Is Satan REALLY A Fallen Angel? Part 3 (Episode 239) – We continue our conversation on the origin of Satan by looking again at Isaiah 14. Joined by Jesse Dunn, we discuss whether or not the name "Lucifer" (Isaiah 14:12) is actually a reference to Satan, or simply a nickname for the King of Babylon.

Netflix's live-action adaptation of Neil Gaiman's groundbreaking comic book series, "The Sandman," continues to captivate audiences with its rich storytelling and stellar cast. The series premiered on August 5, 2022, and quickly garnered critical acclaim, including a 9/10 review from IGN, which praised it as an adaptation fans "could only conjure up in their deepest of sleeps." Production for Season 2 resumed in November, and Netflix has now announced the actors who will portray Dream's previously unseen siblings. Esme Creed-Miles, known for her role in "The Doll Factory," will play Delirium. Adrian Lester, star of "Primary Colors," will take on the role of Destiny. Barry Sloane, familiar to many from "Revenge" and the first-person shooter franchise "Call of Duty," will embody The Prodigal, also known as Destruction. These new cast members join returning stars Tom Sturridge as Dream, Kirby as Death, Mason Alexander Park as Desire, and Donna Preston as Despair. Other familiar faces returning for Season 2 include Patton Oswalt as Matthew the Raven, Vivienne Acheampong as Lucienne, Gwendoline Christie as Lucifer Morningstar, Jenna Coleman as Johanna Constantine, and many more. Barry Sloane's casting is particularly notable for fans of "Call of Duty," where he voices the beloved character Captain Price. His transition from video games to a major role in "The Sandman" highlights the diverse talent of the cast. While Season 2 does not yet have a release date, Netflix's recent announcements and teasers suggest that fans might not have to wait too long for the new season. With the cast complete, the anticipation for the next chapter in "The Sandman" saga is higher than ever.
Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: The Byronic Hero Always Loses, published by Cole Wyeth on February 23, 2024 on LessWrong. Why do we root for the antiheroes? Walter White, Light Yagami, Lucifer Morningstar, Doctor Frankenstein... It seems to be natural to root for the bad guys, and perhaps even more natural for rationalists. "I must confess I have always had some sympathy with villains. Heroism makes fine entertainment but sooner or later someone has to get things done." - Bayaz, Joe Abercrombie's First Law Trilogy. I think this is the reason, at least for me. Villains (particularly the most beloved villains) are agentic. They know what they want and they attempt to obtain it through their own actions. Sometimes those actions are even reasonable. This is notable because it's usually untrue of heroes. Heroes tend to be called to adventure, accepting a goal thrust upon them by circumstances or a bearded stranger or both. Then they pursue it, but often alongside a handful of other eclectic goals which cause internal conflict when they can't all be satisfied (getting distracted rescuing some civilians when the fate of the world is at stake). There's also something fairly un-agentic about following an absolute "honor" code, which is much more common among heroes than villains. Finally, heroes have teams of friends instead of minions, and are often forced to go out of their way to help their friends. A hero's friendships might even change his terminal values! So, why do we often find villains so fascinating? I think it's the same reason that rationalists don't run the world. Being highly agentic just isn't easy in real life, because it's inherently individualistic. Individuals tend to be outcompeted by large organizations. Large organizations are approximately agentic, but the people making up a large organization don't necessarily have to be. In fact, it might be better if they aren't! The military seems to optimize much more strongly for loyalty and discipline than agency - in fact, an army of agents with diverse goals seems tricky to control, since most will instrumentally value their own survival (though an army of agents with one cohesive goal may be even more formidable). In industry, principles of comparative advantage can imply that it is best for each employee to become highly specialized, which seems opposed to developing their agency. A more capable agent might generalize (building the type of skill set that a startup found might need, including "executive nature" as in Competent Elites). Though agentic employees can create a lot of value, I think it is typically more cost effective to create additional cogs in the machine than it is to increase agency. I think this is also why politicians are not very clever (epistemic status: I don't know any politicians). The things we value in a leader include costly