The Union Steamships come to Whaletown

Roy L Hales/ Cortes Currents - When the Union Steamship company started operations, in 1889, there was a single ship servicing Burrard Inlet. Three years later they expanded their market to include the canneries, logging camps and small communities springing up along the coast. The first reference to a ship stopping in Whaletown is found in an 1899 story in the VANCOUVER PROVINCE.  “There was  an elderly gentleman from Whaletown who had come down on the ship for medical reasons. He'd been ill for some time. His name was Hitchcock and I have actually found no listing of him in the gazettes or the early census listing. I have no idea what his occupation was, whether he was a logger or a farmer,” explained Lynne Jordan, former President of the Cortes Island Museum and author of a manuscript about Whaletown's history. She mentioned steamships with names like the ‘Comox,' the ‘Coquitlam' and the ‘Chelosin.'  A lot of people called the latter ‘Charlie Olson' because it was easier to say than ‘Chelosin.' Most ships came to in Whaletown at some point, often going to Mansons Landing either before or afterward. Other ships serviced Squirrel Cove and the Eastern side of Cortes Island.  Big wharfs were built to accomodate those big steamships, in many rural coastal communities.  Whaletown was no different. There was a small, long wharf when Moses Ireland owned the property. After he left, in 1893, the Drinkwaters added a small store and post office off what is now Bayview Road. The Thompsons “ … built a bigger wharf so that the ships could come in more easily and safely to unload In downtown. It was considered downtown because so many things that were there. There was the store, of course, and eventually there was fuel supplies, but there was also the post office, the library, the church, the clinic and the school just up the road,” explained Jordan.  “The Union Steamships really were a necessity of life for all those living along the coast. They were the connection to the outside world and they delivered supplies that had been ordered from stores and places in Vancouver.”

The Jim Pattison Group has grown over the years to now employ more than 51,000 people. It started more than 60 years ago with a three-pump gas station and a two-car showroom. On the latest edition of Today in BC, Jim Pattison explains he worked hard as an entrepreneurial teenager. “Before high school, I used to sell garden seeds door-to-door in the springtime and so then I got into selling magazine subscriptions for the Saturday Evening Post and the Ladies Home Journal," he said. "Then after that, I got a job working for the Vancouver Province, after school on the late edition.” With a $40,000 loan from the Royal Bank, Pattison was able to open a new Pontiac dealership, his first in 1961. As his businesses flourished, Pattison was involved in a wide variety of investments, including two hockey teams in the fledgling World Hockey Association, the Vancouver Blazers and the Calgary Cowboys. The league began in 1972 and folded in 1979. “I think it failed because the teams really didn't have financial sound owners," said Pattison. "They couldn't last. The NHL was THE league and this was the junior league. They didn't get the attendance and of course, to get the players, you had to have a lot of money. Other than the folks in Toronto they had money behind them, but the rest of us didn't have much money.” Pattison Group has 30 operating divisions, including the auto, grocery, media and entertainment industries. Pattison says that the COVID-19 pandemic has affected almost everything. “The whole distribution system and supply for manufacturing all over the country has some degree of trouble and it is a very big issue," he said. "We're gaining ground as far as supply is concerned, but the number one issue today is the supply to factories and then the factories to the retailers. Some industries are better than others, but the whole industry today, that at least the things we're involved in, the trouble is supply - everything is gaining ground, but overall we still are not back to normal in most businesses.” When asked about whether he thinks about retiring, the 92-year-old replied: “I have never thought about it. Not once. If you like what you do, why would you quit?” If you have suggestions or comments, send a voice message to podcast@blackpress.ca you may be part of our audio podcast mailbag segment.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Ambrose J. Small was a wealthy theater manager who disappeared without a trace on the evening of December 2, 1919 near one of his theaters in Toronto, Ontario. There was no shortage of theories and possibilities as to what happened. Was it the long-suffering wife? The obsessive, clingy mistress? The secretary who had robbed him? Or someone else? El Paso mass shooting (suspect Patrick Crusius admits targeting Mexicans). And remarkable experience at Dallas airport. From Gillam, Manitoba, from where he has been reporting for Global News, we're joined by GN reporter Joe Scarpelli. Gun violence and societal violence is a public health issue. So declares Dr. Gary Slutkin, epidemiologist, former hea of the World Health Organization's Intervention Development Unit and Professor of Epidemiology and Interventional Health at the University of Illinois/Chicago School of Public Health. Dr. Slutkin is the founder of the international NGO Cure Violence launched in one of the most violent sections of Chicago and saw shootings reduced 67% in its first year.  