And are they highly specific to each individual or generalizable to most people? What are the differences between conceptual and phenomenal self-love? Why might it be useful to view shame as a kink? How does self-love or self-acceptance differ from indulging or even just tolerating the worst parts of yourself? What's the best way to think about "woo"? How genuine is the stereotypical guru demeanor of serenity, graciousness, and attentiveness? Is it possible for people with aphantasia to learn visualization? What's so interesting about perfume? What can people do to become better writers?Sasha Chapin is a writer currently living in California. Most of his recent writing is on his Substack. Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: Why so many "racists" at Manifest?, published by Austin on June 18, 2024 on The Effective Altruism Forum. Manifest 2024 is a festival that we organized last weekend in Berkeley. By most accounts, it was a great success. On our feedback form, the average response to "would you recommend to a friend" was a 9.0/10. Reviewers said nice things like "one of the best weekends of my life" and "dinners and meetings and conversations with people building local cultures so achingly beautiful they feel almost like dreams" and "I've always found tribalism mysterious, but perhaps that was just because I hadn't yet found my tribe." Arnold Brooks running a session on Aristotle's Metaphysics. More photos of Manifest here. However, a recent post on The Guardian and review on the EA Forum highlight an uncomfortable fact: we invited a handful of controversial speakers to Manifest, whom these authors call out as "racist". Why did we invite these folks? First: our sessions and guests were mostly not controversial - despite what you may have heard Here's the schedule for Manifest on Saturday: (The largest & most prominent talks are on the left. Full schedule here.) And here's the full list of the 57 speakers we featured on our website: Nate Silver, Luana Lopes Lara, Robin Hanson, Scott Alexander, Niraek Jain-sharma, Byrne Hobart, Aella, Dwarkesh Patel, Patrick McKenzie, Chris Best, Ben Mann, Eliezer Yudkowsky, Cate Hall, Paul Gu, John Phillips, Allison Duettmann, Dan Schwarz, Alex Gajewski, Katja Grace, Kelsey Piper, Steve Hsu, Agnes Callard, Joe Carlsmith, Daniel Reeves, Misha Glouberman, Ajeya Cotra, Clara Collier, Samo Burja, Stephen Grugett, James Grugett, Javier Prieto, Simone Collins, Malcolm Collins, Jay Baxter, Tracing Woodgrains, Razib Khan, Max Tabarrok, Brian Chau, Gene Smith, Gavriel Kleinwaks, Niko McCarty, Xander Balwit, Jeremiah Johnson, Ozzie Gooen, Danny Halawi, Regan Arntz-Gray, Sarah Constantin, Frank Lantz, Will Jarvis, Stuart Buck, Jonathan Anomaly, Evan Miyazono, Rob Miles, Richard Hanania, Nate Soares, Holly Elmore, Josh Morrison. Judge for yourself; I hope this gives a flavor of what Manifest was actually like. Our sessions and guests spanned a wide range of topics: prediction markets and forecasting, of course; but also finance, technology, philosophy, AI, video games, politics, journalism and more. We deliberately invited a wide range of speakers with expertise outside of prediction markets; one of the goals of Manifest is to increase adoption of prediction markets via cross-pollination. Okay, but there sure seemed to be a lot of controversial ones… I was the one who invited the majority (~40/60) of Manifest's special guests; if you want to get mad at someone, get mad at me, not Rachel or Saul or Lighthaven; certainly not the other guests and attendees of Manifest. My criteria for inviting a speaker or special guest was roughly, "this person is notable, has something interesting to share, would enjoy Manifest, and many of our attendees would enjoy hearing from them". Specifically: Richard Hanania - I appreciate Hanania's support of prediction markets, including partnering with Manifold to run a forecasting competition on serious geopolitical topics and writing to the CFTC in defense of Kalshi. (In response to backlash last year, I wrote a post on my decision to invite Hanania, specifically) Simone and Malcolm Collins - I've enjoyed their Pragmatist's Guide series, which goes deep into topics like dating, governance, and religion. I think the world would be better with more kids in it, and thus support pronatalism. I also find the two of them to be incredibly energetic and engaging speakers IRL. Jonathan Anomaly - I attended a talk Dr. Anomaly gave about the state-of-the-art on polygenic embryonic screening. I was very impressed that something long-considered scien...
