No one has seen Comet Halley in decades. Even so, it’s reminding us of its presence about now. That’s because it’s responsible for the Eta Aquarid meteor shower. The shower is predicted to reach its peak tomorrow night, with top rates of about 40 or 50 meteors per hour. A meteor shower occurs when Earth passes through the orbital path of a comet. As a comet nears the Sun, some of the ice at its surface vaporizes in the heat. That releases small bits of rock and dust. Over time, this “comet dust” spreads out along the comet’s orbit. When Earth intersects the orbit, some of the debris slams into the atmosphere at tens of thousands of miles per hour – forming the glowing streaks known as meteors. The Eta Aquarids are one of two showers that are caused by Halley. The other takes place in October. Our planet passes a little deeper into the debris field in May, so this shower is better. Yet we’re a long way from the center of Halley’s trail – catching the fringe of a trail of comet dust. The shower is in better view from the southern half of the country. That’s because the point at which the meteors appear to “rain” into the atmosphere stays low in the south. To see the Eta Aquarids, find a dark, safe skywatching site, away from city lights. The best view comes in the wee hours of the morning. The Moon will be out of the way then, making it easier to see the “shooting stars” from Halley’s Comet. Script by Damond Benningfield

They will not labor in vain. (Isaiah 65:17, 22-23)I talk a lot about the work God's Word promises we will do for eternity. But I know this is a wild and new idea for many. If that's you, let me bring you up to speed in three bullets:Nobody will spend eternity “in heaven.” God promises to bring heaven to earth and to dwell with us here forever (see Revelation 21:1-5).While the present heaven is marked by rest (see Revelation 14:13), the New Earth is marked by active service and worship (see Revelation 22:3-5).We will worship God not just by singing but by long enjoying the work of our hands (see Isaiah 65:17-23).With those foundational truths under our feet, I'll use the rest of this series to share 5 biblical truths about the nature of work on the New Earth. The first is seen clearly in today's passage: We who are in Christ will delight in our work for eternity. Why? Because we will be with God fully (see Revelation 21:1-5) and our work will be free from the curse of sin (see Revelation 22:3). Which is exactly what God intended from the beginning (see Genesis 1:26-28)!It's hard to imagine how glorious this will be. Thankfully, Rudyard Kipling imagined it for us in a beautiful poem I've hung on my office wall:When Earth's last picture is painted,And the tubes are twisted and dried,When the oldest colors have faded,And the youngest critic has died,We shall rest, and faith, we shall need it,Lie down for an aeon or two,'Till the Master of All Good WorkmenShall put us to work anew. . . .And no one shall work for the money. And no one shall work for fame. But each for the joy of the working,And each, in his separate star,Shall draw the Thing as he sees It For the God of Things as They are!But that could be way off in the future. What does this mean for your work today? Let me suggest a practical response to the truth that we will one day delight in our work for eternity.First, make a physical or digital list of things you hate about your current work. Difficulty hearing God's voice, co-workers who can't meet deadlines, the exhaustion that comes from grinding just to make ends meet, etc.Second, put a line through the middle of each item and write “Isaiah 65” at the top of your list as a means of physically representing the hope of today's passage. Finally, pray every time you see the list. Pray for relief from those thorns and thistles. Praise God for how these challenges drive you to him. And praise him for the promise that one day, you will “long enjoy” your work free from these current frustrations.

Hello Interactors,I recently read an intriguing article about unexpected forms of life thriving deep within the Earth's crust. These discoveries are revitalizing environmental theories and processes that mainstream science has long tried to dismiss—yet I've been exploring them over the past few summers. While working outside, I realized that some of these processes are unfolding right under my nose...and possibly even inside it!On that note, this might sound a bit awkward, but...Let's dig in!WORLDWIDE WEATHERING WHISPERSI'm behind on my pressure washing. This can have detrimental effects here in the predominantly damp Northwest as moss spores, tiny lightweight travelers, are lifted and lofted by the wind's wings until they land on damp concrete. A new home for moss to roam.Upon contact, the spores absorb moisture and germinate, developing into a protonema — fine lines of sprawling verdant vines. As the structure crawls through the creviced concrete an anchored lace unfolds. Atop it grows a carpet of green and gold, down below tentacles grab hold. The rhizoid roots anchor mounding moss, absorbing food and water nature has tossed. As the concrete crumbles into nutrient stores, the soft moss blossoms with chromophores. Over time, atop the luscious mountains and rocky moistened pours, the wind releases more lofting spores. It turns out the contrasting boundary between soft squishy plants and hard concrete is as pronounced as the divisions between the disciplines of biology and geology. But advances in Earth System Science are starting blur these boundaries, as integrative science tends to do. Like moss softening concrete. My expansive moss colonies, part of the plant kingdom, house communities of tiny microorganisms like bacteria, fungi, and microscopic animals like rotifers and tardigrades. Many of these communities have symbiotic relationships with moss. For example, some bacteria promote moss growth through the production of the plant growth hormone auxin using specific enzymes in plant tissues. As the moss and its associated microbes grow and expand, they can penetrate small cracks or pores in the concrete, potentially widening them and exposing more surface area to weathering processes. This can be accelerated by certain bacteria and fungi that produce organic acids as metabolic byproducts. These acids can slowly dissolve or weaken calcium carbonate and other minerals found in concrete. The biogeochemistry contributing to rock weathering and sediment formation reveals the intricate connections between biological processes and geological phenomena. At massive space and time scales they can not only affect the meteorological conditions above ground, but also the layers of sediment below ground. In a recent New York Times piece, Ferris Jabr, author of “Becoming Earth: How Our Planet Came to Life” reveals how“Within the forest floor [of the Amazon rainforest], vast symbiotic networks of plant roots and filamentous fungi pull water from the soil into trunks, stems and leaves. As the nearly 400 billion trees in the Amazon drink their fill, they release excess moisture, saturating the air with 20 billion tons of water vapor each day. At the same time, plants of all kinds secrete salts and emit bouquets of pungent gaseous compounds. Mushrooms, dainty as paper parasols or squat as door knobs, exhale plumes of spores. The wind sweeps bacteria, pollen grains and bits of leaves and bark into the atmosphere. The wet breath of the forest — peppered with microscopic life and organic residues — creates conditions that are highly conducive to rain. With so much water vapor in the air and so many minute particles on which the water can condense, clouds quickly form. In a typical year, the Amazon generates around half of its own rainfall.”Below ground, he describes work by Earth scientist Robert Hazen and colleagues.