Eric Andersen is a legendary Troubadour and singer-songwriter who first came to prominence during the 1960s folk music scene in Greenwich Village and Boston. He was a central figure in that era which included Bob Dylan, Tom Paxton, Phil Ochs and Richard Fariña.Some of his famous early compositions were “Thirsty Boots,” “Violets of Dawn,” and “Close The Door Lightly When You Go”. These songs were picked up by artists like Judy Collins, the Brothers Four, the Kingston Trio, the Blues Project, Sandy Denny & Fairport Convention, and Johnny Cash.  Eric's songs have been covered by many artists, including Bob Dylan, Ricky Nelson, Janis Ian, Peter Paul and Mary, the Grateful Dead and Mary Chapin Carpenter. He is the subject of an award-winning 2019 documentary, The Songpoet. It is a collection of songs that I wrote over the years but never released. A few of them ended up on live albums but most of them were never recorded before. The songs do share a theme. It is about love in all its forms, including love for life itself and love for the planet.  The beautiful, difficult and dark aspects of love. I'm very proud of it. In the eleven years it took to make this album I didn't sit still. I did bring out three literary albums, around the works of Byron, Camus and Böll. They were recorded in Germany. At the moment I am working on albums about Lorca and Casanova.”—------------------------------------CONNECT WITH ERIC:www.ericandersen.com____________________ROBERT'S NEWEST ALBUM:“WHAT'S UP!” is Robert's new compilation album. We're celebrating our 10th anniversary all year by digging in the vaults to re-present classic episodes with fresh commentary. Today, we're revisiting our 2017 conversation with Vince Gill. ABOUT VINCE GILLMulti-instrumentalist, singer, and songwriter Vince Gill launched his solo career in the mid-1980s, hitting the Top 10 on Billboard's country singles chart a remarkable 25 times. All but one of those hits was written or co-written by Gill, and a dozen of his compositions have been nominated for either CMA Song of the Year, ACM Song of the Year, or the Best Country Song Grammy. These include “When I Call Your Name,” “Look At Us,” “Pocket Full of Gold,” “When Love Finds You,” “High Lonesome Sound,” “If You Have Forever in Mind,” “Feels Like Love,” and “Threaten Me With Heaven.” “Go Rest High on That Mountain” won both the CMA Song of the Year and the Best Country Song Grammy, while “I Still Believe in You” won the Best Country Song Grammy, as well as both the CMA and the ACM's Song of the Year awards. Though he's won four in total, Vince is the only songwriter to ever win three consecutive Song of the Year awards from the CMA. He has won more Grammy awards, with over 20 trophies, than any male country performer in history. These include two Best Country Song wins, as well as a 2017 win for Best American Roots Song for “Kid Sister,” which was recorded by Gill's band, The Time Jumpers. He has won eight ACM awards and 18 CMA awards, including Vocalist of the Year five years in a row and Entertainer of the Year two years in a row. Other highlights from his long list of hit singles include the #1 hits “Don't Let Our Love Start Slippin' Away,” “One More Last Chance,” and “Tryin' to Get Over You.” In addition to writing his own material, Vince's songs have been recorded by Loretta Lynn, Bob Seger, John Denver, Mary Chapin Carpenter, John Prine, Willie Nelson, Michael McDonald, LeAnn Rimes, and Alabama, who topped the country charts with his “Here We Are.” Vince was inducted into the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2005, and the Country Music Hall of Fame in 2007. In 2014, he was named a BMI Icon, one of only twelve country writers ever honored with the prestigious award.

