A win away at St James' Park has been unheard of in recent years for Fulham. Previous to this fixture, Fulham had only won once out of the last nine Premier League meetings with Newcastle. Goals from our two number 9s rescued Fulham fans from our pit of sorrow following a dismal loss to Manchester United.George is joined by Farrell, Dan and, making his Fulhamish debut, Jordan Wilson-Pearce. They reflect on a great away day to Newcastle and the elation that followed Fulham coming from behind to secure three points. Despite the fixture being a game of two halves, goals from Jiminez and Muniz sent fans home with a permanant smile on their faces. They review Chris Kavanagh's performance through gritted teeth and return to the conversation surrounding Pereira's status at the club following his sublime set-up for Fulham's second goal.In part two, they answer your listener questions on how the team will set-up against Nottingham Forest in the next Premier League fixture, how to improve home form and have a little bit of fun considering which Fulhamish member might give Andersen a run for his money in a foot race.--SHOW-LINKS:If you enjoy Fulhamish, please consider contributing a small amount monthly to help pay our costs. It is so satisfying to see those red tears on Arsenal's faces after a wet and stormy afternoon at the Cottage. Despite referee Chris Kavanagh's best efforts, Jimenez's first-half goal granted Fulham a well-earned point against the Gunners. One well-drilled side met another with Fulham holding the set-piece masters at bay. On the pod, we look back at the stellar performances from across the pitch - how long do you have for us to recap them all? We analyse how Fulham managed to frustrate Arsenal's forward play, reflect on the glory of that late, disallowed goal and pour out our gripes against Chris Kavanagh's refereeing performance. In part two, George picks some listener questions and, to round-up, we each pick a player of Fulham vintage that we would most like to see brought back for the 2024-25 squad. That's right—we're back in the heady world of sense-making, but don't worry, we're just in time to witness the final resolution of the ever-looming 'Meaning Crisis.'Join Matt and Chris as they embark on an epic journey with the cognitively inclined philosopher John Vervaeke and none other than the uber-guru, Jordan Peterson, himself. Together, they navigate a vast semantic web of meaning that spans discussions of Power, Beauty, Love, Religion, and, of course... the Logos!Along the way, we'll probe the limits of complex wordplay and autodidactic insights, consider the ancient art of delegation, and ponder how the religious-shaped void might just be filled with engagement in Dialogos. On the more mundane level, we'll also explore the inner workings of Jordisan Academy, the logistics of the 'We Who Wrestle with God' tour, upcoming Sensemaking cruises, and the vital multivitamins every Responsible Man should be taking. So come along as Matt and Chris grapple with the Omega Rule, cast aside their reductive materialism, and bow down in horror and awe to worship the words that the eternal Logos issues forth.LinksThe Meaning Crisis: Resolution | Dr. John Vervaeke | EP 482The Stoa: Wisdom Signalling & the Wisdom of Criticism w/ John Veraveke, Chris M, Chris Kavanagh, & Matt BrowneA Bit of Fry and Laurie: A Bit of Fry & Laurie Concerning LanguageJohn Vervaeke: Awakening from the Meaning Crisis

Kelly Cates presents Super Sunday from Old Trafford and is joined by Jamie Redknapp, Darren Bent and Ashley Young who watched Tottenham comprehensively beat Manchester United 3-0. Gary Neville watched from the gantry as Spurs impressed and outclassed their opponents from the very start but United aided them with a lacklustre performance. Neville labelled the display as a ‘shocking and sobering day' for the club. Redknapp agreed and believes Man United's progression is going backwards, going on to say that ‘they're at rock bottom at the moment'.The hosts' task was made even more difficult when Bruno Fernandes was dismissed for a high challenge on James Maddison minutes before half-time. The Red Devils captain spoke after the match and felt the tackle did not warrant a red card by referee Chris Kavanagh but admitted that he had let his teammates down. There is also reaction from goalscorer Brennan Johnson and player of the match Micky van de Ven, as well as both managers. Ange Postecoglou hailed his players' performance, saying that they were a ‘joy to watch'. In contrast, Erik ten Hag conceded that Tottenham were the dominant side and his team were poor in possession. The United manager also avoided questions on whether the club is moving forward under his leadership, saying that 'it is not the time to talk about progression after such a defeat'.