“When Earth was young, microbes inhabiting the ocean crust were likely dissolving the basalt with acids and enzymes in order to obtain energy and nutrients, producing wet clay minerals. By lubricating the crust with those wet byproducts, the microbes may have accelerated the dissolution of both mantle and crust and their eventual transfiguration into new land. The geophysicists Dennis Höning and Tilman Spohn have published similar ideas. They point out that water trapped in subducting sediments escapes first, whereas water in the crust is typically expelled at greater depths. The thicker the sedimentary layer covering the crust, the more water makes it into the deep mantle, which ultimately enhances the production of granite. In Earth's earliest eons, micro-organisms and, later, fungi and plants dissolved and degraded rock at a rate much greater than what geological processes could accomplish on their own.In doing so, they would have increased the amount of sediment deposited in deep ocean trenches, thereby cloaking subducting plates of ocean crust in thicker protective layers, flushing more water into the mantle and ultimately contributing to the creation of new land.”LOVELOCKS LIVING LOOPSThis kind of Earth System Science has been given a name by one of first contributors, James Lovelock — geophysiology. Lovelock describes geophysiology as a systems approach to Earth sciences, viewing Earth as a self-regulating entity where biological, chemical, and physical processes interact to maintain conditions suitable for life. It integrates various scientific disciplines to understand and predict the behavior of Earth's systems, aiming to diagnose and prevent environmental issues by considering the planet as a cohesive, self-regulating system. This concept, rooted in Lovelock's initial Gaia hypothesis, emphasizes the feedback mechanisms that stabilize Earth's environment, akin to physiological processes in living organisms. Gaia is named after the primordial Greek goddess who personifies the Earth. This naming occurred in the context of Lovelock developing his ideas about Earth as a self-regulating system in the 1960s and early 1970s.Lovelock had been working on methods to detect life on Mars at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, which led him to consider how life might be detected on a planetary scale. This work eventually evolved into his hypothesis about Earth functioning as a complex, self-regulating system maintained by the community of living organisms. As Lovelock was formulating these ideas, he was looking for a suitable name for his hypothesis. It was during this time that William Golding, Lovelock's neighbor and renowned author of "Lord of the Flies", suggested using the name "Gaia".In Greek mythology, Gaia is considered the ancestral mother of all life and one of the first beings to emerge from earliest chaotic stages of Earth's formation. She is often depicted as a maternal, nurturing figure who gave birth to the Titans, the Cyclopes, and other primordial deities. Gaia is associated with fertility, the earth's abundance, and the cycle of life and death. In ancient Greek religion, Gaia was worshipped as the Great Mother and was sometimes referred to as "Mother Earth." That title, and her influence, extends beyond Greek mythology, perpetuating the concept of Earth as a living, nurturing entity — a concept that has resonated in various cultures for Millenia.Elements of the Greek notion of Gaia likely have roots in earlier Middle Eastern knowledge.  Several ancient cultures had earth goddesses that predate or are contemporaneous with the Greek Gaia. For instance, in Mesopotamia, Sumerian mythology offers Ki is the earth goddess, and in Akkadian mythology, there is Ninhursag. It turns out “Mother Earth” birthed similar concepts all around her. Egypt had Isis, Anatolia (modern-day Turkey) had Cybele, India's Hinduism had Parvati and Durga, Pre-Columbian American cultures featured Pachamama, Celtic cultures had Danu and Brigid, while Norse mythology features Frigg and Freyja. In 1960's and 70's America, “Mother Nature” and “Gaia” emerged among some environmentalists as New Age mystical beliefs associated with alternative spiritualities. Lovelock's decision to use the word “Gaia” thus made him and his ideas a target among many Western trained scientists and his Earth system concepts endured harsh criticisms. It's worth mentioning that when Alexander Humboldt put forth similar ideas in his book "Cosmos" (first published in 1845), taking a holistic view of nature, exploring connections between various Earth systems and life forms, he was heralded as the greatest scientist of his time. Even Charles Darwin took a copy of Cosmos with him on his famous Beagle voyage. Humboldt, like Lovelock, uniquely and successfully integrated knowledge from diverse fields like astronomy, geology, biology, meteorology, and even art and literature. But the specialization, reductionism, and quantification of dominant Western science distanced itself from these holistic approaches viewing them as too spiritual and outdated. By the twentieth century, the growing New Age interpretation of Gaia often personified the Earth as a conscious, living entity, drawing on both Lovelock's scientific hypothesis and ancient mythological concepts. Many modern religions and philosophical concepts about the origin of life still incorporate anthropomorphic elements, such as the idea of a creator with human-like qualities or intentions. These mainstream images can lead to engrained tendencies to see humans and other living organisms as being born:* into a world as separate entities from the world they inhabit* onto a physical plane as a separate, tangible reality* unto which they individually acquire and consume energy to live and grow. This perspective sees living beings as somewhat separate from their environment, rather than as integral parts of a larger system. It's a view consistent with traditional Western science that emphasizes reductionist approaches, breaking systems down into component parts. But it contrasts with more holistic perspectives, such as those found in ecological theories like Geophysiology, other branches of Earth System Science, or Traditional Ecological Knowledge which see earth's components, including humans, as inseparable parts of their environments. This was confirmed at