In this episode of the Plant Medicine Podcast, researcher Chris Timmermann, PhD joins to discuss his recent publication regarding psychedelic apprenticeship. Dr. Timmermann is a researcher at the Center for Psychedelic Research at Imperial College London where he conducted the first neuroimaging studies of DMT in healthy volunteers to explore potential mental health impacts. He is also the president and founder of the Foundation for the Study of Human Consciousness in Chile. Dr. Timmermann’s paper "Towards psychedelic apprenticeship: Developing a gentle touch for the mediation and validation of psychedelic-induced insights and revelations" was recently published in December 2020 and it provides a framework for tackling the difficult problem of mediating knowledge gained during psychedelic experiences. In this conversation, Dr. Timmermann breaks down his article and discusses how different contexts for psychedelic use (such as therapeutic, neo-shamanic, and research) each come with their unique concerns in terms of the knowledge these experiences can induce. Highlighting the fact that it is the same mechanism causing both therapeutic benefits and potential distress following psychedelic experience, Dr. Timmerman explains that psychedelic guides and even researchers can profoundly influence the content of a psychedelic experience. His framework for apprenticeship seeks to address how guides and researchers can best wield this influence positively, and provides suggestions for how to better approach the integration of experiences which feature visions or insights that can be difficult to understand and internalize. In this episode: Dr. Timmermann’s framework for psychedelic apprenticeship Why psychedelic revelations can be a double-edged sword Psychedelic insights and vision in therapeutic, neo-shamanic, and research contexts Spiritual bypassing in the psychedelic community What gives psychedelic or mystical visions their sense of authority Quotes: “There is a strong need for an intersubjective component to validate this knowledge, these revelations, these insights.” [8:45] “The striking thing that I thought was really important was that it seems to be the same mechanism which drives the benefits but also drives the complications.” [15:58] “The broader culture is inviting some sorts of narratives and experiences and because the psychedelic state is a permeable state, the system is porous to these narratives and memes.” [33:33] “This process of apprenticeship essentially is a framework for us to understand how we can help make sense of these experiences for people, how they can approach the experience, but with a light touch.” [41:55] “What we’re doing with the science and what we’re doing with these papers and so on is providing some form of context, some form of mediation, some form of knowledge to try to contain these experiences a bit more.” [50:26] Links: Dr. Chris Timmermann on Twitter Center for Psychedelic Research at Imperial College London Dr. Timmermann’s recent paper “Towards psychedelic apprenticeship: Developing a gentle touch for the mediation and validation of psychedelic-induced insights and revelations” Psychedelic Medicine Association Porangui
If You Want To Find Your Weight Loss Code You Should: Stop believing that everything that is working for other women is also going to work for you Do a hormone test that tells you what your body is asking for and when Find a balance between a calorie-restrictive diet and a way to nourish your adrenal system and thyroid I know first hand how frustrating it can be to not know what is going on with your body. The #1 most disruptive symptom I hear from women in perimenopause and beyond is unexplained weight gain and weight loss resistance. Often times it’s a combination of hormones and lifestyle that can be the culprit, but it takes some work to figure out your unique weight loss code. You Are Not Alone in This Struggle Karen Martel is a Certified Transformational Nutrition Coach and weight loss and hormone expert. After finding stubborn weight after the birth of her first child, Karen tried everything that other women were doing but still found no success. It wasn’t until a naturopath ran a hormone lab that she realized the real source of her issues. Karen is determined to bring this knowledge to other women, and help them breakthrough weight loss resistance to find their own personal weight loss code. Through nutrition and hormone optimization, Karen is passionate about helping the millions of other women dealing with these issues figure their bodies out. The Goldilocks Protocol Almost every woman in North America is dealing with some sort of cortisol or insulin issue but doesn’t know it. When we enter our late 30’s and early 40’s, our progesterone and estrogen start to drop and can wreak havoc on our hormone levels. A common side effect of this change in hormones is weight gain, but it takes an individualized protocol to figure out what is going to work for you. Over-exercising, restricting our food intake, and trying to place a bandaid on our root cause of hormone issues is not doing you any good. You can’t lie to yourself about your health, and it is time you started listening to what your body is trying to tell you to find lasting change. Finding The Diet That Works For You As women, we are constantly bombarded with the next new diet that promises to cure all of our concerns. In reality, these fad diets are ruining your metabolism and making us suffer. Methodologies such as the ketogenic diet or intermittent fasting can work as a therapeutic way to get your hormones back on track, but they are not sustainable in the long term, especially for women. Karen recommends a primal based diet, which is easier to follow and puts you in a natural caloric deficit without all of the sufferings. While there is no magic pill to fix your root cause issues, coming to terms with that and putting the work into figuring out your personal weight loss code can have a game-changing effect on your overall health. Are you ready to get to the bottom of your stubborn weight gain and weight loss resistance? Share which of Karen’s tips you are going to implement to discover your personal weight loss code with me in the comments section of the episode page. Quotes: “There are so many women that are going through what I am going through. And everybody looks at them like ‘well you are not working out hard enough, you are not eating perfect enough, you are not calorie counting’. And I was like, that is the worst advice for somebody like myself and what I was going through.” (10:55) “When women start to get to this stage in their life, this perimenopausal stage in their late 30’s and early 40’s, you really need to start looking at it from this very holistic point of view.” (16:51) “We know that fasting is really hard on your adrenals. So here we have this society of overly stressed-out women who are then fasting all day long and eating a low carb diet, and many of them with undiagnosed hypothyroidism. And that low carb