trustworthiness signals (see https://www.elephantinthebrain.com/). In fact, the risk of an actively corrupt leader may be great enough that some would prefer a candidate with actively irrational beliefs (say, expecting moral judgement in the afterlife). I would almost go so far as to say that the idea of becoming a Machiavellian scheming mastermind and changing the world (for better or worse) through sheer cleverness is a childish fantasy. Maybe that's not a bad thing; children might be naive, but at least they aren't bitter. Perhaps it's just my American upbringing, but I think I want to live in a world where agents can get what they want, even with the world set against them, if only they are clever and persistent enough. So when I read about another despicable villain sacrificing it all and throwing the natural order out of balance in the name of cursed immortality or to avenge their family or to grasp untold riches, I can't help but root for them a little. Tread Perilously's next Patreon request leads to infernal Los Angeles for an early episode of Lucifer called "Sweet Kicks." Despite the possibility of becoming mortal, Lucifer Morningstar uses his connection to a new case as a means of ingratiating himself with the LAPD and becoming Decker's partner. The case: a woman trampled to death after shots were fired at celebrity shoe designer Benny Choi's latest fashion show (where Lucifer was a guest). Suspects include members of the Latin Kings and Asian Boys street gangs, but Decker's gut and Lucifer's ability to suss out desires make both options less likely. Is it really Choi's old pal, recently released from prison for a crime Choi committed, or someone even closer to the shoemaker? Justin cannot get over the fact the literal Devil is a character on this show. Erik expresses his love for the Lucifer comic book and his reservations about turning it into a Fox cop show. He also confuses Tim Matheson and Timothy Hutton. Justin finds himself tickled by the program's revised premise. The "unreasonably sexy" quotient also helps. Decker gets diagnosed with Skyler White Syndrome. Erik's knowledge about various Devils slips out. Original Tommy's once again get thrown under the bus. Hilarious generic gang names lead to a wild discussion in the weeds and memories of The Warriors video game emerge.

We reach the end of the season as we discuss The Sandman Chapter 10 "Lost Hearts" in spoiler filled detail. We will be back covering the 11th special episode on our Sandman next podcast. The Sandman Chapter 10 "Lost Hearts" Details Episode Directed by Louise Hooper Teleplay for this episode written by Jay Franklin Staff Writers Catherine Smyth-McMullen and Vanessa Benton The Corinthian warns Rose that Morpheus plans to kill her to protect the boundaries between the Dreaming and the waking world and manages to persuade her and Jed to stay in his Hotel room as he heads down for his keynote speech at the Cereal Convention. But as the Corinthian places the collectors into his collective dream he is interrupted by Morpheus, but the Corinthian shows Morpheus that Rose's increasing power and the weakening of the boundaries of the Dreaming enables him to defend himself against his creator. In the meantime Rose and Jed have fallen asleep which allows Morpheus to inform Rose of the great danger she poses to the waking world, prompting her to temporarily restore the Dreaming and allowing Morpheus to unmake the Corinthian. Morpheus punishes the convention attendees with clarity about their crimes, allowing Rose and Jed to leave the Hotel unharmed. Until she falls asleep again. That night, Rose confronts Morpheus in the Dreaming and is ready to sacrifice herself to save her friends and brother, but they are joined by Unity Kincade and Lucienne. They inform Morpheus it was Unity who should have been this era's Vortex and Unity convinces Rose to transfer the Vortex into her, allowing her to sacrifice her life for Rose's. Morpheus realises that Unity's golden eyed man who impregnated her while she was with sleeping sickness was Desire, who planned to pass the Vortex to her descendant in an attempt to have Morpheus spill family blood. Morpheus confronts Desire, warning them and Despair against further scheming. Back in the dream realm Morpheus remakes Gault as a good dream and endeavours to act as a more benevolent ruler of the Dreaming, leaving Lucienne to take care of his affairs while he creates. In the waking world, Lyta with her newborn son, moves with Rose, Jed, and Hal back to New Jersey. In Hell, after being reproached by Lord Azazel and the Dukes of Hell, Lucifer Morningstar ponders a new plan that will really anger God and wreak revenge upon Lord Morpheus. This episode is all about one of those "BEAK GLASS IN CASE OF EMERGENCY" meditations (Stoic or otherwise). I came up with this gem of a meditation a