In this episode of From the Crows' Nest, host Ken Miller is joined by returning guest Duncan McCrory from the Freeman Aerospace Institute at King's College London to unpack concerns of a Chinese escalation in the Pacific to reunification with Taiwan — and what this move could mean for the United States and alliances around the world.McCrory says that defense experts have focused on 2027, known as the “Davidson Window,” following reports from the U.S. Intelligence Community that Chinese President Xi Jinping has ordered its military to be ready to invade Taiwan in 2027. The People's Liberation Army (PLA) is the largest military force in the world with 2 million active-duty soldiers. McCrory says a successful invasion of Taiwan from China could weaken alliances and have devastating economic impacts on the United States… but a miscalculated intervention could introduce direct conflict with one of the biggest superpowers in the world. To learn more about today's topics or to stay updated on EMSO and EW developments, visit our homepage. We also invite you to share your thoughts, questions, or suggestions for future episodes by emailing host Ken Miller at host@fromthecrowsnest.org.

It's simultaneously wonderful and worrying to launch a kid. The most common denominator question is a version of this: Are they going to be ok when they leave us? We hope – and wonder – if we've taught them enough to be out in the world. Christina Geist spent her oldest child's senior year of high school compiling those life lessons in Before You Fly Away. Her musings are as heartfelt as they are practical, whether you have a child who is about to fly the nest, one who flew away long ago, or one so young you can hardly imagine that stage of life. Prefontaine shares lessons from the 2008 crash, explains why coaching matters, and offers practical pathways for people looking to break free from traditional financial systems and build sustainable wealth. 3 Key Takeaways: Creative real estate is a discipline, not a tactic. Chris outlines a three-step approach to real estate success. Coaching is about accountability, not just motivation. Real transformation comes from daily tracking, public accountability, and consistent feedback—not from a one-time seminar. Cash flow > Nest eggs. Chris and Jim challenge conventional retirement thinking, offering examples of individuals who liquidated 401(k)s and replaced stagnant savings with income-producing assets. ✅ How to avoid creating performance identities in your kids ✅ Why "consistency compounds" in parenting just like investing ✅ The 4 legs of legacy (hint: wealth is only 25% of it!)  ✅ How to have intentional family vision meetings that actually work   LEAVE DADAWESOME A VOICEMAIL: speakpipe.com/DadAwesome   FULL SHOW NOTES: https://www.dadawesome.org/blog/394   SUMMARY What if the words you speak as a dad today become your child's inner voice for decades to come? In this episode, Lance Welch—dad of three adult entrepreneurs and grandfather of two—shares how he moved from being a "dictator dad" to a "friend dad" while building intentional multi-generational impact. You'll discover the four stages of fatherhood, why creating performance identities in our kids backfires, and how to transition from survival-mode parenting to legacy-building leadership in your family. Takeaways: There are four distinct stages of fatherhood: dictator dad (young kids), consultant dad (asking "what would you do?"), advocate dad (letting them make mistakes), and friend dad (adult relationships) Consistency compounds—whether in finances or fatherhood, small intentional actions over time create massive impact Avoid creating performance identities in your children by celebrating the "gain" (progress made) rather than focusing on the "gap" (falling short of perfection) Choose your inconvenience: invest time teaching skills on the front end rather than being constantly inconvenienced doing everything yourself The four legs of legacy are vision, values, knowledge, and wealth—with wealth being only one-fourth of what you pass down Empty nest doesn't have to mean relationship decline—40% of couples divorce during this transition, but it can be your greatest season yet Guest: Lance Welch is a legacy navigator, leadership coach, and author of "Legacy Navigator: Creating Intentional Multi-Generational Impact." Along with his wife, he hosts the "Beyond the Nest" podcast, helping couples thrive during the empty nest transition. After spending decades in corporate leadership at a Fortune 100 company, Lance now coaches business leaders and families on creating intentional impact. He and his wife have been married for 37 years, have three adult sons who are all entrepreneurs, and