the 2001 Amsterdam Declaration, signed by the Chairs of the International Geosphere-Biosphere Program (IGBP), International Human Dimensions Program (IHDP), World Climate Research Program (WCRP) and DIVERSITAS at the 2001 ‘Challenges of a Changing Earth' conference. The declaration concluded:“The Earth System behaves as a single, self-regulating system comprised of physical, chemical, biological and human components, with complex interactions and feedbacks between the component parts.”Integrative Western scientists have now amassed enough data to recognize that living matter is born:* into a living, interconnected Earth system,* onto a dynamic web of relationships,* unto which we belong as integral participants, exchanging energy and matter in a continuous cycle of life and growth. In this view, my moss colonies and their microbial companions emerge as vital threads, weaving together the living and non-living elements of our planet. These intricate communities, from the tiniest bacteria to the visible expanse of moss, exemplify the self-regulating nature of Earth's systems that Lovelock envisioned. As they slowly transform concrete through their metabolic processes, they participate in the larger process of biogeochemical cycling. They influence not only my cinderblock walls and concrete surfaces, but they also contribute to the broader patterns of weathering, sedimentation, and even microclimate regulation. This interplay between the microscopic and the global, the biological and the geological, embodies the essence of Humboldt's and Lovelock's theory — a planet alive with interconnected processes, where every organism, no matter how small, plays a role in maintaining the delicate balance of life.In this living system, my moss and its microbiome, like me and the symbiotic communities of microorganisms in me and on me, are not mere passive inhabitants, but active agents in the ongoing story of Earth's evolution. Together we demonstrate the profound interconnectedness that defines our planet's unique capacity for self-regulation and adaptation. Now where's my pressure washer? This is a public episode. Such an alignment occurs approximately every six months, during the eclipse season in its new moon phase, when the Moon's orbital plane is closest to the plane of Earth's orbit. In a total eclipse, the disk of the Sun is fully obscured by the Moon. In partial and annular eclipses, only part of the Sun is obscured. Unlike a lunar eclipse, which may be viewed from anywhere on the night side of Earth, a solar eclipse can only be viewed from a relatively small area of the world. As such, although total solar eclipses occur somewhere on Earth every 18 months on average, they recur at any given place only once every 360 to 410 years. If the Moon were in a perfectly circular orbit and in the same orbital plane as Earth, there would be total solar eclipses once a month, at every new moon. Instead, because the Moon's orbit is tilted at about 5 degrees to Earth's orbit, its shadow usually misses Earth. Solar (and lunar) eclipses therefore happen only during eclipse seasons, resulting in at least two, and up to five, solar eclipses each year, no more than two of which can be total. Total eclipses are rarer because they require a more precise alignment between the centers of the Sun and Moon, and because the Moon's apparent size in the sky is sometimes too small to fully cover the Sun. An eclipse is a natural phenomenon. In some ancient and modern cultures, solar eclipses were attributed to supernatural causes or regarded as bad omens. Astronomers' predictions of eclipses began in China as early as the 4th century BC; eclipses hundreds of years into the future may now be predicted with high accuracy.   The Sun's distance from Earth is about 400 times the Moon's distance, and the Sun's diameter is about 400 times the Moon's diameter. Because these ratios are approximately the same, the Sun and the Moon as seen from Earth appear to be approximately the same size: about 0.5 degree of arc in angular measure. Types The Moon's orbit around Earth is slightly elliptical, as is Earth's orbit around the Sun. The apparent sizes of the Sun and Moon therefore vary. The magnitude of an eclipse is the ratio of the apparent size of the Moon to the apparent size of the Sun during an eclipse. An eclipse that occurs when the Moon is near its closest distance to Earth (i.e., near its perigee) can be a total eclipse because the Moon will appear to be large enough to completely cover the Sun's bright disk or photosphere; a total eclipse has a magnitude greater than or equal to 1.000. Conversely, an eclipse that occurs when the Moon is near its farthest distance from Earth (i.e., near its apogee) can be only an annular eclipse because the Moon will appear to be slightly smaller than the Sun; the magnitude of an annular eclipse is less than 1. Because Earth's orbit around the Sun is also elliptical, Earth's distance from the Sun similarly varies throughout the year. This affects the apparent size of the Sun in the same way, but not as much as does the Moon's varying distance from Earth. When Earth approaches its farthest distance from the Sun in early July, a total eclipse is somewhat more likely, whereas conditions favor an annular eclipse when Earth approaches its closest distance to the Sun in early January.   Total eclipse A total eclipse occurs on average every 18 months when the dark silhouette of the Moon completely obscures the bright light of the Sun, allowing the much fainter solar corona to be visible. During an eclipse, totality occurs only along a narrow track on the surface of Earth.  This narrow track is called the path of totality. Annular eclipse An annular eclipse, like a total eclipse, occurs when the Sun and Moon are exactly in line with Earth. During an annular eclipse, however, the apparent size of the Moon is not large enough to completely block out the Sun. Totality thus does not occur; the Sun instead appears as a very bright ring, or annulus, surrounding the dark disk of the Moon. Annular eclipses occur once every one or two years, not annually. Their name comes from the Latin root word anulus, meaning "ring", rather than annus, for "year". Partial eclipse A partial eclipse occurs about twice a year, when the Sun and Moon are not exactly in line with Earth and the Moon only partially obscures the Sun. This phenomenon can usually be seen from a large part of Earth outside of the track of an annular or total eclipse. However, some eclipses can be seen only as a partial eclipse, because the umbra passes above Earth's polar regions and never intersects Earth's surface. Partial eclipses are virtually unnoticeable in terms of the Sun's brightness, as it takes well over 90% coverage to notice any darkening at all. Even at 99%, it would be no darker than civil twilight. Comparison of minimum and maximum apparent sizes of the Sun and Moon (and planets). An annular eclipse can occur when the Sun has a larger apparent size than the Moon, whereas a total eclipse can occur when the Moon has a larger apparent size.