Everton have launched an appeal against the red card handed to Dominic Calvert-Lewin against Crystal Palace. The forward was sent off amid controversy in the FA Cup third round at Selhurst Park after referee Chris Kavanagh was ordered to review his challenge on Nathaniel Clyne. Kavanagh had seen no issue with the incident in real-time but, predictably, reversed his call once he was sent to the pitch side monitor. It was a contentious decision that has sparked outrage inside and outside the Everton camp. And while the Blues were still able to fight through the adversity and take the game to a replay it will have serious consequences for the club. No more will you have to live with the shame of not knowing how many syllables there are in anti-establishmentarianism. Hugh Woozencroft is joined by Gregor Robertson, Tom Clarke and Tom Roddy to look back at the midweek Premier League football and discuss the biggest stories.Frank Lampard has return to Chelsea as their interim manager until the end of the season, but was it a right decision? Will that galvanize the players ahead of the Champions League, or should they have stuck with Potter if there permanent replacement will be appointed in the summer? (00:00)West Ham were thrashed 5-1 at home to Newcastle on Wednesday night, as the pressure ramps up on David Moyes. Should the club stick with him, or do they make a change to try and keep them in the league? (28:20)Are Newcastle now favourites to finish in the Top 4? How much credit does Eddie Howe deserve for recovering from a mini-blip last month to lead them to third in the Premier League table? (34:40)Nottingham Forest show their support to under-fire manager Steve Cooper, but if their eight-match winless run continues, should the club make a change, or is peer pressure from the supporters stopping the owners from sacking him? (38:00)Leicester City are still without a manager as they lost at home to in-form Aston Villa - do we consider Aston Villa to be a threat next season under Unai Emery? Who should replace Rodgers at Leicester, Martin O'Neill or Rafael Benitez? (44:56)Fulham's Aleksandr Mitrovic has been banned for 8 games for a push on referee Chris Kavanagh in their defeat to Manchester United last month, but is that the right amount of time, or does he deserve stronger punishment? (53:23)We end the show by looking ahead to huge games in the EFL and National League, as Burnley can be promoted back to the Premier League this weekend, and Wrexham face Notts County in a huge game at the top of England's fifth tier. If you have managed to avoid the phenomenon of QAnon up until now, then congratulations! Your life is likely better for not knowing. Sadly many of us have been forced not only to learn about the 'enigmatic'(/idiotic) Q and his merry band of followers but also to witness the consequences of the movement during events like January 6th.Travis View (the pen name of Logan Strain) is part of the motley crew of the hugely popular QAnon Anonymous podcast that attempts to document the phenomenon of QAnon. From undercover investigations to creative writing, the QAnon Anonymous team (including previous guest Annie Kelly) have approached the topic with a creative and anthropological approach. We sit down with Travis and ask him to provide us with the 101 on QAnon before we delve into some of the more arcane topics, including cultish splinter groups, the psychology of QAnon adherents, just how much of a threat he thinks the movement poses, and how does he stay sane while looking at depressing craziness week in and week out.Travis is a wealth of information and a groovy guy to boot. It's finally here! In what has to be our most meta episode to date, Matt and Chris tackle the meta-philosophy / meta-spirituality / meta-science that is Sensemaking. You might say sensemaking is sense to the power of 2. But what is sensemaking, really? Well, that's a tricky question because as Jordan Hall says; no one can simply be told what sensemaking is. It is the escape hatch out of The Matrix, it is the finger pointing at the moon, it is a possibility space in an nth dimensional cube.... whatever the hell it is, some people are pretty sure it's the solution to all of humanity's problems. Exciting! So, since defining sensemaking is like trying to staple a jellyfish to a wall, it is very understandable that Jordan Hall, Jamie Wheal, and Daniel Schmachtenberger would take 2 hours and 40 minutes out of their busy schedule, and have a meta-conversation about this meta-topic, where they try to decipher exactly what this strange beast is and do some sensemaking about sensemaking. And it's even MORE understandable that Chris Kavanagh and Matthew Browne would take even longer out of their own schedules to try to analyse THAT discourse: sensemaking about sensemaking about sensemaking. Shifting to power notation for brevity, this episode is sensemaking cubed, which equals sense to the power of 4. How did we go? Well, sensemaking is like an elephant and everybody's got a piece of it. Chris is tweaking the tail, Matt's busy fondling the trunk, Daniel's inspecting the ears, and Jordan Hall is riding that bad boy, trampling poor Jamie Wheal and scaring all the monkeys. But we get there, we get there... So join us as we operate in 75 simultaneous paradigms, make not just sense but anti-nonsense, and discover what the difference really is between a puzzle and a photograph. Once again, VAR has dominated the headlines—it seems like there's a new controversy every week. I mean, the Argentine Lionel Messi (none other than Alexis Mac Allister) would've gotten a hat-trick were it not for a certain Chris Kavanagh sitting in front of a monitor in west London. Regardless, there were many incredible moments from this week's action, like Ivan Toney's hat trick and Man United's statement victory over Arsenal at Old Trafford. We also discuss when the optimal time to Wildcard is, and grumble about the lack of exciting captaincy options for GW 7. Also known as the hosts of a small academic podcast Very Bad Wizards. Stealing the format of their show we have a culture war heavy intro section featuring discussion of Joe Rogan censorship, covid debates, Japanese maid cafes, and the great ghost debate of 2022. Following that we move on to an in-depth round-table discussion of the 2012 Paul Thomas Anderson movie 'The Master'. The movie explores the relationship between a wastrel and a cult leader and features performances by Joacquin Phoenix, Philip Seymour Hoffman, and Amy Adams. God lytt!

