, some of the lessons for today, and much more. The No Holds Barred theme song is called "The Heist", which is also available on iTunes by composer Ian Snow. No Holds Barred is free to listen to and is sponsored by: ONE Fighting Championship.