A reminder of the beauty and brevity of life grows outside my front door. Last spring my wife planted moonflower vines, so named because of their large and round white blooms that resemble a full moon. Each flower opens for one night and then withers in the bright sun the following morning, never to bloom again. But the plant is prolific, and every evening presents a fresh parade of flowers. We love watching it as we come and go each day, wondering what new beauty will greet us when we return. These fragile flowers call to mind a vital truth from Scripture. The apostle Peter, recalling the words of the prophet Isaiah, wrote, “You have been born again, not of perishable seed, but of imperishable, through the living and enduring word of God. For, ‘All people are like grass, and all their glory is like the flowers of the field; the grass withers and the flowers fall’” but God keeps His promises forever! (1 Peter 1:23–25). Like flowers in a garden, our lives on Earth are short when compared with eternity. But God has spoken beauty into our brevity. Through the good news of Jesus, we make a fresh beginning with God and trust His promise of unlimited life in His loving presence. When Earth’s sun and moon are but a memory, we will praise Him still.

A planet that played a big role in measuring the speed of light stands just above the Moon this evening. Brilliant Jupiter is the largest planet in the solar system. And it has a giant family of moons, including four that are about the size of our moon or bigger. The smallest and nearest is Io. It's closer to Jupiter than our moon is to Earth. It orbits Jupiter once every 42 and a half hours. And that's the key to the measurement of lightspeed. In the 1670s, Danish astronomer Olé Roemer was trying to refine the measurements of Io's orbit. Io passes “behind” Jupiter on each orbit, so it vanishes in Jupiter's long shadow. The timing reveals the details of Io's orbit. After a few years of measurements, though, Roemer noticed something odd. When Earth was moving toward Jupiter, Io vanished a few minutes earlier than expected. And when Earth was moving away from Jupiter, it vanished a few minutes later. Roemer decided the change was a result of the changing distance between Earth and Jupiter. When the distance was greater, it took longer for light to make the trip. And that meant the speed of light was limited — something that scientists weren't sure about before. Roemer calculated that speed at about 500 million miles per hour. That's about 25 percent off modern calculations. Still, it was the first reasonable estimate of the speed of light — made with the help of Jupiter and one of its many moons. Script by Damond Benningfield   Support McDonald Observatory

When Earth was born, the Sun was fainter than it is today — by about 30 percent. That should have made the young Earth a snowball. But evidence shows that Earth had liquid water on its surface not long after it was formed. That leaves scientists wondering where the extra heat came from. Some of it might have been provided by the Moon. It was born shortly after Earth itself. A planet as big as Mars slammed into Earth, blasting debris into space. Some of that material quickly coalesced to form one or more moons. Today, only one remains. The newborn Moon was quite close to Earth — less than one-tenth of its current distance. At that range, its gravitational pull on Earth was much stronger than it is today. That created powerful tides in whatever water stood on the surface — and in the solid planet. A recent study says those tides would have stretched and compressed rock at and below the surface. That would have generated heat, melting the rocks. That could have boosted the birth of volcanoes, which spewed carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases into the atmosphere. Combined, that would have warmed the surface by several degrees — accounting for at least some of the heat needed to take up the slack of the weaker Sun. The Moon is full tonight. It's the Egg Moon or Grass Moon. And it has a bright companion: Spica, the leading light of Virgo. It rises below the Moon in early evening, and the Moon slides closer to it throughout the night.  Script by Damond Benningfield Support McDonald Observatory

Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: Don't die with dignity; instead play to your outs, published by landfish on April 6, 2022 on LessWrong. In MIRI announces new "Death With Dignity" strategy, Eliezer makes a number of claims. As I understood them, they are: Humanity is very likely doomed, because AI alignment is extremely hard, and no one has a strategy that could plausibly work (or is on track to find one) The right thing to do is maximize the log odds of humanity's survival The way to do this to adopt a mindset Eliezer calls “dying with dignity” Assuming 1) and 2) are true, I'm not convinced the right mindset to adopt is “dying with dignity”. I don't like it as a framing of the problem. Personally, it sounds demotivating and depressing, and not the thing that will help me maximize the log odds of success. I recognize that not everyone has the same mental setup as me, and some people might find the dying with dignity framing helpful. If it works for you, great, but I think there is a better problem framing that will work for a wider variety of mental setups, and I call it playing to your outs. This problem framing arose out of a discussion about the dying with dignity post with Eli Rose and Seraphina Nix. Eli pointed out that in Magic the Gathering, there is a useful strategy to adopt when you're likely to lose, called playing to your outs. Basically, there are times when you're losing and it's tempting to try to minimize your losses and make what gains you can. But if you're sufficiently behind, this will almost always fail. Instead you need to think ahead to what cards you can draw, or what cards your opponent might fail to draw, that will afford you a chance to win. Then plan for one of those scenarios happening, even if it's quite unlikely. If 1) is true, then we are losing badly in our game of AI existential risk. It's hard to stay motivated when things are dire, and I claim our stance should be like that of a good Magic player. Playing carefully, choosing strategies that have a shot at winning, keeping our eye on the prize. Being ready to win if the opportunity presents itself. I don't think this is a different strategy than the one Eliezer is proposing; I think the strategy is identical. But I think there's an important mindset difference, even if it's just in the name, and that mindset difference matters.I am not saying to condition upon some particular unlikely clever scheme working. The actual world is not a Magic game; it's much more complex. So you can't just wait for a particular card to come up in your deck. Playing to your outs might mean spending most of your time looking for outs, e.g. searching for alignment strategies that might work, trying to find extremely talented individuals who can do good research, or searching for AI governance strategies that might give us more time and reduce arms race dynamics. You have to identify a real potential out before you can play to it. I think Eliezer proposes the dying with dignity framing in order to 1) stay motivated while 2) mitigating common epistemological errors when facing extremely bad odds. He writes: When Earth's prospects are that far underwater in the basement of the logistic success curve, it may be hard to feel motivated about continuing to fight, since doubling our chances of survival will only take them from 0% to 0%. That's why I would suggest reframing the problem - especially on an emotional level - to helping humanity die with dignity, or rather, since even this goal is realistically unattainable at this point, die with slightly more dignity than would otherwise be counterfactually obtained. Obviously this is somewhat tongue in cheek, and possibly overstated for April 1st, but if it's overstated I think it's only slightly overstated given what else Eliezer has said about probability of doom. However, I think he's serious in ...