few years back while I happened to be binging on Epictetus et al...and while watching the second season of the awesome TV series Lucifer. I shamelessly usurped a catchphrase from who else but the most stoic of all angels ... Lucifer Morningstar. How does one set out to character Lucifer Morningstar, the Lightbringer, First of the Fallen, The Adversary, Him called the Devil? It's up to you, apparently.Mini-sode #3 is a comparative discussion about the character of Lucifer in the DC universe, between Monte and Melissa (who have seen the Lucifer show) and Veronica (who read Lucifer's appearances in Sandman and has delved into the Lucifer comic). Sometimes it's fun to just enlighten (heh heh heh) one another, you know?Next week, we will be reading Black Widow (2014) #1-6: The Finely Woven Thread. We invite you to read along with us.Veronica's theme this season is Redemption (for characters we didn't like before). Monte's theme is Fem Fatales. We finally appeared on The Colored Pages Book Club, to discuss the adorable Bingo Love! Also check out Monte, Veronica, and Melissa's separate guest appearances on Waiting on the Trade! Monte, Veronica, and Melissa also each appeared on Watching Netflix Without You! Based on the DC Comics character, the series revolves around the story of Lucifer Morningstar played by Tom Ellis, the DC Universe's version of the Devil, who is exiled from Hell for being a rebel. He runs his own nightclub named Lux and also works at Los Angeles Police Department as a consultant. Here are a few lesser-known trivia about the series that you probably didn't know. 1. Throughout season 3, Lucifer's shots were framed so that the background elements formed the shape of wings behind him.2. The name of every episode in the series is named-dropped by Lucifer, and one character in every episode says the word ‘hell'.3. The meaning of Lucifer in Latin is ‘light bringer' and incidentally the club which is run by him is named Lux. As we know, Lux is the SI unit of luminance.4. The character Ella Lopez makes many references to her ‘spidey senses'. It is a reference to Spiderman from the Marvel Universe, whereas Lucifer is from the DC Universe. If you haven't watched this series yet then do so exclusively on Netflix. Well, that's some lesser-known trivia about the hit series ‘Lucifer'. I shall be back again tomorrow with a brand new episode until then it's your host Nikhil out of here.

In this episode of the Geektown Behind The Scenes podcast, I'm chatting with Alex Hajdu, the brilliant production designer behind 'Lucifer', as well as the upcoming return of the fan-favourite franchise, 'CSI: Vegas'.As I'm sure most of you are aware, 'Lucifer' follows Lucifer Morningstar, who decides he's had enough of being the dutiful servant in Hell and moves to spend some time on Earth to better understand humanity. He settles in Los Angeles - the City of Angels, where he meets Chloe, an LAPD detective, and joins her in solving crimes.'CSI: Vegas' returns us to the smash hit CSI franchise, and to Las Vegas, albeit with a new team running the Vegas Crime Lab. However, when an existential threat emerges which could bring down the whole facility, the brilliant team of forensic investigators must welcome back old friends and deploy new techniques to preserve and serve justice in Sin City.Alex has been working in the tv industry pretty much his entire adult life. In the interview, we discuss how he went from carrying boxes for a production company to working on one of the highest-profile procedurals on tv. We go through his work on 'Lucifer', from recreating the initial standing sets when production moved to LA, to complex Season 6 sets such as the Gaudi-inspired God's throne room and the Magic Castle Theater. We also cover his work on designing a new crime lab for the hugely anticipated return of CSI to our screens.'Lucifer' can be found on Netflix around the world, whilst 'CSI: Vegas' is set to launch on CBS on October 6th in the USA. We don't yet have a UK premiere for the series, but if you click here, you can use our Never Miss feature to be notified when it does land on this side of the Atlantic.Support this show http://supporter.acast.com/geektown. Anna helps me see the darkness and the light in the TV Show, Lucifer! The series focuses on Lucifer Morningstar played by Tom Ellis. He is a handsome and powerful angel who was cast out of Heaven for his rebellion. As the Devil, Lucifer tires of the millennia he's spent being the Lord of Hell, punishing people. BUT also it's a police procedural show! Nah, although Lucifer is often depicted as the antipode of God, nggak semua orang ternyata beranggapan begitu. Justru, si Devil ini terkadang jadi simbol perlawanan sosial sampai politis lho. Lalu, gimana sih sebenernya the fallen angel ini malah jadi simbol perlawanan? Like, how mystical really is the Devil?