Chris Kavanagh is a cognitive anthropologist, and the co-host of the increasingly popular and influential podcast 'Decoding the Gurus'. This is a podcast that critiques many of the new breed of public intellectuals, including some who have been featured on Rebel Wisdom. Together with co-host, psychologist Matt Browne, they analyse the methods and messages of what they've described as 'secular gurus'. This is an important conversation, about the necessity of criticism, of what counts as good and bad faith, and how truth seeking gets warped. It's a controversial project for many, and in this conversation, Rebel Wisdom's David Fuller puts many of those criticisms to Chris directly.  Alongside this video, David Fuller has written a detailed and exhaustive analysis on Substack, highly recommended to read: https://rebelwisdom.substack.com/p/decoding-the-gurus-and-the-necessity?r=ye9pq&s=w&utm_campaign=post&utm_medium=web Also referenced in the conversation are: An earlier recording with Chris 'Criticising the IDW': https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ByZCCmQVPdg Chris's presentation of the 'Gurometer' at The Stoa: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_EazLoBk9gA Peter Limberg's 'Memetic Tribes of Culture War 2.0' piece: https://medium.com/s/world-wide-wtf/memetic-tribes-and-culture-war-2-0-14705c43f6bb

Chris Kavanagh is cognitive anthropologist and one-half of the team behind Decoding The Gurus, a podcast that bills itself as “an anthropologist and a psychologist listening to the greatest minds the world has to offer and trying their best to understand what they're talking about.” By “greatest minds” Chris and his co-host, the Australian psychologist Matthew Browne, are talking mainly about aspiring or established public intellectuals who've gained large followings on YouTube, often for questioning mainstream media narratives and challenging liberal pieties. (Listeners of The Unspeakable are no doubt familiar with at least some of these figures, a few of whom have appeared on the show.) They've also done deep dives into figures like Joe Rogan, Russel Brand, Brené Brown and Gwyneth Paltrow. Chris and Matt are sympathetic to some of what these folks have to say, but skeptical of the overall phenomenon of intellectuals as internet influencers and they spend a lot of time laughing at the self-seriousness of their subjects. That said, anyone they discuss has a standing offer to come on show and defend themselves. In this conversation, Chris and Meghan talk about why these figures can be at once fascinating and maddening, what happened when YouTuber Chris Williamson joined the show to defend himself, and why Chris, who's originally from Northern Ireland and currently lives in Japan, thinks Americans are especially receptive to guru logic.   Guest Bio: Chris Kavanagh is a Specially appointed Associate Professor at the College of Contemporary Psychology and a Researcher at the Center for Studies of Social Cohesion at Oxford University. His research interests include East Asian religions, ritual behavior, and the bonding effects of shared dysphoria. Currently he is based in Japan.   The episode of The Unspeakable is sponsored by Better Help online therapy. Visit Betterhelp.com/Unspeakable for a special offer.