Since survival is unattainable, we should shift the focus of our efforts to helping humanity die with with slightly more dignity. Well, let's be frank here. MIRI didn't solve AGI alignment and at least knows that it didn't. Paul Christiano's incredibly complicated schemes have no chance of working in real life before DeepMind destroys the world. Chris Olah's transparency work, at current rates of progress, will at best let somebody at DeepMind give a highly speculative warning about how the current set of enormous inscrutable tensors, inside a system that was recompiled three weeks ago and has now been training by gradient descent for 20 days, might possibly be planning to start trying to deceive its operators. Management will then ask what they're supposed to do about that. Whoever detected the warning sign will say that there isn't anything known they can do about that. Just because you can see the system might be planning to kill you, doesn't mean that there's any known way to build a system that won't do that. Management will then decide not to shut down the project - because it's not certain that the intention was really there or that the AGI will really follow through, because other AGI projects are hard on their heels, because if all those gloomy prophecies are true then there's nothing anybody can do about it anyways. Pretty soon that troublesome error signal will vanish. When Earth's prospects are that far underwater in the basement of the logistic success curve, it may be hard to feel motivated about continuing to fight, since doubling our chances of survival will only take them from 0% to 0%. That's why I would suggest reframing the problem - especially on an emotional level - to helping humanity die with dignity, or rather, since even this goal is realistically unattainable at this point, die with slightly more dignity than would otherwise be counterfactually obtained. Consider the world if Chris Olah had never existed. It's then much more likely that nobody will even try and fail to adapt Olah's methodologies to try and read complicated facts about internal intentions and future plans, out of whatever enormous inscrutable tensors are being integrated a million times per second, inside of whatever recently designed system finished training 48 hours ago, in a vast GPU farm that's already helpfully connected to the Internet. It is more dignified for humanity - a better look on our tombstone - if we die after the management of the AGI project was heroically warned of the dangers but came up with totally reasonable reasons to go ahead anyways. Or, failing that, if people made a heroic effort to do something that could maybe possibly have worked to generate a warning like that but couldn't actually in real life because the latest tensors were in a slightly different format and there was no time to readapt the methodology. Compared to the much less dignified-looking situation if there's no warning and nobody even tried to figure out how to generate one. Or take MIRI. Are we sad that it looks like this Earth is going to fail? Yes. Are we sad that we tried to do anything about that? No, because it would be so much sadder, when it all ended, to face our ends wondering if maybe solving alignment would have just been as easy as buckling down and making a serious effort on it - not knowing if that would've just worked, if we'd only tried, because nobody had ever even tried at all. It wasn't subjectively overdetermined that the (real) problems would be too hard for us, before we made the only attempt at solvi...

A giant comet may have broken up about 20,000 years ago. And we see the effects of that break-up today. The main remnant of the object appears to be Comet Encke. It's about three miles wide, and orbits the Sun once every 3.3 years. It's the source of several meteor showers. It sheds grains of rock and dirt as it orbits the Sun. They spread out to form wide clouds. When Earth flies through such a cloud, it spawns a meteor shower. The best known is the Taurids, in November. Astronomers have supposed that Encke was the remnant of a larger body for decades. But a study last year found that it has a lot of company. Researchers found 88 small comets and asteroids that appear to be related. When they traced the orbits of these bodies back in time, they found that all of them appear to meet up about 20,000 years ago. The original body could have been up to 75 miles wide. It probably was a cosmic “rubble pile” — big chunks of rock held together by ice. That made it easier to pull apart. As it split up, it sent Encke and many other bodies off on their own. One of those bodies might have been the asteroid that exploded above Tunguska, Russia, in 1908. It was only a couple of hundred feet wide, but it leveled several square miles of forest. And it's possible that more bodies like that could lurk in the debris — cosmic missiles that could someday hit Earth. We'll talk about the remnants of another large body tomorrow.  Script by Damond Benningfield Support McDonald Observatory

Earth is huddling close to the Sun for the next couple of days — it's closest for the whole year, in fact. It's at a point in its orbit called perihelion, and it happens every January. There are a couple of ways to measure the separation between Earth and the Sun. There's the way astronomers measure it, which is from the center of Earth to the center of the Sun — 91.4 million miles at perihelion. Or you can measure it from the surfaces of the two bodies, which puts the Sun almost half a million miles closer. The distance between Earth and the Sun changes because Earth's orbit is an ellipse — like a slightly flattened circle. Over the course of an orbit, the distance varies by about three million miles. When the Sun is closest, as it is now, we receive about seven percent more total solar energy than when it's farthest, in early July. But that has nothing to do with the seasons. They're controlled by Earth's tilt on its axis. Right now, the north pole is tilted away from the Sun, so it's winter in the northern hemisphere, and summer in the southern hemisphere. The changing distance does have one important impact on the seasons. When Earth is close to the Sun, it moves faster in its orbit than when it's farther away. So that makes the length of the seasons uneven. Here in the northern hemisphere, winter is only about 89 days long, compared to 93 days of summer — extra sunlight thanks to our lopsided path around the Sun.  Script by Damond Benningfield Support McDonald Observatory

