Send us a textWe explore ambivalent attachment, where caregivers' anxiety and overprotection create uncertainty in children, preventing them from developing confidence and decision-making skills. This parenting approach, often seen in helicopter parenting, stems from good intentions but teaches children the world is unsafe.• Ambivalent attachment develops when caregivers are anxious, overwhelmed or uncertain in their responses to children• Children with this attachment style appear visibly anxious and often look to caregivers before making decisions• These children develop internal beliefs that they are unsure, others are confusing, and the world is unsafe• Helicopter parenting prevents children from experiencing necessary stressors that build resilience• Children need "predictable, moderate, and controllable" stress to develop confidence• Creating opportunities for safe failure helps children learn to navigate challenges independently• Parents should focus on developing self-awareness about their own anxiety triggers• Ambivalently attached children may be more vulnerable to peer pressure and substance abuse as adolescents• Adults with ambivalent attachment often struggle with decision-making and may seek controlling relationships• Healing involves consistent caregiving, creating opportunities for building confidence, and gradually increasing stress toleranceJoin us next week as we discuss disorganized attachment.Contact:podcasts@calfarley.org To Donate: https://secure.calfarley.org/site/Donation2?3358.donation=form1&df_id=3358&mfc_pref=TTo Apply:https://apply.workable.com/cal-farleys-boys-ranch/j/25E1226091/For More Information about Cal Farley's Boys Ranch:https://www.calfarley.org/Music:"Shine" -NewsboysCCS License No. 9402

Join host Jo Reed and AudioFile's Kendra Winchester as they dive into narratives of two unique teens—Viv, who is fighting against fracking in her town, and Dex, who struggles with poverty and hopes his mother's new job with the pipeline will provide security. André Santana's calm delivery of Dex's dialogue presents a counterpoint to Viv's emotionality, narrated by Mia Hutchinson-Shaw. Both narrators build the interior and exterior tensions as the teens grow to care for each other. Read our review of the audiobook at our website Published by Hachette Audio. Finding themselves at an exclusive, elevated club aptly called the Nest, the reunited friends take time for a night of letting loose a little bit. There's a little something for everyone here. Dancing for Jhori, drinks for Nehemiah, eavesdropping for Smalren, and plenty to keep the attention of their current companions. After everything they've endured, it's nice to just let go. And nothing could possibly go wrong at an upscale establishment high in the sky, right? A patron is affronted, the stars are read, and the dance floor sees some action. Join us and Nehemiah, Smalren and Jhori have a night on the town. Every protest sign you've ever waved, every petty theft you bragged about, every mask you wore — it's all been scraped up, timestamped, and tucked in a file with your name on it. Doesn't matter if you called it civil disobedience, harmless rebellion, or just youthful stupidity. You were noticed. America's surveillance state isn't a guard tower and barbed wire; it's a mansion rigged like Willy Wonka's factory — a candy-colored panopticon of bait and hidden cameras. The real prize isn't catching you red-handed — it's testing who you become when you think you're invisible.Broken Windows policing didn't die with Giuliani's New York; it metastasized. The idea that minor crimes signal bigger rot? Now it justifies a dragnet that hunts memes, phone pings, and moral slip-ups. Every unlocked door, every lootable Target, every liquor cabinet cracked during a riot — bait. See who steals, who doxxes, who brags. The walls watch. The house takes notes. And this mansion is wired to your head. A real fence is expensive; an invisible one is cheap. Pavlov knew this: one zap and the dog learns the line. America's shock collar is the same. Every Ring doorbell, Nest cam, loyalty card, smart TV mic — all hoovering up your data, freezing your worst impulses for the day you matter. That drunken riot you livestreamed at 21? It sits cold-stored, ready for quantum computing to revive it when you run for office, land a government job, or just get too loud. It's not pre-crime — it's permanent crime insurance. It's easy to tell yourself this is just China's social credit system — but the American version is more diabolical. Here, every tribe wants the fence. The Right wants it to crush anarchists and migrants. The Left wants it to snare January 6th rioters and trolls. Nobody wants to cut the wires — they just want the shock button. That's how you get 340 million people to stay in line with four million cops, soldiers, and spooks: you make everyone their own warden, a hive of unpaid informants. It's old too. Hoover's FBI had the prototype: COINTELPRO, secret files to blackmail MLK, Fred Hampton, the Panthers. The Stanford Prison Experiment, MKUltra, mind control ops — all real. That architecture didn't vanish; it scaled up. Now it's Palantir, Amazon Rekognition, “predictive policing,” a cold case lab waiting for your soul to weigh heavy enough to tip Ma'at's scale.Leaks didn't kill it. Snowden, Assange, the WikiLeaks cables — they didn't shut the machine down. They made you respect the fence. They showed you the collar. They broadcast the dragnet because a monster you can see is more effective than one you can't. You start triple-checking your words, your DMs, your gait in an airport. You become your own surveillance op. They can't post soldiers on every block — so they build the perimeter in your skull. This is the real genius: you're not the hero in a rebellion. You're a lab rat in an open-air experiment. Every door you test, every moral slip you rationalize, every shiny bait you grab — logged. And when the moment comes, the shock collar doesn't have to bark. It just zaps you back inside the fence you forgot was there.America's not a prison camp; it's a behavioral panopticon humming quietly under your feet, its files never closing. You tell yourself you're free because you can rant online. But the moment you act like you believe it — the file opens, the buzz hits, and you remember: the fence was always on.
General Cornwallis will comment, it seems the war between the English and the continentals is but a side show to the partisan war raging within the southern colonies