Cate seemed to be fully entrenched on the default path — she had graduated from Yale and became the Supreme Court advocate on her way to becoming a partner in her law firm. But she didn't want to live the lives of the people around her. She pivoted hard, you could almost hear car brakes squeaking as she made the turn, and over a year she became the number one female poker player in the world. She later started art and perfume companies and led operations at Avlea — a pandemic medicine company. One might think she's simply a superhuman, and what she did is beyond the grasp of mere mortals, but Cate claims that agency is learnable and joins the podcast to tell us how.

Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: The 'Neglected Approaches' Approach: AE Studio's Alignment Agenda, published by Cameron Berg on December 18, 2023 on LessWrong. Many thanks to Samuel Hammond, Cate Hall, Beren Millidge, Steve Byrnes, Lucius Bushnaq, Joar Skalse, Kyle Gracey, Gunnar Zarncke, Ross Nordby, David Lambert, Simeon Campos, Bogdan Ionut-Cirstea, Ryan Kidd, Eric Ho, and Ashwin Acharya for critical comments and suggestions on earlier drafts of this agenda, as well as Philip Gubbins, Diogo de Lucena, Rob Luke, and Mason Seale from AE Studio for their support and feedback throughout. TL;DR Our initial theory of change at AE Studio was a 'neglected approach' that involved rerouting profits from our consulting business towards the development of brain-computer interface (BCI) technology to dramatically enhance human agency, better enabling us to do things like solve alignment. Now, given shortening timelines, we're updating our theory of change to scale up our technical alignment efforts. With a solid technical foundation in BCI, neuroscience, and machine learning, we are optimistic that we'll be able to contribute meaningfully to AI safety. We are particularly keen on pursuing neglected technical alignment agendas that seem most creative, promising, and plausible. We are currently onboarding promising researchers and kickstarting our internal alignment team. As we forge ahead, we're actively soliciting expert insights from the broader alignment community and are in search of data scientists and alignment researchers who resonate with our vision of enhancing human agency and helping to solve alignment. About us Hi! We are AE Studio, a bootstrapped software and data science consulting business. Our mission has always been to reroute our profits directly into building technologies that have the promise of dramatically enhancing human agency, like Brain-Computer Interfaces (BCI). We also donate 5% of our revenue directly to effective charities. Today, we are ~150 programmers, product designers, and ML engineers; we are profitable and growing. We also have a team of top neuroscientists and data scientists with significant experience in developing ML solutions for leading BCI companies, and we are now leveraging our technical experience and learnings in these domains to assemble an alignment team dedicated to exploring neglected alignment research directions that draw on our expertise in BCI, data science, and machine learning. As we are becoming more public with our AI Alignment efforts, we thought it would be helpful to share our strategy and vision for how we at AE prioritize what problems to work on and how to make the best use of our comparative advantage. Why and how we think we can help solve alignment We can probably do with alignment what we already did with BCI You might think that AE has no business getting involved in alignment - and we agree. AE's initial theory of change sought to realize a highly "neglected approach" to doing good in the world: bootstrap a profitable software consultancy, incubate our own startups on the side, sell them, and reinvest the profits in Brain Computer Interfaces (BCI) in order to do things like dramatically increase human agency, mitigate BCI-related s-risks, and make humans sufficiently intelligent, wise, and capable to do things like solve alignment. While the vision of BCI-mediated cognitive enhancement to do good in the world is increasingly common today, it was viewed as highly idiosyncratic when we first set out in 2016. Initially, many said that AE had no business getting involved in the BCI space (and we also agreed at the time) - but after hiring leading experts in the field and taking