Erik Distler is responsible for overseeing AEG Sustainability, the organization's corporate sustainability program. In this capacity, he focuses on global strategies and tactics that address operational impacts and capture and measure data across key environmental metrics, such as greenhouse gas emissions, water consumption, and waste reduction. He also supports AEG's global business units in the implementation and execution of sustainability initiatives, manages external partnerships related to sustainability, facilitates the sharing of best practices, and ensures that sustainability is a source of value across the company. Distler has worked at the intersection of environmental and social responsibility in sports and entertainment for more than ten years. Before joining AEG, he built and led the sports-focused sustainability strategy and program at Nike. Prior to Nike, he was with the Green Sports Alliance where he oversaw relationships with corporate partners, live entertainment events, professional sports leagues and clubs, sports governing bodies, and collegiate schools and conferences, as well as working extensively with ESPN. He also spent time as a sustainability consultant with PwC. Distler began his career in accounting and finance, where he worked for Deloitte and The Siegfried Group LLP for the first seven years of his career. He received his Master of Public Administration (MPA) in Sustainable Management from Presidio Graduate School and his Bachelor of Science in Accounting and Finance from Iowa State University, graduating with Honors and High Distinction.. Erik Joins Sustainable Nation to Discuss: How AEG manages sustainability at large events like music festivals Piloting initiatives at smaller events to apply learnings and replicate at larger events Incorporating reusable materials at events in partnership with Our World Advice and recommendations for sustainability professionals Erik's Final Five Questions Responses: What is one piece of advice you would give other sustainability professionals that might help them in their careers? I would say have as many conversations as you can. Sustainability departments are often departments and functions that are in service to the business. We tend to operate as internal consultants. So how can we be everywhere at the same time? How can we ensure that every part of the business has the opportunity to build sustainability into their work? How do we consult to provide subject matter expertise to the business? The work we do within the department is measurement and data and setting sustainability targets and all that kind of exists within our function. But it all starts with having conversations. I wouldn't be afraid to sit down with someone and ask them more questions than provide statements on how they feel, how they perceive sustainability, where they feel as though it's working, where it's not working, what can we do more of that really helped build out our sustainability strategy. Do a little bit of a needs assessment on what stakeholders and partners value. The only other thing I'd say too secondary is, don't be afraid to start somewhere. I think we often feel as though the challenges we're up against are audacious and global and all encompassing, and they are. It can sometimes feel like we're out at sea against a massive challenge on our own  when we think of climate issues. That can freeze one up. It can stifle movement. You can feel like, "well, what can I do? I can't possibly make a difference." It's amazing what just taking one small step can lead to. There's been this kind of backlash against incrementalism in the space, like we need big changes, not incremental changes, but I don't know that I agree with that. I think an incremental quick change that you can grow on and iterate from can turn into something very big. So don't be afraid to start somewhere. Start with something that you can measure, for sure. But have those conversations and turn those small steps into big steps. What are you most excited about right now in the world of sustainability? There's a lot to be excited about. When realizing the gravity of the issue that we're facing, I think it's important to find sources of encouragement and hopefulness. There's really no other way. There's a line by Walt Kelly from his pogo comic strip many years ago that says, “we are confronted with insurmountable opportunities.” I use that and refer to that a lot. Try to figure out what is the opportunity in front of us and be optimistic about it. I think there's an excitement around the external forces. They're becoming louder and more influential, and that's encouraging. Our fans, our partners, our sponsors, our artists and entertainers. There's more of a voice and more influence that is being laid upon us and expected from us. I think collaboration is increasing cross-sector research companies that are competitive coming together in a pre-competitive way. Higher education institutions are pulling us in to do research that will help us in our business. We're seeing a lot of that. There's also a healthy kind of push, pull and engagement among our partners and sponsors. There's that untapped space with partnerships and sponsorships where it's determining inventory and the assets and how sustainability can be valued and monetized, but the conversations that we're having with partners or potential partners around shared goals, targets, aspirations, and what we can do together to help achieve our