The Elmendorf Heritage and Railroad Museum added a new railroad car to its collection May 29, after the arrival of a 1977 Union Pacific Railroad caboose. According to San Antonio Railroad Heritage Museum President Gary Rodriguez, the caboose was retired and donated in the early 1990s to the city of Brazoria, where it stayed for three decades before ending up in private hands in Cresson, southwest of Fort Worth. The caboose was donated to the museum; however, transporting it to Elmendorf cost ,700, funded by a loan from a museum member.Article Link

SARHM President Gary Rodriguez of Elmendorf, who announced the land acquisition Dec. 15, said the space will enable the museum to build an operational railroad track, as well as provide more space for the museum's...Article Link

About UsThe Martin & Frances Lehnis Railroad Museum became a reality in 2007, as a result of several years' work done by people both in Brownwood and in the railroad community. Martin & Frances Lehnis had a farm east of Early, Texas for many years, where they raised their son and collected thousands of railroad artifacts. Martin ("Buster") had worked for the Santa Fe railroad just 2 months shy of 50 years. Upon his retirement, he switched from full-scale railroading to model railroading. Martin & Frances even went so far as to build their own 7 1/2" gauge railroad on their farm, giving rides to kids over the years. As they grew older, they began planning out what to do with their massive collection of historic railroad artifacts- including a 1931 Santa Fe Caboose, 1929 Pullman Superintendent's Car, and Kress Depot. The railroad community feared the collection would be sent all over the country. William Osborn an attorney in Austin, a rail fan and collector, helped the Lehnises form a contract with the City of Brownwood. The donated collection would help in establishing a transportation museum. Unfortunately, Frances passed in November 2004 and Martin shortly after in February 2005; neither of them ever saw the completion of the museum. TXDOT approved a grant to build the museum and the City of Brownwood supplied the matching funds. After the contract was completed, Mary Irving, Curator of the Temple Railroad & Heritage Museum, worked on the Lehnis collection for three years. She was then hired on at the newly built Martin & Frances Lehnis Railroad Museum as the full time Curator. After several months of preparation of exhibits, the museum opened its doors to the public on September 14, 2007 during Brownwood's Reunion Celebration. The museum's exhibits are a result of the City of Brownwood's support, the amazing talents of volunteers from all over the country, and donations from members of our community. The museum continues to grow and flourish from the efforts of so many, and is truly a museum that volunteers built. MissionThe mission of the Martin & Frances Lehnis Railroad Museum is to collect, preserve, exhibit, and educate the public about the role of Brownwood, Texas in the railroad history of Texas and that of the American Southwest. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/loren-alberts/message

The town of Chatham, Illinois has preserved their Chicago and Alton depot. The depot sits next to the Amtrak/UP line that runs from Chicago to St. Louis. The line is getting an upgrade to 110 mph for the higher speed program. The museum is a great example of what can be done, when like minded people come together and preserve history.

Today, we're going to share a few reasons why people really enjoy living in the Roseville and Sacramento region. We've put together a list of the top 4 reasons why our area is a great place to live! Let's dive right in:1. Location: In one direction, we are only 2 hours from Lake Tahoe. In the other direction, we are only 2 hours from San Francisco! Tahoe is one of the most beautiful lakes in the world. Located high in the Sierra Mountains, the Lake Tahoe area has world-class skiing, camping, fishing, boating, and sailing, among many other activities. San Francisco: If you go the other direction, you can expose yourself to the cultural vibrancy of the Bay Area. Drive across the beautiful Golden Gate Bridge and experience the many cultural and historical landmarks this great city has to offer! 2. Recreation: Within a 30-minute drive from the Roseville/Sacramento area, there are numerous recreation options. Folsom Lake is within 10 minutes of our office. It's a great place to fish, water-ski, sail, or just enjoy the many trails around the lake.American River Bike Trail features over 30 miles of bike trails that run from Folsom Lake to Old Town Sacramento. It runs along the American River, so you can enjoy incredible views and wildlife on your journey.Sacramento River is a great place to enjoy boating, fishing, or spending an evening at one of the many restaurants overlooking the scenery of the river. Mountain and road cycling are also available. 3. History and Culture: There's no shortage of culture and history in the area! The Gold Rush of 1849 started right here in the Sacramento area, and it has left behind many old mining towns in its wake. Some of these mining towns have sprouted up into major cities, such as Folsom, Sacramento, and Auburn. Many of these areas have original boardwalks you can walk along and see some of the original structures that were built in the gold rush days. The Transcontinental Railroad started here in Sacramento, not in San Francisco as most people think.Arts: We have the Crocker Art Museum, the Railroad Museum, the Governor's Mansion, the Capitol Building, as well as a wide assortment of art from the local area. Shopping: The Roseville Galleria Mall is the premier shopping center in the region, and just across the street you can find the Fountain Square, a very attractive shopping mall with many interesting things to see.4. Overall Quality of Life: People love to work and play here!Affordability: Living in this wonderful area is completely affordable, especially when compared with the nearby Bay Area. You can get a nice size home, on a nice lot, with many features and amenities, and you don't have to deal with the traffic congestion you'll find in metropolitan areas.Quality education: You'll find some of the best high schools in the state of California in Placer County. There are many reasons why we think our area is one of the best places to live in California. If you have any questions about our list, or if you would like us to show you around the area, give us a call or shoot us an email. There are many benefits to setting up shop in our area, and we would love to prove it to you!

The 25th Louisiana Railroad Festival in DeQuincy, Louisiana host this week's American Passenger Rail Heritage Foundation's Let's Talk Trains program. The City of DeQuincy which observed the centennial of its incorporation in 2003, owes its existence to the railroads. The original townsite was laid out in 1896 and 1897 when the main line of the Kansas City Pittsburgh and Gulf Railroad reached here. Over the years the railroad -- the Kansas City Southern and Union Pacific Railroads -- have provided employment for several generations of DeQuincy residents and have been a mainstay of the local economy. Before the coming of the Interstate system and better roads, DeQuincy was the hub for railroad travel, with several east-west and north-south passenger trains coming through each day. The passenger trains are gone now, but the city is still important in the railroad freight industry and continues to be a “railroad town.” We invite everyone to come and help us celebrate our heritage and traditions as a railroad town; visit our beautiful Railroad Museum which was built in 1923 as the Kansas City Southern Depot, and which is recognized as one of the most attractive restored depots in the nation. Join us live in person or live in the chatroom or by calling in to the show at 646-716-7106.
