Berlin is about to get conservative. The Christian Democrats have taken control of our once lefty, greeny, progressive and mismanaged city. The new CDU mayor is Kai Wegner, and he's already off to a bad start. Berlin's parliament took an unprecedented three rounds of voting to elect him, despite his coalition having a majority. That means some within his own ranks aren't happy with him in power, and could cause trouble by refusing to pass legislation. Was the New Election Justified? How did the CDU come to power? They won 28.2% of the vote in the February 2023 re-election. They invited the SPD (which won 18.4% of votes) to join in a coalition. Together the CDU and SPD have 46.6% of votes and 82 of 159 seats in parliament. But the previous coalition of SPD, Greens (18.4%) and die Linke (12.2%) together had 49% of votes and taken 90 seats. Put simply, the old R2G (or G2R) coalition could have continued, and would have represented more voters. Why did the 2023 election happen at all? Joel read the court decision which overturned the previous 2021 'marathon' election and found few facts to support the claim that it was terminally flawed. You can read the verdict for yourself here: https://gesetze.berlin.de/bsbe/document/KVRE008452215 Joel's take: The 2021 election shouldn't have been re-run, and the 2023 coalition isn't democratically supported. This week we are doing a special listener suggestion episode, from Kyle Brown, who releases music under the name "Kite Vendor"."DIIV" are a four piece indie rock band based out of Brooklyn, New York. The project originally started after lead songwriter and frontman Zachary Cole Smith left the band "Beach Fossils", for whom he was playing drums for. Cole started by writing and demoing material in his bedroom, not knowing if anything would come of what he was creating, or if anyone would ever hear it. However as his confidence grew he decided to share his new material with the label managers at Captured Tracks, the label Beach Fossils were signed with. The label liked what they heard and decided to put out a couple singles. Off the success of these singles Captured Tracks decided to put out Cole's full-length debut album "Oshin" in 2012.To hear the full story, and a selection of tracks, check out this weeks episode of R2G.To learn the full story, check out this week's episode of Roots to Grooves!"Roots to Grooves" is a production of SIGNL.https://www.signlradio.comhttps://www.instagram.com/signlradiohttps://www.twitter.com/signlradiohttps://www.facebook.com/signlradiohttps://www.mixcloud.com/signlhttps://open.spotify.com/user/96mhz6qfjoztxbl2dpm0uj903?si=aAZpsoEnRAKdx85kr1QWhg

Berliner voters want more left-green politics and a radical state take-over of property - but the new mayor may ignore those demands. At Sunday's city-state elections, a majority (54.3%) voted for the R2G parties, showing the citizens want the current coalition to continue. Another majority (56.7%) voted 'yes' in the Deutsche Wohnung & Co. Enteignen referendum, instructing the city to forcibly buy houses from big corporate property investors. However it will be up to the SPD to decide if those things happen. The SPD won the most votes (21.4%) and can pick who to team up with - and they don't like Die Linke, and have clashed with the Greens. The referendum result is non-binding, and the SPD's lead candidate (and likely mayor) Franziska Giffey is opposed to it (although many members support it). Will Giffey's SPD really ignore the wishes of a majority of Berliners? Join us for this quick take on Berlin's 2021 election results. With Izzy Choksey, Joel Dullroy, Jöran Mandik and Daniel Stern.

Berlin is weeks away from its state election and a referendum on housing. We analyse the campaign posters with Konrad Werner, columnist for Exberliner, and host of the weekly German news show Megan's Megacan: https://anchor.fm/megans-megacan The AFD has moved from anti-migrant to anti-Green issues, declaring "Your car would vote for us". The CDU are trying to convince Berliners they'd do a better job than the R2G coalition. The SPD is sticking with mayoral candidate Franziska Giffey, despite more plagiarism problems. She's also effectively ruled out a new coalition with Die Linke and possibly the Greens, meaning a return to a conservative coalition in Berlin. And there's lots of small parties with interesting ideas and terrible graphic design. Izzy's volunteering to campaign for Klimaliste, who have a detailed plan on how to mitigate climate change, and say the Greens aren't doing enough. Go21 during the month of May is passed. We saw God do incredible things (Ep 32), but now, what is next? In this episode, Jon interviews Dave Gibson with what he sees on the horizon in missions and evangelism in the coming years.