The Cure Violence program has been adopted internationally (including in Canada - Halifax and Alberta). The federal Liberals have named their candidate to oppose now independent MP and former Liberal attorney general and Minister of Justice Jody Wilson-Raybould in the riding of Vancouver-Granville.  The Liberals candidate will be Taleeb Noormohamed, a previous Liberal candidate in a different Vancouver riding (he lost). Noormohamed also worked in the Privy Council Office during the terms of Jean Chretien and Paul Martin as Prime Ministers.  So what is likely to happen in Vancouver-Granville on October 21? Manitobans will hear in days when they will vote for their next provincial government. A precursor to October 21 federally? The Roy Green Show Podcast - The Saskatchewan Court of Appeal decided 3-2 against the province's challenge. They ruled that the federal government has the constitutional right to impose a carbon tax on the province.  Now Saskatchewan will appeal to the Supreme Court of Canada. Premier Scott Moe joins Roy to give his thoughts on what is next, and on the division in Canada. Meanwhile, Dan Kelly, President and CEO of the Canadian Federation of Independent Business, was extremely disappointed by the ruling. He has written an op-ed piece in which he says Ottawa is leaving small businesses to pay the heaviest price for its climate agenda.  Is Canada closing in on a real constitutional crisis? If Alberta, its new Premier and his government decides to put Bill B-12 in play and close the taps to oil shipments from the province to British Columbia, we may very well be. But such a move would be in retaliation for the B.C. government's opposition to TMX and increased pipelines crossing the province from Alberta to tidewater for export to international markets. We ask two opinion journalists – Lorne Gunter from Alberta and Mike Smyth from British Columbia – for their takes on the provincial tensions, how we got here and what might come next. During a protest against the Ford government some protestors brought out a guillotine and staged a mock execution of Ontario Premier Doug Ford at Queens Park in Toronto. The Premier and his government have spoken out against this action, as have as other politicians like federal NDP MP Charlie Angus. The father of an autistic student sent an email to the provincial NDP leader and a teacher's union leader, describing how the mock execution is causing extreme distress for his son who considers Premier Ford to be his friend. The Angus Reid Institute writes, following national polling, that Liberal support continues to drop as left-of-centre voters search for alternatives. - Guests: Scott Moe, Premier of Saskatchewan Dan Kelley, President and of the CEO: Canadian Federation of Independent Business Lorne Gunter, Edmonton Sun Mike Smyth, Vancouver Province & CKNW Steve Smith,  Father of autistic teen Ian Holliday, Angus Reid Institute Research Associate. The Roy Green Show - Maxime Bernier and his People's Party of Canada will face the electorate in Monday's federal byelections in Burnaby South, B.C. - as well as in byelections in Outremont, Quebec and York Simcoe, Ontario. This is the first A first real test for the People's Party of Canada, in its quest to form the national government in the October 21, federal election. PPC founder and leader Maxime Bernier Democracy Watch co-founder and law professor Duff Conacher continues to challenge the involvement of federal ethics commissioner Mario Dion in the Trudeau - Wilson-Raybould issue. Dion was appointed by the Trudeau cabinet and without engagement by the opposition parties as required by the Canada Parliament Act. Conacher write that "any committee of MPs is a Kangaroo Court, as they are all partisan.  Fully independent investigation needed."  He joins Roy to expand on this. Brian Peckford was Premier of Newfoundland and Labrador for twelve years.  Mr. Peckford, in two blog pieces this week, is very critical of the use of the Clerk of the Privy Council to defend the federal government in the Trudeau/Wilson-Raybould/SNC-Lavalin/PMO issue and particularly the CBC for its reporting of the situation. The National Energy Board gave TMX the green light, and there is a developing scandal in the B.C. legislature. Roy brings on CKNW host Mike Smyth to cover these issues and address how the byelection in Surrey could decide the fate of NDP leadership. Jussie Smollett continues to insist he is telling the truth, that he is the victim of a racist attack, and he has hired a legal defense to take his "I'm innocent" position to court. Meanwhile Smollett has been charged criminally as the perpetrator of a racist hoax, and was directly challenged by the Chicago Police Commissioner. Many, like Democrat Senators Kamala Harris and Cory Booker, tweeted their immediate support for Smollett and his claim. And some voices are saying Smollett's case should still be used to attract attention to the hate directed toward the LGBTQ and black communities. The Roy Green Show Podcast - Global News analysis reveals provinces across Canada largely fail to successfully tackle these financial crimes, with roughly three quarters of people accused going free.  