Listeners might remember Chris Williamson from our episode on Gad Saad. He was the former love island contestant who interviewed Gad and appeared to have taken an IDW turn. So while Matt & Chris focused their critical attention primarily on the master of irony, Gad Saad, they also raised a rather skeptical eye towards Chris Williamson as well. And listeners, they were not kind. Not at all... Nevertheless, Chris W. reached out and accepted our standing offer for any guru covered to come on to the show and respond to the criticisms we made. The result was an interesting and wide ranging exchange that covered issues such as what it's like for a non-specialist to interview famous academics, the incentives and pressures at play in the modern social media ecosystem, and how DTG commentary feels when you are on the receiving side! For fans of cringe comedy this episode might be particularly enjoyable as off-hand comments and cutting remarks are discussed and dissected for their fairness. But (spoiler!) everyone survives to the end. Chris (Kavanagh) also took a degree of pleasure in watching the alleged 'nice guy' of the podcast squirm over his cheeky remarks. All in all there is some nice symmetry, in that everybody had something to cringe about. But perhaps this dialogue will alchemically transform that cringe into spiritual gold, and we can all learn something and grow a little as people or podcasters? Or maybe not? Time will tell, ay? Have a listen and see what you think! P.S. Sincere apologies for the audio quality, especially on Matt's end. We recorded this at an ungodly hour of the morning and Matt was too zombified to select the good microphone. Or the DISC could have interfered with it... Something like that. Sam Harris probably needs no introduction in our neck of the info-sphere as he is seemingly never far from the spotlight... or the occasional controversy. We've had some nice things to say about Sam, but we've also made some harsh criticisms, particularly regarding a short episode he released which seemed to suggest it was necessary to practice introspective meditation in order to fully understand why his political and culture war views were correct. Although we've never done a ‘proper' episode on Sam, we have always stated that anyone we discuss is welcome to come on the show and discuss (or dispute) our charges – which is exactly what Sam is doing here! This interview is split into two sections. In the first, we discuss Sam's app and whether it might encourage guru dynamics and the role of meditation and (non) self-awareness in forming an accurate political outlook. We put some of our criticisms to Sam especially regarding guru dynamics, issues of introspective verification of truth claims, and the potential for abusive practices and manipulation by gurus. In the second section, we turn to some of the more controversial topics that have sprung up around Sam over the years. Sam responds to proposals that he might be as tribal as the rest of us suckers, and he defends himself against accusations that he might have selective empathy and blind spots towards the rightish side of the political spectrum. We talk about tribalism and the potential distorting effects of personal relationships, as well as anthropologists, Islamism, wokism, right-wing extremism, and how political biases manifest themselves on the left and right. Although the format is an interview, it does get quite ‘debate-y' at times. And it's probably true that we don't come to a grand reconciliation of views at the end. However, nobody storms off, so what you get is a frank and friendly but robust exchange of views. We hope you enjoy it. West Ham were narrowly beaten 1-0 by Chelsea on Saturday as their hopes of qualifying for the Champions League took a severe knock.  The Hammers lack of January transfer activity appears to be catching up with them.  But most of that was forgotten after the game because ten minutes from time referee Chris Kavanagh made the most inexplicable decision ever when he decided to send Fabian Balbuena off for kicking the football during a game of... wait for it... football.  It was a disgrace and a scandal and another knife in the heart of our great game and decisions like it, along with the appalling application of VAR, are ruining our sport.  Former Premier League ref Mark Halsey makes his We Are West Ham debut to give his take on the decision and he does not pull any punches.  Will Pugh, Jame Jones and Tom Edwards are reunited after three weeks where at least one of the lads was absent.  The guys review the Chelsea game in finite detail. Manchester United got its first Premier League points of the season thanks to a 100th-minute penalty from Bruno Fernandes to finally win 3-2 in an enthralling game against Brighton and Hove Albion.Brighton opened the scoring, a coolly finished Neal Maupay penalty giving the hosts the lead before Lewis Dunk put the ball into his own net to level the scores just before half-time.Marcus Rashford's solo goal put United on top, and Brighton thought it had snatched a dramatic late draw thanks to Solly March's header before Fernandes' penalty, 10 minutes after the 90-minute mark. While it eventually secured the win, Manchester United lived on the edge, with Brighton hitting the woodwork five times during the game and had one awarded penalty overruled by video assistant referee (VAR) and another potential one waved away by the referee."We left so much space for them to play, we were not as aggressive, we gave away two goals" Fernandes told BT Sport after the game. "We have to do much better."Brighton did very well but maybe because we are not aggressive as we want. We need to recover more balls, press better, lose less possession. Maybe they deserved more. The point is score goals not hit the bar. Sometimes you have to have some luck."An up and down affairAfter being surprised by Crystal Palace last week, Manchester United was hoping to make a more positive start on the south of England against Brighton. But it was the home side who made the brighter sight, as with Leandro Trossard smashing the ball against David de Gea's left post -- the Belgian midfielder would go onto hit the woodwork twice more.In the opening two games of the season, the woodwork has stopped as many shots for Manchester United's opponents this season as goalkeeper de Gea."Unbelievable, the feeling I can't describe, we were the better team today," Trossard