Attention is where everything begins. It's our asset. May I go out on a limb and say it's our main asset? Or even further to the tip of the limb: it's our only asset. We get to choose where to place our attention. Attention management is what determines the direction of our life. In fact, a student of mine made me a beautiful sign for my birthday, and I have it hanging outside my office here on the wall. It says, "Where attention goes, energy flows." It's something I come back to again and again as a great reminder every time I walk in my room: where attention goes, energy flows. So that's why we say here, attention is where everything begins. In the Bhagavad-gītā, there is a beautiful verse in which Kṛṣṇa says, "yānti..."—you can go certain places. How do you do it? You place your attention there, and we're free to move about the universe. There are destinations beyond the universe. Can you go there? Yes. How do you do it? You move your attention in that direction. How do you know about it? Well, there are channels through which information comes about other universes, other planets. In fact, the first book my teacher wrote before he came to America is called Easy Journey to Other Planets. That caught my attention. I was in high school, and I thought, "That's a good idea. I would like to take an easy journey to another planet." It's not fantastical; it's reality. We move here, there, and everywhere because of our attention. So, this is a practice. Listening with rapt attention. As homework, if I may be so bold: try noticing how you attend to a subject matter. Notice. For instance, every night my wife and I get together to read. We read out loud and listen to one another reading. I find it a very bonding kind of practice and edifying, especially at the end of the day. I notice that there are different modes I can listen in as she's reading. I can drift off to other subjects, and then I'll have to go back and say, "What did you just read? Can you read that again?" Or, I can lean in. The National Institute of Standards and Technology's AI Safety Consortium will now be called the NIST Artificial Intelligence Consortium, the agency said Friday, continuing a shift in approach to the technology under President Donald Trump. According to NIST's announcement, the renamed group will retain some of its previous work but will change its scope. The group is also seeking new member organizations to carry out its aims. Craig Burkhardt, deputy NIST director, said in a statement included in the release. “To encourage more extraordinary AI technological innovations, NIST is seeking to expand its AI measurement efforts by harnessing the broader community's interests and capabilities.” The decision comes about a year after the Trump administration changed the name of NIST's AI Safety Institute, pivoting away from “safety.” That organization, which was originally established under the Biden administration, is now called the Center for AI Standards and Innovation. It's also the first news about the consortium in some time. The consortium was established in 2024 alongside the AI Safety Institute as a venue for input from companies, universities, and other organizations on measurement standards for AI safety. NIST is in the headlines once more this week, but not for reasons it's going to be excited about. Department of Commerce inspector general report released Thursday found that the National Institute of Standards and Technology has mismanaged a critical cybersecurity vulnerability database through poor planning, inefficient operations, duplicate federal programs, and failure to communicate with users. The National Vulnerability Database, maintained by NIST since 2005, collects information about computer security flaws and adds details like severity ratings and affected products. This information helps cybersecurity professionals across government and the private sector decide which security problems to fix first. In February 2024, the database's enrichment contract lapsed, creating a backlog of unprocessed security flaws that has only grown worse. The report identified the lack of strategic planning as a core problem. NIST leaders admitted they had no long-term plan for clearing the backlog, even as it grew from about 13,000 unprocessed security flaws in June 2024 to over 27,000 by the end of 2025. NIST publicly promised in May 2024 that it would clear the backlog by September 2024, setting a goal of processing 6,200 security flaws per month, but the agency had never processed more than 5,000 per month in the past. So given the nature of the show and the game played by the AW team, change is a coming for 2011, as the following films were mentioned over the courses of lengthy discussions over every category; Weekend, Contagion, Shame, Melancholia, Crazy Stupid Love, Take Shelter, Killer Joe, The Skin I Live In, 50/50, as well as films that were already nominees getting more love like Moneyball, The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, Warrior, The Tree of Life, Drive, Bridesmaids, and more. In their in-depth discussion, the AW team talked about the film year of 2011, briefly discuss talk about The Artist as a Best Picture winner, and how that speaks to the legacy of their nominates and or wins, do an extensive conversation over the below the line categories and nominees for the year, and then the new version of the AW Shoulda Woulda Coulda game, where instead of individual replacements, they must decide as a group who the nominees and winners should be in the top eight categories. The rules of the game state they can only replace two of the nominees that year from each category, except in Best Picture, where the group could replace up to four films to make up the final set of five nominated films. Why were we in Nairobi joining an anti-imperialist conference and then a street protest against the France-Africa summit in the first place? What is France's interest in Kenya, and what is the Kenyan government's role in Nato and in the African front of WW3? And what can three days and nights in police cells teach us about the nature of the Kenyan state and its relationship to its own people? What do the conditions and processes we experienced there reveal about the nature of neocolonial rule in Africa? One other notable aspect of our incarceration was that while it was major news in Kenya and some other parts of the world, the British media, British political establishment AND the British 'left' (antiwar movement, trade union movement, 'independent' media, various 'communist' and 'socialist' parties) all maintained a strict silence over the event. No one here seemed remotely interested in highlighting the unlawful locking up of a British citizen and anti-imperialist activist in a nation that is known to be a close 'ally' (proxy) of Britain. Meanwhile, the political nature of our detention was made very clear to us, since the Kenyan state had to break its own constitution and the police had to override all their own procedures to keep us locked up for so long without bringing us to court. It was made clear that the orders came from 'on high', but HOW high? Were those giving the orders inside or OUTSIDE the country? The fight for freedom and sovereignty in Kenya and Africa continue, and our comrades in the CPM Kenya are building a broad movement that aims to carry through the national-democratic revolution that was denied the people in 1963. Their activities and the growing anger of the impoverished masses has clearly put fear into the ruling comprador elite and their imperialist paymasters.
