I was honored to be able to record this wide-ranging interview with violinist Yale Strom, who is the leading ethnographer-artist of Klezmer music and history, and also has done many years of research among the Roma communities. He speaks to us about some of his many inspiring experiences during over 75 research expeditions to Central and Eastern Europe and the Balkans. To prepare for this episode, I read several of his books, including his 400 page The Book of Klezmer: The History, The Music, The Folklore, some of which we touched on during this conversation, and he also spoke about two of his upcoming books and other projects. Yale is an energetic and prolific creator; he's also a filmmaker, photographer, educator, playwright and composer, and we spoke about many of his projects during this wide-ranging interview.  Timestamps below. https://www.leahroseman.com/episodes/yale-strom Video Transcript Yale Strom Website To support this series, please either buy me a coffee or shop at my merchandise store Newsletter sign-up You may be also interested in these episodes:  Alicia Svigals (both episodes linked) Polina Shepherd, Josh “Socalled” Dolgin, and Marilyn Lerner.   Timestamps:  (00:00) Intro (02:29) Yale's career as ethnographer-artist (04:03) Stoliner shul concert in Detroit Victory Fellowship Baptist Church (10:44)  Oberek Palota, Klezmer music from Slovakia, from the album “Borsht with Bread, Brothers” with Yale Strom and Hot Pstromi (14:34) ethnographic research, Wandering Feast book, Yiddish, meeting Holocaust survivors (24:43)The Witches of Lublin (27:26) Dire Gelt from The Devil's Brides with Yale Strom and Hot Pstromi, vocals with Elizabeth Schwartz (31:10) Yale Strom's films The Last Klezmer, A Great Day in Eldridge Street, the Man from Munkasc, An American Socialist, the Life and Times of Eugene Victor Debs (35:09)Leopold Kozlowski, The Last Klezmer, Naftuli Brandwein (39:33) Rom musicians, book Uncertain Roads, Searching for the Gypsies, connections with the Jews (49:46) Klezmer loshn secret language and culture (58:46) the lost Stoliner Weinstein manuscript, upcoming book  (01:07:02) other episodes with Klezmer musicians and ways to support this series (01:07:42) Yale's compositions and commissions (01:17:28) Dave Tarras (01:22:19) Influences of Klezmer and Romani on Russian school of violin playing, Oistrach, Auer (01:29:25) Shimmering Lights album, Sara Caswell, influences of prayers on Klezmer (01:33:53) excerpt from Bashir Mizmor, Shimmering Lights album Yale Strom's Broken Consort, with Sara Caswell improv  (01:35:56) The Expulsion of the Jews, Sephardic communities research (01:43:33) Schlomo books, new musical about the Chagalls, Sweet Fragrance of Life

Welcome back to 1958 for an oldie, but a goodie! That's right, it's time for a remaster of our fourth musical: Lady Jane's Radio Takeover. It's the story of Jane, a young woman with dreams of stardom, who works as a coffee girl at New York's top teen hits radio station. She may be overlooked time-and-time-again by those around her, but she has a bold (and probably illegal) strategy to share her talents with the world! Will she propel herself to fame, or will she fail spectacularly? Either way, it'll involve a lot of doo-wop and rock 'n' roll! Escuchar audio

Hanukkah Harry is a fictional character on Saturday Night Live played by Jon Lovitz. Hanukkah Harry is portrayed on the show as a variation upon the modern-day image of Santa Claus, with a beard characteristic of a male adherent of Haredi Judaism, and with his hat in blue with white edges (the colors of an Ashkenazi Jewish tallit, or prayer shawl, shared by the flag of Israel). Hanukkah Harry's first appearance on SNL was on Season 15: Episode 9, a show first broadcast on December 16, 1989, with guest host Andie MacDowell, in a sketch titled "The Night Hanukkah Harry Saved Christmas", that viewers are told is sponsored by Hallmark Cards in association with the Jewish Anti-Defamation League. Unable to deliver toys to children due to a stomach virus, Santa calls Hanukkah Harry (Jon Lovitz) at his workshop on Mount Sinai, asking if he could fill in. Hanukkah Harry agrees and flies through the air on a cart pulled by three donkeys, Moische, Herschel and Schlomo. Hanukkah Harry lands on a roof and climbs down the chimney of the home of Scott (Mike Myers) and Christine (Victoria Jackson), offering gifts of slacks and socks respectively, as well as chocolate coins and a dreidel. While the children are initially disappointed at their gifts, their realization that Hanukkah Harry had helped Santa, makes them recognize that "Christians and Jews, deep down, are pretty much the same. Maybe that's the true meaning of Christmas!" With that statement Santa's flu is cured, and Santa comes down the chimney bearing gifts of Barbie make-me-pretty for Christine and a pellet gun for Scott.