Today, we explore the recent compendium of responsa called Shu"T PUAH, produced by PUAH, an organization that helps families with the range of challenges in the fertility journey, including halacha, medicine, finances, counseling and more. We had the privilege to hear from Rabbi Elan Segelman, PUAH's rabbinic director in America. We explore different perspectives on artificial insemination and surrogacy - and walk away with an appreciation for the important work PUAH is doing within the realm of responsa and the real lived experience. Rabbi Elan Segelman is the rabbinic director for PUAH in America. After studying in Israel for two years at Yeshivat Kerem B'Yavneh, Rabbi Segelman attained a B.A. in Psychology from Touro College's Lander College for Men, as well as an M.A. from Touro College's Graduate School of Jewish Studies. Shortly after completing his Semicha, he was appointed as a Shoel U'Maishiv and Rebbe in the Lander College Judaic Studies Program. In 2016, Rabbi Segelman became the Rabbinic Educator at New York Medical College & Touro College of Dental Medicine in Valhalla, NY. Rabbi Segelman currently resides in Los Angeles, California, where he serves as the Rabbi of the Young Israel of Hancock Park. We don't have a new episode this week, but we invite you to revisit our conversation with Reuven and Shani Taragin on the future of Religious Zionism, originally aired Jan. 16, 2024.In this episode of the 18Forty Podcast, we talk to Rav Reuven and Rabbanit Shani Taragin, educational directors of World Mizrachi, about what comes next for Israel's Dati Leumi (Religious Zionist) community. Additionally, we speak with Gideon Davis, a Religious Zionist soldier serving in Gaza.Mistakenly, we tend to think of the Dati Leumi community as Israel's analog to Modern Orthodoxy. That makes us miss, however, that Religious Zionism is a rich worldview unto itself, and is something we all can learn from. In this episode we discuss:How does the Dati Leumi community differ from the American Modern Orthodox community? What can American Jews better understand about the sacrifices and contributions made by Religious Zionists? What does it mean to be a member of the Dati Leumi community in 2024?Tune in to hear a conversation about how a religious mindset can expand beyond personal piety to include a deep commitment to the Jewish People and the world.Interview with Gideon Davis begins at 6:09.Interview with Reuven and Shani Taragin begins at 36:42.Rav Reuven Taragin is a former Wexner Fellow and Musmach of the Israeli Chief Rabbinate. Rav Taragin is the Dean of Overseas Students at Yeshivat Hakotel where he is responsible for the program's quality and message and the welfare of each of its talmidim. Rav Taragin is also the Rosh Beit Midrash at Camp Moshava (I.O.), and Rav of Kehillat Eretz Chemdah in Katamon.Rabbanit Shani Taragin is a noted author and teacher at Midreshet Lindenbaum, Midreshet Torah V'Avodah, MaTaN, Migdal Oz, Sha'alvim for Women, Lander College, and the Women's' Beit Midrash in Efrat and Ramat Shilo. The Taragins are the Educational Directors of World Mizrachi and the RZA (Religious Zionists of America), and they also serve as Roshei Beit Medrash for the Beit Medrash Program in Camp Moshava IO during the summer. In this shiur, delivered to Mevaseret alumni at Lander College for Men, Rav Burg explains why Yehuda said that their brother (Yosef) had died. Rashi teaches that Yehuda lied to avoid having to produce Yosef. On a level of Drush, Rav Burg explains that to impact Yosef, Yehuda knew that he needed to speak words from the heart. In an honest moment Yehuda came to the recognition that Yosef could not have survived Mitzrayim without his brothers.