increasingly ambitious A/B-tested steps in the right direction, we emerged as a respected player in the space (see here, here, here, and here for some examples). What is it like to be an atheist who suddenly meets God? How can poker make us think more clearly about existential risk? These are just a few of the many fascinating topics this conversation with my good friend Cate Hall covers. Cate is probably best known for her stint as a professional poker player, however she also has worked as a top level corporate lawyer in Washington, and more recently co-founded and ran a biosecurity company that aims to mitigate the threat of biorisks to humanity, like pandemics. Her life hasn't been all smooth sailing though; for a number of years, Cate experienced a severe mental health and drug addiction issues that nearly took her life. I'm so grateful to Cate for this honest and frank conversation about her experiences, and for showing us how to adopt a rational, Win-Win mindset even in the face of dire adversity. Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: On sincerity, published by Joe Carlsmith on December 23, 2022 on LessWrong. Cross-posted from my website. Audio version here, or search "Joe Carlsmith Audio" on your podcast app. Nearby is the country they call life. You will know it by its seriousness. Rilke 1. Introduction There's a thing I call “sincerity” that matters a lot to me. In particular, it's core to how I hope to orient towards the world. And it's one of the main things I look for in people and communities. My hope, in this essay, is to bring what I mean by sincerity into clearer view. But the term has a fairly rich set of associations for me, which I'm not sure will ultimately admit of a cleanly unified analysis. I start by discussing five of these associations. Sincerity seems to me closely related to: Something like truth-seeking (“scout-mindset”), but for agency as a whole rather than just beliefs “Not playing pretend” One's different motivations working in harmony “Seriousness” (Less confidently) Some stuff about non-ego/altruism/goodness I then discuss whether we can unify these five associations under a single principle. I offer two possibilities for doing so. The first is conceptual, and takes scout-mindset-but-for-agency as the core thing. The second is empirical, and takes “not playing pretend” as the core thing. I'm not sure either is adequate. I also discuss a few of the many failure modes nearby to sincerity: self-deception, extremism, over-confidence, “the-normal-rules-don't-apply-to-me”-ness, sanctimony, over-concern with sincerity itself (both in others, and in yourself), and that most straightforward and fearsome of failures: just plain picking the wrong actions, even if you did the other stuff right. Thanks to Katja Grace, Ketan Ramakrishnan, Claire Zabel, Samira Nedungadi, Cate Hall, Bill Zito, Nick Whitaker, and Dwarkesh Patel for discussion. “Jeanne d'Arc écoutant les voix,” by Thirion, image source here. 2. Initial gestures There is a true person of no rank who is always coming and going from the portals of your face. Who is that true person of no rank? Linji Before jumping into the five associations above, I want to make a few more general gestures at the thing I have in mind when I say “sincerity,” to get us at least somewhat oriented. First, I'll note and comment on some related words. Then, I'll describe some related feelings. 2.1 Some words The word “sincerity,” here, isn't perfect. In particular, I think it over-evokes something directly social – e.g. whether you are accurately presenting your beliefs and motivations to others. Google says: “being free from pretense, hypocrisy, and deceit.” I think something about pretense is important here, and I discuss it below. But sincerity in the main sense I have in mind is compatible with lying (indeed, this is one of the dangers I discuss in the final section). Suppose, for example, that per grand thought-experimental tradition, you are living amongst the Nazis. You hate Nazism and have total, steely internal clarity about this. When you lie to your boss about your loyalty to Hitler, you are clearly being insincere in one sense – but it's not the main sense I have in mind. Also, “sincerity” tempts you to group candidates for sincerity into only two buckets: “sincere” and “insincere.” But much of life is neither actively sincere (at least in my sense), nor especially insincere – consider, for example, a casual greeting. Still, despite these issues, “sincerity” is the term I actually use. And I don't think this is an accident. So I'm going to keep using it. Another word is “earnest.” This might be closer – though it can sound a bit breathless. The idea of being “in good faith” seems related, but also too social. “Genuine” is also too social. “Authentic” is too interested in the self. I'm tempted by “good will,” but unsure (more below). Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: Refer the Cooperative AI Foundation's New COO, Receive $5000, published by Lewis Hammond on June 16, 2022 on The Effective Altruism Forum. TL;DR: The Cooperative AI Foundation (CAIF) is a new AI safety organisation and we're hiring for a Chief Operating Officer (COO). You can suggest people that you think might be a good fit for the role using this form. If you're the first to suggest the person we eventually hire, we'll send you $5000. This post was inspired by conversations with Richard Parr and Cate Hall (though I didn't consult them about the post, and they may not endorse it). Thanks to Anne le Roux and Jesse Clifton for reading a previous draft. Any mistakes are my own. Background The Cooperative AI Foundation (CAIF, pronounced “safe”) is a new organisation supporting research on the cooperative intelligence of advanced AI systems. We believe that many of the most important problems facing humanity are problems of cooperation, and that AI will be increasingly important when it comes to solving (or exacerbating) such problems. In short, we're an A(G)I safety research foundation seeking to build the nascent field of Cooperative AI. CAIF is supported by an initial endowment of $15 million and some of the leading thinkers in AI safety and AI governance, but is currently lacking operational capacity. We're expanding our team and our top priority is to hire a Chief Operating Officer – a role that will be critical for the scaling and smooth running of the foundation, both now and in the years to come. We believe that this marks an exciting opportunity to have a particularly large impact on the growth of CAIF, the field, and thus on the benefits to humanity that it prioritises. How You Can Help Do you know someone who might be a good fit for this role? Submit their name (and yours) via this form. CAIF will reach out to the people we think are promising, and if you were the first to suggest the person we eventually hire, we'll send you a referral bonus of $5000. The details required from a referral can be found by looking at the form, with the following conditions: Referrals must be made by 3 July 2022 23:59 UTC You can't refer yourself (though if you're interested in the role, please apply!) Please don't directly post names or personal details in the comments below We'll only send you the bonus if the person you suggest (and we hire) isn't someone we'd already considered The person you refer doesn't need to already be part of the EA community or be knowledgable about AI safety If you've already suggested a name to us (i.e., before this was posted), we'll still send you the bonus If you have any questions about the referral scheme, please comment below Finally, we're also looking for new ways of advertising the role. If you have suggestions, please post them in the comments below. If we use your suggested method (and we weren't already planning to), we'll send you a smaller bonus of $250. Feel free to list all your suggestions in a single comment – we'll send you a bonus for each one that we use. Why We Posted This Arguably, the most critical factor in how successful an organisation is (given sufficient funding, at least) is the quality of the people working there. This is especially true for us as a new, small organisation with ambitious plans for growth, and for a role as important as the COO. Because of this, we are strongly prioritising hiring an excellent person for this role. The problem is that finding excellent people is hard (especially for operations roles). Many excellent people that might consider moving to this role are not actively looking for one, and may not already be in our immediate network. This means that referrals are critical for finding the best person for the job, hence this post. $5000 may seem like a lot for simply sending us someone's name, b...