The conviction rate is about 27%.  "It's scandalous" said forensic accountant Matt McGuire, who previously worked for FINTRAC, Canada's watchdog against money laundering.  "It's quite clear the system isn't working. It's mind boggling." Roy is joined by Andrew Russel, the national online investigative journalist with Global News who covered this story. In B.C., opinion is strongly in favour of a public inquiry into organized crime and money laundering in the province. In fact, in a province-wide poll conducted by IPSOS for Global News, a B.C. money laundering public inquiry is backed by every demographic that was asked. Roy speaks with CKNW host and columnist with the Vancouver Province Mike Smyth, and later with Vice President of IPSOS Sean Simson The campaign for the October 21 federal election is clearly unofficially already underway. Two key regions in Canada for the vote are the Western provinces and Quebec. Angus Reid polling continues its review of Western Canadian attitude with its most recent polling release showing voters west of Ontario are open to a new 'Western Canada Party.'  What does the poll reveal and what are the broader implications of the numbers? Leger polling in Quebec shows the Trudeau Liberals have a very comfortable lead among Quebec voters, while Andrew Scheer's Conservatives manages only to effectively come in tied with the separatist and resurgent Bloc Quebecois. What's going in Quebec? Do you have a common cold or the flu? That is the same question we find ourselves asking every year around this time. Jaston Tetro, a.k.a. “The Germ Guy,” explains how to tell the difference. And according to Global News, Measles cases tripled in Europe last year, reaching the highest it's been in a decade. They both have enthusiastically tied their flags to the project. And what should we expect from the upcoming by-election in Burnaby for federal NDP leader Jagmeet Singh. Could Singh lose and throw the party into leadership chaos? Tuesday's vote in the British parliament could sink the government of Prime Minister Theresa May and possibly lead to a general election and a repeat of the Brexit referendum.  Some of May's own Conservative MPs and the speaker of the British parliament have turned on her. Canada is meanwhile holding informal trade talks with the U.K. which would become formal if Britain exits the EU at the end of March. Former Alberta Prosecutor Scott Newark weighs in on the story, and shares his experience working with the Toronto Sex Crimes division of the Toronto police. And then we turn our attention to Canada's new drunk driving law. Yesterday Toronto criminal lawyer Ari Goldkind defended police having the right to demand a breathalyzer at your home up to two hours after you're alleged to have driven.  If you drove sober, had a drink or two in the two hours after you arrived home and a breathalyzer is required by law, you could find yourself charged with DUI. Angus Reid is somebody who found a way to make his dream a reality. Angus has just recently retired from professional football after playing 13 years for the BC Lions of the Canadian Football League. The Richmond Born native played in 200 professional games placing him in the top 5 all time for games played by a BC Lion. Throughout his career, Angus has been a 3-time all-star, 2-time Grey Cup Champion and 5-time team captain. A long shot to make it. Too short and way too small by all pro football measurables, Angus beat the odds. He didn't even begin playing football until the eleventh grade. He then missed three of his five collegiate seasons with a severe stomach ailment, making it back for his senior season and becoming only the 6th All American in school history. Angus became the 4th overall pick in the 2001 CFL college draft by the Toronto Argonauts, only to be cut by them following his first training camp. It has been through sheer relentlessness and determination that Angus was able to not only fulfill his seemingly impossible dream, but also be able to do it longer than almost anybody else. Today Angus has become much more than simply a football star. He is a true fixture in his community. He has written a weekly newspaper column for the Vancouver Province, hosted a radio show on the team 1040 and is currently the host of Global TV's "CrimeStoppers" and "The Monday Morning Blitz". He speaks non-stop across both Canada and the U.S to businesses, schools and Sports teams on what it really takes to make your dreams a reality. He lives with his wife and son in metro Vancouver.