What if grief isn't something you heal from? But rather, something you must learn to move forward with. In today's powerful episode, I sit down with singer, songwriter, and producer CARA for an incredibly raw and honest conversation about art, grief, and transformation. CARA opens up about her journey through personal tragedy, including the devastating loss of her brother and mother, and how she channeled her grief into the music for her upcoming autobiographical album, The Kronicles. This album features chapters from every corner of CARA's life—including her time in the cannabis industry and her friendship with the late Gangsta Boo of Three 6 Mafia, whose voice is featured IN the album in the song CARA KUSH, produced by CARA.We have an exploratory, raw and honest conversation about how creativity can be both an anchor and an outlet in times of pain, why “healing” from grief can be a misleading idea, and the importance of finding ways—big or small—to process emotions and keep moving forward. You're all going to laugh at me, but that's okay, cuz I'm I'm the one laughing hardest! I had planned an easy-peasy episode for yesterday, one which focused on two great 20th century bass-baritones who were both valued recitalists as well as composers! I'm talking about the faboo basses, Finnish Kim Borg, and Dutch Robert Holl, who also happened to be fantastic recitalists. I had the recordings on my collection; I just had to put them into an episode. But of course I began meditating on the question of the classical music version of the Singer-Songwriter and suddenly the episode had gone down a very different (and much more complicated) path. I came up with some fascinating examples beyond Borg and Holl (both of whom are still heard performing their songs on the episode!), all the way back to the Renaissance era and through to an incredibly impressive array of modern-day avant garde composer/performers. For starters: Barbara Strozzi and Pauline Viardot from days long past, but also figures like the great French baritone Jean-Baptiste Faure (anyone remember “The Palms”?), and those three intrepid tenors Tito Schipa, Richard Tauber, and Jean-Paul Jeannotte, and along the way not forgetting gay icons Jules Bledsoe and Harry Partch. Moving into the present-day, we encounter astonishing women composer/performers including pathbreakers Cathy Berberian, Joan La Barbara, Diamánda Galás, Laurie Anderson, and Meredith Monk, but also those intrepid women who have both taken inspiration from their models while carving out their own paths: Gilda Lyons, Martha Sullivan, Lisa Bielawa, and Caroline Shaw, among others. I'm thrilled that many of the singers, composers, or composer/performers are also friends of mine. Among those not mentioned above, stellar singers Sarah Pillow (singing Strozzi), and Anna Tonna (singing Viardot). Don't tell anyone, but you might even hear me singing something! Exciting news about this episode: There are more women composers heard here than male! Hope you didn't mind waiting for this one a little longer than usual! When you grow up in a rural part of New England your dreams of being anything in the media or the arts become practical, shaped by geography as much or more so than talent. For someone who aspires to share their music with the masses, the thought of Hollywood or Nashville seems like a distant pinpoint on a map rather than a destination for the dream. The sobering fact is, not too many musicians from the Northeastern reaches of the United States have broken through to national success. For every James Taylor or Ray LaMontagne, the musical landscape is littered by artists who dreamed big but didn't quite make it past the county line. Ben Fuller grew up on his family's dairy farm in southern Vermont. He began singing when he was young on the farm but didn't play his first show until 2017, when he was 30 years old, at a small local bar. But that was enough to fuel his passion for more. Soon thereafter, he packed up everything he had and headed to Nashville, determined to make his mark on the music industry. Playing every live venue that would give him stage time, Fuller eventually caught the ear of Provident Entertainment, who signed him to a recording contract in 2022. The rest as they say is history. In the last three years, Fuller has racked up two Dove Awards, a KLOVE Award, 53 million streams of his single “If I Got Jesus”, and performances at the Grand Ole Opry and the CMA Festival. He has just released his second album, “Walk Through Fire”, that features a collaboration with multi-platinum selling artist Carrie Underwood on a song called “If It Was Up to Me”. Fuller joins us to chat about growing up on a rural dairy farm in rural Vermont, what inspired him to take the big leap to start his music career in Nashville, and a fateful dinner with hometown friends that changed his life forever.