On this episode of The Karen Kenney Show, I'm discussing a topic that's been kinda' burning a hole in my brain: Why do people feel the need to be such jerks online? I was already planning on talking about this - but after hearing about a friend's experience receiving not-so-nice feedback from strangers after her free webinar, I was doubly committed!I read two specific email examples from people who went out of their way to share their unsolicited opinion about my friend's presentation. The kicker? These were for a FREE online event that they didn't have to pay for and that they could have simply stopped watching at any time. This episode is a passionate plea for a little more kindness in a world that seems to reward snark, sarcasm, and criticism. I'm challenging all of us to hit pause before hitting "send" and to ask ourselves the three ancient gate questions: This thing that I'm about to say/type/send…Is it true? Is it kind? Is it necessary? We've somehow normalized being cruel, especially online, and it's time we remember that real strength isn't in cutting others down - it's in lifting them up!My top messages here? Why be an asshole, when you can just be quiet. You always have a choice. Choose kindness. Use your words to make people feel seen, supported, and valued. In a world that's increasingly divided and violent, we need compassion more than ever.Let's be part of the "Kind Kids Club" and consciously do our best to leave people, animals, places, and spaces better than we found them. ❤️ KK'S KEY TAKEAWAYS:• Sharing your work with the world takes courage and vulnerability.• Before sending a critical message, ask yourself: Is it true? Is it kind? Is it necessary?• Social media has convinced everyone they should share their opinion, but not every thought needs to be voiced.• Kindness is a strength, it doesn't take much to be mean.• Your words have power - they can build people up or tear them down. Choose wisely.• Just because you can comment doesn't mean you should.• Sometimes staying quiet is the most compassionate action.• Personal responsibility matters: Consider how your words might impact someone who could be struggling or vulnerable.• The current cultural climate often rewards being provocative or cruel over being kind, but you can choose to be different.• Creativity and putting yourself out there is challenging enough without added negativity from others.• Always ask yourself: "Would I want someone to speak to me this way?" If not, don't say it to someone else.BIO:Spiritual mentor and writer Karen Kenney uses humor and dynamic storytelling to bring a down-to-earth, no-BS perspective to self-development.Bringing together tools that coach the conscious and unconscious mind, Karen helps clients deepen their connections with Self, and discover their unique understandings of spirituality. When your child needs special education support, the journey can feel frustrating, disorienting, and lonely. With long waitlists and limited access to the right resources, a system meant to serve too often overwhelms rather than empowers families looking for help. In this episode, NYC First Deputy Mayor Randy Mastro andDeputy Chancellor Christina Foti join host Tracey Spencer Walsh for a powerful conversation on inclusion, equity, and what real progress in special education looks like for NYC families. With personal stories and professional insight, these leaders share real solutions and a bold vision guiding the city's push toward inclusive, accessible education for all students. What You'll Take Away from This Episode:

In this episode, I'm joined by negotiation expert Alex Carter and executive presence coach Anne Marie Nest for a conversation about what it really means to lead with presence. We talk about the myths around confidence, how to interrupt negative self-talk, and why executive presence isn't something you're born with—it's something you can learn and practice. Alex and Anne-Marie share personal stories, practical tips, and simple strategies you can start using right away. If you want to show up with more clarity, confidence, and command in your business, this episode is for you.
In this week's episode of Friends Talking Nerdy, Professor Aubrey and Tim the Nerd crack open the covers of some of their favorite books that eventually made their way to the big screen. While the hosts inevitably touch on the films these books inspired, the heart of the conversation stays grounded in the written word—the themes, characters, and emotional impact these stories had when first encountered in print.Professor Aubrey and Tim the Nerd share personal reflections on what made each book resonate with them, offering insights on how the source material often dives deeper than its cinematic counterpart. From the cold elegance of Casino Royale by Ian Fleming to the raw introspection of Jarhead by Anthony Swofford, and from the spy thriller intensity of The Bourne Identity by Robert Ludlum to the timeless satire and romance of Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen, this episode covers a broad literary landscape. The conversation also spans cult classics and controversial adaptations, such as Nothing Lasts Forever by Roderick Thorpe—the basis for Die Hard—and American Hero by Larry Beinhart, the novel that inspired Wag the Dog. Add to that the gothic allure of Interview With the Vampire by Anne Rice, the conspiracy-laced mystery of The Da Vinci Code by Dan Brown, the psychological depth of One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest by Ken Kesey, and the sweeping Southern drama of Gone With The Wind by Margaret Mitchell, and you have an episode that's both literary and cinematic in scope.Whether you're a bookworm, a film buff, or both, Episode 416 invites you to revisit the books that first sparked your imagination—and perhaps gave you a new way to look at their movie counterparts.Tune in, turn the page, and talk nerdy with us.As always, we wish to thank Christopher Lazarek for his wonderful theme song.