This is: Announcing Alvea—An EA COVID Vaccine Project, published by kyle fish on February 16, 2022 on The Effective Altruism Forum. We've had effective COVID vaccines for more than a year, but there are still countries where less than 10% of people have received a dose. Omicron has been spreading for almost three months, but pharma companies have only just started testing variant-specific shots. mRNA vaccines are highly effective, but they're hard to manufacture and nearly impossible to distribute in parts of the developing world. We won't be ready for the next variant, or the next pandemic, until these problems are solved. An ideal vaccine platform for pandemic preparedness would be fast, effective, cheap, robust, and scalable enough to reach a critical portion of the global population as soon as any new pathogen is identified. Ideas have been floating around the EA biosecurity community for years about what such a platform would look like, and what it would take to build it, but there hasn't been much direct work in the space. The most recent COVID wave convinced a few of us that it was time for that to change, so we launched Alvea to rapidly develop and deploy an Omicron-specific vaccine. In doing so, we're aiming to build a platform for responding to future COVID variants or other novel pathogens, and to massively level up the technical, operational, clinical, organizational, and logistical capabilities of the longtermist biosecurity community. We've initially structured Alvea as a three-month sprint to test the hypothesis that an exceptionally bright, dedicated group of people can quickly accomplish remarkable things in this space. In the past eight weeks, we've built a team of 35 drug developers, logistics experts, physicians, operators, and scientists to bring the project to fruition. We're supported by a network of consultants and partners with deep experience in every aspect of vaccine development and infectious disease response. Many of us are longtermist EAs who believe this project has a shot at transformative impact on biosecurity. All of us are committed to radically improving vaccine development, and are working around the clock to make this happen. Our strategy at Alvea is simple: We're building a streamlined platform for developing and deploying DNA vaccines using safe, well-validated components. DNA vaccines function similarly to mRNA vaccines, but are easier to produce and can be shipped around the world with no special storage requirements. Ultimately, we expect people to be able to easily self-administer our vaccines anywhere on the planet. Getting our vaccines into the clinic—and out to the places where they're needed—requires solving a staggering number of problems in preclinical development, manufacturing, international regulation, clinical trial design, logistics, and other areas, all at the same time. In many cases, the standard approaches to these problems are riddled with crippling inefficiencies. We're eliminating those when we can, and building from scratch when we can't. In the 60 days since our inception, we've designed twelve versions of our Omicron vaccine, responded to the emergence of the BA.2 subvariant, produced hundreds of doses of our lead candidate, run preclinical experiments in mice and sheep, kicked off scalable manufacturing processes, planned Phase I and II clinical studies, and identified potential partner countries for accelerated trials. There's an enormous amount of work still to be done, but we are well on our way. Alvea is led by Ethan Alley and Grigory Khimulya (Co-CEOs), Cate Hall, and Kyle Fish. Our team is growing rapidly, and we're particularly keen to expand in the following areas: Wet laboratory (molecular biology, in vitro and in vivo development) Clinical trial operations and logistics General company operations cGM...
Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: On infinite ethics, published by Joe Carlsmith on January 31, 2022 on The Effective Altruism Forum. (Cross-posted from Hands and Cities) And for all this, nature is never spent. Gerard Manley Hopkins Summary: Infinite ethics (i.e., ethical theory that considers infinite worlds) is important – both in theory and in practice. Infinite ethics puts serious pressure on various otherwise-plausible ethical principles (including some that underlie common arguments for “longtermism”). We know, from impossibility results, that some of these will have to go. A willingness to be “fanatical” about infinities doesn't help very much. The hard problem is figuring out how to value different infinite outcomes – and in particular, lotteries over infinite outcomes. Proposals for how to do this tend to be some combination of: silent about tons of choices; in conflict with principles like “if you can help an infinity of people and harm no one, do it”; sensitive to arbitrary and/or intuitively irrelevant things; and otherwise unattractive/horrifying. Also, the discourse thus far has focused almost entirely on countable infinities. If we have to deal with larger infinities, they seem likely to break whatever principles we settle on for the countable case. I think infinite ethics punctures the dream of a simple, bullet-biting utilitarianism. But ultimately, it's everyone's problem. My current guess is that the best thing to do from an infinite