individual sustainability goals, kind of matches up. There's a lot of energy and excitement around that. What is one book you would recommend sustainability leaders read? One is Thinking in Systems by Donella Meadows. It's a book that'll retrain your brain to consider the interconnectedness of literally everything around you. And then Natural Capitalism by Paul Hawken, Amory Lovins and L. Hunter Lovins. It's that seminal book on environmental economics. What are some of your favorite resources or tools that really help you in your work? I read Green Bizz, 3BL and Triple Pundit. We get a lot of resources from our longtime partner, Schneider Electric. We've worked with them for many years and they have webinars and lots of sessions and thought leadership that we use a lot. I also keep up on the guidance from the GHG protocol, the EPA, the UN. In our space in particular, there are two organizations that are co- holding up the movement, Green Sports Alliance on the sports side and a more newly formed music sustainability alliance on the music side. We look to these two entities to hold and convene us, and there's a lot of good research and thinking coming out of those orgs as well. Where can our listeners go to learn more about you and the work being done at AEG? Our website, aegworldwide.com. There's an About Us dropdown at the top, and we have a somewhat newly revamped sustainability page and more changes coming. We're building out a microsite off that page when we have our next generation sustainability goals finalized. We'll have all that good stuff up there. We also have case studies or what we call sustainability stories up on that page. Also under About Us, you can read about our social impact and DEI functions as well. We have a Twitter account, we recently rebranded it from AEG One Earth to the handle, @AEGSustain or the account name, AEG sustainability. We're trying to get information up there. And of course, LinkedIn is a great place to reach out to myself or anyone from our sustainability team.

The team built the software around an almost universally accepted framework:There is one framework that almost every organization kind of agrees on, and that is called the theory of change. Right? So for many, many years, I think either through some philosophical evolution that I had, I started to realize that whatever I am going to do, I can't determine the end result. But as long as my empathy is there, my intentions are there; at least if I can do one good thing for my fellow human beings, I think that will make an impact. His view of it is that of a visionary CEO. “I don't necessarily think that I look at the world like I used to when I was much younger–from a transactional point of view. I look at it as a value creation point of view. I think that that helps me.”Seeing empathy as a tool for value creation in business akin to strategy is a profound insight for a social entrepreneur.By following Cyrus's example and advice, you can make empathy a practical skill in your portfolio. These party politics that are so divisive - they don't matter to these kids. And we need to bring back the conversation centered around the children, not about party politics that we're bringing into our school districts.” - Neftali Galarza on the topic of how divisive politics can delay necessary reforms to education. “I grew up in a mobile home park in Oasis, which is in Riverside County. There are to this day, a lot of communities don't have access to potable water... The idea that those students can go to college or go to a workforce, a CT program, and then join the labor union. Through education, you create these opportunities. Now you could jump a few economic ladders. Now you're in a different tax bracket. And that's through education that we have these opportunities to be able to create a community that moves forward, progresses and that we bring everyone together.” - Neftali Galarza on the topic of the power of education to help communities break socioeconomic barriers. “And I mentioned it's very important to have paid internships too... I had to take loans to do these internships and I'm paying them off now. I'm grateful that things have worked out for me, but it was a gamble on myself and the organizations that I wanted to intern in for. When we have a paid internship program, we can ensure that a college student isn't working at a fast food restaurant, going to school full time, and then looking for unpaid internship program.” - Neftali Galarza on the topic of the necessity of paid internships for college students, so they don't have to sacrifice their education for work experience or an income. Joining us today as our guest is Brook Ward, the President and CEO of Washington Health System (WHS) in Washington County, Pennsylvania, in that role since July 2019. From 2010 to June 2019, he served as Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer. In his role, Brook provides leadership, direction, and administration across the entire Washington Health System, which includes a large community hospital, a small rural hospital, a 70-provider physician group, a community wellness center, residency and fellowship programs, a school of nursing program and onsite medical simulation center and joint ventures in the areas of hospice, senior living, home health, cancer center and others. Brook is a graduate of Grand Valley State University, Grand Rapids MI, with a master's degree in Public Administration (MPA). He also has a Bachelor