are proud grandparents of two. In this trial run for the “GrowthBusters Book Club,” we discuss The Serviceberry: Abundance and Reciprocity in the Natural World - by Robin Wall Kimmerer. Cannibal economies, gift economies, reciprocity, and doughnut economics all come up. Sally Gillespie in her Substack column, Psyche's Nest wrote this about Kimmerer's book: “As disruptions and destructions reach our communities in all manner of ways, acts of kindness and generosity are already challenging modernity's stories of ‘never enough' and ‘you're on your own'. Often led by those on the margins, we are remembering how to pool resources and gather for action and care as we tend to losses, connections, breakthroughs, emergencies and emergence. It seems to me that no one word is sufficient to describe this devolving and evolving process we are now in. What we need more than a word or a phrase are stories bearing ancient roots and seeds of possibility for the future.” We also talk briefly about President Trump's “big, beautiful bill” beautifully illustrating how policymakers – cheered on by Jeff Bezos – frequently rely on the crutch of economic growth rather than a sharp pencil in balancing the budget. The increased tax revenue never ends up covering costs – because costs skyrocket, too, in a growing economy. The hard budget-balancing work is looking at the detail, doing the math, ferreting out REAL waste, and setting and following priorities. Interestingly, Robin Wall Kimmerer wrote about this phenomenon: “An economy based on the impossibility of ever-expanding growth leads us into nightmare scenarios. I cringe when I hear economic reports celebrating the accelerating pace of economic growth, as if that were a good thing. It might be good for the Darrens, for the short term, but it is a dead end for others – it is an engine of extinction.” Also, a note about how “record Memorial Day travel” also means record carbon emissions. For another "Couch Bro-Op", Parasite Steve and 8-Bit Alchemy play through one of the most criminally under appreciated titles on the NES. The Guardian Legend was released in 1988, and to this day, there's still nothing like it! This hybrid action-adventure/shoot 'em up game was developed by Compile—a company who has quite the pedigree when it comes to vertical shooting games. You take control of a nameless female cyborg, with the ability to shift between humanoid and spaceship forms. Because—like the Megamaid...she's a TRANSFORMER. As a humanoid, you'll traverse a vast sci-fi labyrinth, collecting power-ups, new sub-weapons and keys that unlock vertical shoot-em up levels (twenty-one in all)! The controls are tight, the exploration is fulfilling and the bosses are pure nightmare fuel! If you haven't played this absolute gem of a game, change that as soon as possible. The Guardian Legend is a must have for fans of both classic Zelda and vertical SHMUPS! ----------------------------------------Retro Ridoctopus is:• Parasite Steve (read)• 8-Bit Alchemy (listen) • Coopster Gold (join) • Nintenjoe (subscribe)----------------------------------------All original heavy metal music by Enchanted Exile

Mike Isaacson is the Artistic Director and Executive Producer of The Muny, the third person to hold this position in The Muny's 106 -year history. During his 14 seasons, he has produced 89 Muny shows, 37 new to The Muny stage. He is also a 9 Time Tony Award winning Broadway producer. After his first season at The Muny, The Riverfront Times wrote, “Under the leadership of executive producer Mike Isaacson the quality of Muny productions rose like the proverbial phoenix.” During his tenure, Isaacson has changed the look and feel of The Muny, overseeing a transformation in every aspect of production that culminated in 2019 with the arrival of the theatre's extraordinary James S. McDonnell stage, a state-of-the art stage house that includes revolutionary LED technology, automated sets, and a host of other innovations. In 2016, The Muny embarked on an unprecedented $100 million capital campaign, raising within 5 years a record amount for any theater in the U.S. During the COVID lock-down summer of 2020, Mike produced and created The Muny 2020 Variety Hour, five live online shows that reached a worldwide audience of more than 400,000. For the summer of 2021, The Muny was one of two theaters in the U.S. to reopen, and produced five full productions, receiving acclaim for their artistry and their presence. The 2022 season's productions received 21 nominations from the St. Louis Theatre Critics Circle, more than any other theater in St. Louis. In 2023, The Muny bested its record with 26 nominations, and for it's 2024 season, The Muny received a record 