Rabbi Shai Graucher was known as one of the closest people to Rav Chaim Kanievsky ZTL. His father, Dedi AH, legendary Jewish singer, past away only 7 weeks ago and it left a hole in Shai's heart. He decided to create an organization where he can continue to spread his father's light. After October 7th, Shai kicked everything into high gear. He is by far one of the most impactful people fighting the war by being the backbone and support for thousands of Israeli citizens & soldiers. You would not believe how much B'yachad Nenatzeiach is doing (you probably have seen the whatsapp videos). Personal visits and financial support for the families of victims. Hospital visits to wounded soldiers and citizens. Packages of essentials and toys to displaced families. Tefillin and other religious articles to soldiers and families. Visits to army bases, providing soldiers with provisions, tailored to their specific needs (clothing and gear in their size, etc.). His team even built a laundry machine, portable jacuzzis and more to help. You will literally change your brothers & sisters lives when you donate. ► Help here: https://bit.ly/weloveshai You can buy Shai & Rav Chaim Kanievsky's seforim & books: ► https://bit.ly/3MtVgRv Shai is being recorded in an awesome studio. For this episode, we're going with “work-family synergy” instead of the ubiquitous “work-life balance.” Why? Because balance, quite literally, means 50/50. And we all know when it comes to work and home life, that's not always realistic or ideal. Synergy connotes a combination, hopefully one that is mutually advantageous. And it doesn't tell us that our work and our home life needs to be balanced. Sometimes it's combined in a chaotic mixture! Join us for this DMC with Dr. Marian Stoltz-Loike who is the Dean of Touro's Lander College for Women and guides young women not only on their educational journeys, but also in finding ways to balance work, family and community. In this episode of DMC you'll hear:The challenges facing frum women in careers, trying to juggle professional and domestic responsibilitiesTips about managing school/work and familyHow women can know how and when to contribute communallyWe'd love to hear from you. BONUS EPISODE: Shakespeare's Hamlet opens with a seemingly straightforward question: “Who's there?” Who's there, indeed. The appearance of the ghost of his murdered father prompts Hamlet– and the play's 16th-century audience– to grapple with a series of philosophical and theological questions relating to death and the afterlife. Does Purgatory exist? How does one avoid posthumous punishment? Can the deceased visit the world of the living? If so, how and why? What do the living owe the dead? In this episode, Dr. Susan Weissman, Chair of Judaic Studies and Associate Professor at Lander College for Women, a division of Touro College, shares her extensive research and expertise on death and the afterlife in medieval Europe. Through a detailed analysis of ghost tales in the Talmud and Sefer Hasidim, a religious-ethical work by an elitist group of medieval Jewish German Pietists, Weissman shows how many beliefs and rituals of the period reflected in Shakespeare's Hamlet were cross-culturally shared by neighbors, Jews and Christians alike. Corrections In her concluding statements about the role of the dead in the Talmudic/Rabbinic period, Dr. Weissman speaks of the "living coming to aid or inform the dead" but meant to have said the "dead coming to aid or inform the living" (around 18:24). Dr. Trapedo mistakenly says the Rabbinic/Talmudic literature was "centuries later" instead of "centuries earlier" (around 23:08). Dr. Weissman speaks of the violence inflicted upon knights by their very own spurs "cutting into their soles," but being that there are no written words visible, listeners might hear it as "cutting into their souls," which would be inaccurate. Dr. Weissman intended the soles of their feet since these tortures were inflicted on bodies, not disembodied souls. (around 25:45). Dr. Weissman says "we have responsas," but intended "responsa" as the word is already plural. Rabbi Kolakowski presents the story of a Mennonite inmate who was upgrading in adopting the strictures of the Amish lifestyle. He claimed his religion prohibited the use of bathing using a modern showerhead. When Kolakowski encountered him, the inmate who was locked up for possession of marijuana and fleeing the state to avoid arrest, was ready to endure time in tortuous solitaire, rather than standing under the nozzle as he was ordered to by the guards.Rabbi Kivelevitz wonders if the soon to be imprisoned rioters from January 6th will enter Federal Prison with their own religious demands, such as Aaron Mostofsky, and the Nordic tattooed Shaman.Kolakowski explains the significance of the symbols emblazoned on the latter's body. Y.K.'s slightly Amish cultural touchstones are, Robert Aldrich's The