stress, because fasting is stress, is just putting fuel to the fire. And women are really wrecking their metabolisms when they overdo this.” (22:13) “You can use these diets as a therapeutic tool to help you reverse the insulin resistance and help you bring down that inflammation, but then as soon as possible you want to be bringing back in a lot of those good carbohydrates that are still promoting lower inflammation.” (32:04) “The sooner you come to terms with the fact that there is no quick fix, and the more you can really start to dig into what your weight loss code is and taking the time and having patience with yourself to try these different things you will figure out what is going to work for your body.” (34:14) In This Episode How to deal with weight loss resistance in perimenopause and beyond (15:04) Things that you can do to mitigate dropping estrogen levels and hormonal imbalance (17:35) Why the fad diet you think may be good for you is actually ruining your metabolism (21:21) The importance of eating to your cycle to find your weight loss code (26:20) Why hormone testing and primal diets are the best way to understand your body (32:21) Resources Mentioned: Register for the Perimenopause and Menopause Relief Summit Karen Martel Website The Other Side of Weight Loss Podcast Follow Karen on Instagram | Facebook | Twitter | YouTube Related Episodes: Essentially You Episode #237: The Truth Behind Stubborn Weight Gain After 40 Years Old Other Resources: Check out the full show notes page Keep up with everything Dr. Mariza Follow Dr. Mariza on Facebook | Instagram | Twitter | Youtube Podcast production & marketing support by the team at Counterweight Creative

While so many are hitting the ‘pandemic wall’ these days, I want to bring you all some joy today by sharing my interview with just an amazing individual who I met a few years ago, and whose beliefs and approach so closely align with my own. Sara Dean, creator and host of the Shameless Mom Academy Podcast, has a passion for helping women own their space, and is on a mission to inspire women, and moms in particular, to live bigger, bolder, and braver everyday. Through her various platforms, Sara motivates and inspires women to stop shrinking and start shining in every aspect of their lives (sound familiar?), and today she joins me to talk about her remarkable life and work. She starts by updating us on how she is doing these days, and then relates the story of her journey through her businesses to where she is now, and what she will be carrying forward into this new year. Along the way, she discusses how her core values and her goals in helping women have shaped and shifted her business, the impact of women leaving the workforce during the pandemic and her hope for them to start their own businesses, and the struggles she finds most common among her clients. We’ll also explore the most significant steps she took in taking up space, how she has changed over the years, and our Enneagram results and the role they can play in our lives. I know that you will agree with me that Sara Dean is one freaking awesome badass who is paving her own way and doing amazing things to help women to really find their power – precisely what we all need as we put 2020 behind us and move through this ‘ultramarathon’ together. It’s still not too late to join our 30-Day Gratitude Challenge at my Goal-Getter's Club. Even though we’ve passed the January 1, 2021, start date, you are more than welcome to join at any time during the month – you’ll be glad you did! The Finer Details of This Episode: How Sara is doing right now Her journey in business The major shift in her business Helping women find their power The biggest struggles for her clients right now Moms leaving the workforce The impact that women make in business boardrooms Women starting their own businesses The power of having a coach Sara’s biggest/scariest steps in taking up space What she was like growing up Sara and Kelly’s Enneagram results What Sara will carry forward from 2020 Quotes: “There’s a future for all of us – we can do this!” “Then I became, like, this accidental entrepreneur.” “Oh, crap! I built a business that is no longer in alignment with my core values.” “I decided to start, kind of, reframing how I sold these programs…I took out any messaging about shrinking your body.” “If we move in alignment with our values and our beliefs and who we are, typically, we’re confronted with the hardest decisions.” “If you are a mom, like, you could negotiate a Middle Eastern Peace Treaty in your sleep if you have, like, a two-year-old and a five-year-old, because that’s all you do all day.” “Women tend to, just automatically, take on all the extra, and there’s a lot of extra right now…a need comes in and we just add it to the plate.” “I do think we’re going to see a huge surge in women starting their own businesses.” “There’s just a different level of awareness and conscientiousness that women bring to the table, and moms especially bring to the table.” “You’re actually doing harm by not going all in on this…get over yourself and grow the thing. “It’s like being invited into someone else’s living room.” “Part of growing a team is finding people who have strengths that are different than yours.” “I feel like 2020 has proven over and over again the things that we can do that we think we can’t do.” “I want to be one of those people that kept going, and even though it was ugly and imperfect and it made less money…I want to be in that camp just to prove that I can do it.” “Now I kind of think about it as an ultramarathon.” “Be the person who gives yourself permission to get back up.” Show Links: Join my free FB group (and this month’s gratitude challenge) at Goal-Getter's Club Shameless Mom Academy Podcast Shameless Mom Community Shameless Mom Newsletter Burnout book link

Turning down opportunities can sometimes be a good thing for you and your business. It’s not easy to say no to jobs and money. Yet, strategically doing so opens up doors to what you actually want to do. Today’s guests have successfully built their studio around this idea. Key Takeaways It’s natural to want to branch out your business into many fields. However, this will dilute your talent and energy. Instead, create a narrow focus on where your skills and passions intersect. About Joshua Martin Studios Joshua Martin Studios is a small production company based in the United States. It is co-run by founder Joshua Martin and business partner Cody Wales who focus on telling stories of the human condition. Lessons of Starting a New Studio From the very start, Joshua and Cody knew what type of studio they wanted to run. However, like any new small business, they had debts to pay. They tell how they learned very quickly to leave their egos behind and take the work they needed to get their business off the ground. While they feel driven as creatives to keep doing more and more, they realize that success in business means narrowing your focus and skills to excel at something in particular. Asking For