Nature educator Johanne Ryan shares her observations of Southern Lapwings, shorebirds that make their nests on the ground in open areas and vigorously defend them. If a potential predator approaches, the parent will sound a piercing alarm call. If that doesn't work, the lapwing will charge the opponent, using a secret weapon – sharp, bony spurs on the bird's “wrists.”More info and transcript at BirdNote.org.Want more BirdNote?

Send us an email @ info@parentcoachesunleashed.com SummaryIn this episode, Carrie Wiesenfeld and Jessica Anger discuss the evolving dynamics of communication between parents and their young adult children. They explore the challenges parents face when their children become more independent, the expectations that come with these changes, and the emotional adjustments required for both parties. The conversation highlights the importance of understanding different communication styles, recognizing signs of struggle, and finding a balance between support and independence.
Sometimes the best conversations happen when you throw out the script and just see where things go, and that's what I'm doing in this episode of Leaving the Nest! You'll hear that the “wheel of topics” decides to acknowledge the fact that starting a new job can feel overwhelming. You have new coworkers, new management styles, unfamiliar commutes, and all the anxieties that come with leaving your comfort zone. But I'll highlight how, rather than rushing into decisions, it's important to give yourself time to adjust. Determine whether the discomfort is just temporary or something deeper. We also discuss some practical ways to reframe the experience: remembering why you left your last job, focusing on the excitement that made you accept this one, and even writing out reminders of what you didn't like about your old position. There is so much value in talking things out with the right people - trusted friends, partners, or even your manager, who likely wants you to succeed just as much as you do. Most of all, though, we strongly urge professionalism. Whether you decide to stay or eventually move on, how you handle the situation truly matters. Burned bridges can close doors, while respectful conversations can open new ones. If you've ever felt uneasy in a new role, or are going through it right now, this episode offers both reassurance and actionable advice, and we remind listeners that new job regret is common, often temporary, and always worth approaching with patience, honesty, and perspective! Key Takeaways: Identify the root cause of new job regret, whether it be coworkers, management, commute, or overall discomfort. Give yourself at least three months before making major decisions about leaving. Revisit why you left your old job and what excited you about the prospect of this new one. Talk it out with the right people such as trusted friends, your manager, or your recruiter. If leaving does become necessary, do it respectfully to avoid burning bridges and protect future opportunities. Thanks again for listening to Leaving The Nest! On this episode of The Karen Kenney Show, I talk about something that really lit my heart up.It's all about how a simple question like, “Are you OK?” - can make a world of difference.Inspired by Australia's “R U OK? Day,” I share why checking in on our friends, family, and even ourselves is wicked important, especially with all the heavy stuff going on in the world. I open up about my own experience and how sometimes, just being asked a sincere, “How are you really?” - can be a game changer. It's not just about asking the question, but about being present, paying attention, and noticing when someone might be struggling - even if they're the “strong” one in your circle.I discuss why people sometimes don't reach out for help, and how we can be the ones to go first and offer a listening ear.I also break down the “R U OK?” four-step “ALEC” framework: Ask, Listen, Encourage Action, and Check-In.I talk about how to prepare yourself before having these kind of conversations - making sure that you're ready, in the right headspace, and have consciously picked the right moment.I also share some tips on how to really listen without judgment, encourage small steps forward, and follow-up so people know you truly care.My hope is that you'll take this episode as a little nudge to check in on someone you care about - or even yourself. We all need each other to get through the madness of life, and sometimes the smallest act of kindness can be the biggest blessing. So, are you OK?And if you're not, I hope you know you matter and there's always someone out there who cares! ❤️ KK'S KEY TAKEAWAYS:• Asking “Are you OK?” can make a real difference in someone's life.• The annual “R U OK? Day” in Australia encourages everyone to check in on the people around them.• Pay attention and noticing changes in someone's mood or behavior is a sign to reach out.