[1][2] Hanukkah Harry's second appearance on SNL was on Season 15: Episode 17, with guest host Corbin Bernsen, first broadcast on April 14, 1990, in a sketch titled "The Night Hanukkah Harry Saved Easter."[3] The definitive scholarly and popular treatment of Hannukah Harry appears in the book A Kosher Christmas: 'Tis the Season to Be Jewish by Rabbi Joshua Eli Plaut, Ph.D. in the fourth chapter entitled “ `Twas the Night Before Hanukkah: Remaking Christmas Through Parody and Popular Culture.” Plaut details and analyzes how Hannukah Harry becomes an American folk hero as a counterpart to Santa Claus.[4] Building on these two SNL appearances, Hanukkah Harry has been referenced as a personification of Hanukkah to correspond to Santa Claus in various other media, including on National Public Radio, and on the pages of The New York Times in which Jonathan Safran Foer satirically described him as "a real person who drops in on Jewish homes each of the eights nights of Hanukkah to deliver gifts that are in no way dependent on children's good behavior".[5][6] The Baltimore Sun has called Hanukkah Harry one of the best Saturday Night Live sketches of all time.[7]

Everything is going according to plan everything is going according to plan. Sven: It doesn't matter who we are. Yeah. Enoch: But for real the the youth the under under 20 demographic is like forget about it. I was talking last night with a friend and we are talking about the Holocaust and what most of it is but how. It's hard to reach people that have had a certain level of programming. So even even people that are like are sympathetic and right wing and like even the idea of like a white state is good. We still have this. They still get all fucked up and weird about talking about the Holocaust. But then when you talk to people that are like under 20 years old they don't give a fuck about the Holocaust. They think it's hilarious. Hitler is funny and cool and the idea of gassing Jews is like just a fucking joke. Yeah like they don't give a shit. They don't care. Anglin: Right. You loaded a culture of complete nihilism and then somehow thought they could insulate themselves from that. Where nothing has any meaning at all. But then they're all in there like but one thing does have meaning. The Holocaust of the 6 million in the gas chambers that they get turned into lampshades. Say it doesn't work. Yeah. Sven: And now the snake is eating its Curly Q sideburns tail. It's funny how it's sort of like once you tell people there's nothing sacred there's nothing holy. But you know what this thing that happened to these Jews in this black and white looking shaky real camera from the 40s that nobody really knows what's going on. Like that's that's the thing. That's what you have to care about. You don't care don't care about anything else. We care about these fucking these fucking Jews in Germany in Eastern Europe in the 40s and that's really important. What why. Why was nothing important. Why the fuck do I give a shit about this bullshit. *  "Talking To Antifa and the Left - Bronxblogger, Tim Blake, Kevin Logan and Mike Enoch" (104,556 views currently.) "TDS245 The Racewarski Continues" Roscoe Jones "The Hebrew Connection" "Why are there so many movies of the Shoah? Of the garillions that allegedly died? The Shoah was fiction. Lies and confusion. The Germans had nothing to hide. So we've been told and some choose to believe it. I know it's lies, wait and see. Some day we'll break it, The Hebrew Connection, the white man, my brothers and me. Who said that every kike would be found and round up, and put on a big boxcar? Schlomo just told us that, and we all believed it. Now it has done so much harm. And it's too degrading to just keep stargazing. It's time to unplug the TV." * Himmler Posen Speeches (October 4, 1943): https://www.facinghistory.org/holocaust-human-behavior/himmler-speech-posen-1943 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Posen_speeches https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mRO04q_lQi4 "I want to also mention a very difficult subject . . . before you, with complete candor. It should be discussed amongst us, yet nevertheless, we will never speak about