the Impossible Now that they are working towards a clear vision for their studio, Joshua and Cody are able to take just the jobs they want. As a result, both they and their clients truly appreciate the videos that they make. A large part of their strategy involves asking for what they want and seeing what they can get from brands they want to work with. When the worst that can happen is getting no for an answer, these low-risk high-reward ventures have the potential to lead to great opportunities that otherwise would not happen. How have you narrowed your focus as you grow your business? What impossibilities would you like to ask for? Leave a comment on the episode page! I think people might be surprised. You should not have an expectation that they’re going to say yes. That’s the key.” [32:28] “Whatever it is you’re going to go do, make sure you’re in the position to be very appealing to them. It’s not like always throwing a ‘hey, can we do this?’ out of nowhere. After having seven episodes of psychosis and Bipolar I over the course of five years, Zahava List finally got through five years without a single episode. During those five years, she started an organization called Chazkeinu, which offers a support group to Jewish women and their families who are dealing with mental illness. Prior to her most recent manic episode, Zahava was scheduled to be a returning guest of the show, but the most severe manic episode of her life delayed plans. While manic, she made unsafe decisions that led her to seek hospitalization, and attempted to act on suicidal thoughts for the first time while in the hospital. Although she was absent from partaking of the Rosh Hashanah Holiday with her family, she had a strong support system, and her loved ones support her unconditionally, love her and believed she could heal. She did not have complete success with medication and therapy and underwent electric convulsion therapy. Zahava’s children were aware of and dealt with her manic episode. She speaks with them about her illness in casual conversation in their house. It’s not hush-hush; it’s not a mystery to them; they are not feeling frightened, alone, and unsure about it because their parents have explained it at their age level and do not try to keep it a secret. Zahava knows there is hope for her to heal from her most recent bout of illness, get her memory back, and to continue making an impact in the lives of women struggling with mental illness and their families. As we all know, sharing can help others. We are here to support each other and to learn from each other. In mental health, Together is better. If You Want To Best Prepare for Your 4th Trimester You Should: Map out your support before giving birth to make sure you will have the village you need to raise your child Give yourself space to care for yourself and set aside time that is just for you Nourish your body with the right foods and supplements to support your hormones Be prepared and listen to your body to know when you are ready to resume normal life after giving birth No matter how many books you read, courses you take, conversations you have, or advice you have been given, having a baby, especially for the first time, can bring moments of uncertainty, exhaustion, and bliss. Navigating your new body, and your new baby, can be a significant adjustment, but it is possible to take on this beautiful time with ease and grace. Understanding Your 4th Trimemester with Dr. Cleopatra Kamperveen Dr. Cleopatra is The Fertility Strategist and Executive Director of the Fertility & Pregnancy Institute and is back for round two of our pregnancy discussion. Dr. Cleopatra is an expert when it comes to the two phases of pregnancy that are often ignored by society, the primemester, and the 4th trimester. Today Dr. Cleopatra is here to paint a picture of what life looks like postpartum so that we can be prepared with as much knowledge as possible before bringing our super babies into the world. Always Be Prepared The transitional period between birth and the first 12 weeks postpartum, otherwise known as the 4th trimester, can be physically and mentally draining for mama and for the baby. While there is no way to fully prepare for what to come, it is crucial that you put a plan into place before your baby arrives so that you can be prepared for what is to come and plan accordingly. Mapping out your support, setting aside your time, and nourishing your body with the right foods and supplements can have a huge impact on your ability to transmit health from one generation to the next. By taking care of yourself and your baby, you can face this new period of discovery with ease and grace. The Love Cocoon Taking care of a new baby and yourself is full-time work. While it is important to be realistic about what you are both going to need, it is not all doom and gloom. Knowing your limitations, asking for help, and finding connections are all incredible ways to focus on keeping you and your baby healthy and happy. The 4th trimester can be treated as a love cocoon, but you need to be real and honest with your experiences to your support group to be able to enjoy this magical time. Are you about to welcome your own bundle of joy? In what ways are you preparing for your 4th trimester? Let me know in the comments section of the episode page. Quotes: “There is no way for a mom to be well in the 4th trimester if her baby isn't growing beautifully. And similarly, it's much easier for a baby to be growing beautifully and adjusting to the outside world when mama is doing awesome and feeling supported.” (9:23) “If you are feeling off, I want you to make sure that you seek help and you get the help that you need.” (22:38) “Anytime you incorporate some bioidenticals or natural sources of hormones that you want to know that it has the potential to impact that balance that can impact your milk production. It doesn’t mean it will, but pay attention to it.” (29:25) “As much as possible, get this information and get this plan in place during your pregnancy. Don’t rely on the fact that its going to be easy for you to do that during the 4th trimester because it is actually going to be more challenging.” (33:56) “If you are cleared and you don’t feel like you can exercise yet, that you can have sex yet, that you can go back to work yet, then I really really hope that you are able to not do those things until you want to do them.” (37:35) In This Episode How to navigate your fourth trimester with or without the right type of support (8:07) Tips for supporting your hormone levels once you have delivered your baby (18:23) The huge role your support system can play in your postpartum depression (22:09) Which foods and supplements you should take to stay healthy physically and mentally in your fourth trimester (26:30) Why it is okay to listen to your body over your doctor when it comes to getting back to ‘normal’ after giving birth (34:00) Resources Mentioned: The Fertility & Pregnancy Institute Website The Ultimate Fertility Checklist Related Episodes: Episode 242: How to Eat and Supplements During Pregnancy to the Health of Mama and Baby with Dr. Cleopatra Kamperveen Other Resources: Check out the full show notes page Keep up with everything Dr. Mariza Follow Dr. Mariza on Facebook | Instagram | Twitter | Youtube Podcast production & marketing support by the team at Counterweight Creative