of Science in Health Care System Administration from Ferris State University, Big Rapids MI and received an Associates of Allied Science in Radiology from Ferris State University. Today we're going to be talking about how the WHS has never (I repeat, never) used a traveler nurse in their system. Acknowledging the travel nurses are skilled and they're good people, Brook makes a compelling case that quality and safety is better with full time staff members who are not "strangers" to the organization and how they do things. Brook also discusses the program that they created (and continue to iterate) that's win/win/win for the system, staff, and patients. In today's episode, Brook talks with host Mark Graban, about topics and questions, including: How bad are the staffing challenges in your area? Biggest concern - not just economics, but safety for patients and staff Great people, but there's a risk… safety, morale, not knowing our systems It's their "fourth or fifth iteration" -- what's the latest iteration and change? Staff get almost the same comp by picking up extra shifts, without needing to travel Telling peers about it — can't get people too interested?? Why? Expense gets talked about more… is there research about the impact? Future retrospective studies?? Iteration — Impact of extra shifts over time?? Meeting with nurses to learn what's working and not working Risk of burnout and fatigue — constant dialogue PILOT — Inpatient innovation unit to pilot and test things around team-based nursing So speaking of safety, you created a safety index — tell us about that? In fact, Roger was the recipient of a scholarship from the California Real Estate Association (CREA) to complete his undergraduate education. He subsequently received a Bachelor of Science (BS) degree in Business Administration, with a Specialization in Real Estate, from San Diego State University (SDSU). His original degree was an AA degree from Long Beach City College (LBCC), that he earned in the evening while serving on active duty in the U. S. Coast Guard (USCG). After receiving his Master of Public Administration (MPA) degree from SDSU two years later, he began his public service career in the Office of Budget and Management Services (OBMS) and, later, in the Office of the City Manager, in the City of Oakland, CA. Roger attended Golden Gate University's (GGU) doctoral program in Public Administration in the evening while serving in Oakland. He received his degree five-years later. Roger became a city manager the same month that he received his doctoral degree. During his city management career, he has taught graduate seminars at leading universities on both the West and East Coasts in the evenings. These schools included the University of California, California State University, Golden Gate University, Rutgers University, Fairleigh Dickinson University, the University of Connecticut, and the University of New Haven. Roger has written, edited, and been a contributing author to nearly 50 books dealing with cities. Many of his books focus on various aspects of cities, and highlight the national best practices being used to improve the quality of their services as well as their livability. These best practices include minimizing the negative impact of automobiles, growth management, the restoration of nature, the positive aspects of using the arts for inner-city renewal, and state-of-the-art economic development practices. Roger has also written about the importance of strategic planning, evolving immigrant services, financial management, and how to properly plan for the future of America's cities. When Roger was a city manager in Southern California he taught for GGU and completed the requirements for, and received, a Master of Business Administration (MBA) degree in management. He received the Outstanding Alumni of the Year Award for 2007 for "Distinguished Service in the Field of Public Administration" from the School of Public Affairs at SDSU. This honor is recommended by the faculty, and is based upon the graduate's contributions to the field of public administration during his or her public service career. Several years later, in 2018, the School of Public Affairs, at San Diego State University, recognized Dr. Roger Kemp, at their 50 year anniversary ceremony, as one of their top 50 "outstanding alumni," during the first half-century (50 years) of their School of Public Affairs Program's founding. Michele Wiesner of Hire Heroes USA shares how her organization was given an “edge” when it comes to engaging volunteers during a pandemic and how they have been growing capacity through remote volunteering since 2005. Hire Heroes USA provides employment assistance services to thousands of transitioning military members each year. Through personalized service and support, they help veterans and military spouses get hired, and they help companies hire and retain them. As the director of capacity building, Michele leads a team of six full-time volunteer program managers who are responsible for engaging and supporting volunteers in their regions. As opposed to many volunteer-driven organizations who've had to pivot to online volunteerism, Hire Heroes has always operated this way.  Some staff, however, have had to make the transition from working in an office to working from home. Rather than making big changes during COVID, they had to make more subtle adjustments to their mature digital volunteer strategy.  