A quiet but steady meteor shower is building toward its peak tomorrow night. The gibbous Moon will steal most of its luster, though. Only a few “shooting stars” will shine through the moonlight. The shower is called the Leonids because its meteors appear to “rain” into the sky from Leo. The lion climbs into view in the wee hours of the morning. But there's no relation between the meteors and the constellation. Instead, the meteors are the offspring of a comet. The comet was first seen by Ernst Tempel, in December 1865, and Horace Tuttle a few weeks later, so it carries both of their names — Tempel-Tuttle. Not long after the discovery, several astronomers noted a similarity between the orbit of Tempel-Tuttle and the Leonid meteor shower. They realized that the comet must somehow spawn the shower. And they were right. A comet is a ball of frozen water and gases mixed with bits of solid rock. When it gets close to the Sun, some of the ice vaporizes, releasing solid particles. When Earth crosses the comet's path, these particles slam into the atmosphere, forming the glowing streaks known as meteors. The Leonids are best when the comet is closest to the Sun, and when Earth passes through a dense part of the stream of comet dust. Neither of those will happen this year, so the shower is pretty weak. Even so, if you have a dark, safe viewing spot, it's worth looking for those few meteors — the offspring of a comet.  Script by Damond Benningfield   Support McDonald Observatory

When the Sun rises, the rest of the universe vanishes. Scattered sunlight turns the sky blue, erasing the stars and planets from view. The curtain of blue also hides meteors — the streaks of light formed by bits of space rock burning up as they plunge into the atmosphere. Just as many meteors flash through the daytime sky as the nighttime, including several meteor showers. And one of the most intense should be at its peak tomorrow. The Daytime Sextantids are spawned by an asteroid. It may have split from the parent body of December’s nighttime Geminid shower, which is one of the year’s best. When Earth crosses the asteroid’s path at this time of year, though, the dayside of our planet is facing into the cloud of debris, so the meteors are washed out. Astronomers track the meteors with radar. The meteors leave trails in the upper atmosphere that reflect radio waves. Astronomers use observations of those reflections to trace the paths of the meteors, and track down their parent asteroids. There are two ways for the rest of us to observe the shower. You can look for the meteors in the hour or so before dawn, low in the eastern sky. Or you can “listen” for them. A meteor’s trail reflects FM radio waves. If you have an FM radio, tune to a weak station at the low end of the band. When a meteor passes by, the signal should become louder and clearer for a few seconds — the sound of a “shooting star.” Script by Damond Benningfield Support McDonald Observatory

Today, we're looking at Star Trek: The Next Generation "The Best of Both Worlds". I share my thoughts and review of this iconic episode which changes the life of Jean-Luc Picard forever. If you enjoyed this episode, you can buy me a hot chocolate.  ----more---- Transcript Welcome to Nerd Heaven.I’m Adam David Collings, The author of Jewel of The Stars. And I…am a nerd. In this podcast, we’re gonna geek out together over works of science fiction and fantasy. TV shows, movies and books.Star Trek Picard is coming out on the 24th of January next year.Today is the first of our looks at the Star Trek episodes and movies that you should watch before Picard. And today’s episode is Best of Both Worlds. The IMDB description for this episode isResponding to a distress call on one of the Federation’s outer-most colonies, the Enterprise arrives…only to find a big hole in the ground where the town used to be and discovers the Borg are behind the attack.Part 1 of this episode first aired on the 18th of June 1990.Part first aired on the 4th of September, 1990. So let’s launch right into the episode. The episode starts out like any other. An away team is beaming down to investigate a distress call. It could be caused by any alien of the week. But as they appear in what should be the centre of town, and see before them, a massive hole in the surface of the planet, we know, this isn’t just any episode. This is something significant. That visual of what’s left is fantastic, and they a great job of integrating the live actors into the scene. The tone and stakes are made clear right after the credits, when Admiral Hanson says, “Hell, we are not ready. We’ve known they were coming for over a year. We’ve thrown every resource we have into this, but still…” The second season episode, Q Who, did a great job of establishing just how unbeatable the Borg are. In that story, we encountered them in the delta quadrant. The enterprise survived because Q was able to snap them back home. But now, they’ve come to us. This isn’t the depths of unexplored space. They’re heading for our backyard. So we get the introduction of Commander Shelby. Now, I don’t know how much I’d like her as a person if I really knew her, but I can say I definitely like her as a character. She brings a whole lot of interesting conflict into the show and forces Riker to take a close look at himself. It’s tempting to think of Best of Both Worlds as a Picard story because it has such a major life-changing effect on him, and that’s true. That’s why I chose this as an episode to watch in the lead-up to Picard’s new show. But in a truer sense, this is a Riker episode. Riker is the protagonist. Of Best of Both Worlds. Shelby is a good officer. The traits that make her so frustrating, that make her clash with Riker so much, are also the traits that were needed to cut through all the drama and make some progress, trying to develop a defence against the Borg. This is the third time Riker has turned down an offer to captain his own ship. I can understand that. After all, this is the Enterprise.Plus, there’s something comforting about a stable job. Staying where you’re comfortable. In the 20 years since I left university, I’ve only had 3 jobs. Of course, nobody has been offering me the captain’s chair of a starship! Shelby does make some genuine mistakes. Her first is beaming down ahead of schedule without permission. I wonder if part of that is the great latitude that Admiral Hanson has been giving her. She is clearly surprised that Riker is so upset by her actions. She thought he’d be cool with it. I love this episode for the character stuff with Riker and Shelby just as much as I do for all the Borg stuff. I like exciting sci-fi action plots with big stakes, and I like powerfully emotional character-driven stories. But my favourite types of episodes are those that combine both. That’s one of the things I loved so much about Babylon 5. I love how the