The Berlin Mietendeckel experiment is finished. The city’s revolutionary attempt to freeze rental prices for five years, and reduce overpriced leases, has been killed off by Germany’s highest court. The decision has unleashed a political storm. Everyone is angry - but who will voters punish? The R2G parties who tried to regulate rents? Or their opponents, the CDU and FDP who successfully derailed the project? We make the case for why each side is to blame. There’s a big bill to pay, as hundreds of thousands of Berliners now face back-payments, higher rents and permanent shadow contracts. We’ll run the numbers on the potential local economic crisis that could follow. What hope is there left for affordable housing? And what can the rest of the world learn from Berlin’s short-lived rental revolution? The experiment is over. Now it’s time to analyze the results.
The month of May was a month of global outreach. Many answered the call to share their faith with the lost. In a world that is being torn apart in so many ways, today's episode highlights how God is still on the throne and still moving.
After years of training people how to share their faith, Greg Stier and his team developed the "Life In Six Words" app to help Christians talk about Jesus. In this episode, Greg teaches how to use this simple tool to share the greatest news in the world.
Greg Stier teaches how to naturally and winsomely share your faith using a three-step strategy that has worked for thousands of people around the world.
Greg Stier shares how God began to burden his heart for the lost and tips on how to keep non-believers and their need for Christ in the forefront of our minds.

We’ll run the numbers on the potential local economic crisis that could follow. What hope is there left for affordable housing? And what can the rest of the world learn from Berlin’s short-lived rental revolution? The experiment is over. Now it’s time to analyze the results The Challengers The CDU and FDP took the Mietendeckel law to the constitutional court, where it was struck down. They perpetuated a false narrative - "build, don't cap" - which claimed, incorrectly, that the Mietendeckel prevented new development (constructions from 2014 were specifically excluded from the law). The CDU was responsible for weakening federal rental regulations in the first place, enabling prices to skyrocket. And then there's political donations - or as Joel calls it, legalized corruption. Almost 80% of the CDU's publicly-declared donations come from the real estate sector. Joel interviews Berlin FDP leader Sebastian Czaja and challenges him on his false claim that the Mietendeckel prevented building, and on the FDP's donations from real estate companies. Czaja says his party takes donations from all parts of society. The Supporters Are the parties who created the Mietendeckel culpable of incompetence? The governing coalition of the SPD, Die Linke and Die Grünen - or R2G - took a huge political and financial gamble, and lost. The R2G promised renters a revolution, but delivered a regression. Many tenants must now make large back payments for which they have not saved. They went against the advice of many legal experts who warned their law was unconstitutional. We speak to two of the Mietendeckel's creators. Kilian Wegner is a law professor and SPD member who co-authored a policy paper which laid the groundwork for the Mietendeckel. He says the R2G was right in taking a chance on an uncertain law, due to out-of-control property prices. Another lawyer, Professor Franz Mayer, wrote an expert opinion which argued Berlin had the constitutional right to create the Mietendeckel. He says there was a chance of success, and believes the court should have helped tenants by negating backpayments. The Big Bill How much will the Mietendeckel fiasco cost? We interview real estate researcher Christoph Trautvetter. He estimates the backpayments will cost renters between €100 to €300 million. Ongoing rent increases will cost around €500 million annually - that's half a billion euros flowing from tenants to landlords, money not going into the local economy. Daniel Halmer from Conny.Legal, formerly Wenigermieter, says tenants may be able to reduce backpayments and shaddow rents by using the Mietpreisebremse - the existing rental regulation that limits rent increases to 10% of local prices. Time to Sieze Property? An even more radical concept is now gaining support - the referendum initiative known as Deutsche Wohnen & Co Enteignen, who want to seize properties from big corporate landlords. We speak to Wouter Bernhardt from the movement's podcast Von Menschen und Mieten. He says expropriation would be a permanent solution to rising rental prices. The End of the Experiment? The Mietendeckel experiment ran too short to answer many questions, and the data was disrupted by the parallel pandemic. But we did learn a few things. If you want a minor reform, demand a revolution. If you get your revolution, prepare for reprisal. Tenants globally now know rent control is no longer excluded from the political discourse. Greg Stier, founder of Dare2Share Ministries, shares his story of how Christ reached his family through the most unlikely person, a true testimony to how God can use anyone.