Today, Ellen Gardner and Philip De Souza, Communications and Marketing at HIROC, speak with Dr. Ronald Cohn, President and CEO of the Hospital for Sick Children. Early in his medical career, Dr. Ronald Cohn was on a tourist bus in Toronto and as it drove up University Avenue and by SickKids Hospital he told his wife, that’s one of the world’s leading children’s hospitals and I will probably never work there. Proving that life doesn’t go where you predict, in 2012 Dr. Cohn accepted a position as Chief of the Division of Clinical and Metabolic Genetics, Co-Director of the Centre for Genetic Medicine, and Senior Scientist at the SickKids Research Institute. Even as he leads the hospital, staying true to his identity as a physician and a scientist is essential for Dr. Cohn, who still sees patients and is very active in the lab that bears his name. Most recently, his laboratory started to investigate the application of a new genome editing technology, CRISPR/Cas9 that holds the promise of correcting genetic abnormalities that lead to muscular dystrophy. Today he is guiding the hospital in a new strategic direction called Precision Child Health. The campaign is built around the concept of individualized care tailored to each patient’s unique characteristics, from their genetic code to their postal code. Quotes “There is an aura in our institution of the people who love working here. That is true for every single person who works here.” – RC “Moving forward, under the concept of “SickKids care anytime, anywhere”, we will hopefully have monitoring opportunities of children at home that would help us reduce the time they have to actually stay in the hospital.” – RC “I had a lab meeting and asked the small group assembled – look at this exciting research. I want us to drop everything we’re doing right now. Are you willing to go with me on a journey trying to use this technology as a way to identify new therapeutics for muscular dystrophy?” – RC “(With Precision Child Health) we’re trying to look at the very broad data set and then leverage the technology in order to think about prediction as well as prevention.” – RC “It’s a difficult journey, a journey that will never end. But I’m glad we made it (diversity, equity and inclusion) a pillar of our strategic plan and we have full support from literally everyone at the executive level and director level to bring some real change.” “There are always opportunities for change. I think leaders need to see them, identify them and you need to help implement them.” – RC “My wife said it best: you put on a suit, it fit you and you just ran with it.” “I can tell you that one of the best decisions of my life was to move here, and it was a difficult one.” – RC Mentioned in this Episode: The Hospital for Sick Children Johns Hopkins University Precision Child Health Dr. Indra Narang CRISPR/Cas9 Access More Interviews with Healthcare Leaders at HIROC.com/podcast Follow us on Twitter, and listen on iTunes. In continuation of Part 1 of this episode, we are joined again with Miri Grunhaus & Fally Klein, who share with us their wisdom, insight and experience in the journey of mental health, and healing with gold. If you have not yet heard Part 1 of this episode, please listen to it here, before listening to this episode. In this stunning interview with personal friends and collaborators Fally Klein, a women’s empowerment facilitator, and Miri Grunhaus, a fashion designer with purpose, we gain a newfound understanding of healing. Both women have experienced tremendous pain in their lives, but it is what they learned from their pain that gave them purpose, and ultimately brought them together. If we learn to sit with our pain rather than shy away from it, they share, we can catapult ourselves into lives of deeper joy and meaning than we ever thought possible. For Miri, this meant shifting from a lucrative career in graphic design to a completely new industry: fashion. Without even knowing how to sew, Miri decided to empower women to heal themselves by building a fashion line around the Japanese concept of kintsugi. Just as broken pottery is mended with gold to highlight the breaks, Miri’s choice to own her story has led to a richer, more fulfilling existence. For Fally, turning her pain into purpose has meant leading holistic healing workshops for women. Rather than trying to “fix” or numb out pain, Fally believes in diving straight into it. Within pain, there is always the potential for transformation. Fally happened to wear one of Miri’s kintsugi dresses to one of her workshops – the first in a long list of coincidences that brought these women together to do the work they are meant to be doing. Today’s episode will renew your belief in magic: the authentic kind of magic that happens when we choose to embrace what life gives us and own our story. As we all know, sharing can help others. We are here to support each other and to learn from each other. In mental health, Together is better. As we enter the holiday season, Matana rediscovers her year, recounting the blessing of having experienced a year devoted to gratitude. She highlights how she chose to be in the moments that are phenomenal, chose to highlight the gratitude moments and chose to live with an open, grateful heart. She shares how we can all invite miracles to our lives by focusing on the constant practice of gratitude, and coming to peace with things that didn’t go our way. A key strategy she shares is how she decided to undertake starting and ending the day with a smile, despite the challenges of that day, the hurt, pain or disappointment, and focus on gratitude, which allowed her to see miracles throughout the year. ————————————————————————— Matana introduces us to her “Gift of Light” special program, where she offers her listeners the option of working with her 1 on 1, over 8 sessions. Did you know that for every 100 men promoted or hired into a role as a first-time manager, only 72 women are promoted or hired? The imbalance is greater for women of color, with only 68 Latinas and 58 black women hired to managerial roles per 100 men. A survey conducted by Lean In and McKinsey in 2019 revealed that women are not getting hired at the same scale, promoted at the same pace, nor paid at the same rate as men. While there are many institutional reasons for this gender gap that may not be in your control, here’s something that is - taking ownership of your successes! In this episode, we share how you can demonstrate your impact, put yourself in a better position to be hired, promoted and compensated well, and stop being the best kept secret! Highlights: [00:41] Hiring statistics [01:52] Why achievements of women executives are less