• Before starting a meaningful conversation, make sure you're ready, prepared, and have picked the right moment.• The 4-step “ALEC” framework - Ask, Listen, Encourage Action, and Check-in - offers a simple way to support others.• Listening without judgment and being fully present helps people feel seen and cared for.• Encouraging small steps or connecting someone to resources can be more helpful than trying to “fix” everything.• Following up after the initial conversation shows you genuinely care and builds trust.• Even strong or independent people need to be checked on, as they may not ask for help.• Practicing kindness and compassion, even in small ways, can have a wicked big impact! In the heart of Virginia's Shenandoah Valley, the town of Mount Jackson is quietly staging a revolution—one that blends entrepreneurial ambition with a hearty dose of small-town quirkiness. In this episode of “The Valley Today,” host Janet Michael sat down with Olivia Hilton, Mount Jackson's dynamic town manager, to discuss how a business incubator program and a potato-themed festival are transforming the local landscape. The conversation opens with Hilton, ever the multitasker, joining the call from her car before a class—a fitting metaphor for the hustle and adaptability that define both her leadership and the town's approach to economic development. At the center of their discussion is the Mount Jackson Five, a business bootcamp and grant program designed to help aspiring entrepreneurs turn their dreams into reality. Now in its second year, the program has already helped launch several successful businesses, thanks to a combination of state funding, local investment, and a supportive community. “We gave out $60,000 in grant funding last year, and all four businesses we supported have opened their doors,” Hilton shares, her pride evident. This year, the program has expanded, with increased funding and a new twist: the creation of “The Nest,” a shared incubator space for businesses not yet ready for a brick-and-mortar location. “We learned that people are at different stages in their entrepreneurial journey,” Hilton explains. “The Nest gives them a place to grow before they take the leap.” The program's collaborative spirit is a key ingredient in its success. Rather than pitting participants against each other, the Mount Jackson Five fosters a sense of family, with group dinners and shared learning experiences. “It's about recruiting, doing a little bit for retention, and then letting them fly,” Hilton says. The bootcamp covers everything from marketing and finance to zoning and signage, with local experts—including Janet—lending their knowledge. But Mount Jackson's renaissance isn't just about business. It's about community, and nothing embodies that better than TaterFest, the town's annual celebration of all things potato. What began as a quirky idea has blossomed into a beloved event, drawing over 3,000 attendees last year. “People will always like quirky,” Hilton laughs. “And everyone likes carbs.” The festival features everything from a “couch potato” 5K and cow patty bingo to tater-themed tattoos and a mashed potato sculpting contest. Local businesses, farmers, and artisans all join in, making it a true showcase of the town's creativity and camaraderie. The festival's success, like the business incubator, is rooted in partnerships. Building owners offer flexible leases and help with renovations, while local organizations pitch in with resources and expertise. “It just takes a little teamwork,” Hilton notes. The town even maintains an up-to-date inventory of available commercial spaces, making it easier for would-be entrepreneurs to find their perfect spot. As the conversation winds down, it's clear that Mount Jackson's story is one of resilience, innovation, and joy. Whether it's launching new businesses or celebrating with a potato pageant, the town is proving that economic development and community spirit can go hand in hand—and that sometimes, the best way to grow is to embrace your inner spud.

Movies like “The Goonies,” “Animal House” and “One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest” are among the most famous of those filmed in Oregon, and they're points of pride for Oregon film buffs. Television shows like “Grimm” and “Portlandia” and animation studios like Laika and ShadowMachine burnish the state’s production portfolio. While newer projects continue to shoot in Oregon, the industry was disrupted by the COVID-19 pandemic, a lengthy writers and actors strike and an industry-wide shift to overseas production. Tim Williams is the executive director of Oregon Film, a semi-independent state agency that promotes movie and TV production in Oregon. He joins us to talk about how the industry is faring in Oregon.

Everything from American Horror Story to One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest, we will be decoding the clues and conspiracies within! This is sensitive content. Listener discretion is advised!
