Verses covered: Cc Madhya 8.78-127 A materialistic person with material opulences should not be very proud or puffed up before a transcendental devotee. If one approaches a transcendental devotee on the strength of one's material heritage, opulence, education and beauty and does not offer respect to the advanced devotee of the Lord, the Vaiṣṇava devotee may offer formal respects to such a materially puffed-up person, but he may not deliver transcendental knowledge to him. Indeed, the devotee sees him as a non-brāhmaṇa or śūdra. Such a puffed-up person cannot understand the science of Kṛṣṇa. A proud person is deceived in transcendental life and, despite having attained a human form, will again glide into hellish conditions. By His personal example, Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu explains how one should be submissive and humble before a Vaiṣṇava, even though one may be situated on a high platform. Such is the teaching of Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu as the ācārya of the world, the supreme spiritual master and teacher. One who surrenders to Him and is ready to follow Him with heart and soul does not need to change his location. Nor is it necessary for one to change his status. One may remain a householder, a medical practitioner, an engineer or whatever. It doesn't matter. One only has to follow the instruction of Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu, chant the Hare Kṛṣṇa mahā-mantra and instruct relatives and friends in the teachings of the Bhagavad-gītā and Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam. One has to learn humility and meekness at home, following the instructions of Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu, and in that way one's life will be spiritually successful. One should not try to be an artificially advanced devotee, thinking, “I am a first-class devotee, so it is best not to accept any disciples.” Such thinking should be avoided. One has to become purified at home by chanting the Hare Kṛṣṇa mahā-mantra and preaching the principles enunciated by Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu. Thus one can become a spiritual master and be freed from the contamination of material life. Devotional activities, however, sometimes appear to be impure in the neophyte stage, but in the mature stage they are completely pure, or free from material activity. Therefore Rāmānanda Rāya replied after hearing the last statement of Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu: prema-bhakti — sarva-sādhya-sāra. Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu actually accepted this verse (jñāne prayāsam) as the basic principle of perfection. One has to practice this principle in order to make further progress. When further progress is actually made, one comes to the platform of ecstatic loving service to the Lord. This first stage is technically called sādhana-bhakti, or devotional service in practice. The result of sādhana-bhakti must be ecstatic love, attachment for the Supreme Personality of Godhead, which is also called prema-bhakti. In the neophyte stage, sādhana-bhakti includes faith, association with devotees, and practicing devotional service. Thus one is freed from all unwanted things. One then becomes fixed in devotional service and increases his desire to act in devotional service. Thus one becomes attached to the Lord and His devotional service. It's such an important part of the culture, and that is that devotées are recommended. After seeing the character of a certain person as you said, then an elevated Vaiṣṇava will accept and appreciate based on that. When Prabhupāda got initiated in Allāhābād from Śrīla Bhaktisiddhānta Sarasvatī Ṭhākur, the local devotees there recommended him to Śrīla Bhaktisiddhānta. Because he came there and uplifted the whole Yātrā—he was a business person—but then, when he was there, they saw he could do everything. He was expert at bhajan, harmonium, mṛdaṅga, giving class, leadership, management, everything. They recommended him. And Śrīla Bhaktisiddhānta said, "Yes, I have marked him," because he had come to the Yātrā of his spiritual master. And Śrīla Bhaktisiddhānta noted that he liked to hear. He said, "I've marked him that he likes to hear, and he doesn't go away." He initiated him (Prabhupada) there. Take time to discuss what we are reciting by rote every day—because when you do something every day by rote, you might not be aware of what you're even saying. My father used to work in a repertory theater when he was in college, and he said that the producer would have the actors come on stage off cue, or they would say lines that were different from what was in the actual play. In repertory theater, you do the same play over and over again—sometimes for a year or more—and in order for the troupe to not get used to it, he would have them always be aware that anything could happen. Someone might come in stage left instead of stage right, or someone might say a line that wasn't in the script. That was by design—to keep everybody aware. So it can be helpful when we do daily routines. And the more we can add significant verses and opportunities to recite things on a daily basis, the better. You get used to it after a while, and it's like when you put a frog—(not that I've ever done this; it's just a thought experiment)—in a pan of water and turn it up gradually, the frog doesn't notice it until it's too late. If you put him abruptly into hot water, he'll jump right out. In a similar way, as we continue to add little aspects of verse recitation or extra bhajan to our program, at a certain point you may notice that it's significant increase—but it's so gradual that you don't notice it's happening. The other byproduct is that, you just notice that by adding these types of verses that are important to certain rituals that we do regularly is that you know them. Federal agencies' latest status updates on how they're using artificial intelligence reveal persistent barriers and variability on where agencies stand with ”high-impact” use cases. The release of the 2025 AI compliance plans offers one of the first in-depth glimpses at how federal agencies are addressing issues of AI risk management, technical capacity and workforce readiness under the second Trump administration. Those documents, which were required under the Trump administration's AI governance