visible [04:08] The struggle with promoting yourself [08:44] Make your greatest hits list Quotes: “There are things known, and there are things that are unknown, and in between are the doors of perception.” – Monica Marquez “When you finish a project, you must share your results with a little self-promotion to gain the necessary visibility to advance.” – Monica Marquez “Every accomplishment builds upon the previous one and amplifies your value to the world.” – Monica Marquez “Your reputation allows other people to know how you can help them.” – Nikki Barua About Nikki Barua: Nikki Barua is a digital innovator, serial entrepreneur, author & speaker. In this episode, I’ll be speaking with Jessi Bang, who will be introducing us to some of the lesser-known gems that exist beyond Zion National Park in Southern Utah. Join Jessi and me on a tour of Southern Utah’s lesser-known hidden gems. We talk about everywhere you should go, after visiting Zion, Bryce Canyon, and the Wave! About Jessi Bang Visit Jessi’s Blog – The Rambling Raccoon Jessi Bang is a blogger, adventure-lover, and dog mom, based in beautiful Southern Utah. She’s known for encouraging people to get outside and experience the beauty around us! She’s an avid hiker, outdoor lover, and traveler! If you’re looking for some fantastic places to hike in Southern Utah, be sure to check out her blog and social media channels at The Rambling Raccoon! She always outlines all the details you need to get the best experience possible. What We Cover in This Episode A mountain that draws people to the area. The best time of year to visit southern Utah. Hidden gems beyond Zion National Park and Bryce Canyon National Park. The best place to stay near Zion National Park. A beautiful art garden in the area. The most underrated State Park in Southern Utah, complete with slot canyons and petrified dunes! The best southern Utah picture spots. A beautiful photo spot perfect for toddlers. A gas station where you can find the best healthy food in the area. What you should know about droning etiquette. How to go about hiking into a dormant volcano in southern Utah. Where to find the best sushi in St. George. How to find the one nightlife spot in St. George. Everything you need to know about obtaining and drinking alcohol in Utah. One VERY POPULAR southern Utah adventure that’s worth skipping, and where you could go instead, to get an even BETTER experience. And what you should know about Leave No Trace etiquette and not being a “trash human”. Quotes There’s a huge red mountain that’s literally called Red Mountain, that I live underneath, and I was just drawn to this mountain. I came to visit my parents, and I cried the whole way home to Vegas because I didn’t want to go back. I just felt like I was supposed to be here. And it’s kind of crazy because I’ve talked to quite a few people who’ve had the same experience. There’s just some type of energy I can’t explain in these red rocks, and I just, I love it. I think most people that come visit the area go to Zion, maybe Bryce Canyon. There’s a few places that are very popular, and they’re popular for a reason because they’re beautiful. I just think it’s really important to showcase the other places most people don’t really know about because they’re hidden gems, and they’re amazing. Just disclaimer: If you go to any place I tell you to go to, just don’t be a trash human because I just can’t handle it. Don’t ruin these spots for everyone. …Don’t be a garbage human. Don’t carve on rocks. Don’t spray on rocks. Don’t leave trash. Just go, take pictures, leave footprints, and leave it for everybody else to enjoy. Come visit. Come explore. It’s gorgeous. It’s breathtaking. And no matter how many times I even see the same place, I still am just in awe when I’m sitting there and looking at these views. And it’s just, it’s a magical place. It’s beautiful. And I truly do believe that being outside is the best therapy in the world, especially with what’s going on in the world right now. Just get outside. Get outside, get fresh air, hike, enjoy views. Just be. That’s the best part about Southern Utah. If You Want to Gain More Energy You Should: Lower your stress response to allow your body to make the right amount of cortisol for you Build muscle through resistance training in order to manage your glucose intake Stress your mitochondria consistently and in the right ways in order to balance your hormone production Implement simple and effective lifestyle changes to improve your mitochondrial function and cortisol production Do you dread having to drag yourself out of bed in the morning, knowing that you might not have enough energy to get through the day? The two biggest causes for this lack of energy is inefficient mitochondrial function and the hormone cortisol. The good news is that there are simple lifestyle changes and tools that are easy, inexpensive, and possible to do from home that can balance your cortisol and improve your mitochondrial function. Connecting the Dots With Dr. Carrie Jones Dr. Carrie Jones is a practitioner, internationally recognized speaker, consultant, and educator in all things women’s health and hormones and a fellow mitochondria nerd. Dr. Carrie is the medical direction for Precision Analytical, the creators of the DUTCH hormone test, my hands down favorite test for understanding what is going on with your hormones. Cortisol Is the Key Connecting the dots between your mitochondrial function, cortisol production, stress, sleep, and glucose can help you understand what is going on in your body so that you can relieve your symptoms and start harnessing the energy you need to get through your busy day. It is no secret that everything happening within your body affects one another. The #1 role of cortisol is to manage your glucose and help you wake up in the morning through the cortisol awakening response. You need to get out of the negative cortisol feedback loop and increase your cortisol production by feeding the mitochondria what it needs to work the right way. Happy Mitochondria = Happy Women Happy mitochondria equal happy women, and happy women make the world go round. Improve your mitochondrial happiness comes down to consistency in how you stress your mitochondria in the right ways. Things such as building muscle with resistance training, improving your posture, and getting a good night's sleep are all simple and easy ways to heal what is going on with your hormones and give you back the energy you crave. Are you ready to take back control of your energy by improving your mitochondrial function and cortisol production? Share how you are getting a grip on what is happening with your hormones in the comments section of the episode page. Quotes: “There are women who are like ‘im sensitive to everything, I react to everything’ and these little shifts in stress and sleep or diet or the covid-19 weight gain, it affects them. It affects your hormones.” (17:36) “Cortisol does a lot. But like Goldilocks, too much is a problem, and too little is a problem. We