A new documentary, in the making, seeks to document the sacred nature of an ancient medicine. We're all familiar with vivid tales of projectile vomiting and the complete loss of bodily functions during an ayuahuasca ceremony but who, amongst us, has really explored the benefits of a ritual? This documentary seeks to educate us, through a carefully curated journey from the lands of the Taitas (shamans) in Putumayo, the process of creating the ayahuasca (also known as Yage), to the preparation of the ceremony, the ritual itself and then a reflection of the ceremony and its outcomes. The documentary maker: Sam Lipman-Stern is an Emmy Nominated Filmmaker with a passion for the visual arts that dates to his early days as a graffiti artist. In August 2023, HBO released Telemarketers, a 3-part limited documentary series created, executive produced and co-directed by Lipman-Stern. Time Magazine called it, "One of the Most Exciting Docuseries in Recent Years!" Sam Believ founded LaWayra retreat together with his wife Estefania in 2021. LaWayra was born as a passion project from the desire to drink medicine from our home and share medicine with some friends and slowly grew to become one of the best Ayahuasca retreats in the world. When I entered the realm of psychedelic medicines, no medicine was more popular & talked about more than that of Ayahuasca. I have been fascinated with this medicine for years in hearing so many stories & featuring so many people on the show that have had experiences with it & being as how I have yet to experience this medicine myself, you could say that my curiosity has been peaked for quite some time on it. Así que este umbral atravesado nos dice que quedó sembrado las intenciones que habemos puesto en consideración de la energía que nos sustenta, y que será valioso que esta semana revisemos esas intenciones. También esa llegada de la #Luna a #Géminis con #Marte allí, es ideal para suavizar esas tensiones que nos han venido empujando a reflexiones profundas en nuestra emocionalidad. Es cómo si la parte no reconocida de nosotros, el lado oscuro de la luna, estuviera teniendo conversaciones complejas y algo bélicas, con este #Marte que aún está en sombra de su retrogradación. Es increíble cómo podemos comprender cuando llevamos luz, consciencia, presencia, a esas conversaciones que traman algo. Es una “conspiración” entre eso que amamos y eso que no reconocemos en nosotros. Y es parte de esta dualidad, tener esas conversaciones, porque todo hace parte del todo. Así que no hay que negarlo, no hay que sustentarlo y hay que ser conscientes que hay algo que debemos ver más allá de las sombras. Cuando tomas #Yage o #Ayahuasca te dicen cuando veas, vas a encontrar una primera sombra, esa no es real, verás otra sombra, tampoco es real, una tercera sombra tampoco lo es, sólo lo que hay detrás de la tercera sombra empieza a mostrar lo que hay que ver con los ojos de la #percepción. Ayahuasca, also known as Yage, has long been integral to shamanic healing rituals in western Amazonia. Consumed in healing and diagnostic rituals, this mixture of plants includes ingredients like monoamine oxidase inhibitors and dimethyl tryptamine, which when consumed together, yields strong purgative and hallucinogenic effects. Other plants, known as Chondur (Cyperus spp.) are also important elements of the ritual, and are key in both cleansing spaces and guiding visions. When we think of traditional medicines from the Amazon, our thoughts immediately turn to vines of Yage or Ayahuasca, and so, while we do discuss this vine with Colombian Anthropologist Hernando Echeverri, we also explore more of the varities which grow in the region of the Putumayo. Speaking with the authority of Michael Taussig, Echeverri shares with us experiences about his period of investigating and studying traditional medicines, following ancient medicinal routes through the Putumayo and learning from shamans in the region. Echeverri tells us about how the people of the city of Mocoa have been turning to traditional and ancient medicines to cope with the trauma of the aftermath of the disaster which befell the community in 2017 when a landslide killed more than three hundred people. Carlos Tanner is the director of the Ayahuasca Foundation in Iquitos, Peru. He has been a student of plant medicine for more than 10 years. He speaks to us here about his experiences over the years with Ayahuasca and how it has transformed his life and also the lives of those who have worked with this plant at his Foundation.

This is our first episode from our series, "The Yage Tapes", in which we will be in conversation with various individuals who have participated in Ayahuasca ceremonies with shamans in various parts of South America. Emma Lucy Shaw is a Scottish/English visionary artist who lost both her parents at an early age and ended up homeless not long after. She stayed with friends, moving from place to place and eventually set off to travel throughout Scandinavia, finding work and shelter when she was able. Her life took a dramatic turn after she journeyed to Peru to participate in ayahuasca ceremonies with shamans in the Amazon. She is now back in the UK where she has found a new and fulfilling life for herself and spends much of her time creating her art.

This week's installment of Plant Spirit Awakening features the first part of a fascinating, 2-part interview with a man named Benjamin regarding Ayahuasca and a recent trip he took to the Peruvian Amazon to do a "dieta" (intensive) with the shaman Don Diego.