And, staff have had to catch up with volunteers. In this episode, Michele shares how her team has made pivots and how they managed their exponential growth (triple the number of volunteer applications during COVID!) by focusing on building relationships, offering meaningful roles to supporters, and remaining flexible in their approach. The university agreed to pay her $350,000 to cover her claims for damages and her attorneys' fees and also agreed to donate $100,000 to the Center for Institutional Courage. Kevin has a Bachelor of Arts degree in Sociology and Organizational Behavior and Management from Brown University, where he served as a teaching assistant in sociology courses dealing with issues of race and social justice, and a Master's degree in Public Administration (MPA) from the Baruch College School of Public Affairs, CUNY. In the news: Institutional betrayal Three graduate students file sexual harassment suit against prominent Harvard anthropology professor (Boston Globe)DARVO A high-flying German media giant is ahead on digital media but seems stuck in the past when it comes to the workplace and deal-making. Axel Springer (NYTimes)Women spoke up, men cried conspiracy: inside Axel Springer's #MeToo moment (Financial Times) 2018 NASEM Report  Sexual Harassment in Academic Science Engineering and Medicine This study examined the prevalence and impact of sexual harassment in academia on the career advancement of women in the scientific, technical, and medical workforce. The report concludes that the cumulative result of sexual harassment in academic sciences, engineering, and medicine is significant damage to research integrity and a costly loss of talent in these fields. It provides a series of recommendations for systemwide changes to the culture and climate in higher education to prevent and effectively address all forms of sexual harassment. DARVODARVO stands for Deny, Attack, and Reverse Victim and Offender—a perpetrator strategy. The perpetrator may Deny the behavior, Attack the individual doing the confronting, and Reverse the roles of Victim and Offender, so that the perpetrator adopts the victim role and accuses the true victim of being an offender. This can occur when an actually guilty perpetrator assumes the role of "falsely accused" and attacks the accuser's credibility and blames the accuser of being the perpetrator of a false accusation. Institutional courage™Institutional courage is the antidote to institutional betrayal. It includes institutional accountability and transparency, as when institutions respond well to disclosures and when institutions conduct anonymous surveys of victimization within the institution and then use the data to become healthier. Betrayal blindnessBetrayal blindness, a key concept of betrayal trauma theory, is the unawareness, not-knowing, and forgetting exhibited by people towards betrayal. Victims, perpetrators, and witnesses may display betrayal blindness in order to preserve relationships, institutions, and social systems upon which they depend. Betrayal trauma A betrayal trauma occurs when someone you trust and/or someone who has power over you mistreats you. For instance, it's a betrayal trauma when your boss sexually harasses you. Our research shows that betrayal traumas are toxic. They are associated with measurable harm, both physical and mental. Institutional betrayalInstitutional betrayal, developed from betrayal trauma theory, occurs when the institution you trust or depend upon mistreats you. It can be overt but it can also be less obvious, for instance, a failure to protect you when protection is a reasonable expectation. Our research shows that institutional betrayal is also related to measurable harm —again both mental and physical.

Diagnosed at age 33 with end-stage cancer and thriving IN NEW WAYS now 28 years later, Kristi offers a unique and uplifting perspective on embracing gratefulness. She offers many practices and 5 KEY PRINCIPLES of gratefulness for coming alive in new ways that go far beyond what many of us know about gratitude, which we'll talk about later. Here is one major distinction she notes: “Gratitude waits for something to happen; gratefulness just waits for us to be awake.”Kristi Nelson is the author of the recently released book, Wake Up Grateful: The Transformative Practice of Taking Nothing for Granted, and the Executive Director of A Network for Grateful Living. She has spent her adult life immersed in the rewarding work of non-profit leadership, fundraising, and organizational development. In a wide variety of roles, she has helped to lead, fund, and strengthen organizations committed to progressive social and spiritual change. In 2001, Kristi founded a values-based fundraising consulting and training and leadership coaching company, and in this capacity, worked with organizations such as the Institute for Jewish Spirituality, Buddhist Peace Fellowship, Spirit in Action, Wisdom 2.0, and The Center for Contemplative Mind in Society, among others. She was also the founding Director of the Soul of Money Institute with Lynne Twist, Director of Development at Kripalu Center for Yoga and Health, and Director of Development and Community Relations for the Center for Mindfulness in Medicine, Health Care and Society.Kristi received her BA from UMass/Amherst, a graduate certificate in Business and Sociology from Boston College, and her Master's in Public Administration (MPA) with a concentration in Leadership Studies from Harvard University.