want it just right.” (19:52) “It's the cortisol with the glucose with the insulin that has changed lately, and as a result, you have to shift with it. You have to shift with it in the type of exercise that you do and how you manage stress. Otherwise, you will end up like the ‘too little’ Goldilocks.” (26:29) “It doesn't have to be really huge, expensive and complicated. It can be pretty straight forward and easy which is what I love about the mitochondria.” (33:43) “I hate when women just run out and take iron, I hate when women just run out and take copper. Because you can overdose on those things and it can be problematic so you want to be really careful of randomly just going online or running to your store and buying stuff.” (39:34) In This Episode Understanding the hormone pathways that are impacting your energy, period, and more (13:10) How cortisol can interrupt your natural rhythms and your energy supply (18:37) Simple and inexpensive ways that you can make your mitochondria happier (30:30) Connecting the dots between your mitochondrial health and your energy levels (35:22) The best way to understand your fatigue and test your hormones and mitochondrial health markers (44:24) Resources Mentioned: Dr. Mariza’s Green Smoothie Recipe Guide Precision Analytical DUTCH Hormone Test – Use Code dutch50 for $50 off the DUTCH Complete or DUTCH Plus Tests Dutch Test Website Follow Dr. Carrie on Instagram Related Episodes: Episode 120: Is Your Doctor Using The Correct Hormone Test… Or Not? Leaving home for an alien environment was jarring, but it taught her resilience and resourcefulness, gave her lifelong relationships, and introduced her to different cultures. Groups you were born into and belonged to: Lyndelle’s ancestors on her father’s side of the family were the pioneers of the fishing industry in her hometown in Australia, and she was raised with pride in her family’s entrepreneurial spirit. She claims that her career as a businesswoman was a “natural evolution” from that history. Her curiosity about the bigger questions in life was piqued by the religiosity on her mother’s side of the family. It inspired her to think freely and find her own path and answers instead of settling for others’ beliefs or having them imposed on her. Temperament and personality influencesLyndelle is a true-blue Aries, and is therefore a natural leader, but can also be impatient and stubborn. However, she has evolved her traits to make them workable in her life and works on her communication skills to complement her leadership skills. A time I became aware that my way of doing things was cultural and specific to my cultural experienceWhen Lyndelle moved to London from Australia, she dove deep into self-development to help her move out of the entertainment industry. When she reconnected with her old friends, former groups, or even her family members, she was shocked by the difference of opinion. Advice to an employer to work with meLyndelle believes that “how people should be communicating to me is exactly how I communicate to them”. More great insights from our guest! Lyndelle coaches entrepreneurs and business owners to create passion and ‘daily greatness’ in building and scaling their businesses.

Description: Sylvia Guinan is a financial professional with a specialty and passion for helping women find hope and stability throughout the rough road of divorce. She is also the author of the new book, The Richness of Divorce. Sylvia joins me this week to share our own personal stories with divorce, how we can find hope in a dark time, and why she is so drawn to helping women process the pain and make plans for the future. What You Will Hear in This Episode: Divorce can be a challenging and traumatic time, emotionally, physically, and financially. It may seem like a horrible end to something, but Sylvia invites her clients (and all women) to see it as a new beginning, whether or not the divorce was their choice. Sylvia’s new book, The Richness of Divorce, provides a supportive tool and framework to navigate divorce with love and grace, welcoming the new chapter of life while still taking the space to honor your emotions. The seven steps in the book are based in alignment with the seven chakras, which hold a huge amount of energy and also can result in symptoms when we are blocked. In the divorce process, it is crucial to set yourself up with a great team, so everyone is there for the common goal of helping you. The more we can speak up about our own struggles, the more it gives other women to feel less alone and more supported. And then there are some people who do get a second chance, and they take it. And I want to help more people take their chances without even having to be on death’s door.” (5:30) “To eat real, whole, natural, sustainable food, is actually revolutionary. It actually takes being radical and transforming the norms. Because our convenience foods, our fast foods, our school foods, our hospital foods, are all serving what quite frankly is food-like substances.” (11:10) “Wherever you stand and whatever your health history is it's going to have an impact on what’s right for you. But broadly speaking, in the broad terms of things, we can see that eating a diet that is based around more plants and more whole foods is going to be beneficial for the vast majority of humanity.” (22:02) “I think love is a great place to start. Because when we love, we have a reason to live. And when we have a reason to live, then suddenly we care for ourselves, and we care for our loved ones, and we care for life.” (28:24) “Everybody deserves love, that’s the bottom line. And with food is a wonderful place to express that, because everybody eats. And so I get the beautiful opportunity in my work to share about healthy eating with everybody.”(32:37) “I want to see a world where food is taken seriously, where the food industry takes health seriously, and where science guides the choices that people are encouraged to make around food, not industry profits.” (43:17) Links Food Revolution Network Website Diet for a New America by John Robbins Find the full show notes for this episode here Keep up with all things Love Is Medicine Follow Razi on Facebook | Instagram