Frisco Kid, with the two Jewish co-stars, Gene Wilder and Harrison Ford ,the not so accurate reality TV Series Amish Mafia, and the music video produced by Weird Al Yankovic, Amish Paradise.A.K. counters with the obvious Amish thriller, Peter Weir's, Witness which forces a contemplation on the possibility of living as a pacifist in a world wracked by violence and aggression, and for a real look into Amish life, Kivelevitz highly recommends the PBS American Experience Series, The Amish ,and the docudrama Amish Grace which tells the incredible story of a community's forgiveness and resilience after a horrendous mass shooting at West Nickel Mines. As for riots, in prison and right outside of one, Kivelevitz suggests, three classics, Raoul Walsh's White Heat, which immerses the viewer in the psychotic prison mindset, and Jules Dassan's Brute Force, which underscores the brutality of many of the correctional officers, and the release of pent up frustration on display in inmate violence. Also receiving the older Rabbi's thumbs up is Fritz Lang's unsurpassed exploration of mob terror and revenge, Fury.Kolakowski is the Facility Chaplaincy Program Director at the The State Correctional Institution (SCI) at Waymart, Pennsylvania. The institution is a medium security prison facility housing 1,100 inmates and a 120 bed Forensic Treatment Center, which provides inpatient psychiatric treatment in a secure setting for adult male offenders.Kolakowski is the first Rabbi in the history of the Commonwealth to serve as head chaplain in a state prison.Prior to his present position, he served pulpits and chaplaincy positions in Virginia and Upstate New York. The Rabbi has emerged as a talented speaker in areas of religion, politics, spirituality, popular culture, history, and interfaith affairs. Rabbi Kivelevitz questions Rabbi Kolakowski as to the number of cases where he has heard the imprisoned person claim that he was completely innocent. To Kivelevitz's surprise, Kolokowski responds that only one inmate that he has served, has stated that that the crime he was purported to have committed was a complete fiction.Kolakowski recounts the background and his interactions with a well known Rabbi who was convicted in 2009 of transporting a minor in foreign commerce for the purpose of engaging in criminal sexual activity and for engaging in sexual conduct with a minor. The pair recount a number of famous Jewish heroes ,patriarchs and martyrs who have been falsely accused, imprisoned and subject to suffering.(Avraham Avinu ,Yosef HaTzadik ,Rav Schneur Zalman of Liadi, Colonel Alfred Dreyfus,Leo Frank)Y.K.'s Not quite Innocent/Not really guilty Movie and TV recommendations are Edward G. Ulmer's noir-classic, Detour ,Vincent Price's first star turn, The Invisible Man Returns, and the first season Simpsons episode Krusty Gets Busted .A.K.'s list of wrongly accused and imprisoned films are drawn primarily from the work of Alfred Hitchcock, who uses the inscrutable oppressive hand of fate as a theme throughout his career. A.K. suggests strongly to savor, The 39 Steps, Saboteur, I Confess,The Wrong Man, and especially the films that were the apex of Hitchcock's career, North By Northwest, and The Birds. Another treat that features a man imprisoned wrongly ,is Preston Sturges' hilarious ,moving, masterpiece, Sullivan's Travels, with its strikingly poignant climax that was a milestone for a dignified representation of African-Americans on screen. For listeners who want to hear a ballad on the theme of the authorities rush to judge and convict and unfair treatment of people of color ,A.K. offers Bob Dylan's, The Hurricane.Kolakowski is the Facility Chaplaincy Program Director at the The State Correctional Institution (SCI) at Waymart, Pennsylvania. Rabbi Kolakowski describes his Chaplain duties in prison during Christmas, stressing the importance of injecting positivity to the inmates at a time when suicide incidents spike dramatically. Rabbi Kivelevitz conjectures that Kolakowski's youthful celebration of the Holiday, growing up as a child in an interfaith home, has helped him relate to the prisoners with an understanding of how important this time is.The pair discuss Santa Claus's easy accessibility for children to latch on to as a figure of hope as opposed to comprehending