Key Questions: Does it concern you the Jehovah's Witnesses' beliefs are so different from most churches? How did you come to the conclusion that this JW teaching is the truth? Why do you think Jesus claimed the personal name of Jehovah (I am) in John 8:58? Key Verses: Deity of Christ: Colossians 1:5, Colossians 2:9; Hebrews 1:3; John 8:58 Apologetic (Jesus and Father are one): Isaiah 44:6 -> Revelations 1:8 -> Revelations 21:5-7, 22:13 -> Revelations 1:17-18
Key Beliefs: Jesus is not God but a created being as the "son of God." They believe in an afterlife where we will all become gods. Salvation is said to be through Christ but is actually through works. Key Questions: What do you believe about Jesus, and why? How are you doing in your Mormon walk? Why do you think so many Christians believe Mormons fall outside biblical Christianity? Key Verses: Isaiah 43, 44, 45 John 8:58 Ephesians 2:8-9
Key Questions: How sure are you that there is no God? How did you come to that conclusion? If you were to believe in God, what kind of evidence would you be looking for? (Be prepared to talk about evidence for the resurrection of Jesus and other similar things.) Key Arguments: Designer Argument First Cause Argument Moral Argument
Key Facts: Muslims are often extremely open to talk about spiritual things. Make sure you listen well to them also. They believe Jesus was a prophet and not God. They believe Jesus did not die on the cross. Key Questions: Does the Quran tell you the absolute standard you need to meet to get to heaven? When did you decide to become a Muslim (probably not a decision they made)? Jesus and Islam both claim to be the only path to God, how should a person decide which is right? How do you answer . . . [3 Big Questions] How we got here? (Origin) What's your purpose? (Meaning) What happens after death? (Destiny) Validity of the Bible Through Prophecy Location of the Messiah's birth (Micah 5:2) The miracle of the virgin birth (Isaiah 7:14) The sufferings of Jesus (Isaiah 53)
Suggested Preparation Go out in twos (Luke 10:1). One will be praying as the other is sharing. Head to a place where people loiter (park, mall, etc.). This is the target audience, as people don't like getting interrupted if they are trying to accomplish a task. Check your own hearts (Psalm 51:10-13). We want to be pure and holy before asking the Holy Spirit to use us to lead people to Him. Be prayed up before you head out. We are plundering souls from Satan's kingdom, and he does not like it. And, God is the only one who can save them (2 Cor 4:6). Know and practice sharing the Gospel with trusted friends. It also may be helpful to know some basic apologetics, particularly answering the question, “Why you believe what you believe?” Getting People to Stop: Ask a simple question, something like “Excuse me, may I ask you a question?” Getting Their Permission: Ask the individual(s) if they'd be interested in taking a short questionnaire concerning spiritual things. Ex. “Hi my name is _______ and this is _______. We are from a local church, and we are out in the community trying to determine people's religious preferences around the area of the Church and perhaps dialogue about faith. We have a brief four-point questionnaire. Would you be willing to take a minute or two and assist us?"Get to Know Something About Them Personally (shows that you care): --where are you from? --what do you do for a living? --(for students) what are you studying? Asking these questions will help you determine what they believe (for groups address each person individually):1. Would you classify yourself as spiritual, religious, atheist, or agnostic?2. To you, who is Jesus Christ?3. Do you believe in an afterlife? (If yes) Can you describe it?4. (If heaven/hell) How does a person get to heaven?(If unsure or hoping there's a heaven or an afterlife) If you could know for sure without having to wonder would you want to know?(If anything else [ex. Atheist]) How do you know that's true?Possible Diagnostic Question instead of Q4: If you died today and stood before God, and he asked, “Why should I let you into heaven?”, what would you say?Concluding the questionnaire: If they are opened and engaged, feel free to continue the conversation. (Many of these conversations will go for 20-30 minutes.) Do you mind if I ask a follow-up question to what you just said? This isn't part of the survey, so we are officially done, but If you don't mind, I wanted to ask . . .You will meet many different people when evangelizing, some open and some not. One category would be those who are receptive to the message and you may sense that they could be ready to surrender to Christ. In these cases, after sharing the Gospel, it may be