Excerpt from the answer: My experience is very practical, and that is that when you enter into any relationship, there's going to be a deep concern for the other person. For instance, I'll give you an example: Rādhanāth Swāmī, he has a few disciples, and recently, when I was speaking to him, he had been consoling a lot of people: before they were dying, while they were dying, then the families after, and practically just one after another. And he said, "Yeah, that's a thing when you have disciples, because some of them die," and, I mean, they all do eventually, but maybe not before you, and then you're part of that. It's heart-wrenching when somebody you love passes away. And in the meantime, before that comes, when you're connected deeply to people who you care about in a spiritual relationship, they go through changes. You know, they make vows, and then they say, "Oh, I can't follow the vows now." Or they say, "You know, this happened in my life, and what do I do about that? Such and such hit me," and that keeps you up all night. I mean, I don't know about dreams, but definitely people calling late in the night with a text saying, "What do I do now? I got locked out of the house," or something like that. I mean, that's real-life experience of what happens. So, you know, it's on a very practical level. When we love people, we have a deep relationship where we're part of their lives, and they're part of our lives, and that's something, you know, you want to take on if you love somebody and you want to help them. But you have to go through it with them. It's not compartmentalized. It's part of your life. They're part of your life, and you're part of theirs. And that's an all-encompassing experience. It's a secret. In the Kali-yuga: Rādhā and Kṛṣṇa have combined into one form, and it is by worshiping that one form, which is Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu—who is the combination of Rādhā and Kṛṣṇa—that Bhaktivinoda Ṭhākura makes an explanation about, he says, " (ese) bṛndābane rādhā-śyāmer pa'be daraśan gaura-kṛpā ha'le he." He says, "Oh this is the most wonderful thing you are ever going to hear! This is the biggest news!" Turn off all other apps; they're not important anymore. There's only one thing that's important, and that is Rādhā and Krṣṇa have combined into one form, as Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu. And if you come and bow down to the lotus feet of Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu and take his process of chanting the Hare Krṣṇa mahāmantra and spread it all over the world, then 'se se Vṛndāvane Rādhā-Śyāme pābe darśan.' You can enter into the pastimes of Rādhā and Krṣṇa, the love affair. The only thing that's worth thinking about: the love affair, the ādī-rasa that's going on in the spiritual world. And you'll be carried to the spiritual world by diving into the ocean of saṅkīrtan of Lord Caitanya Mahāprabhu. You'll come up on the beach, and you'll drag yourself up on the beach after being washed away by the saṅkīrtan movement. You'll look up, and you'll see Rādhā and Krṣṇa and their divine pastimes by the mercy of Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu! Therefore, Bhaktivinoda Ṭhākur gave us this very special song to sing, to remember that the Kali-yuga, it's the worst age. prāyeṇālpāyuṣaḥ sabhya kalāv asmin yuge janāḥ mandāḥ sumanda-matayo manda-bhāgyā hy upadrutāḥ (ŚB 1.1.10) This means, according to sages at Naimiṣāraṇya, in this Iron Age of Kali, men have but short lives.Tell me if you agree! They are quarrelsome, lazy, misguided, unlucky, and always disturbed. Cc Madhya 22.51-98 https://vedabase.io/en/library/cc/madhya/22/ ------------------------------------------------------------ That's my point: everybody can rise. That's what Lord Caitanya is saying. And that's what Vyāsadeva says in the Vedānta-sūtra. He said the śāstras are all saying you should rise to the highest level, therefore you can, because if you couldn't rise to the highest level, then the śāstra would be illogical to say, "Rise to the highest platform." There's also the way of defining what a pure devotee is. In Bhagavad-gītā, Kṛṣṇa says (BG 9.30): api cet su-duracaro bhajate mam ananya-bhak sadhur eva sa mantavyaḥ samyag vyavasito hi saḥ Which means that even if somebody at this point is encumbered by some worldliness, because their determination and intention is fixed properly, then Kṛṣṇa says emphatically, you have to consider them sādhus, and that's a big name: they're called a Sādhu. What's more, you find the nuances and definitions in the Nectar of Instruction, verse number five, in the purport. Prabhupāda describes kaniṣṭha, madhyama, and uttama more in the context of, let's say, our ISKCON society, and then he describes a neophyte as somebody who just joined and is just making their way, getting chastised by everybody for sitting in the wrong direction. Then there's the madhyama-adhikārī. But then he gives the uttama-adhikārī: he says somebody who's been practicing for a long time and has shown they're steady in the process, and they preach, and they know śāstra. Now, those are verifiable. You can see if somebody is doing that because they either show up or they don't. And then, do they know śāstra? Well, I mean, there are different levels of knowing śāstra. But if they know the basic śāstra enough to establish that Kṛṣṇa is the Supreme Personality of Godhead and some other things, that's pretty good. And then, that they preach. If you try to take other kinds of definitions of uttama-adhikārī which are bandied about a lot, like, "How do you judge somebody's faith?" and "Okay, they have to be seeing Kṛṣṇa directly." We'll just ask them, "Are you seeing Kṛṣṇa directly?" Even the Six Gosvāmīs say, "No, we don't see Kṛṣṇa, we're looking for Him." And if somebody does say they saw Kṛṣṇa last night