On the fiftieth (!!) episode of All the Film Things, my friends, filmmakers Emma Catherine and Franklin Ritch, join me in analyzing Miloš Forman's 1975 psychological comedy- drama classic, One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest! This episode is spoiler- filled and contains some explicit language. One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest follows R.P. McMurphy (Jack Nicholson) as he becomes a patient at a mental hospital. He quickly becomes a leader with his rebellious, lively nature that awakens his fellow patients but antagonizes the woman who runs the ward, Nurse Ratched (Louise Fletcher), which creates a power balance slowly shifts in McMurphy's favor. The film starts as a comedy- drama but elevates in the third act when it becomes a tragedy. One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest has a stellar ensemble cast that includes Danny DeVito, Will Sampson, and Brad Dourif. This film is the second of three films to have won the “Big Five” at the Oscars and has been widely viewed as one of the greatest films ever made for now 50 years. The film is based on Ken Kesey's 1961 book and, after Kirk Douglas bought the rights soon after the book was published, he wasn't able to get this film made in the 60s, so his son Michael Douglas took over the project and history was made. One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest is one of my very favorite films and I'm thrilled to have finally had such a stimulating conversation on the film for this podcast. This is Franklin's second and Emma's first time on the podcast! I interviewed Franklin at the end of last year (check out Episode 34). I became friends with Franklin approaching two years ago and Emma about a year ago at Film Bar but they have been both friends and collaborators for well over a decade. Franklin directed Emma as Cat- woman in his film New Wings: A Batman Fan Film which you should all watch by clicking this link. One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest is a longtime favorite of Franklin's as well while this was Emma's first time watching the film. As we discuss throughout the episode, we have all been deeply impacted by many moments in this film. This episode was recorded on August 21, 2025. Emma will be starring in a spooky aerial showcase presented by the Ancient City Aerial Arts called Cirque de Morts on October 3 and 4th in St. Augustine, Florida! Get your tickets now for the 7 pm showings or matinee showing before they sell out by clicking here! As for Franklin, he took the time to shout out the new films made by his friends and co- stars from his film The Artifice Girl, which you should all absolutely watch by either renting it on platforms like Apple and Amazon Prime but it is also streaming free with ads on Tubi. Watch the trailer for David Girard's upcoming short film, "Normal", by clicking here and watch the trailer for "Would You Rather", Tatum Matthews' directorial short film by clicking here! Both shorts are coming soon! You should all also check out Franklin's YouTube channel, Last Resort Ideas, to watch his past work and fantastic videos by clicking this link.In this episode, we discuss the big questions surrounding the film including whether or not McMurphy is crazy and if Nurse Ratched has the patients' best interest at heart. Emma dives deep into understanding the potential motivations behind Nurse Ratched and also tells a funny story about a bad football game experience in a little tangent. Franklin talks about the incredible differences between the book and the film while also pointing out the corrupt system in place that harms the patients at the ward. Our analytical conversation is wide- encompassing of the film as we also talk about the push and pull Billy faces between the protagonist and antagonist, the famously shocking electroshock therapy scene, and the cathartic ending. All this and much more on the latest episode of All the Film Things! Background music created and used with permission by the Copyright Free Music - Background Music for Videos channel on YouTube.