appropriate to ask, "Is there anything keeping you from giving your life to Christ right now?" You may get the privilege of introducing them to Jesus.More frequently, people are not quite ready to trust Christ. For those still wrestling, a 21-day challenge in the Gospel of John can be helpful. "Can I leave you a 21-day challenge? It is to read one chapter in the Gospel of John for 21 days. There are 21 chapters, one for each day, and ask, 'Jesus, if you really are who you say you are, would you reveal yourself to me?' If nothing happens, no harm done; you just learn a little more about the Bible, but if Jesus does show you who He is, it will change your life forever and your eternity." Note: that it is good to have a Gospel of John on you to give them, or you can show them on your phone. Finally, you will encounter those who are closed off. They will often answer the questionnaire, but not want to continue talking. That is fine. We don't kick down doors the Holy Spirit has left closed. Regardless of when the conversation comes to a close, be sure to thank them for their time, and let them know you really appreciate them sharing. Above All Remember We are simply called to be faithful. That means sharing the Gospel with dependence on the Holy Spirit. God is the one who saves them not us. Don't get discouraged if the seed falls on hard ground. Prayer is the fountainhead from which all ministry flows. Be prayed up before evangelizing, pray for God to lead you to the right people, and pray for people after you share. We suggest always going out in pairs so that one person can be praying while the other is talking.
Draw out the Bridge Illustration and ask, "On which side do you see yourself?"
After someone trusts in Christ: Ask, "Where is Jesus in relation to you?" Give them a Bible if they don't have one, and write down that date in their Bible. Do a 24 hr and 7 day call back. Five Teaching Steps: Scriptures (21 Day Challenge in John) Prayer (A.C.T.S) Fellowship (get in community with believers) Witness for Christ (within 24 hours) Worship (Bible Preaching Church Home) Good Follow-Up WebsiteSomethingamazing.net/moving-forward/Startingwithgod.com
Five Closing Steps Qualifying Question - Does this make sense to you? Is there anything that I can clarify? Commitment Question - Is there any reason that you would not repent and trust in Jesus right now? Clarification of Commitment - ABCs - Admit that you are a sinner; Believe that Jesus lived the perfect life, died on the cross for your sins, and rose again from the dead; Confess that you need Him to be your Savior and Lord. Does that express the desire of your heart? Prayer of Commitment - Pray through the ABCs; there is nothing magical about this prayer; it is simply expressing the desire of your heart to God. Immediate Follow-Up - pray with them, have them tell someone within 24 hours, disciple them, etc. (See episode 17 for more info.)

Minute-To-Witness Instructions There was a time in my life when... (20 sec; two adjectives to describe your life before Christ) Then someone shared a story with me that changed my life... (20 sec; brief Gospel message) After trusting in Christ... (20 sec; after Christ how life has changed, be honest) Do you have a story like that? Overview Flashback Instructions (for those who came to Christ at a young age) Someone shared a story with me that changed my life... (20 sec; brief Gospel message) After Trusting in Christ... (20 sec; after Christ how life has changed, including hardships) Because of this, I have seen in my life (20 seconds; things that didn't happen because of Christ's sustainment) Do you have a story like that?
Six Tips for Caring Well:1) Take a genuine interest in others. (John 13:34)2) Smile and look them in the eye. (Proverbs 15:13)3) Be a good listener, and encourage others to talk about themselves. (James 1:19)4) Remember to use their name. A person's name is the sweetest and most important sound in any language. (Proverbs 22:1)5) Talk in terms of the other person's interests. (Philippians 2:3-4)6) Show appreciation and do it sincerely. (1 Thessalonians 5:11)
One of God's primary methods for opening doors to share Christ is through caring. People don't care how much you know until they know that you care. So the question is, how do we care well in a way that God can use us for Gospel opportunities?
Many Christians struggle to share the Gospel in a natural way. How can we avoid those awkward conversations? How can we set the table to naturally lead to the Gospel?
What methods did Jesus use to share the good news, and how can we do the same?
Each one, reach one, each year. As Christians, how should we be planning for the new year in regards to sharing our faith?