it in public. Just as we did not hesitate on June 30 to carry out our duty as ordered, and stand comrades who had failed against the wall and shoot them—about which we have never spoken, and never will speak. That was, thank God, a kind of tact natural to us, a foregone conclusion of that tact, that we have never conversed about it amongst ourselves, never spoken about it, everyone . . . shuddered, and everyone was clear that the next time, he would do the same thing again, if it were commanded and necessary. I am talking about the evacuation of the Jews, the extermination of the Jewish people. It is one of those things that is easily said. [quickly] “The Jewish people is being exterminated,” every Party member will tell you “perfectly clear, it’s part of our plans, we’re eliminating the Jews, exterminating them, a small matter.” [less quickly] And then along they all come, all the 80 million upright Germans, and each one has his decent Jew. [mockingly] They say: all the others are swine, but here is a first-class Jew. [a few people laugh] And . . . [audience cough] [carefully] . . . none of them has seen it, has endured it. Most of you will know what it means when 100 bodies lie together, when 500 are there or when there are 1000. And . . . to have seen this through and—with the exception of human weakness—to have remained decent, has made us hard and is a page of glory never mentioned and never to be mentioned. Because we know how difficult things would be, if today in every city during the bomb attacks, the burdens of war and privations, we still had Jews as secret saboteurs, agitators and instigators. We would probably be at the same stage as 16/17, if the Jews still resided in the body of the German people." * Columbia Guide to the Holocaust

VIDEO: Zuill Bailey Plays Selections from Bach's Cello Suite No. 3"Playing Bach – and I don't jokingly say this – is like public therapy," said the cellist Zuill Bailey, just after finishing several movements from Bach's Cello Suites in the WQXR Café. "You're feeling unbelievable one moment and you're feeling very insecure in the next. "When you play Bach well, or you feel that it's going well, there is no greater feeling, because it's a completion of your work and your emotions." If the wavy-haired Bailey seemed to be particularly Zen-like on this steamy July morning, he believes it may have been an after-effect of his recent time in Alaska, where since 2011 he has been the artistic director of the Sitka Summer Music Festival. "Alaska is like Bach," Bailey noted. "It makes you feel grounded and complete. It's oxygen for the soul." Despite his relaxed manner, Bailey also an exceedingly busy artist with a wide-ranging resume. Among its highlights are nearly three-dozen recordings, from the big standard concertos (Dvorak, Elgar, Tchaikovsky) to an upcoming album pairing Bloch's Schlomo with Nico Muhly's Cello Concerto, of which he gave the U.S. premiere in 2013. The cellist frequently tries to pair well-known works with rarities in an effort to challenge audiences, albeit in modest doses. Bailey, who is based in El Paso, TX, travels with a 1693 Matteo Gofriller, an instrument formerly owned by Mischa Schneider of the Budapest String Quartet. He becomes effusive when describing the cello, which is noticeably large and features a rose carved on top under the fingerboard. "It has a very unique sound," said Bailey. "It's very broad and bass-y and yet has the singing ability to play solo lines up top as well." In our interview, attention eventually turned to Bailey's most unusual calling-card: his acting stint as a murderous cellist on the HBO prison series "Oz" between 1997 and 2003. Over a decade later, he believes it was important that he set the parameters of his character – who was imprisoned after stabbing a violinist with the endpin of his cello. "They had me saying really horrible things on the show," Bailey said of the original script. "I said, 'my audience would not understand that this is fake and they would see me as that person. And I can't be that person if I'm playing a performing cellist. So my dialogue was cut down to a bare minimum." Bailey also stipulated that he be able to choose his own music, which included bits of Bach and Paganini. Does Bailey have any more acting in his future? "I hope not," he said, laughing. "I love the idea of bringing the cello to new audiences but I'm not searching those things out." Video: Kim Nowacki; Audio: Edward Haber; Text & Production: Brian Wise; Interview: Naomi Lewin