From there we go to the Euro BMW PGA as Alex Noren wins in a playoff at Wentworth, Charley Hull's win in Cincinnati on the LPGA Tour, Greg Norman's LIV exit, and close the pod with some laughs as Randy offers some of his favorite Phil Mickelson moments (59:30). In this episode of The Burn Podcast, Ben Newman sits down with mortgage-industry titan, coach, and now author J. J. Mazzo to unpack his new book Perseverance Principles (releasing October 7). J. J. opens up about the messy middle—imposter syndrome, financial pressure, family leadership, and faith—and how seven practical principles became his playbook for pushing through the toughest seasons. This conversation is raw, real, and relentlessly hopeful. From building Impact, his coaching company, to donating the book's proceeds to Robin's Nest and the Orange County Rescue Mission, J. J. shows what it looks like to persevere with purpose and why faith, standards, and community matter most when life hits hard.Together, Ben and J. J. dive into why perseverance is needed now more than ever. They explore how faith anchors discipline, why leading at home is the ultimate test of character, and how grace and forgiveness allow anyone to start over—no matter how far they've fallen. J. J. shares his vulnerable journey of setbacks and shame, and how choosing transparency created a book that is not just a story but a playbook for anyone navigating adversity. His decision to give all proceeds to charity is a testament to his servant leadership and commitment to paying it forward.Pre-Order/Order: Perseverance Principles — releasing October 7 with Wiley. Last week, Andrea and Jodie checked into One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest to talk rebellion, institutions, and what it takes to be a woman in a male-dominated field. This week, we're shipping up to Cambridge for a rewatch of Girl, Interrupted. It's another Winona Ryder voiceover project and the film that gave Angelina Jolie the world's worst bangs. We get into how Susanna Kaysen felt about seeing her memoir on screen, the 90s all-star cast, and what it says about decades of not-so-great mental-health care for women.Next week, get ready to sink your teeth into Jonathan Demme's Oscar-winning classic, The Silence of the Lambs.P.S. In this discussion we talk with Professor Corinna Mullin who is a member of the Anti-Imperialist Scholars Collective. Corinna Mullin is an anti-imperialist academic who teaches political science and economics. Her research examines the historical legacies of colonialism and the role of capitalist expansion and imperialist imbrications in producing peripheral state “security dependency,” with a focus on unequal exchange, super-exploitation, resource extraction, and other forms of surplus value drain/transfer as well as resistance. Corinna has also researched and published academic works on border imperialism, struggles around the colonial-capitalist university, fascism, multipolarity, and national liberation, with a focus on the Maghreb, West Asia, and Turtle Island. Corinna was a member of the Steering Committee for the International Peoples' Tribunal on U.S. Imperialism and organizes with CUNY for Palestine and Labor for Palestine. She serves on the Steering Committee of the Professional Staff Congress (PSC)-CUNY's International Committee and is a member of the Delegate Assembly. Full bio from AISC. In this discussion we primarily discuss her piece, Zionism, Imperialism, and the Struggle Against Global Fascism: Palestine as the ‘Hornet's Nest' of US Empire from the Anti-Imperialist Scholars Collective blog The Pen Is My Machete And a little bit on her piece The ‘War on Terror' as Primitive Accumulation in Tunisia: US-Led Imperialism and the Post-2010-2011 Revolt/Security Conjuncture from Middle East Critique Also I say more about this in the episode, but Dr. Mullin was fired from CUNY as a result of her stance and organizing with respect to Palestine. We will include a statement from AISC on this and a Statement in Solidarity with CUNY Faculty and Students Facing McCarthyite Retaliation for Palestine Solidarity which we have signed. There are also a number of other calls to action for faculty and students at CUNY that we will include in the show description. Corinna talks about those at the end of the episode and we strongly encourage folks to support those calls to action it only takes a minute of your time. In this discussion Dr. Mullin talks a little bit about Dr. Ali Kadri's The Accumulation of Waste: A Political Economy of Systemic Destruction and it just so happens that we have a study group on that exact book starting on October 1st, it's available to everyone who supports the show, whether through patreon, BuyMeACoffee or as a YouTube member of the show. Details on that study group and how to join it are linked in the show description. But just to note that there are only about 40 spots left in the group as we publish this, so if you want to join us, make sure you do so ASAP to reserve your space. Calls to Action: "Hadeeqa Arzoo Malik is being made an example of for the sake of setting the tone across the nation at public