Despite family objections and countless music business rejections, what kept her going was turning every minus into a plus, taking every refusal to become better, and every hard situation to do something good for herself and others. Her turning point to fulfil her childhood dreams and to become a singer happened at the age of 26, while she was in a very unhappy marriage.A singing teacher immediately recognized her talent and thought that her low voice was reminiscent of Karen Carpenter. In 2007, Tally made the decision to make her first album and not to wait for the record company.Despite one of the top radio pluggers telling her that she doesn't have a chance to make it nationally, being over 40. She made the choice to listen to the words of her song “Beauty of The Duty “saying “the only thing that holds you back is you”. Her song became a National success on BBC Radio 3 weeks later. Well known indie artist Rebecca Pidgeon conceived of her upcoming release "Unillusion" (August 29th release)as a more relaxed and intimate recording from the start to contrast with the intricate, polished, layered sound of her most recent albums. When she discussed her ideas with Perdomo, he had her look at episodes of MTV Unplugged series and Rebecca decided then and there, "It felt like the right approach —minimal, human, with moments that are as stripped down as just voice and acoustic guitar." Pidgeon and Fernando went into the studio with a team of outstanding musicians: Perdomo (bass, electric guitar); Andy Studer (violin, viola), Eszter Balint (violin on "Monkey Man" and "Where is the Man"); Matt Tecu (drums); Rebecca on acoustic guitar and vocals. Together they recapture the unfiltered warmth and immediacy of her earliest recordings while showing impressive sonic evolution showcasing her ever-maturing songwriting. The album's lyric themes range from the epic to the deeply personal. Tracks like "Dasharatha" draw inspiration from the ancient Indian epic poem, the Ramayana, weaving timeless tales of jealousy, grief, and rebirth into contemporary idiom recalling work like Bob Dylan's "Isis" or PJ Harvey's retelling of the Biblical story of Samson and Delilah in "Hair." More personal tracks venture into raw, emotional territories, resonating with listeners on a deeply human level. We're celebrating our 10th anniversary all year by digging in the vaults to re-present classic episodes with fresh commentary. Today, we're revisiting our 2019 conversation with Valerie Simpson of Ashford & Simpson. ABOUT VALERIE SIMPSONSix-time Grammy nominee Valerie Simpson is best known as one half of the songwriting, production and performing duo of Ashford and Simpson, which she formed with musical partner and eventual husband Nick Ashford after they met at a church in Harlem, New York, in the early 1960s.  After early successes with Aretha Franklin's recording of “Cry Like a Baby” and Ray Charles' recordings of “Let's Go Get Stoned” and “I Don't Need No Doctor,” Nick and Valerie signed with Motown Records, first as songwriters, where their early successes included the hit singles “Ain't No Mountain High Enough” and “Your Precious Love,” recorded by Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell. They soon began both writing and producing for the duo, with hits such as “Ain't Nothing Like the Real Thing,” “You're All I Need to Get By,” “Good Lovin' Ain't Easy to Come By,” and “What You Gave Me.” Additional writing and production credits at Motown came with hits by The Supremes, The Marvelettes, The Miracles, Gladys Knight, and Diana Ross, who found success with “Reach Out and Touch (Somebody's Hand)” “Remember Me,” “Surrender,” and a remake of “Ain't No Mountain High Enough” that topped both the pop and R&B charts.   In addition to writing #1 hits such as Quincy Jones's “Stuff Like That” and Chaka Khan's “I'm Every Woman” after their Motown period, Ashford and Simpson began releasing their own recordings as a duo, landing nearly 40 songs on the Billboard R&B singles chart. Their list of Top 10 hits as artists, includes “It Seems to Hang On,” “Found a Cure,” “Love Don't Make it Right,” “Street Corner,” “Outta the World,” “Count Your Blessings,” “I'll Be There For You,” and “Solid.”   Ashford and Simpson were the recipients of the ASCAP Founder's Award, which is the highest honor bestowed by the organization. They were inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame, named among Rolling Stone Magazine's 100 Greatest Songwriters of All Time, and provided the inspiration for the establishment of the Soul Train Ashford & Simpson Songwriter's Award. Following Nick's untimely death in 2011, Valerie has continued to write, record, and even appear on Broadway in the acclaimed musical Chicago.