the theological riddle that is Jesus. The Chaplain alludes to the fascinating, winding. Capitalistic historical road that has morphed a Third century Turkish Monk into the Kris Kringle figure of today.Y.K.'s Chanukah/X-Mas Movie recommendations this week are, Disney Channel's 2003 basketball-losers feel good flick, Full Court Miracle , along with Yehuda Wurtzel's 1983 animated near-classic Lights: A Story of Chanukah ,featuring the voice talents of Judd Hirsch and Leonard Nimoy, and the thought provoking short historical drama The Eighth Day which highlights the conflict between assimilationist and traditional Judaism, whose roots can be traced to the period of the Misyavnim.A.K.'s list of Chanukah (Jewish identity preserved or watered down in the face of modern pressure)films/TV programs are Rod Serling's1971 Night Gallery episode,The Messiah of Mott Street, featuring a powerful turn by Edward G. Robinson as a dying Jewish man who experiences a Christmas miracle, which suggests that distinct ethnic Judaism can and should be subsumed in the Unitarian Christian message of brotherly love.Kivelevitz contrasts this early 70's entry to a program aired 25 years later, a fourth season X-Files episode ,Kaddish, which emphasizes Jewish particularism and the mysterious unknowable essence of what forged our identities and keeps us distinct ,feared and in some corners, hated. As an example of the Jewish conceit of the middle part of the twentieth century that "we yidden" would act as moral agents of change in an increasingly decadent western society, Kivelevitz points to the standout performance of Jack Kruschen in Billy Wilder's masterpiece, The Apartment, and its coda of "being a mensch", which is promoted by Wilder and his co-writer I.A.L. Diamond, as the main credo of Judaism as embodied by Kruschen's humorous, heroic, wise Doctor Dreyfus. In the open discussion that always ensues, the pair make reference to the two versions of The Jazz Singer, the original from1927 ,and the Neil Diamond remake from 1980,as well as regretting not adding Disney's The Absent-Minded Professor to the foiled wedding list films from the last episode, and Kivelevitz's tributes to the unique(Jewish) personas that were Ed Wynn and Andy Kaufman. Kolakowski is the Facility Chaplaincy Program Director at the The State Correctional Institution (SCI) at Waymart, Pennsylvania. Noting Rabbi Kolakowski's inability to record last week, due to the many marriages he was called on to perform as a regular official outside of his prison duties, Rabbi Kivelevitz asks Kolakowski about about weddings that have taken place in prison confines, and his experiences with them. The chaplain details the rationale behind a large percentage of these pairings, and comments on the dwindling phenomenon of conjugal visits for incarcerated persons. Y.K.'s Wedding Movie recommendations this week are, the Three Stooges Short Three Smart Saps , Bela Lagosi's horror vehicle, The Corpse Vanishes, all-around hack Gene Fowler Junior's, I Married a Monster from Outer Space, which Kolakowski pairs with The Alligator People as juicy sci-fi wedding/marriage viewing.(and available in the public domain). A.K.'s list of weddings that didn't turn out as planned begins with the incredibly smart and hilarious Preston Sturges gem,The Palm Beach Story, the allegorical Western/social commentary film, Silver Lode , and the sentimental crowd pleaser, While You Were Sleeping along with an honorable mention of Mike Nichols' The Graduate(especially for its iconic final scene). In the discussion of celluloid classics and camp, the pair make reference and offer thumbnail analyses of Ridley Scott's horror sci-fi masterpiece, Alien ,and the Hal Roach studio's Road Show, along with two quick jabs at Stanley Kubrick's 2001-A Space OdysseyKolakowski is the Facility Chaplaincy Program Director at the The State Correctional Institution (SCI) at Waymart, Pennsylvania. Proceeding from the recent lifting of Jonathan Pollard's parole by Trump's State department,Rabbi Kivelevitz asks Rabbi Joseph Kolakowski about precautions taken in high profile cases that could limit the involvement Jewish chaplains could have with those prisoners.Kolakowski points to the mini- scandal that erupted when his comrade in Kiruv posted a video to YouTube that generated