ethics perspective is to make sure that our civilization reaches a wise and technologically mature future – one of superior theoretical and empirical understanding, and superior ability to put that understanding into practice. But reflection on infinite ethics can also inform our sense of how strange such a future's ethical priorities might be. Thanks to Leopold Aschenbrenner, Amanda Askell, Paul Christiano, Katja Grace, Cate Hall, Evan Hubinger, Ketan Ramakrishnan, Carl Shulman, and Hayden Wilkinson for discussion. And thanks to Cate Hall for some poetry suggestions. I. The importance of the infinite Most of ethics ignores infinities. They're confusing. They break stuff. Hopefully, they're irrelevant. And anyway, finite ethics is hard enough. Infinite ethics is just ethics without these blinders. And ditching the blinders is good. We have to deal with infinites in practice. And they are deeply revealing in theory. Why do we have to deal with infinities in practice? Because maybe we can do infinite things. More specifically, we might be able to influence what happens to an infinite number of “value-bearing locations” – for example, people. This could happen in two ways: causal, or acausal. The causal way requires funkier science. It's not that infinite universes are funky: to the contrary, the hypothesis that we share the universe with an infinite number of observers is very live, and various people seem to think it's the leading cosmology on offer (see footnote). But current science suggests that our causal influence is made finite by things like lightspeed and entropy (though see footnote for some subtlety). So causing infinite stuff probably needs new science. Maybe we learn to make hypercomputers, or baby universes with infinite space-times. Maybe we're in a simulation housed in a more infinite-causal-influence-friendly universe. Maybe something about wormholes? You know, sci-fi stuff. The acausal way can get away with more mainstream science. But it requires funkier decision theory. Suppose you're deciding whether to make a $5000 donation that will save a life, or to spend the money on a vacation with your family. And suppose, per various respectable cosmologies, that the universe is filled with an infinite number of people very much like you, faced with choices very much like yours. If you donate, this is strong evidence that they all donate, to...

Val and Faith are joined in the studio on this gorgeous autumn morning by Cate Hall of Our Children Our Schools. We kick off the show sharing our bike moments which, this week, feature kangaroos, the You Yangs and Portarlington mussels. We take a look at some news including the upcoming Giro d'Italia, the recent Handmade Bicycle Show, an increase in cyclist deaths in the Netherlands and the commitment of Yarra City Council to the Rushall Reserve Path.Discussion turns to the work of Our Children Our Schools lobbying the state governement for commitments and funding to support active travel to public schools across Victoria. Ernest Fooks, Newlands Estate, & Melbourne modern design heritage by This Must be The Place From Viennese Avant Garde to Newlands Pizza Plus: an episode of This Must Be the Place that’s about two things: a place, and a person who was influential in making that place. The place is the Newlands Estate, an area developed by the Housing Commission in the 1940s and 1950s, in Melbourne’s north. The person is Ernest Fooks – to whom Newlands owes part of its design. Fooks was an avant garde European émigré architect and planner, and Newlands was one of his first projects after emigrating to Melbourne from the war in Austria. The Newlands estate – known for its parks, topography, mix of housing types, ubiquitous red brick, and community facilities – was the beginning of an influential 40 year career in Australia for Fooks, whose work went on to include numerous luxury modernist homes for the Jewish community, and Jewish institutional buildings. In this episode David interviews architect Catherine Townsend, a Fooks expert. And Elizabeth interviews Cate Hall, an active member of the Newlands community who has been involved in campaigns to save the Coburg Olympic Pool (in Newlands), and to regain a high school for the area. The heritage value of modernist design is part of the story, as is the politics of investment in community infrastructure.

After months of waiting, the grudge match between Cate Hall and Mike Dentale was finally there. This past Sunday, Poker Night in America played host to the heads-up battle that saw Hall beat Dentale 2-0 in a best-of-three. Hall collected $30,000 for her efforts, and we spoke to Matt Glantz about the lead up to this battle happening, the money that was at stake and how he looks back on the overall production and social media response. Aside from the battle, Tom Dawn notches up his first HendonMob result in more than three years, Ben Tollerene' scores big in Panama, and we analyze Tom Marchese's thought on whether there are too many high roller events. Lastly, the boys get into a fair bit of banter towards the end, with a very special guest crashing the party. The music on today's show's provided by Leroy Townes. Their song Hurricane Express is featured in both the intro and the outro. For more on them, check out their website at www.leroytownesband.com.
