HILMAA WORLD PREMIERE PRODUCED IN PARTNERSHIP WITH NEW GEORGESWORDS BY KATE SCELSAMUSIC BY ROBERT M. JOHANSONDIRECTED BY MORGAN GREENJune 4–23, 2024The early 20th century queer mystic and artist Hilma af Klint channeled hundreds of paintings through messages from otherworldly forces, hoping to communicate the mysteries of the universe. Only recently rediscovered and hailed as one of the first-ever abstract artists, she worked in obscurity during a time that was not yet ready to receive her message. This contemporary opera – with a score that mixes genres including opera, rock, pop, and musical theater– wrestles with the hubris and humility that fueled one woman's spiritual quest.Kate Scelsa – BOOKS: “Fans of the Impossible Life” (HarperCollins, 2015 Indie Next and Junior Library Guild pick), “Improbable Magic for Cynical Witches”(HarperCollins), “Luminary” (Simon&Schuster), “The Mortal Year” (forthcoming from Abrons). THEATER: “Everyone's Fine With Virginia Woolf” (published by Dramatists Play Service, produced by Elevator Repair Service), New Georges 2017 Audrey Resident, Virginia B. Toulmin Foundation grant recipient for playwriting, performing member of Elevator Repair Service Theater since 2002 (“Gatz,” “The Sound and the Fury,” “The Select”). Folger Shakespeare Library: Shakespeare Unlimited

Hamlet has been adapted, retold, and reinvented countless ways. But you've never seen a version of Hamlet quite like James Ijames's Fat Ham, which won the 2022 Pulitzer Prize for Drama and is now playing on Broadway. In Fat Ham, Ijames takes the outline of Hamlet and transposes it to the present day American South. Instead of “funeral baked meats,” Fat Ham serves up barbecue—expertly cooked by Rev, the Claudius character. The queer, Black Hamlet character is named Juicy. He isn't on break from Wittenberg; he's taking an online degree in human resources. After being visited by his father's ghost, Juicy believes that his uncle murdered his father in order to marry his mother. And, just like Hamlet, Juicy has to decide what to do about it. But the way Ijames transforms Shakespeare's premise makes Fat Ham into much more than a parody or an adaptation. James Ijames is interviewed by Barbara Bogaev. James Ijames is the co-artistic director of the Wilma Theater in Philadelphia and the author of the acclaimed plays Kill Move Paradise, TJ Loves Sally 4Ever, and The Most Spectacularly Lamentable Trial of Miz Martha Washington. Produced by ContemporaryPerformance.com and the Sarah Lawrence College MFA Theatre Program, the SLC Performance lab interviews visiting artists to the MFA Theatre Program's Grad Lab, one of the core classes of the program where grads work with guest artists and develop group generated performance pieces monthly. Jennifer Kidwell’s (b. 1978) poignant, performer-driven theater work addresses the complexities of race and notions of American history with sharp intelligence and wry humor. Invested in probing challenging social and historical truths, Kidwell says her work is “concerned with discomfort and/or confusion around normative practices and systems.” With Scott Sheppard, she premiered and performed in Underground Railroad Game, lauded by The Philadelphia Inquirer as a “brilliant theatrical commentary on contemporary race relations.” A graduate of Pig Iron Theatre Company’s School for Advanced Performance Training, Kidwell created and appeared in the company’s Center-funded project, I Promised Myself to Live Faster, and The Wilma Theater’s production of Antigone. For the 2014 Whitney Biennial, she performed in Joe Scanlan’s provocative piece Dick’s Last Stand as the artist Donelle Woolford. She is co-artistic director of the theater company Lightning Rod Special and co-founder of the Brooklyn-based performance space JACK. She holds a BA in English and comparative literature from Columbia University. Edited and Produced by Kyrie Ellison (SLC21)

A conversation with Orbiter 3 member Sam Henderson, covering Henderson's latest play, "The Brownings," as well as his history working in theater throughout the city. "The Brownings" is an immoderate re-telling of the great love of the 19th century, an unconventional, rudely comic exploration of the purpose of art and the nature of love. The show runs here at FringeArts from Dec 1 - Dec 9. Henderson has appeared at the Arden Theatre Company, Lantern Theater Company, Theatre Exile, and the Wilma Theater, among others. Recent productions include "100" (2015 FringeArts Festival) and the Renegade Company's "Damned Dirty Apes!" Readings include "The Brownings" (PTC@Play Festival) and "HEART" (Theatre Exile's Studio X-Hibition Series). A recent finalist for the Smith Prize for Political Theatre, Henderson is a member of InterAct Theatre's Core Writer's Program, and the Foundry, a lab for emerging playwrights.