universities, as they seek further control over the student movement for Palestine. City College President Vincent Boudreau has already denied her appeal for a drop to the charges, without even an acknowledgement to the 2,000+ calls and emails from the community that demanded her reinstatement. Now, it is time to escalate both our tactics against CUNY and whom we pressure— Take it to the Board of Trustees. Your rage is needed to make it loud and clear that CUNY's repression will not go uninterrupted. CALL CUNY STUDENT AFFAIRS: 646-664-8800 EMAIL THE BOT: https://tinyurl.com/Defendhadeeqaarzoo" Free Tarek Bazrouk! Tarek is a 20-year-old Palestinian from NYC, unjustly convicted of federal charges stemming from his participation in protests against the genocide in Gaza. "Demand Immediate Reinstatement of Terminated Adjunct Faculty and Defend Academic Freedom Send a letter to Brooklyn College President Michelle Anderson, CUNY Chancellor Félix Matos Rodríguez, and CUNY Board Chairperson William Thompson urging them to reinstate the fired adjunct faculty and protect the rights of CUNY students and workers who stand in solidarity with Palestine. The targeting of these individuals is part of a broader assault on higher education and academic freedom. Their fight is our fight—silencing them is an attack on us all. KKEP331 – BEWARE THE TEMPTATIONOn this episode of The Karen Kenney Show podcast, I talk about a recent trip to a casino (for my sweetie's gig with Sully Erna of Godsmack) that really got me thinking about the world we live in today. Walking into that place was like stepping into a full-on sensory overload - bombarded by flashing lights, nonstop sounds, and a vibe that just pulls you and your brain in from every direction. It was wild to notice how everything is designed to keep you distracted and consuming, and it made me realize how easy it is to get swept up in all that noise. As I moved through the casino, I couldn't help but compare it to the way our phones and social media work. Just like the casino, our electronic devices are built to keep us hooked, and chasing that next little dopamine hit. It's so easy to lose track of time and get pulled away from what really matters, whether it's connecting with people, being present, or just enjoying the world around us. This experience was a wake-up call for me to check in with myself and ask some honest questions:Where am I getting distracted? What am I letting pull my attention away from the things and people that truly matter? I realized that it's not about judging ourselves, but about getting real and making sure we're living on purpose, not just on autopilot. So, if you're feeling a little lost in all the noise out there or like you've been “dopamined into oblivion,” - you're not alone. I hope this episode inspires you to pause, take a fearless look at where your time and energy are really going, and remember what you're here to do. Let's get back to what matters most and leave a little more love behind wherever we go. ❤️ KK'S KEY TAKEAWAYS:• Casinos are designed to create sensory overload and to keep people distracted and consuming – food, booze, gambling, shopping, etc• Modern technology and social media run the same sort of racket and use similar tactics to capture our attention and keep us hooked.• It's wicked easy to lose sight of what really matters - when we're constantly bombarded by all kinds of distractions.• Taking time to reflect on where our attention habitually goes can help us live more intentionally.• Being self-aware allows us to focus on meaningful relationships, intentional activities, and our true purpose.• It's important to pause, ask ourselves honest questions, and make sure we're not living life on autopilot.• Choosing to use our time, gifts, and energy for love and service - can help us make a difference and leave a positive impact! EPYSODE 52: "The Nest" by Jeannie Piersol. Guests: Jeannie Piersol, Alec Palao. Additional commentary by: Uncle Herff. Here we explore the story behind "The Nest" , a 2025 release showcasing the mesmerizing recordings of Jeannie Piersol, a once-overlooked voice from the late '60s Bay Area scene. While never released as a full album at the time, these tracks — produced during a brief but creatively rich period, have been carefully compiled and reissued for the first time. We're joined by Jeannie Piersol herself, along with music historian Alec Palao, for an exclusive conversation about the music's origins, the vibrant scene that shaped it, and the process of curating "The Nest" nearly six decades later. Discover how these long-shelved recordings finally found their moment, and why it's being hailed as a hidden gem of psychedelic soul and folk-pop history. On the morning of his long-awaited trip to document golf in Scotland without a set itinerary, Seve Saiz found his car window smashed and his clubs, equipment and clothes all missing. Instead of canceling his trip, Seve left anyway and documented his trip on an old camcorder using rented clubs while travelling across Scotland in a camper. His story piqued our interest, so TC caught up with Seve to relive it all.