Using your greatest pain to cast a bigger purpose In this week’s episode I introduce you to a man whose gruff tattooed appearance contradicts his soft-spoken words of wisdom, power, and strength—his name is Stefanos Sifandos. We dig deep into Stefanos’ childhood, the implications of parenting and generational trauma on how we express ourselves in relationships at work and at home, and how to foster and grow in each kind. We talk about what it takes to be willing and open to break the cycle of wounding behavior, how to commit to change, transition, and FEELING in order to pay it forward and leave behind the impact and legacy you truly want. In this episode, we deeply analyze the impact of environment and family patterns on our idea of safety, and how we project those habits to the world. We talk about Stefanos’ volatile family life, the emotional and physical abuse, and the behaviors he grew to deem as normal—omission, lying, anger, and unfaithfulness. Stefanos opens up about how he reproduced these actions as a means of comfort, repeating what he knew as familiar in order to protect and defend himself from feeling and being vulnerable. Willingness to change, to internally transform We discuss the turning point in Stefanos life—the moment he knew he needed to make a change and move away from the self-loathing, dishonest, and aggressive entrenched patterns he had been repeating. He shares the depth of the work, the years, the willingness to feel through repressed pain and memories he had forgotten in order to become self-aware and in tune with his true self. Liberation from generational trauma We talk about his relationships in love, how they evolved as he explored his past, and his relationship today with his wife. He shares advice for women and men on different ways to start the work, what that can look like, and how to be willing to do it. He describes the sense of freedom and liberation he felt the moment he started internally transitioning himself. To truly serve and be with another, he emphasizes the necessity for both people to work on themselves, to stop perpetuating wounded behavior, to open your heart to compassion, and shares what it takes to honor the needs of another without feeling threatened. Stefanos Sifandos Stefanos understands there is a difference between culturally defined masculinity and sacred masculinity. He further explores what it means to be a GOOD man and to be GOOD at being a man in today’s world. By restructuring and reframing his own masculinity and movement through the world as a man relating to himself, his environment, women, and his purpose, he has discovered and created methodologies and innovative models for navigating the often-difficult path of contemporary manhood and intimate relationships. Stefanos places his focus and energy towards evolving the nature of relationships in contemporary times. An advocate and proponent of "sacred union", Stefanos believes cultivating healthy relationships to self, ideas, others, our lovers and the Earth will liberate humanity towards a new empowered expression of itself.Quotes:There was no more space for justifying. 9:30 stefThe pain and intensity of what I was experiencing was so incredible, so confronting, that I didn’t really have a choice to numb it any more, I couldn't, I couldn't undue or outsee what I had done to myself. 10:40 - StefHoly shit im about to repeat history if i don’t repair this -12:15 tracy It's not so much what our human nature is but what do we want our human potential to be. 14:10 stefWe get to choose what type of person we want to be. 14:25 - stefI had to go in and feel those feelings and really release them as well. 22:55 - stefForgiveness without feeling is false. 24:30 - stefThe most important part is the willingness 29:45 tracyThe wisdom was accessible to me but i wasn’t choosing to act on it - 38:45 - stefI had to feel that density to get really honest and open with her 39:35 - stefWe avoid grieving, so part of the healing process and the transition from good to great is taking time to actually feel and actually grieve 48:20 - stefWe also have to embrace the great that we are stepping into because we often focus on what were losing and focusing on the choices were making and the great can give you perspective —not losing anything just transitioning 50:00 stef

Do you ever feel like your dog “forgets” their training as soon as you leave the house? Walking your dog around the house or garden is one thing. Transitioning those skills to places outside of those areas is an entirely different story and often, the perfect recipe for disaster. After weeks or even months of practicing walking in harmony with your dog, it can be really disappointing when everything you’ve been training for goes out the window the moment you go to the park or wander too far from home. So, why does this keep happening? Why, even with a lot of training and practice, do you still struggle to walk in partnership with your dog? You’ll discover the answer on this episode of Enlightened By Dogs, where Kathy continues to share key segments from a coaching session with members of the Brilliant Partners Academy for her 3-part mini series on how to walk in partnership with your dog. In this episode, Kathy dives into why training doesn’t work in real life, what causes the difficulty in translating those skills to real life, and what you can do about it! In this episode: Why it seems like your training is forgotten in real life Why you shouldn’t get lost in your thoughts Why walking your dog in harmony is a lot like walking with a toddler What keeps you from walking in partnership with your dog (and what to do about it!) Episode 42 Nine People’s Favorite Thing In this episode, Tricia expresses concern over her ability to keep her daily to-do list organized (which didn’t seem to be a problem in the pre-COVID days of her life). This prompts a brief discussion about just what are the best ways to stay organized, get things done, and not get bogged down in the processes? Well, they aren’t quite sure in this episode—but do feel a determination to get their post-COVID lives organized and up to speed again. Tricia shares the story of the time in college when she was required to take a Physical Education class, signed up to take a racquetball course, somehow forgetting about her depth perception issues that keep her from every hitting virtually any ball, and most assuredly, a racquet ball. Her only solution was to hide in the locker room. For most of the semester! Which is better, to aim for winning the attention and respect of 90% of your audience, or 10%? Rob offers an answer—and explains the reasoning behind it. In their careers at Disney World, Rob and his wife Kate perform in some venues that are designed to simply be a fun experience, not necessarily offering the most amazing and impressive acting or choreography you’ve ever seen in your life. However, Disney also offers a few shows where the goal is to please and truly impress the 10% who will truly appreciate and never forget it—not the 90% who simply thought it was “good.” Rob explains the validity of both purposes. There has been so much negativity surrounding Black Men in the media lately, so Dr. Venus wanted to take this episode to celebrate and honor the Black Men that love us. When we commit to healing and uniting, we will be one step closer to slaying White Supremacy. Dr. Venus discusses the top three reasons Black Men rose to middle and upper class from 1960 to 2016, how we can set up personal boundaries to show up in power and not take the actions of others personally, and the real conversations we must have for peace, prosperity, and partnerships with the Black Men who we love, and who love us back. Key Takeaways: [9:08] Between 1960 and 2016, Black Men made great headway into the middle and upper class. The three top reasons that helped them move