memo to agencies, were supposed to be released publicly by Sept. 30. As of publication time, FedScoop located roughly 20 plans and 14 strategies across 22 agencies. For nine of the roughly two dozen Chief Financial Officers Act agencies, FedScoop was unable to find either a plan or a strategy. The U.S. Department of Agriculture and the Nuclear Regulatory Commission, meanwhile, produced only strategies. FedScoop and DefenseScoop attempted to contact the CFO Act agencies that didn't produce both documents, but the agencies either didn't respond or didn't provide the documents. Two of those agencies, NASA and the Justice Department, noted the government shutdown in their responses, and both the DOJ and Department of Defense indicated they were working to post at a later date. Agencies were also required to submit AI strategies for the first time this year. Those documents contain some of the same information as the compliance documents, including plans to train the workforce, examples of use cases, and systems for governance. The compliance plans, meanwhile, which are in their second year, have changed only slightly from their previous iterations, with some agencies showing progress on their implementation of the technology and risk management practices. A top Senate Democrat introduced legislation Thursday to extend and rename an expired information-sharing law, and make it retroactive to cover the lapse that began Oct. 1. Michigan Sen. Gary Peters, the ranking member of the Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee, introduced the Protecting America from Cyber Threats (PACT) Act, to replace the expired Cybersecurity and Information Sharing Act of 2015 (CISA 2015) that has provided liability protections for organizations that share cyber threat data with each other and the federal government. Industry groups and cyber professionals have called those protections vital, sometimes describing the 2015 law as the most successful cyber legislation ever passed. The 2015 law shares an acronym with the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency, which some Republicans — including the chairman of Peters' panel, Rand Paul of Kentucky — have accused of engaging in social media censorship. As CISA 2015 has lapsed and Peters has tried to renew it, “some people think that's a reauthorization of the agency,” Peters told reporters Thursday in explaining the new bill name. The Environmental Protection Agency's pledge to “get out of the way” on chemical reviews to accelerate the buildout of artificial intelligence data centers doesn't mean those reviews would be any less “robust,” a top EPA nominee told lawmakers Wednesday. Appearing before the Senate Environment & Public Works Committee, Douglas Troutman — President Donald Trump's pick for assistant administrator for toxic substances — was pressed by Sen. Ed Markey, D-Mass., about comments made by EPA Administrator Lee Zeldin last month following a White House roundtable with AI and data center leaders. In a Sept. 18 press release, Zeldin announced that the EPA would begin prioritizing the review of new chemicals — under the Toxic Substances Control Act (TSCA) — that would be used in data center projects. Markey asked Troutman, a former chemical industry lobbyist, what provisions in federal toxic safety laws indicate the EPA can “get out of the way of reviewing chemicals for safety.” Troutman responded that “nothing will change with regard to the robust review based on the risk-based statute enacted under Section Five of TSCA.” Markey appeared unconvinced, telling Troutman that if he's confirmed, he will “be under orders from Administrator Zeldin to get out of the way.” The Massachusetts Democrat made the case that “big tech bosses” with ties to the administration could lean on the agency to bypass regular review protocols. Voting rights groups are asking a court to block an ongoing Trump administration effort to merge disparate federal and state voter data into a massive citizenship and voter fraud database. Last week, the League of Women Voters, the Electronic Privacy Information Center (EPIC) and five individuals sued the federal government in D.C. District Court, saying it was ignoring decades of federal privacy law to create enormous “national data banks” of personal information on Americans. On Tuesday, the coalition, represented by Democracy Forward Foundation, Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington (CREW), and Fair Elections Center, asked the court for an emergency injunction to halt the Trump administration's efforts to transform the Systematic Alien Verification for Entitlements into an immense technological tool to track potential noncitizens registered to vote. Until this year, SAVE was an incomplete and limited federal database meant to track immigrants seeking federal benefits. In an Oct. 7 court filing, the groups said an immediate injunction was needed to prevent permanent privacy harms due to the “illegal and secretive consolidation of millions of Americans' sensitive personal data across government agencies into centralized data systems” through SAVE. Every knowledge system requires axiomatic statements. Otherwise, you can't go anywhere. Axiomatic means they don't require investigation. They're just accepted. And if you don't have that, as Aristotle said, you get infinite regress. You can't go anywhere. It's like troops keep retreating and retreating and retreating, and they never stand and fight. And H. H. Hridayānanda Mahārāja gave the example of this: that someone says, 'What temperature is water? What, 200 degrees, or whatever it is.' I said, 'Prove it.' So then you get water, and you boil it, put a thermometer in, and then it says 200, and then it starts to boil. And you say, 'There, it's proved.' He says, 'Wait a minute, prove that's a real thermometer.' So then you go get a thermometer testing kit, whatever that is, and you test it. You say, 'Okay, it's real.' And then you go, 'Prove that that's a real thermometer testing kit.' And in that way, you keep going back and back and back. There has to be a point at which you have an axiom where this is the source—this is self-revealing. It proves itself. You don't have to investigate it. So, every system has that. In our system of epistemology, the Vedas are apauruṣeya. They're not from a human source. They come directly from the Divine. In