and were dancing with Him, how are you going to prove otherwise? Say, "Yeah, I dance with Him every night." And then say, "Okay, well, prove me wrong that I wasn't dancing with Him." So that's not the means by which we judge whether somebody is a kaniṣṭha, madhyama, or uttama; it has to be verifiable signs. Madhvācārya says, when you're discerning an advanced devotee, you can't judge by the ecstatic emotions, because some pure devotees hide their emotions. That's in that verse: evaṁ-vrataḥ sva-priya-nāma-kīrtyā. He said there are only two ways by which you can judge the pure devotee, and that's: one is by their steadiness, and the other is by what they say. In the beginning He describes the truth about the living entity and the superexcellence of devotional service. He then describes the uselessness of mental speculation and mystic yoga. In all circumstances the living entity is recommended to accept the path of devotional service as personally explained by Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu. The speculative method of the so-called jñānīs is considered a waste of time, and that is proved in this chapter. An intelligent person should abandon the processes of karma-kāṇḍa, jñāna-kāṇḍa and mystic yoga. One should give up all these useless processes and take seriously to the path of Kṛṣṇa consciousness. In this way one's life will be successful. If one takes to Kṛṣṇa consciousness fully, even though he may sometimes be agitated due to having previously practiced mental speculation and yogic mysticism, he will be saved by Lord Kṛṣṇa Himself. The fact is that devotional service is bestowed by the blessings of a pure devotee (sa mahātmā su-durlabhaḥ). A pure devotee is the supreme transcendentalist, and one has to receive his mercy for one's dormant Kṛṣṇa consciousness to be awakened. One has to associate with pure devotees. If one has firm faith in the words of a great soul, pure devotional service will awaken. In this chapter Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu differentiates between a pure devotee and others. He also describes the characteristics of a pure devotee. A devotee's most formidable enemy is association with women in an enjoying spirit. Association with nondevotees is also condemned because it is also a formidable enemy on the path of devotional service. One has to fully surrender unto the lotus feet of Kṛṣṇa and give up attraction for women and nondevotees. The six symptoms of fully surrendered souls are also described in this chapter. Devotional service has been divided into two categories — regulative devotional service and spontaneous love. There are sixty-four items listed in regulative devotional service, and out of these sixty-four the last five are considered very important. By practicing even one of the nine processes of devotional service, one can become successful. Speculative knowledge and mystic yoga can never help one in devotional service. Pious activity, nonviolence, sense control and regulation are not separate from devotional service in its pure form. If one engages in devotional service, all good qualities follow. One does not have to cultivate them separately. Spontaneous devotional service arises when one follows a pure devotee who is awakened to spontaneous love of God. Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu describes the symptoms of devotees who are already situated in spontaneous love of God. He also describes the devotees who are trying to follow in the footsteps of the pure devotees. Nearly two months after calling on the Office of Management and Budget to bar use of xAI's Grok chatbot in government, a coalition of advocacy groups is pressing its case further after the General Services Administration struck a deal with Elon Musk's AI company to deploy Grok across the federal government. In a letter sent Wednesday to OMB Director Russell Vought, the advocacy groups reiterated their concerns in the wake of the GSA OneGov deal, along with recent comments from Michael Kratsios, the director of the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy. “OMB is entrusted with ensuring that AI systems procured by the federal government meet the highest standards of truth-seeking, accuracy and neutrality,” the letter, led by Public Citizen, stated. “Grok has repeatedly demonstrated failures in these areas and Director Kratsios himself has confirmed that such behavior is the precise type that Executive Order 14319 was designed to prevent.” The letter refers to an executive order signed by President Donald Trump in July that seeks to prevent “woke AI,” or ideological biases in models that are used by the federal government. The groups argued in their August letter to Vought that the use of Grok contradicts this order, given its past controversies with spewing antisemitic and pro-Hitler content. Weeks after the letter was sent, GSA inked a deal with xAI to offer Grok models to the government for a nominal cost. Under the deal, federal agencies can buy Grok 4 and Grok 4 Fast for 42 cents until March 2027. The White House appears to be moving forward with plans to redesign federal government websites, registering a new government domain — techforce.gov — this week. The new URL, which was first discovered Thursday by a bot tracking new government domains, leads to a sign-in page that states “National Design Studio” and “Tech Force” at the top. It includes a form for users to submit their email and receive a code to access the website. Records maintained by the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency show the domain was registered Oct. 24 and last changed Wednesday. The domain registration comes more than two months after President Donald Trump signed an executive order launching an “America by Design” initiative focused on both digital and physical spaces. The topic today