up were: education, work, and marriage. (Source: Decennial census 1960-2000 and American Community Surveys 2010,2016 (IPUMS)) [15:20] This conversation is not coaching for just romantic relationships, but instead open to all the Black Men that love us as friends, brothers, cousins, sons, and beyond. [19:54] We expect Black Men to invest in us purely based on gender dynamics, but we must take a hard look at our expectations and what it looks like to really be loved and protected by Black Men. [23:13] When Black Men feel disrespected or challenged, the triggers, tripwires, and unspoken emotional debit accounts can become activated. This can then look like someone leaving, lashing out, removing themselves or punitive damage. Black Women are left feeling hurt and confused, while the Black Man feels as though he is being talked down to. [30:47] Society has created a cycle for men to keep going and never have critical conversations to heal the wound. To really love the Black Men in your life is to have awareness and not let your expectations get in the way. [32:09] Nurture and invest in the relationships with the Black Men who have the emotional maturity to feed you in your life. If they demonstrate they don’t have it, don’t get mad at them, but instead realize it is a historical wound and not something for you to take personally. [41:02] If someone chooses to act out or leave, their actions are for them, not for you. Your connection to yourself and source energy is what will truly heal you and make you feel your best. Quotes: “There is a historical wound for Black Men because of the history of slavery in North America that has never been tended to or healed.” “When you are contending with triggers, tripwires, and internal emotional debit accounts, you have to take on personal accountability for yourself, not for him.” “I’ve had people say bad things to me on a regular basis, and I’m clear that when they say it they are not talking to me, they are talking to a historical idea I represent.” “If someone says they are leaving, let them go.” “You can spit your truth and live it and never have an agreement.” Mentioned: Dr. Venus Website | Facebook | Twitter | Instagram “Hot Mess Millionaire” Amazon Series Free Gift When You Join The Truth Tribe The Black Woman Millionaire Hot Mess Edition Join the conversation! What would you choose to do if you had to completely shift your life? Would you focus on your true calling? All too often our jobs get in the way of our dreams. This is a shame because what you do for work has all the potential to align with your higher calling. But it’s up to you to intentionally create this. Today, I’m thrilled to be joined by Ira Davis, one of the original Studio Sherpas students. As a former Marine Corps drill instructor, the founder and CEO of DreamDiver and IV I II Studios, Ira works to help people discover their stories and inspire others. His companies are designed to help aspiring pioneers, visionaries, and world-changers discover their purpose and dive into their dreams to impact the world. As filmmakers, we are uniquely positioned to share our vision with the world. At the same time, we often get sidetracked creating for others. There’s nothing inherently wrong with this. We all have to earn an income and keep our businesses running. However, ignoring your own visions means that you risk sharing with the world with your own special vision and genius. Ira passionately explains what happens when you create from the soul, rather than from some material need. If you commit to this, you’ll find that your work resonates deeper with the right audiences. It will lead to more fulfilling opportunities down the road. Throughout this conversation, we reevaluate what success means. Being able to put food on the table is one type. So is fulfilling the mission that you feel called to do. Ira explains how these two don’t need to be exclusive of each other. Turning your dream into a livelihood isn’t easy, but the rewards are beyond priceless What is your dream? How can you take your business there? Let’s chat in the comments on the episode page! In this episode Deciding how you truly want to show up with your lens Balancing the needs of making money with fulfilling your dream vision Having bigger dreams for yourself and your video business Recognizing that income stops your impact Why inspiration is more powerful than motivation What happens when you build your company on a dream that’s bigger than yourself Quotes “There’s never been a better time in the history of our lives where we have the time to stop moving at one hundred miles an hour to focus on who we have been called to be and what we have been called to do and create.” [3:05] “If you get the opportunity to do this, you are playing the infinite game. The finite game is money. The infinite game is transforming and moving people’s hearts and souls. Now, and even after I’m dead, will this thing live on?” [18:55] “When you dream bigger than yourself, it will attract people who want to join you and push it to the stratosphere.” [23:59] “Just because you have the purpose to create great content, doesn't mean that you’re the content creator.” [40:59] “A person without a dream is a person without direction for their life. We’re living in a low testosterone epidemic. Yet boosting testosterone is one way of increasing longevity. Today’s guest is an expert on this topic. He’ll tell you the most important steps that men can take to optimize their health and boost their testosterone levels. Dr. Tracy Gapin is a board-certified urologist, world-renowned men’s health and performance expert, professional speaker and author. He has over 20 experience providing Fortune 500 executives, entrepreneurs, and athletes a personalized health plan. Dr. Gapin combines his compassion and extensive experience with men’s health care and cutting-edge technology to offer patients individualized, state-of-the-art care. Low testosterone affects every aspect of men’s health. It leads to drops in energy, mental acuity, bone density, and nutritional health. With this hormone being such a key piece of the puzzle, Dr. Gapin made it his mission to address the root causes of its decline. Dr. Gapin has seen how environmental impacts disrupt hormone production. Endocrine disruptors are everywhere these days. Plastics, personal care products, and more contain phthalates that disrupt proper hormone production. Since everyone’s genetic blueprint is unique, we all respond to our environment differently. Using data and the latest technology, Dr. Gapin helps his patients make informed decisions to address the root cause, not just symptoms. Sleep and epigenetics, being a central part of hormonal health, Dr. Gapin makes these a focus of his practice. What can you do to avoid phthalates in your environments and get better sleep? Let’s chat about it in the comments on the episode page! My Your Longevity Blueprint course is currently 50% off to celebrate the launch of the podcast PLUS I'm throwing in a free personalized consultation!
