As a big player in the recording industry, Shanti Das provided a lot of help in bringing artists like Usher, OutKast, and TLC to national audiences. Ultimately, she needed a lot of help herself and left her high profile career behind to work on her own mental health. Shanti went through a dark time in the early to mid-2010s, with the loss of her sister and the death by suicide of her best friend, and she was considering suicide. Then some things went her way, including a chance encounter with a friend at home goods store, some sage advice from Rev. Raphael Warnock, and good therapy. Today, Shanti Das runs Silence the Shame, a nonprofit advocating for mental health.Thank you to all our listeners who support the show as monthly members of Maximum Fun.Check out our I'm Glad You're Here and Depresh Mode merchandise at the brand new merch website MaxFunStore.com!Hey, remember, you're part of Depresh Mode and we want to hear what you want to hear about. On this week's episode of The Silence the Shame Podcast, our host, L.ife, sits down with two of our Silence the Shame University (STSU) members, Ava Makombe and Christian Scott, to discuss their experiences with navigating college and life as a young adult. During this conversation, both students share how their collective experiences have brought them closer to their peers and that everyone is struggling with something at any given moment. Some noteworthy “gems” from this episode: 1. People are really good at hiding their struggles, so sometimes it feels like you are the only person going through things in life. In reality, everyone is struggling with something and that is when you have to be okay with being vulnerable enough to share your story and ask people how they are really doing. 2. It is okay is your journey looks different from your parents. You and your parents have to come to an understanding that just because I am navigating life differently than you did, doesn't mean I am doing it wrong. 3. A safe space means finding the right support system for you. The Silence the Shame University (STSU) program is a mental health college ambassador initiative designed to provide students with access to behavioral health resources and foster social connections within campus and community settings to enhance academic success. Interested in becoming a member? Visit our website bit.ly/STSUwebpage If you or you know someone experiencing a mental health crisis, please dial 9-8-8 to connect with the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline or text “SILENCE” to 707070. She is the founder of “Crazy Like a Fox Tour” and founder of “Stronger Than My Struggles”, and today we are talking about her incredible story!Being that it is mental health awareness month, we wanted to discuss the concerns we have about the challenges individuals may struggle with and how they can find help with their mental disorders. Currently over 450 million People worldwide are suffering from mental illness, yet nearly two thirds of the people with a known mental illness never seek treatment. We must kill the silence in our communities and stop the stigma among women! This is a huge subject matter in the community of people across the world. Especially black women. We often suffer in silence and don’t seek help. Often times, we as black women, go so hard and we carry this torch around that we have to be strong, independent women 24 hrs a day! Act like superwomen, And then to top it off, still remain sane! That’s an incredible amount of weight and pressure for one to carry! Melony opens up about her story and introduces other ladies who are featured on the show as well, who opens up about their painful past they overcame. Music veteran, Hip Hop Professional creator, and founder of the "Silence the Shame" movement, Shanti Das, joins The Brink of Midnight Podcast with John Brenkus.   Shanti Das is a name popular with some of the most successful urban artists including Outkast, Usher, Toni Braxton, TLC, Jermaine Dupri, Prince, and L.A. Reid, among many others. She climbed her way to the top of music marketing working at La Face Records, Capitol Records, Arista, Columbia, and finally at Universal as their Executive Vice President of Marketing. She had it all going on, beloved by countless artists and music professionals, but no one really knew of the periods of darkness and depression Shanti would experience with her unprocessed feelings from her father's suicide. One particular dark moment, after contemplating ending her life, she reached out for help and began the process of true healing and now she's made it her mission to help others battling the same darkness.    Out of her most difficult time, the seed was planted for what would become her "Silence the Shame" movement for mental wellness and advocacy. She is peeling back the layers of shame and stigma surrounding mental health issues, touring the country, helping students, collaborating on research with Emory University, and sparking dialogue with the help of friends from the music industry including: Nick Cannon, Bell Biv DeVoe (BBD), Estelle, Andra Day, Will Packer, Stephanie Mills, Takeo Spikes, Chloe X Halle, Shanice, Flex Alexander, Terri J Vaughn, Nicci Gilbert Daniels and Ed Lover. Shanti, like the meaning of her name, is bringing peace to the masses and helping save lives. In this poignant conversation, Shanti bravely tells her story, educates, and provides tools for anyone in need. She believes "peace is the new success" and that when we can all help each other out, we all win!   For full show notes, visit: www.brinkofmidnight.com | Contact: info@brinkofmidnight.com | Connect on Socials: @brinkofmidnight (twitter, instagram, Facebook) and @johnbrenkus_

This is both a fun and important episode - enjoy and share! About Shanti Das: Shanti Das is an accomplished entertainment executive, consultant, entrepreneur, mentor, author, and Philanthropist. It is no secret that addressing mental health is often a taboo subject, and for someone like Dr.Siri to break down the barriers with Hip-Hop and Pop artists is a revolutionary act. Giving the agency to individuals to address the strong holds over their minds is to give freedom to the potential of their future. We have to advocate the coolness of releasing our mental disparities in a healthy and positive environment that will lead to better life practices. Silence The Shame was honored to have Dr.Siri divulge his knowledge and let us in on what it’s like to dig into the minds and lives of some of our favorite entertainers.