Business Coaching with Join Up Dots

Book publishing is really hot at the moment with many people trying to find th book publishing fastrack to Amazon success. Well my guest today, on the Steve Jobs inspired Join Up Dots free podcast interview is Julie Broad, a lady spinning many different plates at one time. And I guess that is when a entrepreneur really comes into their own and this guest does it better than most with the ability to both diversify in the subjects that they are passionate about. She is an Amazon #1 Best Selling Author and International Book Award winner, recipient of the Top 20 under 40 award for Vancouver Island, a successful entrepreneur, recognized real estate investor and a popular speaker and workshop trainer. She's been speaking on stages large and small across Canada since 2009, sharing her simple and strategic systems for having more impact & influence in your life and business. She's appeared as a guest on numerous news programs including CTV, Global TV, DayTime Ottawa and CFax 1070 and featured in publications such as Yahoo!Canada, Entrepreneur.com, Ottawa Citizen, Toronto Sun and The Vancouver Province. She is also a regular contributing writer for Canadian Real Estate Wealth's Magazine. But once gain as we have seen recently on Join Up Dots, where she really comes into her own is by having the ability to tell stories that converts information into sales. She's an expert on helping people who aren't naturally born to sell, get results, make an impact and ultimately make more money (for their company and for themselves!). Sharing proven techniques for better communication, productivity and persuasion, She always leaves people inspired, excited and with clear steps to take action immediately. So out of all the things that fill her time what would be the one that she feels really pulls it all together and become her personal brand? Book publishing or her coaching business. And I suppose the big question as we have her on the show, is what does she find is the number one thing that holds people back from finding similar success? Well lets find out as we bring onto the show to start joining up dots with the one and only Julie Broad Show Highlights During the show we discussed such weighty topics with Julie Broad such as: How she discovered that people do not want perfection from coaches and speakers, but they do want people that they can relate to on a personal level. Why she made the bold decision to leave the job that she had worked so hard to create, due to discovering that it wasn't the money that she really wanted in her life How she started creating her new business and the steps she has taken to bring it to the world, (and the people who need it most) and lastly…. Why selling doesn't need to be hard, and in fact working on the basis of "Not fit" can sometimes encourage results like never before. Book publishing has never been easier

This week's episode features everyone's favourite astrologer, Georgia Nicols! Georgia explains that intuition isn't part of her approach to astrology and illuminates the mathematical approach to astrology. We talk about how she got started in her work, Linda Goodman's sun signs, the Ephemeris and the ridicule that even she experiences as a "soft science" practitioner. Georgia Nicols's wisdom and wit have made her a popular international astrologer whose horoscope columns appear in the National Post, Vancouver Province, Calgary Herald, Winnipeg Free Press, Victoria Daily News, Chicago Sun-Times, Press Democratic (Santa Rosa, California), China Daily (Beijing), and San Miguel (Mexico) as well as smaller weekly and monthly publications. She is a regular columnist in Elle Canada, The San Francisco Examiner, Washington Examiner (D.C.), and The Examiner (Baltimore), among others.