is 10 Principles to Develop Determination. Let's think first about the word determination. It has the word terminus in it, and that means, essentially, that one can finish what one starts. If you have ever started to read a book and then found that you only got to the second chapter, or if you had an idea to write in your notebook every day for the year, but you found in your drawer five to seven notebooks that were a quarter filled because you started and then you stopped, then maybe you felt frustrated and thought, 'Why couldn't I finish?' What to speak of finishing devotional practices, many people take vows and then later on, they give them up. It's practically commonplace. In fact, those who do follow vows stand out because people say, 'How is it they're still doing it?' And Prabhupāda told us, once, "Don't be amazed at who stops following their vows, be amazed at who does, as it's far more extraordinary." Those who do have the determination to continue and at least put together one lifetime in full dedication to Kṛṣṇa are notable. So, let's talk about some of the principles of determination today. My intention by mentioning these principles is that you can take them with you. Many of them are very practical, and you can enact them yourself, especially if you make a note or listen to this later and go through the ten and find out how you can execute each one of them. I guarantee you'll find an increase in the determination in your life, and maybe other benefits will come from this as well. As a preface to expressing how to develop determination, I'll start with the precursors—how to prepare the field to enact these ten that I'm going to mention today. There's one transition we'll all experience but hardly talk about: Death. Whether out of fear or taboo, so much of our culture and communities shy away from the topic. Still, it lingers in the back of our mind and flutters in our subconscious.  On the topic of dying and deathwork we interview Scott Kirschenbaum, known for his stunning documentaries where he captures some of life's most intense and raw moments. His work with Ethan Sisser was no different; after learning of a young man with brain cancer, Scott agreed to filming his final weeks — and moments — of life. After spending fourteen days at his bedside, Scott's relationship with death was transformed.  “If you love something, start grieving for it. Based on the beloved Alan Moore graphic novel, From Hell centers around a renowned detective who is hunting down Jack the Ripper and using his helpful powers of deduction to save the girls being harmed by this mad man before it's too late, while also discovering the truth around who the Ripper is. Convoluted and silly, From Hell is a piece of early 2000s nostalgia for millennial audiences that works more as a fun, disposable period thriller than the next film within the Hughes Brothers' filmography, as it seems that they were directors for hire and doesn't have much of their voice found within their first two films. Ryan, Jay, and Josh talk about their thoughts on the film, how it fits in the Hughes Brothers filmography, the careers of Johnny Deep and Heather Graham, Josh's connection to the history of Jack the Ripper, how much a nice guy Alan Moore seems (sarcasm), and what the hell is going on with the James Bond franchise and plenty of more tangents. Miliani Rodriguez is a senior at Coachella Valley High School. The school buildings are old, she says, and they show it. The air conditioning often breaks in over 100-degree heat. When it rains, the ceilings leak. The sinks in her ceramics classroom broke and flooded the classroom. Miliani thought these kinds of things were normal, after attending school in the Coachella Valley Unified School District since kindergarten. But last year she visited her cousin's high school, just a couple of miles away from her, and found modern buildings, spacious athletic fields, and working air conditioning. State of California, which claims the way the state subsidizes school renovations perpetuates vast inequalities for students, sending more money to districts that already have more property wealth, and locking out poor districts from accessing funding. Doesn't matter how much yoga you practice. Doesn't matter how detached you are, how mindful you are of the world; you may even achieve the point of equanimity. Has anybody here achieved complete equanimity, even when the monkey jumps on your head? No problem! So, even if you've achieved that state, it won't help you unless you have Acyuta-bhāva; you have to have that awakening that comes from Madana-Mohan. It stimulates the heart. It could come from the scent of the Tulasī leaf mixed with saffron. It could come from that one last Kīrtan, and we've seen it before. One young devotee came to the New York Ratha-yātrā. Complete equilibrium in life, because he grew up in a devotee family, and in one Kīrtan, the devotees were jumping up off the ground, and then he started jumping off the ground. After that, he said, "I'm in all the way." Changed. His heart changed. We know another devotee who came to Jagannāth Purī, and he saw the lotus eyes of Toṭā Gopināth, and he said, "That's it. I'm convinced. I'm in." Kṛṣṇa touches our heart. naiṣkarmyam apy acyuta-bhāva-varjitaṁ na śobhate jñānam (SB 1.5.12) Nothing else is enough in this world, through any process, except for bhakti, represented by Madana-Mohan. And that's what this temple is. It's what we should build in our heart. A monument in the heart that says nothing else but Kṛṣṇa only: the worshiping of Kṛṣṇa's lotus feet, chanting Hare Kṛṣṇa. No other demigod, no other movie star, no other sports guy—unless you see them in relationship to Kṛṣṇa. When we have that experience of "I'm attracted to Kṛṣṇa, and all I want is Kṛṣṇa," it doesn't matter externally how entangled we are.