In this episode Mark talks about one of his favourite TV series: "Lucifer" - which is an American urban fantasy television series developed by Tom Kapinos based on the DC Comics character created by Neil Gaiman, Sam Keith, and Mike Dringenberg taken from the comic book series The Sandman and who was also the main protagonist of a spin-off comic book series published by DC Comics' Vertigo imprint. The series revolves around the story of Lucifer Morningstar (played by Tom Ellis) the Devil, who was condemned to rule hell for all eternity after attempting to stage a rebellion in Heaven... until he decides to take a vacation in Los Angeles where he runs his own nightclub named 'LUX' as well as becoming a consultant for the LAPD. The series also focuses of Lucifer's connection and his relationship with Dectective Chloe Decker (played by Lauren German) and the mystery of why she is not susceptible to his gift of drawing out peoples' hidden desires. The series also stars Kevin Alejandro as Detective Daniel "Dan" Espinoza, D.B. Woodside as Amenadiel, Lesley-Ann Brandt as Mazikeen, and Rachael Harris as Dr. Linda Martin. The series first three series premiered on Fox, until it was cancelled - but now all three seasons can now be streamed on Amazon Prime in the UK, and all the seasons afterwards can be streamed on Netflix worldwide. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/markthepoet/message

In the beginning there was only darkness. Things changed and the emptiness was filled. Many worlds were born. There were countless variations and endless possibilities. On these Earth's protectors began to rise. People who would look after all those citizens taking steps to fulfill their various destinies. Thus the age of heroes was born. On Earth 38 the DEO is in a state of frantic action. Brainy says there are signs of a worldwide earthquake. J’onn begins to brief the team about what the Monitor has told him. There is a wave of antimatter headed their way. This wave carries with it the power to wipe out entire Earths from existence. The next cosmic location to be effected is Argo City. Kara must find a way to warn Clark. J’onn begins to head up an evacuation plan. They are going to need a portal. As director of the DEO Alex must make hard choices. She must go apologize and put her trust in Lena Luthor to save the innocent residents of Earth 38. Like his Father before him little Johnathan Kent has to be placed in an escape pod bound for Earth 1. At the same moment Argo is consumed Harbinger grabs his parents. They are added to the group she has assembled for the Monitor. The Earth shakes and a giant tower emerges. These structures have been placed on key Earth’s. Kara and Clark work on getting the towers functioning. Oliver gathers a team to take an offensive stand. Lois, Sara and Brainy set out to find where baby Jonathan has landed. Their quest for the tiny Kryptonian takes them to Earth 16 in 2046. Sara comes face to face with a remorseful Oliver. He apologizes saying he should have never taken her on the Gambit. Sara assures Ollie that getting on that boat was not a bad thing. It led her to where she is now. It was her destiny. The team retrieves Jonathan and returns to Earth 38. Upon their return the remaining heroes are facing off against a hoard of shadow demons. The Monitor said the battle is lost and resources must be conserved. Oliver refuses to give up until more people are evacuated. He had just told Mia that she must carry on and start telling her own stories. Unfortunately it looks like Oliver himself will not be around to witness it. He has given his life for Barry and Kara and the innocent souls of earth 38. There is no time to grieve with the antimatter wave taking Earth after Earth without discretion. They must find the seven Paragons and then they can win the fight. In a lucky twist of fate some of the elite heroes were already among them. Sara Lance is the Paragon of Destiny. Barry Allen is the Paragon of Love. Martian Manhunter is the Paragon of Honor. Kara Danvers is the Paragon of Hope The quest is on to find three more. Kara and Kate follow a lead to Earth 99 Gotham. There they find a Bruce Wayne that is broken in both body and spirit. The Kate on his Earth has died. He and Superman got in a fight that left the Man of Steel dead and Bruce crippled. Needless to say Bruce is not happy with Kate’s Kryptonian friend. As he is dying he gives Kate a Kryptonite medallion for safe keeping. Batwoman may think her mission is a failure. However upon her return Ray Palmer’s Paragon detector indicates that Kate Kane is the Paragon of Courage. Lois and Clark are Earth hopping. They are trying to warn all the Supermen of the Multiverse. You see Lex Luthor is on a quest to kill them all. Among the Men of Steel dwells one who has faced more than the rest and still remains a Hero. A rouge villain took everything from this Kal El in one explosive move. Having survived this experience has made this Superman the Paragon of Truth. Barry Allen can not accept Oliver’s fate. He was prepared to die in Crisis but not for his friend to die for him. Mia and Barry go on a mission to find a