“My illness taught me greater empathy for the wounded places inside everyone that we cannot see, touch, or imagine — and not to take what we see of each other at face value. So many of our illnesses, struggles, and disabilities are hidden, and many people who appear to have disabilities are, in other ways, far more intact than we might be. The most important parts of us long for the sincere invitation to show themselves and be acknowledged in both our brokenness and beauty. The surgery to remove cancer that had metastasized to my spine repaired me and readied me for treatment. But it did far more than that. It cracked me open and taught me unmitigated awe for the capacities of the body to function, to repair and recover, to heal, and to carry on. It opened my eyes and heart to better appreciate the courage with which so many people live their days. The human capacity for tenacity and resilience is perpetually astonishing. I learned that our bodies are a never-ending blessing worthy of our full-blown, moment-to-momentappreciation and wonder — no matter what.” -- Kristi Nelson-- “Grateful living reminds you that the body is worthy of your most grateful regard and is always available to receive your care. No matter how broken you might feel, remember that you are always whole. And you are always a source of awe, just as you are. It is a hugely generative practice to bring greater tenderness and empathy to the body — yours and others'.” -- Kristi NelsonKristi defines what living with gratitude means to her and how her sense of worthiness impacts her work now and her sense of living gratefully.Utilizing the principles of STOP, LOOK, and GO, which she describes in detail, can help unlock gratitude.Other key thoughts of hers:“ When appreciation guides our relationship to ourselves, and we feel self-compassion, this provides us a frame of reference to better appreciate and feel compassion for others too.” * * *“Possibility is awakened, or not, every day through how we treat ourselves...We cannot know what is possible with others or with life until we give ourselves permission for a more unlimited and grateful experience of ourselves.” * * *“If you were to STOP WAITING and treat yourself exactly as you long to, what new opportunities would arise?” We discuss the power of emotions, feeling them, welcoming them, and BECOMING VULNERABLE.Gail discusses the importance of learning to receive to improve health and well-being.  She says in her own book, Cancer as a Love Story, and in coaching others through transformation and cancer, that many who get breast cancer are in the helping professions and often over give to others, sometimes at the expense of their own health.--Kristi noted she had to learn to receive through her healing journey and made a profound statement: “Giving at the expenseof receiving is selfish.” Kristi elaborates on how hard that was for her to do initially, and how receiving changed her life. She also offers a key insight on valuing others: “May you hold your relationships as sacred, with humility and generosity.” ~ Kristi NelsonBrilliant Grateful Rule Questions for leaning in and listening Kristi shares:What do you want me to be sure to understand? What would make you feel seen and understood right now? What could I do or say that would be reparative or healing for you? What would be meaningful to you as an outcome of this conversation? What other questions would help get to the matter at heart?THE 5 GUIDING PRINCIPLES OF GRATEFULNESS offered by Kristi:1) Life is a Gift. When you greet each moment gratefully, you are always receiving.2) Everything is a Surprise. When you open to wonder, opportunities abound.3) The Ordinary is Extraordinary. When you take nothing for granted, life is abundant.4) Appreciation is Generative. When you tend what you value, what you value thrives.5) Love is Transformative. When you embrace the fullness of life, your heart overflows.Kristi's brilliant book: Wake Up Grateful: The Transformative Practice of Taking Nothing for Granted, which is now available at Bookshop (Indie book purveyors), Barnes & Noble, and Amazon. To learn more about Kristi's work as Executive Director of A Network for Grateful Living, go to gratefulness.org, where there are also many daily meditations and practices for expanding in gratefulness.

It's a fantastic feeling and we love inciting gratitude and other people helping other people feel grateful and yet gratitude tends to be conditional it's fleeting. It's transactional. Often we wait for somebody to do something for us or for something to happen. As we said from the outset it's something that is ephemeral and difficult for us to put our hands around. How do I get more gratitude inducing experiences? And it ends up being a little bit like the pursuit of happiness. I think in that way it's elusive. And it feels out there gratefulness, as I was saying before, is something that we can cultivate as a practice, very similar to mindfulness. And it's a beautiful way to weave together more moments of gratitude. And to learn how to find those experiences of gratitude and to uplift them and to deepen ourselves into them more often. So it's not about being grateful for everything, but gratefulness as the ability to be grateful in every moment. And that's something that we can learn."   On What's Essential  "So this has been a really tough year. I think it's taught us what's essential and helped us come home to that question of How do we value and really live into what is essential fo...