fact, they're co-eternal with Kṛṣṇa, and they prove themselves. And of course, Prabhupāda goes into some detail on this in the beginning of the Śrī Īśopaniṣad in this lecture in Albert Hall. He gave this as a premise to say how to understand this philosophy. In our system of epistemology, the Vedas are apauruṣeya. They're not from a human source. They come directly from the Divine. In fact, they're co-eternal with Kṛṣṇa, and they prove themselves. And of course, Prabhupāda goes into some detail on this in the beginning of the Śrī Īśopaniṣad in this lecture in Albert Hall. He gave this as a premise to say how to understand this philosophy. There is a long passage on that in the Bṛhat Bhagavatamṛta, and there, Sanātana Goswāmī gives ample evidence about how the primary process in Kali Yuga is the chanting of the holy names. Jīva Goswāmī also concludes that there are, other processes that we engage in. For instance, arcanam is there in the nine, but he says there that because in this age, the prime method is chanting Hare Kṛṣṇa, even with arcanam, it has to be preceded by chanting of the Mahāmantra and followed by chanting the Mahāmantra in order for it to be successful. And that emphasis is there throughout the teachings of the Goswāmīs: that chanting is the primary process. Caitanya Mahāprabhu said it himself when asked, 'Of all the different processes, which completes them all?' And it's the chanting of the holy name of The Lord. As to why it's because it's especially recommended. A federal workers' union is suing the Education Department after agency employees on furlough or administrative leave discovered that their automatic email replies had been changed to a message blaming Democratic lawmakers for the ongoing government shutdown. The complaint, filed by the American Federation of Government Employees, asks a court to prohibit the Education Department's alleged efforts to “put political speech in federal employees' mouths.” “Forcing civil servants to speak on behalf of the political leadership's partisan agenda is a blatant violation of federal employees' First Amendment rights,” the suit stated, adding that “employees are now forced to involuntarily parrot the Trump Administration's talking points with emails sent out in their names.” The suit came one day after some furloughed workers discovered that their automatic out-of-office email replies were changed without their knowledge, from neutral language to partisan messaging that blamed Democrats for the shutdown, which began last Wednesday. Three House Democrats questioned the Department of Homeland Security on Monday over a reported Immigration and Customs Enforcement contract with a spyware provider that they warn potentially “threatens Americans' freedom of movement and freedom of speech.” Their letter follows publication of a notice that ICE had lifted a stop-work order on a $2 million deal with Israeli spyware company Paragon Solutions, a contract that the Biden administration had frozen one year ago pending a review of its compliance with a spyware executive order. Paragon is the maker of Graphite, and advertises it as having more safeguards than competitors that have received more public and legal scrutiny, such as NSO Group's Pegasus, a claim researchers have challenged. A report earlier this year found suspected deployments of Graphite in countries across the globe, with targets including journalists and activists. A devotee asked Prabhupāda, "what's the difference between mental speculation and philosophical speculation?" Prabhupada said, "If the conclusion is Kṛṣṇa is the Supreme Personality of Godhead, then it's philosophical speculation. If it is that there is no God or Kṛṣṇa is not the Supreme Personality of Godhead, then it's mental speculation." So, one of the main points here, in these three verses, is svataḥ-pramāṇa. In any philosophical system, there has to be axiomatic truth. Otherwise, you have no place to stand. If you start to solve mathematical problem—you have to solve for x. You have to have a basis to start from. Otherwise, you get infinite regress and infinite deconstruction of everything you're talking about, and you have nowhere to go except for backwards, meaning that everything is up for interpretation. There has to be a place for svataḥ-pramāṇa—it's automatically revealed, just like the sun. You don't have to speculate when the sun came out; it's obvious. And so the śāstra reveals itself, and it's considered apauruṣeya. It's the ultimate word in everything, the Vedic word. So, that's what Caitanya Mahāprabhu was pointing out. In Episode 443 of Hidden Forces, Demetri Kofinas speaks with former investment banker turned global strategist Viktor Shvets, whose books The Great Rupture and The Twilight Before the Storm provide an audaciously comprehensive and compelling framework for understanding the forces shaping our world. These include technology and finance, amplified by climate change, demographics, and a series of socioeconomic and geopolitical shocks that have created the once-in-a-century superstorm now enveloping Western democracies. Viktor and Demetri spend the first hour of this episode exploring Shvets' central critique of neoliberalism and why he believes that much of the current crisis stems from this failed ideology. They compare today's sociopolitical and economic dynamics to those that overtook the world in the 1930s, focusing on technology-driven social disruption, a decline in the marginal utility of labor, runaway asset prices, repeated financial shocks, pandemics, climate stress, migration, and a deep loss of faith in institutions, in our collective identity, and in our shared capacity to solve problems. The second hour turns to questions of policy design, institutional reform, and portfolio strategy. Viktor and Demetri debate the pros and cons of redistributive solutions such as universal basic income and more heavy-handed fixes to America's broken healthcare system and antiquated educational model. They also stress-test alternative modes of sociopolitical organization such as despotic feudalism, techno-communism, or models that attempt to better balance the more extreme outcomes that a highly technologized society like ours would produce. The two end the episode with a conversation about digital currencies and the disruptive potential that decentralized finance will have on money and banking.