negative repercussions towards him. Kivelevitz comments on the incorrectness of celebrating Shalom Rubashkin as a hero, and wonders if precious Jewish political capital has been irretrievably lost in efforts launched for the release of Pollard and Rubashkin.Thanksgiving Movie recommendations this week are, the original King Kong,(exploration and exploitation), John Ford's masterpiece, The Searchers,(our troubled Native-American legacy) the John Hughes comedy, Planes,Trains, and Automobiles,(the gaping divide between our ideals and reality in Thanksgiving celebration)along with an honorable mention of Barry Levinson's Avalon(the Jewish immigrant experience honed sharply and scenes of the feast with Hebraic accents).Kolakowski is the Facility Chaplaincy Program Director at the The State Correctional Institution (SCI) at Waymart, Pennsylvania. Rabbi Joseph Kolakowski shares his experiences with inmates who had been clergymen and religious leaders prior to their incarceration .He informs Rabbi Kivelevitz on the phenomenon of prisoners who adopt influential religious positions only post their internment, and the balancing act the administration has in meeting the spiritual needs of the men and not allowing individuals to wield undue significance.Kolakowski recounts the story of one imprisoned sex-offender who gained some semblance of redemption as the Shaman of the inmates who identified as Native American.Movie recommendations this week are, Heavens Above,After the Fox,The Pilgrim, and One Flew over the Cuckoo's Nest, and The Birdman of Alcatraz, all associated with Chaplains ,Prisoners and Indian Chiefs. We often talk about the good old days, but for most of the past 200 years, chinuch was only a fraction of what it is today. Dr. Henry Abramson shares with us the sad history of the early 19th century in Russia when Jewish children were either conscripted into the Russian Army at a young age for 25 years, or were sent to a government school where they had no Jewish education at all. Today's chinuch system is far more superior than it ever was previously. Today's era requires us to shift our approach to how we teach. Dr. Henry Abramson is a dean at Lander College, a noted Jewish historian, and the host of Jewish History in Daf Yomi, available on the All Daf app. Questions, comments, and guest ideas can be submitted on chinuchshow.com Get an email every time a new show is posted! It was a true honor to sit down with Sarri Singer for this interview. Until 9/11, Sarri worked a few blocks away from the World Trade Center. Deeply moved by the tragedy of 9/11, Sarri decided to resign from her position in December 2001 and move to Israel to help victims of terror. On June 11, 2003, Sarri was on Bus 14 in Jerusalem when an 18 year old Palestinian terrorist dressed as a religious Jew boarded and blew himself up. 16 people were killed, including all those seated and standing around her, and over 100 people were injured. Sarri was hospitalized for two weeks and then returned to New Jersey to be with family. Her story became high profile. She appeared on television stations such as CBS, FoxNews, CNN and radio interviews. She spoke before Congressmen and Senators in Washington, D.C. and politicians in New York and New Jersey. In September 2003 she returned to work and volunteering in Israel. In June 2004, she returned to the United States to take care of ongoing medical issues associated with her attack. Sarri is the Founder and Director of Strength to Strength (www.stosglobal.org), which focuses on bringing together victims of terrorism together from around the world and assisting with long term psychological needs. Sarri has addressed audiences throughout the United States, Canada, Europe, South America and Israel and continues to share her unique insight into the ongoing struggle for victims of terror in Israel and around the world. Sarri is currently the Director of Career Services at the Lander College for Women, A Division of Touro College and working on her Master's in Peace and Conflict Studies at Rutgers University. Fun Fact about Sarri: two and half years ago, a good friend forced her to run with her in the Miami half marathon and she's found that she loves running, especially in the mornings. It's her downtime to think and try and get some clarity.