30 nominations – a record for The Muny and for the Theatre Critics Circle. During his time, The Muny's education and outreach programs have grown in number, and their artistic endeavors now incorporate all aspects of theater making – production, performance and administration. The Muny kids and teens are now recognized nationally for their excellence, inspiring a national program where teens from throughout the U.S. audition annually come to St. Louis to be a part of a Muny production. For 27 years, with his partner Kristin Caskey, Mike has produced more than 40 Broadway musicals and plays, national tours, off-Broadway plays, and London productions. This Spring on Broadway, they are producing Jason Robert Brown's The Last Five Years, co-starring Nick Jonas and Adrienne Warren. In 2023, they produced the highly acclaimed Broadway revival of Parade, starring Ben Platt and Micaela Diamond, now on a national tour. Parade also received “Best Revival of a Musical” as well as “Best Musical Revival” from both The Drama Desk and The Outer Critics Circle. In 2022, they produced Neil Simon's Plaza Suite starring Matthew Broderick and Sarah Jessica Parker, which subsequently had a record-breaking run at London's Savoy Theater. Other recent Broadway productions include David Byrne's American Utopia, for which they received a special 2021 Tony Award. It also became a multi-Emmy Award nominated film by Spike Lee for HBO, for which he also served as an executive producer. In 2015, he received the Tony® award for “Best Musical” for the ground-breaking Fun Home. Other producing highlights include Dolls House, Part 2, The Humans (2016 Tony® Award, Best Play); Bring It On The Musical (2013 Tony® nomination for Best Musical); Red (2010 Tony® Award, Best Play); Legally Blonde the Musical (2011 Olivier Award, Best Musical); Thoroughly Modern Millie (2002 Tony® Award, Best Musical); You're a Good Man, Charlie Brown; If/Then; The Seagull; Burn This, Caroline, or Change; One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest starring Gary Sinise, and Death of a Salesman (1999 Tony® Award). For the IPN, he served as producer for the Broadway productions of Spamalot (2005 Tony® Award, Best Musical), Ragtime (revival) and The Color Purple. All told, his productions have received more than 139 Tony® Award Nominations, and 40 Tony® Awards. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices

On paper, FC Cincinnati fans may have approached this next game with some confidence. After all, keeping Lionel Messi off the scoring sheet is no small feat. Despite losing Kevin Denkey for a prolonged spell, the Orange & Blue rode Evander's brace to silence the Herons 3-0 at TQL Stadium. However, the confidence this weekend could be harder to measure. The news could focus on Evander and Messi again testing each other's MVP chances. However, Messi's absence from the All-Star Game on Wednesday has ruffled feathers in the Winged Lions' fans. That should lead to a suspension if history dictates anything, but can we honestly expect the G.O.A.T. to miss another match against Cincinnati? That possibility still exists, so we ask Alex from Bleacher Report and The Heron's Nest about such a threat. Did Pat Noonan play his cards correctly last time? Can the Orange & Blue pull another fast one against South Beach's Super Squad? What could Javier Mascherano drum up to resume Miami's defense of the Supporters' Shield? On this episode of The Karen Kenney Show, we're talking about something we all do and sometimes struggle with: judgment. You know that voice in your head that's wicked quick to criticize you, make assumptions about others, or have an opinion on things that you may not really know anything about?I'm sharing why that ego-voice of judgment is full of shit and how it's actually keeps us stuck and separate from real human connection. I also drop us all (myself included) a gentle reminder about how we literally have no idea what kind of situations or suffering other people are navigating or going through. I share stories about friends who've lost parents, who've had to say goodbye to beloved pets, and are dealing with massive life challenges - all while looking totally fine on the outside.People are sometimes walking around with “open wounds” we can't see, so maybe we could all use a little more compassion and care, and a lot less judgment. My big takeaway (and challenge to you) is to get curious instead of critical. When you catch yourself judging someone - whether it's how they look, what they're doing, or who they are - pause and ask, "What don't I know about their story?" Turns out, we're not all-knowing gods after all, and pretending we are is just our ego playing tricks on us.