dread slowly building through this episode.First of all, there’s the mystery. We think it’s the Borg. Then the confirmation. Then our first encounter with them. Each step raises the tension and clarifies the stakes. Picard doesn’t want to lose Riker. He’s a fine first officer. But as a friend, he wants what is best for Riker.Interestingly, this kind of reflected Michael Piller’s own journey. He was considering leaving the show. He wrote episode 1 without knowing what would happen in episode 2, or if he would even be there to write it. It was Gene Roddenberry who convinced him to stay. Sometimes when a writer draws from their own life experiences like this, they can create something that rings especially true. I know I’ve found that with my own writing. Riker and Shelby argue about whether to keep working on their defences or get some rest. I’m never quite sure whose side I’m on. Because they’re both right. As Shelby says, the borg are coming. They HAVE to get a workable defence. At times like this, maybe sleep isn’t the highest priority. The clock is ticking and every second counts. But Riker is also right. They can’t function on no sleep. I know for me, if I’m stuck on a problem in my work as a programmer, pushing on into the night is completely pointless. But if I call it a night and try again in the morning, the answer often presents itself surprisingly quickly. It’s uncanny. That actually happened to me last night. I’d been working on a problem all day, and I just couldn’t find a solution. This morning, I thought ‘hmm. I’ll just try this’. And that lead me to the solution. It happens. The music in this episode is great. A lot of the music in the early seasons of TNG sound very dated to me, but this episode is the first one that I remember having a truly epic musical score Also, the show looks absolutely beautiful in high definition.I know all the episodes look good in their remastered form, but I was especially noticing it here. Not sure why. Shelby’s second big mistake, of course, was going to Picard behind Riker’s back with her plan, bypassing the chain of command.I get her perspective. She has a plan she really believes in. Riker might be playing it too safe. She doesn’t want to plan dismissed because he thinks it’s too risky. As she says, “I’d like the captain to make that determination.”But Riker clearly said he takes all alternatives to the captain. She didn’t need to go behind his back. And then we get the scene where they have it out in the turbo lift. It’s awesome stuff. In an era where writers were virtually banned from having conflict between the characters, this story really broke free and let loose. Sure, it’s tame by today’s standards, but at the time, and under the rules the show was being run with, it was huge. The episode slows down a little here, as the enterprise hides from the borg in the nebula. That isn’t a bad thing. It gives us space to really live in the tension and acknowledge just how much worse this situation is than anything our heroes have ever faced before. Picard has a great conversation with Guinan. I love Guinan, and I’ve always enjoyed her relationship with Picard.I wonder if we’ll see her return in Picard. They’d probably have to use some de-ageing technology, since the character doesn’t age, like the human actor who portrays her. So the borg kidnap Picard and then set a course for Earth.Could things possibly get any worse. The interior of the Borg ship looks great. They took the design from Q Who, which was already good, but made the ship look bigger and creepier. The struggle to adjust to being captain begin immediately for Riker, as he has to be corrected by Troi in front of the entire bridge when he insists on leading the away team himself. And so Picard is assimilated. This is the very first assimilation we’d ever seen. In fact, the first suggestion of the idea of assimilation. How chilling that must have been for the characters.Being killed by your enemy is one thing, but for them to make you one of them? That’s the fear that drives our current fascination with zombies. And now we come to that epic incredible cliffhanger. Where Picard appears on the viewscreen as Locutus, speaking for the Borg. And Riker orders Worf to fire. And this is where my experience differs from most. You see, I didn’t see this episode on TV. Around the time this episode was airing in Australia (which would have been a year after America) there was weird stuff going on with the TV stations in my state, Tasmania. Essentially, the TV station in the south of the state had the rights to show Star Trek, and the station in the north of the state, where I am, didn’t.So we actually missed a few seasons of the show.I actually saw Best of Both worlds on VHS. I was at our local video rental place. It was called Wills and was later bought by Blockbuster when they moved into Australia. I saw they had an episode of Star Trek The Next Generation. I was missing the show so gladly hired it. It was both episodes together, edited together into a movie. And I was blown away by the epic nature of it. This wasn’t just any Star Trek episode. This was so much more intense. So much more exciting. So I never had that horrible wait they everyone describes as they waited to see if Picard would die. To find out if Earth would be enslaved by the Borg.I just watched it all back to back. So, the plan doesn’t work. Picard knew about it, so now the borg know about it. Picard’s assimilation actually gave the writers the perfect way to resolve the cliffhanger, which they hadn’t planned ahead of time. Hanson essentially declares Picard dead. It seems callous and premature, but I understand his reasoning. They have to take out that borg ship. They can’t keep thinking of Locutus as Picard. Riker already understands this. He gave the command to fire, after all. The shot of the tear falling from Picard’s eye as they complete the assimilation process speaks volumes. Even though he doesn’t appear in the episode, it’s nice to hear mention of Barclay’s name. I like little touches like that. I’ve never noticed it before. Riker and Shelby managed to sort out a lot of the conflict between them. And then the battle of Wolf 359 takes place off-screen. That makes sense, both for budgetary reasons, and also because this story follows our heroes on the enterprise. It might have been nice to see some of the battle, but this way, we got to see it in deep space nine’s pilot – Emissary.Part of me actually wants to see an extended cut of best of both worlds that incorporates some of the footage from Emissary. I wonder how seamlessly it could be edited in. We get another Guinan conversation. This time she has some wisdom for Riker. I notice that since Riker received