It can be difficult to share with those who are close to us but continue to resist the Gospel. May this episode bring you some encouragement to continue praying for and sharing with family and friends during this Christmas season.

Doch was kommt danach? Die drei Parteien #LINKE, #AfD und CDU, die sich gegenseitig spinnefeind sind, werden zwischen 25 und knapp 30% erhalten. Die kleinen Parteien SPD, Grüne und vielleicht die FDP werden vermutlich keine #Mehrheitsbeschaffer sein können. Zwei der drei großen #Parteien werden miteinander müssen, wenn es nicht zu #Neuwahlen (mit vermutlich dem gleichen Ergebnis) kommen soll.

How much do Berlin’s bottle collectors earn? Our guest Wouter Bernhardt has done the math - it's a measly €150 a month. He thinks it amounts to a form of socially accepted poverty. Wouter is host of the Berlinology podcast. Listen to the full episode of 'The Bottle Collector' here: http://viertausendhertz.de/bln02/ The Berlin Senate has changed the AirBnB law to allow people to rent out their flats as holiday apartments for up to 60 days per year. Starting on May 1, you can obtain a registration number from the Bürgeramt, which must be displayed online. But you still risk getting evicted by your landlord for using your flat for commercial purposes. We talk to Jana Burbach and Niko Schulz-Dornburg, the writers of a new TV series about flat sharing in Berlin. The show is called Just Push Abuba, and it's the first English-language show produced by ZDF. Watch it online at: https://www.zdf.de/serien/just-push-abuba In February, Berlin passed a milestone: the Berlin wall has now been down for longer than it was up (28 years). At the same time, an opinion poll found that Die Linke became the most popular party in Berlin for the first time since 1990. The city's R2G coalition parties (Die Linke, SPD and Die Grünen) would get 57% of the vote. Are they doing a good job? Joel thinks so. Our guest Konrad Werner thinks they could do better. Some Berliners want to dramatically reduce advertising in the city. Berlin Werbefrei is an initiative collecting signatures to trigger a referendum. They propose eliminating ads on public buildings. It would reduce the Berlin's revenue by €31 million annually, or 0.1% of the state budget. Find out more at https://berlin-werbefrei.de
Comedian and journalist Drew Portnoy tells us about his return to Berlin after several years away. The city has grown by the equivalent of two Bonns in that time and is feeling much fuller. Berlin-based refugee rescue charity Jugend Rettet is in trouble. The organization's boat has been impounded by Italian authorities. Jugend Rettet says they are being bullied out of the Mediterranean. Are you a freelancer in Germany? Our guest Henrietta Mehlis from the SMart freelancers cooperative has some tips. Berlin is sending 28 representatives to the Bundestag after last week's elections. Here's the breakdown by party: CDU 6; Die Linke 6; SPD 5; Die Grünen 4; AFD 4; FDP 3. The Greens barely held on to Hans-Christian Ströbele's seat after infighting. The CDU's failed mayoral candidate Frank Henkel also failed to win a parliamentary seat. Berlin also voted 56.1% "yes" in the referendum on whether to keep Tegel Airport open. The R2G coalition now has to decide how to react - ignore the non-binding result, or try to please Tegel fans and face huge legal challenges from businesses, residents and environmental activists. Die Linke released a study finding 30% of all flights to Berlin could easily be replaced by train journeys. The offstage drama at the Volksbühne continues. Squatters occupied the theatre demanding that new director Chris Dercon be replaced by a collective directorship. They were evicted after rejecting a compromise to hold their art-action in the Grüne Salon. Dan names and shames a Berlin startup, Your Superfoods, which is begging for volunteers to pack boxes instead of paying for staff. This episode was presented by Maisie Hitchcock, Joel Dullroy and Daniel Stern, and recorded at the Comedy Cafe Berlin.