Lazarus pit that has yet to be destroyed by Nyssa. Sara is very uncomfortable with this plan. She knows all too well the consequences of being submerged in that magical water. In the end she helps them because she misses Ollie too. They succeed in reviving his body. Oliver’s soul however is a different story. Kara is really struggling with what has happened to her Mother and Earth. She comes very close to using the Book of Destiny despite the risks that would entail. The Monitor says to use that type of power to change an outcome could cause insanity. Kara believes her role as the Paragon of Hope means she should remain hopeful. That she can fix this immensely sad turn of events. Thank goodness Kate is there to talk her out of it. Supergirl doesn’t push mystical power past the point of no return. Living under the crimson sky of death can be pretty stressful. All you want to do is hold your loved ones close until the danger subsides. This is all Ryan Choi wants to do when Iris, Ralph and Ray come to see him. Iris is very persuasive in her argument that humans also have important roles to play in the fight to save the Earth. They need Ryan on their side. He is the Paragon of Humanity. If there is any hope to save Oliver’s humanity they must save his soul. It is time for Constantine to make a deal with the devil. On earth 666 Constantine looks to his old friend Lucifer Morningstar. He gives them a round trip ticket to purgatory. As long as they can find Oliver’s soul before the picture on the ticket fades away. Cisco has found the source of the antimatter wave. The monitor restores Cisco’s vibe power and he and Barry race over to the source to try to stop the destruction. When they arrive they find Flash from Earth 90 trapped on the cosmic treadmill that is powering this disaster. Vibe is able to breech Earth 90 Flash off the treadmill but the Anti- Monitor has programmed in a fail safe. All the remaining Earths will disintegrate at once if The Flash stops running. This is the moment that Barry has prepared for. This is the mission he has been running toward. The monitor said The Flash must die in Crisis. He never said which one. Before Barry can climb upon the cosmic treadmill Earth 90 Flash temporarily steals his speed. Earth 90 Flash has led a full life and would like to give Barry the opportunity to live his. Earth 90 Flash runs and runs until he is reduced to molecules. The only Earth left in the multiverse is saved. Oliver will not return with his daughter and best friend. Oliver feels he has to become something else. In purgatory Oliver meets The Spector. He feels taking on this identity is his latest mission. Back on the Waverider the Anti-Monitor has infiltrated the Paragons. He takes over Harbinger and fights his alter ego the Monitor. In the last moments of the Multiverse our Paragons are transported to the Vanishing Point. A place that exists outside of time and space. All is lost. There are no more earths. They are once again in darkness as it was in the beginning. Can the Paragons do anything to put right what has been destroyed? What will Oliver Queen contribute as The Spector? The end of the world does stop one of the most intelligent mad men in the Universe. Lex Luthor has changed his destiny putting himself in the place of the Paragon of Truth. Can our heroes restore the Multiverse? Will there be many Earths or just one? Will the cosmos soon be full again or an empty black void as far as the eye can see? Can they do it all with one of the world’s most cunning villains in their company? We will have to wait until January 14th at 8/7c on the CW. Until then this your Green Butterfly always with her eyes to the skies!

Robert Stanley is a friend of the show, an author, radio host and researcher who has had a real life encounter with Lucifer Morningstar himself. He draws a big comparison between Enki from ancient Sumner and Lucifer. It turns out Lucifer is likely many different characters from history and mythology. Daniel begins by asking Robert […]
We talk with Ildy Modrovich, co-showrunner, writer, and executive producer of Lucifer, which is about to wrap it’s second season on Fox. The show is based on the Vertigo comics series which spun out of the pages of Sandman. The TV series follows Lucifer Morningstar, the literal devil, having abandoned hell to live in modern day Los Angeles to run a bar called Lux. The show departs from the source material’s high fantasy mythology by grounding it as a police procedural, with the fallen angel assisting LA detectives - in his own unique, self-absorbed way - while combating supernatural conflicts and balancing a dysfunctional family of earth-bound celestials. We talk with Ildy about the themes, production process, and character evolutions on the show. Fans should enjoy our discussion of its humor, fantastic cast, and how much fun it is to create. We also discuss Ildy’s career path from musician to writer to producer.
Lucifer Morningstar aka The Morningstar aka The Fallen One aka Beelzebub aka the Prince of Darkness aka Owner of Lux aka Iblis aka the Serpent aka the Silver-tongued one aka Lucy has a bit of an attention problem.