said. "We deserved at least a point, it's a shame. Sometimes it's just not your day."And Brighton eventually made the pressure count -- only after Mason Greenwood had a goal ruled out for offside -- as Maupay chipped the penalty, which was awarded for Fernandes' foul on the exciting Tariq Lamptey, past the despairing de Gea.It took United just three minutes to equalize though, with Dunk only able to deflect home a cross from Nemanja Matic. After half-time, Rashford's mazy run and finish gave the Manchester side the lead. However in the 95th minute, Brighton thought it has won a point right at the death, as March headed in a cross from Alireza Jahanbakhsh. But an even later penalty, spotted and awarded via VAR after the on-field official Chris Kavanagh had blown to signal the end of the match, was smashed into the top corner by Fernandes.Fernandes' goal at 99:45 minutes is the latest scored in the Premier League since Juan Mata's strike for Chelsea against Norwich in August 2011, scored in 100:03 minutes. The result would be even more painful for Brighton as it had a penalty of its own overturned by VAR in the second half, after Aaron Connolly was adjudged to have been fouled by Paul Pogba, only for referee Chris Kavanagh to change his mind."We got away with one. Maybe one point we deserved, we didn't deserve more. But the character deserved more" Man Utd boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer told BT Sport."Last season we had too many draws, so that is a big plus for us. You have to be happy Jose is not here to measure the goal posts."They are a difficult team to play against. We don't have the legs and sharpness, but we will get there. We have plenty of work ahead."text by Ben Morse, CNN

Facebook this week announced new measures to protect users' privacy. The scandal has highlighted the challenge facing tech firms in ensuring personal information is not used for profit. Cambridge Analyica, the company at the heart of the privacy scandal engulfing Facebook, is accused of fraudulently obtaining data from the social media giant and then using it to run election ads on behalf of US president Donald Trump and the Vote Leave campaign in the UK. "These tech giants are actually using the users' data without their knowing, and what exactly they're using the data for," Arunima Tiwari, a Global Policy Analyst with the Indian research firm R Strategic, told RFI. "And they are losing the users' trust because of these scams," she said. A Cambridge academic called Aleksandr Kogan made a 'Test Your Personality' app, and paid users a small fee to get them to download it. Two hundred and seventy thousand people did, sharing details about themselves, and unknowingly, their friends as well. Fifty million Facebook users in total were targetted. The information was then sold to Cambridge Analytica. The UK data analysis company vigorously denies the charges levelled against it, but declined RFI's request for an interview. "It is categorically untrue that Cambrige Analytica has never used Facebook data," Christopher Wylie, the company's former research director, who revealed the scandal, told British MPs on Tuesday 27 March. "The acquisition using Alexander Kogan's app was the foundational data set of the company," Wylie said. The scandal has raised disturbing questions about the use of social media in political campaigns. Facebook insists it had no idea the data taken from its site was being used, but it took months to act and the episode has exposed yet again, its laxity towards privacy, after coming under fire in 2015 for not doing enough to tackle fake news. No hacking "Facebook is in the wrong because they were too lackadaisical about how they treated their users' privacy," reckons Chris Kavanagh, a Cognitive Anthropologist at Oxford, living in Japan. However, he dismisses reports that the data breach was a hack, saying users granted Facebook permission for a third party app to access their data. "They made use of a feature that was freely available to any developer on the Facebook platform that applied for it, prior to 2015. Describing it as a breach, suggests that they somehow exploited the system, but in reality they were making use of a feature that tens of thousands of developers use to harvest profile information and that kind of thing," he told RFI. Emma Suleiman, founder and CEO of a digital PR agency in Paris, agrees. “To be clear, it's not just Facebook," she told RFI. "Everything you do online is tracked, seen and registered. There are databases all over the world filled with your online life. This data is used for research, analysis, targeted advertising and probably for companies and governments spying on you. Is this a bad thing? It’s there any way but what you make of it is the real question.” Tiwari for her part, wants better regulation. She says crypted language has enabled tech firms like Facebook to manipulate users. "What they do is prepare a privacy policy that is vague and ambiguous, and users do not necessarily understand the language and what they're trying to portray." Need for public awareness Kavanagh hopes that the scandal will encourage users to be more cautious and to read the small print. Right now, the terms and conditions are "buried so deep in the settings" that no one knows they can opt out of a third party app and prevent their data being shared by their friends, he said. A new European law, called the General Data Protection Regulation or GDPR, set to be unveiled on May 25, wants to change that. "GDPR will grant users greater control of their data," explains Tiwari. "If any user wants to know what data a company has on them, they can, and have their data deleted," she said. The outcry has stirred calls for users to disconnect through the hashtag #deletefacebook. Trust is particularly low in Nigeria, after claims by Wylie that a Canadian-based affiliate of Cambridge Analytica spread violent images in to discredit opponents in the 2007 and 2015 elections. "The general discussion that we've been having is that people will have to limit the amount of information that they give out online," Nnamdi Anekwe-Chive, director of the research firm Chive-GPS, told RFI. Despite efforts by Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg to enhance the privacy of users, Anekwe-Chive says that "people are thinking of ways to limit the amount of data they drop online and curtail the amount of data that is available online."