his promotion to Captain by Admiral Hanson, he’s the fourth pip on his collar. That symbolically shows that they really don’t expect to get Picard back. They also don’t think there’s any way to get out of this situation alive. His first job as captain is to save Earth from an unstoppable enemy.Pretty tough gig for his first day as captain. The shot we get of the Enterprise flying through the wreckage of all the ships destroyed at Wolf 359 is powerful and is probably more effective than showing the battle would have been, anyway. Riker manages to distract the Borg long enough to rescue Picard. Amusingly, the borg aren’t really bothered by this. Locutus can continue to speak for them from the Enterprise as easily as he could from the cube. This is more than just wanting to save their friend. There are tactical reasons to try to access the knowledge that Locutus has of the Borg. Earth sends three fighters to intercept the cube, which dispatches them immediately. This is, to my knowledge, the only time we have ever seen Starfleet using fighters, until the Discovery season 2 finale. It’s not clear to me how exactly Picard was able to reach out to Data, and it’s never really explained. My best guess is that it was something to do with Data’s attempts to hack into the collective. Maybe he weakened some firewalls or something. The idea of implant a command into the collective through Picard is pretty cool. And the choice of ‘sleep’ as a command to tell all the drones to regenerate was very clever. I wonder if Riker’s plan to destroy the cube by colliding the enterprise with it would have worked. Given the destructive nature of a warp core breach, I suspect so.As Scotty said in The Motion Picture, when that much matter and anti-matter comes together, oh yes, we will indeed. What a relief we all felt, what triumph, as explosions began to break out along the hull of the borg cube. In typical TNG fashion, things go back to normal at the end. Shelby is off to rebuild the fleet. Picard has his job back, and Riker is likely to remain on the enterprise. But if it hadn’t happened this way. After watching this episode, I went outside and started to make-believe another option. I imagined an entire season with Riker in command as captain of the enterprise, only to finally bring back Picard at the end of that season. I guess even as a kid, I like the idea of actually making bold changes on a tv show, rather than always putting the reset button. Except….not everything is back to normal for Picard. As we linger on his face at the end of the episode, it is clear that he has been changed. His life has been impacted in a very significant way.He will never be the same again. And credit to the writers, in an age where continuity was rare, they continued to run with that. I expect that his assimilation by the borg will continue to haunt Picard as he embarks on his new adventure next year. Best of Both Worlds showed us Star Trek The Next Generation on a scale we’d never seen before. It was epic, exciting and deeply emotional. There’s a reason many people consider this one of the best. It’s been fun revisiting this with you. Thanks for geeking out with me. In that tale, the town wasn't run by criminals, but by a particularly controlling sect of nuns. Kuberts Barbershop sign: One of the storefronts in Salvation features a pretty familiar name to DC Comics fans: Kubert. In this instance, it's likely a nod to Joe Kubert, whose work on Jonah Hex comics helped to craft the look of the character's early years. Kubert, of course, also worked on a lot of classic Hawkman stories, meaning that his influence has been felt quite a bit on Legends. Jonah Hex: While Hex's origin is that of a post-Civil War bounty hunter, he's had some time-travel adventures himself. In the DC Comics Universe, when he found himself flung to the far future after the events of Crisis on Infinite Earths. G. Wells: The child Stein saves in the episode is actually a young H.G. Wells, whose The Time Machine is widely regarded as one of the earliest and best novels on the topic of time-travel. ---- But we all know Warehouse 13 told the TRUE story of H.G. Well. (Shannon, that's for you!) John Wayne reference: Ray comes up with another great alias... Turnbull: Turnbull, the man who's responsible for the sacking of Calvert, Oklahoma, is a Jonah Hex villain from the comics.  He was also the villain in the Jonah Hex movie played by John Malkovich. Hannibal Hawkes: Hannibal Hawkes isn't just the Old West hero Nighthawk, but in modern stories it was revealed that he was, indeed, one of the many lives of Prince Khufu/Hawkman. Klemmer & Sons sign: One of Salvation's storefronts is that of "Klemmer and Sons," apparently the business owned by Phil Klemmer's family.  Klemmer is a writer and producer on Legends of Tomorrow. Geddes Drugstore sign: One of the signs in town is for an apothecary named D. Geddes,  a nod to David Geddes, who directed last week's episode titled "Progeny.   ARROW NEWS:   Stephen Amell teases 4-way crossover with “Boots on the Ground”  (Date: 07 Aug 2016) * Stephen Amell tweeted a pic of a bunch of boots - can you figure out who is who? * https://pbs.twimg.com/media/CpSSSeCUAAAhFbq.jpg Link:http://comicbook.com/2016/08/07/stephen-amell-teases-boots-on-the-ground-for-dc-tv-universe-cros/ CW Releases Season Synopses for DC-TV Shows  (Date: 10 Aug 2016) The CW has released the official synopsis for Arrow, Flash, LoT and Supergirl: Arrow:http://www.comicbookresources.com/article/arrow-season-5-synopsis-teases-a-deadly-new-adversary-new-hero - October 5th Flash:http://www.comicbookresources.com/article/the-flash-season-3-description-retraces-barrys-path-to-flashpoint - October 4th LoT:http://www.comicbookresources.com/article/legends-of-tomorrow-s2-plot-synopsis-teases-jsa-vixen-citizen-steel-more-2016 - October 13th Supergirl:http://www.comicbookresources.com/article/supergirl-s2-synopsis-hypes-superman-team-up-search-for-cadmus-more  - October 10th Dolph Lundgren to guest on Arrow Season 5  (Date: 11 Aug 2016) * best known for roles in Rocky IV, Universal Soldier, The Punisher, He-Man and The Expendables, will play the head of the Bratva (Russian mob) in the flashback * IMDB: http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0000185/?ref_=nv_sr_1 Link: http://comicbook.com/2016/08/11/dolph-lundgren-to-appear-on-arrow-season-5/   GENERAL DC TV NEWS   The Flash: Susan Walters (Vampire Diaries) cast as Caitlin's Mom (Date: 08 Aug 2016) * Susan Walters moves from one CW show (The Vampire Diaries) to another (The Flash). * Dr. Carla Tannhauser is a biomedical engineer, similar to Caitlin (biochemist & M.D.). * Snow and her mother share a knack for science, but not much else.