Berlin’s R2G coalition is in crisis after the mayor Michael Müller (SPD) forced the resignation of Andrej Holm, who had been picked by Die Linke as the city’s housing secretary. The sociologist was a controversial choice due to his radical anti-investor ideas, and also because when he was 18 years old he trained to become an officer for the Stasi, the secret police of East Germany. Holm has also now been fired from Humboldt University for failing to fully declare his Stasi past. Was it fair? Listen to our next live recording for a full discussion. The KaDeWe department store has been robbed yet again. On January 14 axe-wielding bandits broke through the doors, smashed glass cabinets and stole jewelry. In robbers held up KaDeWe during opening hours and sprayed teargas as they stole €800,000 worth of expensive watches. And in 2009, burglars broke in and stole jewelry worth €2 million. Evidence from a dropped glove led to the arrest of a pair of twins, but neither could convicted as their DNA was too similar. Police discovered the dismembered body of a 90-year old pensioner in the freezer of his apartment in Prenzlauer Berg. The body had been there for ten years. The neighbours said that they complained about a smell coming from the flat, but were ignored by both the building manager and the police. A man has been charged with the pensioner's murder. It's alleged he was making withdrawals from this bank account the whole time. Come along to our show on Sunday January 22, 6pm at the Comedy Cafe Berlin in Neukölln. This episode was presented by Joel Dullroy and Jöran Mandik, and brought to you by RadioEins, Berlin’s public broadcaster.
Should a man who once trained with the Stasi be allowed to run Berlin’s housing department? Professor Andrej Holm has been named city secretary for housing. He's been the most vocal critic of the city’s policies for many years, and advocates high taxation on real estate speculation. His critics say he shouldn't have such an important job because in 1989 he joined a Stasi training academy. His supporters say a person's mistake as an 18 year old shouldn't affect them 26 years later. Should the city install more security cameras, after that terrible kicking attack in an U-bahn station? Berlin was shocked by a video showing a man kicking a woman in the back, sending her flying down the stairs of the Hermannstrasse U-Bahn station. The man was caught on a bus after being recognized by a passenger. The new R2G has promised to reduce the number of surveillance cameras in public places. And should the city take free money to rebuild an imperial monument? The federal government wants to give Berlin €18.5M to rebuild the Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial. Why not build something new instead? Berlin still has an estimated 3000 unexploded WWII bombs under the surface. One was discovered this week between Neukölln and Treptow, causing the evacuation of 2600 residents. The city also has a lot of people in jail for not paying their public transport fines. Almost 10 percent of the city’s 4100 inmates are there for dodging train fares. Now the new justice senator, Dirk Behrend from the Greens, plans to roll back the policy of jailing so-called “Schwarzfahrer”. He wants to let them do community service instead. Michael Müller has been sworn in as Berlin’s mayor for a second term as head of the R2G coalition. But it hasn’t been the best week for the returning mayor. His top aide, Björn Böhning from the SPD, is being investigated for alleged corruption. The controversy is about a report written by the consulting company McKinsey into the city’s refugee situation in 2015. McKinsey originally said this would be done pro bono. But later Mr. Böhning authorized a payment of €237,000 to the consultants, one of whom was a former SPD party secretary. The mayor is supporting Mr. Böhning. The investigation continues. Residents of Neukölln and Wedding awoke this week to the first snow of the season. Meteorologists said the fine layer of white snow actually came from the city’s fossil fuel-fired power plants. Steam from the plants crystalized in the cold foggy air and fell to earth. They’re calling it “Industrieschnee.” Our next live show is on Sunday December 18 at the Comedy Cafe Berlin. Come along! This episode of Radio Spaetkauf was presented by Jöran Mandik and Daniel Stern, and was brought to you by RadioEins, Berlin’s public broadcaster.
While the rest of the world votes for crazy leaders and dumb ideas, Berlin's new coalition has just announced an amazing social program that makes this city even better. On this special 5th anniversary recording of Radio Spaetkauf, we remind ourselves why we came to Berlin, and why we plan to stay. There's plenty to talk about in the new red-red-green (R2G) coalition agreement, including more social housing, less automobiles and better bicycle infrastructure, but sadly no maglev to the airport. How will Berlin pay for it all? Our special guest Konrad Werner defends the government's plan to take on more debt to upgrade schools and hire more public servants. Also, we welcome Craig Schuftan, who together with his band Ducks! and musician Ray Mann created Radio Spaetkauf's new jingle. Radio Spaetkauf is hosted by Joel Dullroy, Maisie Hitchcock, Jöran Mandik and Daniel Stern.