In today's episode we sat down with Mia Reyes, the Global Director of Government and Industry Marketing for Microsoft. She comes with a unique perspective as an industry outsider who was recruited into the world of tech.Mia would advise a company that cannot find diverse talent to think about how, what and where they are recruiting. She began working in the tech space when someone identified her talents and realized the benefits she could bring to the company. Many things that employers list as core competencies in tech are actually things that can be taught. Look for the individual qualities you need in an employee and teach the rest. Currently, the barriers to get into tech can feel insurmountable for industry outsiders. In Mia’s opinion, removing that requirement for a degree for certain software engineering roles would help companies find more diverse talent. In regards to apprenticeship programs she finds there's more value in doing real work over a longer period of time than there is in short term stints. Instead of dipping your toes into the water, an apprenticeship is like jumping right into an opportunity. In regards to employee retention, Mia believes it's all about trust. Employees can tell when a company is genuinely investing in diversity and inclusion programs and when they are just paying lip service. For inclusion programs to be successful they have to be driven, promoted, and incentivized from the highest levels of the company. Mia Reyes leads Microsoft's global/worldwide industry marketing and go-to-market business planning and strategy for government. Formerly she was a Policy Director who specialized in digital and financial services policies, representing U.S. technology companies (Microsoft, Google, Facebook, Airbnb and more) and the U.S. private sector in the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC). King is best known for her comedic abilities but in her new breakout role playing Leslie, on the Emmy winning HBO series Euphoria opposite Zendaya and Storm Reid, King showcases a much more dramatic side of herself. In this role, King pulls from her early life in the projects of Liberty City watching her mother and uncles battle addiction and triumphantly overcoming. It is from that resolve and resilience that King offers a dramatic perspective and newfound depth in this role. Watching her mother work hard as a postal worker while battling and defeating addiction shaped King’s perseverance. Her passion for performance started at the early age of five years old. Armed with a silly sense of humor, King started reciting cheeky poems by Langston Hughes. After graduating from the University of Florida (Go Gators!) with a degree in Theatre Performance, King went on to hone her comedy improv skills at the Groundlings Improv School. King’s comedy has landed her roles on Kevin Hart’s Guide to Black, 2 Broke Girls and the Just for Laughs Festival in Montreal, Canada. She's also produced and wrote on the hilarious web series Funny Married Stuff and her podcast King Confessions.  Striving to be more than just an actor, King created Jeli, a technology company that reimagines Hollywood through diversity and inclusion. We discuss the criteria used to classify something as an EPA; the kinds of EPAs that would be considered (including cultural and group-level EPAs); who would be able to access it, and how the evidence would be weighted; and who would benefit from it, and in what ways. Glenn, the CEO and President of the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence (NCADV).  Previously Ms. Glenn was employed by the Colorado Department of Human Services for 28 years and served as the Director of the Domestic Violence Program (DVP) for the last nine of those years.  Ruth has worked and volunteered in the domestic violence field for over 25 years and holds a Masters' in Public Administration (MPA) from the University of Colorado Denver, Program on Domestic Violence, as well as a BA in Communications. Ms. Glenn has served on many domestic violence program and funding boards, provided hundreds of presentations on domestic violence victimization and survival, testified before the Colorado state legislature and the United States Congress, and provided consultation, training and technical assistance on a local and national level on victim/survivor issues as they relate to domestic violence.  As a survivor, Ruth also often shares her experience to bring awareness about the dynamics of domestic violence. She is here with us on this episode to talk to us about the work she does at the NCADV and to debunk commonly held myths of survivors and abusers and how survivors and advocates like herself can play a vital role in the crafting of a national narrative in this work that is inclusive, empowering and impactful.  We will be speaking with Ruth about the NCADV's role in the creation of the DisarmDV website and partnership which will address gun violence prevention and reform in America, the role of the media in reporting on domestic violence and in particular, its role in gun violence, and her thoughts on the intersection of race, class and gender as it has played out in the NFL's DV and kneeling policies.
